Registration and Cancellation Registration for programs and/or services is important as we strive to provide quality programming. Registration helps us determine the number of participants to prepare for. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis and, at times programs fill up, so register early.

PSP programs: Full refunds will be processed by contacting PSP at 250-363-1009 a minimum of 7 days prior to the program start date (camps require two weeks notice prior to the first day of camp). Please note cancellations after the required dates will be subject to approval and subject to an administrative fee.

Programs/Events that have a fee attached to them require payment at the time of registration. Payment can be made by cash, debit or credit card (during normal business hours).

In the event of a medical/emergency circumstance prorated refunds may be granted for programs with multiple sessions (ie; workshop series).

Cancellation Policy

Refund Process

If we cancel Full refunds are issued when the MFRC/PSP cancels a program. Every effort is made to cancel courses in a timely manner (3-7 days prior to start date).

MFRC programs: If paid by credit card, the money is refunded back to your card. If paid by debit card at the Signal Hill location, the amount can be refunded back to your debit card. If paid by cash or debit card at the CPAC location, a cheque will be issued. Please allow two weeks for processing.

If you cancel MFRC programs: Full refunds will be processed by contacting the MFRC at 250-363-2640 a minimum of 3 days prior to the program start date.

PSP programs: Credit and Debit Payments are credited to the payment method, other refunds are made by cheque and a minimum two weeks processing time frame.

Personnel Support Programs (PSP)

Albert Head Confidence Course The Albert Head Confidence Course is available for training by DND units and groups. Confidence Course training serves several purposes such as: exposure to challenges service personnel may encounter under operational conditions; improve cardio-respiratory efficiency; muscular strength and endurance; as well as develop speed, agility, self confidence, will-power, determination, initiative and team work, all of which are important morale building qualities. Requesting units must have a qualified supervisor attend an orientation in order to request access to and conduct training on the Confidence Course. Orientations are conducted by PSP fitness staff covering course protocol, procedures, and obstacle demonstrations focusing on technique and safety. Orientations are held in the Fall and Spring each year, or as required. Requirements for supervisors include a minimum rank of MS/MCpl and nomination by the Unit Training Officer/NCO. User groups must request an orientation by contacting PSP Fitness Coordinator Matt Carlson @ 250-363-4495.

2610 Rosebank Road, Colwood (off Ocean Blvd) CPAC is a community driven multipurpose facility designed to accommodate our military and civilian communities.

Our centralized location allows us to offer a large range of rental opportunities including structured birthday parties, large conferences to meeting room rentals.

Facilities Naden Athletic Centre (NAC) Building 88, Naden The Naden Athletic Centre has numerous facilities and programs for military personnel, their families and DND employees.

Sports Equipment Military personnel may sign out equipment for most sports from the sports store, please call 250-363-4072.

To rent pool space Monday to Friday 6am-6pm, call Facilities Coordinator at 250-363-4213 Monday to Friday 6-9pm and Saturday and Sunday, call Recreation at 250-363-2648.

Activity Guide Mailing List Be the first to know about upcoming MFRC and PSP workshops, events and services. The MFRC mails out close to 800 Activity Guides to military families each December, April and August. The Family Navigator Coordinator at the Esquimalt MFRC offers one-to-one support for Canadian Armed Forces families with a family member with extra needs. This person can: • develop a support plan for persons with complex needs • work together with someone to create a plan for upcoming deployments • provide support for people who are caring for an elderly family member • help families prepare when they are posting in or out of Greater Victoria • help families navigate the education or health care system and local resources during a relocation or new diagnosis • advocate for services for a family Need assistance? Emergency Services The MFRC Emergency Services Program offers support and resources to individuals and families during emergencies related to child care, pregnancy, and any other urgent family situation. Call the MFRC at 250-363-2640 (toll free: 1-800-353-3329) if you have an emergency.

Employment and Education Support For employment and education support, the MFRC refers families to employment agencies in the greater community. The MFRC website (www.esquimaltmfrc.com) has links for the local employment agencies and education services. You can also check out www.workbc.ca.

Imagination Library The Imagination Library, funded through donations, is offered as a way to enhance literacy and develop resilience in children as they experience the challenges of the military lifestyle, and to show community support to parents in caring for their children. Families with babies under 12 months of age to serving regular force members and class B/C reservists at CFB Esquimalt are eligible to register. Children will receive one book per month by mail until their fifth birthday. Please contact the MFRC for more information.

Services MFRC 24-Hour Information Line MFRC staff members are ready to take your call - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They can answer your questions, provide assistance in an emergency or do the research to find the information you need. Call 250363-2640 (toll free: 1-800-353-3329).

Military Family ID Card It takes just 15 minutes to get this valuable ID card. The card is available to all regular and reserve military family members age 13 years and up. Use this nationally recognized ID here and at your next posting. Use it to access base services such as the Naden Athletic Centre and to receive discounts from local businesses.

The CAF member must be present to sign the card at the time of issue. If your military spouse/partner is deployed or on course, contact the MFRC to make special arrangements. The MFID is available at Signal Hill MFRC and CPAC MFRC.

Parenting from Afar Stay connected with your child during deployment. Look for activities and tips in Raising Your Military Child on the MFRC website (www.esquimaltmfrc.com). You can also pick up Children’s Deployment Workbooks and a Parent Guide at any MFRC location, and the Parenting from Afar booklet.

Short-term Counselling Individuals, couples and families can access counselling sessions at the MFRC in a confidential atmosphere of support.

Registered social workers and clinical counsellors provide support with stress, relationship issues, parenting challenges, the military lifestyle plus much more. The MFRC also provides quality referrals to outside counselling resources and specialized support services. Call 250-363-2640 for details.

Staying in Touch Program Sign up yourself or a loved one for a “Staying in Touch” phone call or email to take place through a deployment or workrelated separation. You will receive updates on the activities and services available to you through the Base and Community as

Veteran Family Program Transitioning out of the military and into the civilian world can be both an exciting and challenging time for military members and their families. The Veteran Family Program is a four-year pilot project to help with that transition. The pilot extends the MFRC’s mandate to cover medically-releasing Canadian Armed Forces members, medically-released veterans who release after November 30, 2014, and their families for a two-year period after

they release. Canada Company Scholarship Fund expands Rachel Lallouz Staff Writer Canada Company, an organization that provides outreach between Canada’s Armed Forces (CAF) members and the corporate world, announced June 24 an enhancement of their Scholarship Fund at their annual scholarship awards ceremony in Toronto.

The scholarship fund exists to provide financial assistance towards the post-secondary education of eligible children of Canadian soldiers who have been killed while serving in domestic or international operations of the Canadian Armed Forces and Reserves any time since January 1, 2002.

For the purpose of this Scholarship Fund “killed while serving” shall include Canadian soldiers, who while still serving in the military and having served in an active role in a domestic or international operation of the Canadian Armed Forces and Reserves any time since 2002, or took their own lives where the suicides have been determined by a Board of Inquiry to be death by suicide attributable through military service.

Eligible Candidates who enroll or continue their enrolment in full-time postsecondary academic studies may be awarded annual scholarships of up to $4,000 per academic year and may be available for a maximum of 4 years.

“It is important to Canada Company that we support the men and women in uniform, and their families,” says Angela Mondou, President of Canada Company.

Belinda Naismith and her family are one of over a hundred families who have been supported by the fund. Her eldest son, Adam, was one of the first recipients of the Scholarship Fund when it was founded in 2008.

Adam was able to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at the University of Saskatchewan with the scholarship’s aid, as well as a teaching degree, and now works as a substitute teacher. Her two younger daughters, Arina, 22, and Halsey, 19, both received scholarships to study at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

“The scholarship has been a tremendous help, and it is such a significant amount of money,” says Naismith. “The children were able to focus on their studies, and did not need to work or go into debt to pursue their schooling.”

Her husband, Captain Kevin Naismith, once a fighter pilot with Squadron 416 in Cold Lake, Alberta, passed away when he was forced to eject from his fighter plane during a catastrophic flight control failure while training.

“Our family can’t thank Canada Company enough for all of the support,” she says. “They really are wonderful people who wear their hearts on their sleeves, and they do this because it is something that they want to do.”

To date, the Canada Company Scholarship Fund has awarded 105 scholarships since its inception.

Bart Armstrong: Setting the record straight Peter Mallett Staff Writer For the past 16 years, military historian Bart Armstrong has been focused on setting the record straight on Canada’s forgotten military heroes.

Armstrong, 67, a former military reservist, spends his days pouring over historical records, microfilm and Internet sources to dig deep into our nation’s military past in order to right many historical wrongs.

Armstrong says his research has uncovered 109 recipients of the Victoria Cross with connections to Canada as opposed to the previously accepted number of 94, and determined there are 109 Medal of Honor recipients with connections to Canada who served for the United States as opposed to the recorded 69.

He is also big on pointing out that 50,000 Canadians served in the U.S. during the Civil War, something most Canadians are “completely oblivious to.”

“I am just scratching the surface with my work; there is so much out there about Canada’s military history, and, as a prominent genealogist recently claimed, an estimated 95 per cent of that information has yet to be revealed,” he says.

The historical buff doesn’t mince words in about 400 “Sunday Evening” blogs on his website www.canadianmedalofhonor.com. The site is home to a comprehensive digital archive of graves, memorials and medals information, easily searchable, and available for other researchers and historians to access.

“You can type in the name of any soldier, sailor, aviator, ship

or military institution and find out what I have written about,” says Armstrong. “Most of the material is related to The Medal of Honor, the Victoria Cross, and also The Great Escape, one of my other preoccupations.”

His investigative sense comes from years working as a police officer, in the private investigation and security fields, and also as a journalist and advocate.

His love of military comes from his own service in three different regiments of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves, and a long legacy of military service in his family lineage.

Add to his already brimming resume, he served as president of the Victoria Genealogical Society, and is the only Canadian member of the “Medal of Honor Historical Society of the United States”. In humour, they refer to

his home office as the group’s “Canadian satellite office.”

When the errors are corrected and result in high profile events such as the April 29 Noil ceremony in Washington, DC, which brought out top U.S and Canadian military and civilian officials, very few were aware of one of the men and women behind it all.

However, he has received a few prized letters of praise from both U.S. and Canadian statesmen.

“More Canadians need to be aware about the importance of researching Canada’s history themselves,” says Armstrong. “If they did this work they would eventually come to the conclusion our country’s strong, intricate ties to the historical legacy of the United States are something that needs to be celebrated.”

Children’s Deployment Workshops Children’s Deployment Workshops help children adjust to a parent being away on deployment. Workshops offer children an opportunity to interact with other children who are going through the same experience. These workshops will help validate your child’s feelings about deployment.

Deployment Respite Child Care Free Deployment Respite Child Care (for children age 6 months to kindergarten) is available through the MFRC for one continuous 3 hour session per week up to a maximum of 4 free sessions per month when a military parent is deployed (or away for work related reasons) for 21 consecutive days or more. Punch Cards (available at the MFRC) are used to keep track for the period during which each family can access the program. Parents must complete registration forms and follow established guidelines. Deployment Happy Thanksgiving

Relationship Building

Even though your member is deployed, come out and share this special day with your “Deployment Family.” This will be a potluck style event with crafts on hand for the children. This event is sponsored by the Family Networks. All participants must register by October 1 by calling the MFRC. Also email your Network to let them know what you will be bringing.

Note this is an interactive event so there will be no childcare available.

Do you have concerns about what things will be like once your partner has returned from their deployment? You may find that re-establishing intimacy after a long separation can be challenging. This workshop will provide you with information to understand the different forms of intimacy, identify roadblocks that may prevent you from achieving it and provide you with tools that will help you re-establish intimacy.

Stress Busters and the Big 4 Stress is an individual response to a gap between resources and demands. Demands and resources can come from the individual and/or the environment. In order to manage stress we have to take time to reflect on the situation that we are facing and identify what we can control and change in order to reestablish the equilibrium. In this workshop, we’ll look at some stress buster tools you can use during the deployment.

HMCS VANCOUVER Sunday Information Sessions These info sessions are for family members and loved ones of serving members onboard HMCS VANCOUVER. These sessions begin at noon with a potluck lunch followed by the Commanding Officer’s briefing at 1pm. The Commanding Officer talks directly to families about what they have been up to, and answers any questions that you may have. Senior members of the Canadian Fleet Pacific Staff will also be on hand to address concerns and questions. Questions are encouraged.

An Adult Mindfulness session follows the briefing and begins at 2:30pm. Child minding is provided from 12:30-3:15pm.

Parenting Through Deployment Workshop Series As a parent, you’re the most important person in your child’s life. It’s normal for all parents to have questions at some point about parenting and to feel that they need support. Deployment parent support circles are open to anyone who is in a parenting role and wants to talk with other parents about their experiences parenting through deployment. Topics will focus on positive parenting while providing a safe atmosphere in which to vent stress, learn new skills and build connections within the military community. Space is limited,

In appreciation of our defence community Feel Good Yoga is providing a 4 class series just for YOU! This class offers a blend of Yoga, Pilates and fitness conditioning that challenges strength, balance and flexibility.

Formation Fun Day

Candidate will learn emergency scene management, recognition and treatment for conscious & unconscious choking emergencies, CPR level “C” for adults, children and infants, as well as the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

The Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt is holding its annual Formation Fun Day; a morale boosting day of fun and support for DND’s military and civilian workforce and their families. Formation Fun Day is a popular event with past attendances of about 2000 attendees and includes a number of interactive activities, displays, live music; appealing to all ages.

Have fun with music! This is one of our most popular programs, very lively and will be very enjoyable for you and your child. Through a partnership with Victoria Conservatory of Music, you and your child will listen to an Early Childhood Music Educator and have a chance to make your own music with a variety of instruments. For parents and their babies up to 24 months

The MFRC is inviting parents or guardians and their children (up to the age of 6) to join us for an hour of healthy breakfast snacks, great stories and interactive songs. Each family group will receive a book to take home with them. The programs runs eight events between September and June and is free but you must pre-register for each session. Another busy time of year approaches and parents need a break! Try the MFRC Casual Child Care Program for a few hours of respite or to get things done without your “little helper.” Take the time to destress yourself! A few hours of respite can be a reality. Book up to 1 week in advance, maximum 2 times per week, Casual Child Care is available for $9 per 3-hour session per child. Punch cards are available! Failure to develop a child’s movement skills subsequently reduces their interest and ability to participate in physical activity, and also limits their essential mobility skills into adulthood. Movement skills aren’t just for playing sports.

Movement skills are essential to basic health and survival.

Physical Literacy and PSP! Physical Literacy is the cornerstone of both participation and excellence in physical activity and sport and is gaining momentum in the area of recreation and sports. New evidence shows that there is a need to increase the knowledge of physical literacy and injury prevention by practitioners in children’s recreation programs.

Out of School Care Located in Belmont Park in Colwood, the MFRC provides Before and After School Care for children from Kindergarten to Grade 6 with both drop-off and pick-up at École John Stubbs Elementary School.

We can also accommodate children attending Victor Brodeur if bus arrangements have been done. The program runs 6:30am – 5:30pm during school days only. Spaces may still available for the 2016 school year or we are taking names for our waitlist.

Shifting Gears:

For Military Families in Transition Christina Van Starkenburg MFRC Volunteer Shifting Gears is part of the Veteran Family Program (VFP), which is a four-year pilot project aiming to help the MFRC better assist veterans and their families. The new group will help releasing members and their families experience the transition to the civilian community as a time of potential growth and development.

“Shifting Gears and the VFP work in partnership with other support services to addresses a portion of the needs in the veteran community,” said Kaitlyn Ross, the Veteran Family Program Coordinator. “[The program] helps empower people to build on their own strengths and move forward.”

Ross explained that one of the ways the program does that is by helping members explore their identity outside of the military framework.

Over four sessions, the Shifting Gears participants will look, not only at exploring their identity, but also at the emotional side of the transition more broadly. For instance, they will discuss different ways people can acknowledge their feelings to themselves and how they can communicate them to others effectively. Along with those topics, this group will teach the participants different strategies they can use to create new routines and connect to support systems in the civilian world.

Because it is important for the member and his or her partner to be on the same page during times of transition, both individuals are welcome to come to the sessions.

“Communication can be a big barrier when it comes to any change in a person’s life. [The

program] gives the family the opportunity to communicate with one another, see the other person’s perspective and get everyone on the same page, in order to build on the existing strength of the family unit,” said Ross.

Other programs with the VFP will help families learn how to manage their finances during transition, or how to explore alternative employment. However, Shifting Gears will focus solely on the socio-emotional aspects of the transition.

“It’s the whole concept of being proactive rather than being reactive, so that the transition is an opportunity for a family to move forward together. If somebody is proactive and aware of the triggers that they have and they are communicating with their family when they are stressed, then they are able to be more proactive in creating a successful transition” said Ross.

Starting October 25, Shifting Gears will run on Tuesday nights from 6 pm until 9 pm. The program is looking for military connected families of releasing members to participate in the first group to help evaluate and shape the program to meet the needs of the community. Army Cadets The Royal Canadian Army Cadets appeal to teenagers craving exciting outdoor activities where their personal limits as individuals and team-members will be tested. The hard core outdoor-oriented will love the challenge!

Army cadets develop abilities in the use of map and compass, GPS technology, orienteering, first-aid, camping, and survival skills, canoeing, abseiling, trekking, mountain biking, etc. As they get more experienced some will be selected for parachuting, white-water rafting and glacier climbing. They will also learn to become outdoor leaders.

Cadets in turn make valuable contributions to their communities.

Cadets Sea Cadets Royal Canadian Sea Cadets learn about the naval and maritime environment by participating in a variety of activities on and off the water.

Sea Cadets specialize in sailing, seamanship, shipboard life, naval communications, power boat handling, boat repair, and marine engineering.

Selected senior cadets have the opportunity to attend international exchanges, to sail aboard a Tall Ship or participate in ship deployments aboard Royal Canadian Navy and Coast Guard ships. Additionally, Sea Cadets can compete for a chance to participate in annual sailing regattas.

Air Cadets Royal Canadian Air Cadets participate in a variety of fun and challenging activities. There is something for everyone – no matter what their personal interests may be. The outdoor enthusiast will appreciate learning survival skills for flight crew.

The athlete will appreciate physical education and recreation, including a variety of sporting activities like biathlon and Olympicstyle marksmanship. The artists will find their niche in the music program. The curious will appreciate the hands-on activities such as building model air crafts. The scholarly will appreciate an introduction to the various tools and technologies linked to aviation.

The dreamers will appreciate the evolution of technology and the advancements of the aerospace era, including the importance of Canadian participation.

Every cadet will have the chance to participate in flight activities, and some top senior cadets may even earn a scholarship to obtain their glider licence or private pilot licence or the chance to represent Canada on the world stage by participating in an international exchange.

Snorkelling for Youth)

(8yrs +) Does your child want to see what it’s like to breath underwater just like Mom or Dad? Or perhaps you’re considering a family vacation, and you’d like to bring your children diving with you! The PSP Aquarius Dive club is offering this program to the formation for next to nothing. Costs go to cover the expenses of the program. The Instructor for the program is a qualified dive instructor with PADI and is there to support the needs of all children. It’s fun, easy and safe. Register early to avoid class cancellation.

(5-7 yrs) Can’t wait to turn 8 to try SCUBA diving?

No problem! Aquarius Dive Club offers children as young as 5 years old their 1st breath on SCUBA with the Supplied Air Snorkelling for Youth (SASY) Program.

In the SASY program, children 5-8yrs old wear a Buoyancy Compensator Device (BCD) and SCUBA equipment, but they stay on the surface, and experience breathing from a regulator while floating.

The BCD is like a life preserver, and it holds a real scuba tank with a functioning regulator and air gauge. However, the BCD is not weighted, so the child remains positively buoyant at the surface of the pool. It’s fun, easy and safe. All instructors are PADI certified dive instructors. Swim Kids Level 9 F15AQU317 In this level swimmers are encouraged to try a combination of strokes and kicks for fitness to complete the 400m endurance swim. Strokes are refined and participants learn side-stroke and head-first shallow dives.

Strokes are further refined, butterfly is improved upon, scissor kick and side stroke are introduced as a warm up/ cool down for fitness. An endurance swim of 500 meters will help prepare them for advanced lifesaving courses such as Bronze Medallion.

Sports Formation Sports

YEARLY SPORTS OVERVIEW

Esquimalt Formation Sports organizes sports teams, leagues, and tournaments from the Formation/Base level to international competition.

The programs offered are: • Formation Cock of the Walk • Formation Teams (Pacific Regional and CAF National Championships) • CISM (International Sports)

Intersection Sports A variety of sports are included as programs within our PSP Recreation Department.

Beach Volleyball and Slo-pitch typically run May through August while Ice Hockey runs from September to April. These leagues are made up of various formation units or sections. Those eligible to participate are military members (Regular Force, Class B or C Reservists), DND civilian employees, full and part-time NPF employees of CFB Esquimalt and integral/lodger units. Military personnel undergoing or awaiting training must be posted to CFB Esquimalt and have authorization from the unit CO to be eligible to participate in a league.

CISM (Conseil International du Sport Militaire/International Military Sports Council) CISM is an international sports association composed of, and open to, the armed forces of participating nations. The fundamental aim of CISM is to promote sport activity and physical education between armed forces across the globe as a means to foster world peace. Formation Teams (Esquimalt Tritons) Esquimalt Formation Sports teams are a combination of Base and Fleet athletes. The Tritons represent Esquimalt Formation at the Pacific Regional Championships, and if successful represent the Pacific Region at the National Championships. Military personnel (Regular Force and Class A, B and C Reservists) are eligible to play on Formation Teams. Ball Hockey The Tritons Ball Hockey Team is always looking for interested players to join the team. The team begins participation in a civilian ball-hockey league in late April to prepare for the Regional Ball Hockey Championships in June. This year the team was successful at Regionals and will be playing in Nationals in July.

A Phenomenal Woman

Nathalie Scalabrini Jackie Carlé presents Phenomenal Woman Award to Nathalie Scalabrini.

Rosalee van Stelten MFRC Volunteer When Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Nathalie Scalabrini was in high school, she dreamed of becoming an architect.

“Looking at the schooling required and the money required made me change my mind.”

Instead of designing architectural structures, she has built a lifetime of service. In 1989, when the Navy opened all trades to women, Nathalie, who was a sea cadet for many years, wanted to join.

“I was pregnant at the time,” she says.

“So, I postponed my dream.”

In 1966, her son was six years old.

“I decided That’s it! I’m going back and I’m doing it.”

One reason she was nominated for the 2016 MFRC Phenomenal Woman award is her tenacity in challenging situations.

Navy life is not all fun and games.

“I love my career but there were times that I wanted to quit. I persevered and

made it work,” she says.

Nathalie has given 20 years of dedicated service as a Naval Electronic Sensor Operator and is the first woman in her trade to reach her rank. She has served at sea many times, on many ships, on both the east and west coasts.

Lt(N) Alicia Morris, Leadership Officer at Canadian Forces Fleet School Esquimalt where Nathalie is senior instructor for Primary Leadership Qualification says, “she is a professional leader, a dedicated sailor in her duties and mentor serving the Royal Canadian Navy and the Fleet.”

The Chief is also a phenomenal volunteer.

“She is incredibly invested in her community,” says Morris, “which is demonstrated through her participation and action.”

Among other organizations, Nathalie is squad member of CFB Esquimalt Urban Search and Rescue; field technician with the Search and Rescue Dogs Association of Victoria; and superintendent of the St. John’s Ambulance Division 61C Youth

Program. She is just retiring from eight years with the MARPAC Defence Women Advisory Group.

Her daughter Alexandra Saumere helps train a Search and Rescue Dog named Moxxii. She says her Mom promotes “the sense of giving back ...without expecting anything in return.”

Nathalie’s own mother is the biggest influence in her life. “Receiving this award... it is because she brought me with her everywhere when I was growing up, to all her community events. She taught me you’ve got to give back in order to receive.”

What is she proudest of in her life? “My kids.” Her son Danny is 26, Alexandra is 12. A new foster son, Kyle, is turning 21. When Nathalie sees their support of friends and community, “It makes me so proud. So proud.”

Many years ago Nathalie Scalabrini discovered a rule for living: Alone you can go faster, but together we will go further. She applies that philosophy to both her service and her family life.

*Managing Angry Moments (MAM) MAM helps participants learn how to use anger constructively. It is a course intended for everyone as we all feel anger at various times. Participants gain a better understanding of their relationship with anger.

This course is not anger management counselling and is not appropriate for individuals with severe anger management problems.

Stress is the #1 workplace disability issue today and appears to be a growing problem. Stress Take Charge is a course for people who want to gain a better understanding of their stress reaction, how to increase their resiliency in stressful situations, and how to learn proven coping skills for managing their stress response more effectively.

The MARPAC Health & Wellness Team is a group of helping professionals who work collaboratively to address health and wellness concerns in the MARPAC community. Our primary initiative is the MARPAC Health & Wellness Strategy - an ambitious project involving over 70 people determined to create a culture of health and wellness within the defence team in five priority areas: (1) Active Living (2) Addictions Free Living (3) Healthy Nutrition and Weight Wellness (4) Organizational Wellness (5) Social and Mental Wellness The Strategy is a collaborative initiative that includes military, civilian and family members. Six Working Groups meet regularly to identify ways in which our community health outcomes can be positively impacted. For instance, the Healthy Nutrition and Weight Wellness Working Group conducted fleet galley surveys and the outcome has been the rearrangement of unhealthy foods (duff) and the prominent display of fresh, cut fruits and vegetables.

Healthy environments greatly affect people’s food choices. When healthy foods are more readily available, their consumption increases.

Clubs Aquarius Dive Club No pagers, no phones, no boss! At 90 feet it’s a different kind of pressure.

After 25 years, Aquarius has grown to become the largest active dive club in the Canadian Forces. With the Aquarius Dive Club divers can take advantage of all the premiere dive sites Vancouver Island has to offer.

We offer Entry level “Basic Open Water” courses as well as “Advanced Open Water” specialties including: Dry Suit, Deep, Night, Wreck, Enriched Air / Nitrox, Photography, Rescue and Dive Master. All courses are affordably priced and include classroom time, equipment, pool dives, ocean dives and boat dives as required.

Unrestricted by geography, you can regularly find Aquarius Dive Club on the Boeing 737 sunk in Chemainus, HMCS Cape Breton and HMCS Saskatchewan in Nanaimo, HMCS Columbia in Campbell River. You will find us on our annual trek up to Telegraph Cove for a fantastic weekend of diving and good times. You can join us for our overnight camping & dive trips to China Creek, diving the waterfilled missile silo in Washington and diving in other waters further afield. You can also simply enjoy one of our many wonderful local dive sites in the pristine BC waters.

As a club, we’re able to take advantage of special pricing on dive charters gear and dive travel adventure. In the Aquarius Dive Club, you may find yourself travelling with members to the tropics on such trips as the beautiful warm waters of Cozumel, Mexico in January 2017.

We have valuable assets such as a portable compressor and trailer as well as a great group of divers always on the lookout of the next adventure; we make diving affordable and fun no matter what your skill levels are.

Shotokan Karate Club Karate is a striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques such as knifehands. The aim of the Karate Club is to teach traditional Shotokan Karate, and to foster the development of karate through seminars, tournaments, and exposure to world-class karate and other martial arts instructors. Such benefits of this karate club include: • Many different training times and two different locations; • Affordable way to learn or practice your karate skills; • A fun way to work on your cardio, flexibility, coordination, stress relief, and quicken your reflexes while training in a safe and supervised environment.

Training is conducted at the Naden Athletic Centre, with children’s/adult classes Mon/Wed 1830-2000 hrs, and adults Fri 1800-1900. Beginners are accepted throughout the year. Training is also conducted at the Colwood Pacific Activity Centre on Tue/Thu, with children and adults training together at 1830-2000.

Some of the benefits include: • Instruction in Ocean kayaking with an emphasis on safety and rescue techniques.

• New members are given the club’s basic kayaking course, which is included as part of the first year membership fee.

This course is conducted in two parts: the basics and rescues in the Naden Pool followed by an ocean phase in Esquimalt Harbour.

• Signing out a kayak from our fleet of 20+ at any time.

• The use of the scheduled NAC pool times to practice and work on their skills.

Model Railroad Club The model Railway Club started as an N Scale (1/160) NTRAK modular layout in December 1997. Currently the NTRAK layout is 30 plus feet by 40 plus feet. These modules are continuously updated as new techniques and experiences are gained including Digital Command Control (DCC) systems. The N Scale layout is currently completing conversion to DCC but this does not preclude DC locomotives from being run on the layout.

The HO Scale (1/87) modular layout is also 30 plus by 40 plus feet and has completed conversion to DCC. Again this does not preclude DC locomotives from enjoying the wonders of the layout. Some of these modules depict logging operations, mining operations and a locomotive servicing facility.

Both of these layouts have been on public display and have won multiple awards as “Best Operating Layout�, “Favourite Operating Layout�; and “Best Module� at train shows in Victoria and Nanaimo. Our layout at “Christmas in the Village� is the continued on page 62

MARPAC RIDERS / CFB Esquimalt Motorcycle Club The focus of the Club is three-fold: 1. To promote the social aspect of group riding we provide avenues for socializing and participating in group-ride activities, including charity ride events; 2. To assist in you “self-help” repairs we provide limited repair shop facilities and equipment (bike hoist, and fully kitted tool kit), including instructional classes; and,

3. To develop rider skills we provide rider Mentorship training “ride-alongs” with experienced riders that: help members develop group riding skills; help members hone their riding skills in preparation for their motorcycle skills or Class 6 road tests; or, simply enhance their everyday riding skills.

And for those wanting to learn to ride from scratch: We are now affiliated with “Learn to Ride” (a motorcycle training company that teaches new riders), who provide Club members with a discount on training courses. They provide the bikes; you simply provide the enthusiasm to learn.
