PART OF THE UBC MALCOLM KNAPP RESEARCH FOREST

Originally built in 1949 to house the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Forestry field camps, Loon Lake Lodge & Retreat Centre has a long tradition of providing environmental education and outdoor recreation.

While still hosting the Faculty of Forestry field schools throughout the year, Loon Lake now offers many other groups the opportunity to take advantage of its idyllic setting for their own outdoor education needs. Offering year-round meeting, conference and retreat facilities, Loon Lake is the perfect location for any adult or youth group looking to host an event.

Loon Lake, a large 56 hectare (140 acre) private lake, is an exceptionally special place in the Lower Mainland. Fishing and motorized activities are banned here in order to keep the lake a pristine and natural paradise. Loon Lake is 300 metres wide, approximately 1.6 kilometers long, and is fed by a number of small streams that drain down throughout its watershed.

FACILITIES

At full capacity, Loon Lake Lodge & Retreat Centre can accommodate up to 177 individuals. Facilities range from corporate-ready Whistler-style accommodations, to well-maintained dormitories that are ideal for students, large families, or those working within a budget.

SHARED ACTIVITY SPACES

FIRE PITS

Loon Lake has two rustic campfire locations. One is located at the Lakeside Theatre, and the other is located near the Student Centre by the lake. Enjoy your time at night, sitting by the fire, making s’mores, and telling great stories.

Please Note: firewood is provided and groups are expected to obey fire rules and restrictions at all times.

PELTON PLAYING FIELD

Capture the flag, team-building activities, soccer, and more! The playing field is perfect for many types of outdoor activities. The field cannot be reserved and is granted on a first-come, firstserved basis. Groups should bring their own sports equipment. Wheelchair-accessible male and female washrooms with showers are located at the playing field.

ROPE FERRY

Hop on the pull ferry to make your way across Loon Lake, and go for a hike once you get to the other side! The ferry can hold up to 10 people, and you will need at least a few hands to help pull you across!

TIMBER CRUISER CIRCUIT

Loon Lake is excited to offer our new outdoor natural fitness playground that stretches along a 2.5 km forest trail. Stop along one of our six stations and test your climbing, balancing, and pulling skills. Feeling tired? Feel free to walk along the trail and learn about the local ecology.

AMPHITHEATRES

Overlooking the beautiful lake, our amphitheaters have plenty of outdoor seating. The Koerner Theatre is equipped with a gas fire place and is reserved for guests staying at the Koerner Lodge. The Lakeside Theatre has a wood-burning fire pit and is a shared activity space. These spaces are perfect for meetings, story telling, and show productions.

DOCKS

Evoke old memories from your childhood or create new ones while enjoying the docks at Loon Lake. Be sure to keep your eye out for our friendly Loons that can be commonly spotted diving in the middle of the lake.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

HIKING

Loon Lake offers two main hiking trails. Both trails are surrounded by the lush and green environment of our Coastal Temperate rainforest, and meander around the lake.

For those looking for a longer hike, the Loon Lake trail is great for a 2-2.5 hour trip. For those looking for a short, 30-minute walk, the Discovery Trail is perfect and well groomed. The Discovery Trail is also home to the Mindfulness Path, offering unique signage that invites guests to participate in a self-reflective journey.

CANOE & PADDLE BOARDS

What better way to experience the lake than canoeing along the water’s edge or paddling to a hidden spot? Loon Lake has canoes available for a rental fee. Life jackets, paddles, and other safety equipment are also available. Please see page 37 for more information on rates.
