Motoring Vehicle Review:

All New Honda H-RV Tim Barnes-Clay

Move over Nissan - the Honda HR-V is back – and it aims to go head to head with the ubiquitous Qashqai.

The

MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) was originally created in 1999, but, like a jaded rock star, it took a hiatus in order to make a come-back when the time was right.

Indeed, the front wheel drive car is far more appealing than last century’s original model.

It offers a blend of assets with civilized styling, coupled with space and flexibility.

When it comes to tech, the HR-V offers a useful infotainment system, with features including a seven inch touchscreen, app integration and web browsing.

As well as benchmark characteristics like the city-brake active gadgetry, Honda’s driver assistance safety technologies are standard on most cars in the line-up.

Among the list of anti-crash equipment is intelligent speed assist, which marries the car’s traffic sign recognition function with its speed regulator to earmark changes in the legal limit. This then restricts the haste of the HR-V appropriately.

The icing on the cake is that Honda’s HR-V delivers fuel

economy among the best in class with its choice of 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel and 1.5 litre i-VTEC petrol engines.

You could even say the motor is ‘Boris proof’ with both the oil-burner and petroleum powered models certified for Euro 6 emissions.

The HR-V’s resourceful performance is aided by its design. The side view of the vehicle is perhaps its best angle. Distinctive, sculpted lines, reminiscent of a coupe, join together with predictable, yet robust, SUV (sport utility vehicle) aesthetics.

Inside, soft touch fabrics and chrome highlight the premium direction Honda is continually going in. I’ve seen better in some of the firm’s cars, but this is still a decent cabin.

Getting comfortable behind the wheel is easy and, with oodles of leg and headroom for at least four-up – as well as enough boot space for domestic needs, such as the weekly shop and a tot’s buggy - the HR-V is definitely modern family motoring material.

Euro-NCAP crash test data won’t be available until this November, but Honda is confident its HR-V will achieve the top five star safety rating.

With 27 per cent of the body structure created in high strength steel – and more airbags than you can shake a stick at - there’s certainly a feeling of wellbeing.

For added peace of mind, Honda has been named the most reliable auto maker for the last nine years in a row.

The dealer and customer service levels in the UK are among the best in the automotive industry, too.

On the road, the diesel six speed manual in flagship EX trim is no sports car, but it pulls well enough to get from 0-62mph in 10.5 seconds.

The steering feels a little numb and there’s some wind noise at motorway speeds, but otherwise the car feels very much a Qashqai challenger.

In other words, it’s a pleasant tool for the family and does what it says on the tin well.

AVOID car holiday

HELL

A holiday is a wonderful opportunity to relax and take things easy, but it’s also when we place extra demands on our car. Whether planning a break on UK soil, or a trip by ferry to the continent, chances are that our motor is going to travel more miles than usual, and this could bring about unwanted trouble if we don’t take precautions.

Holiday car-breakdowns are misery-inducing and the last thing you want is to be sat on the side of the road in a sweaty car when you should be outside enjoying the sunshine.

Most car faults are simple things which could easily be avoided by a pre-holiday inspection. So, at least a week before you are due to go away, carry out these simple checks to reduce the risk of your dream break turning into a holiday nightmare!

CHECKLIST

- Check that your car won’t be due for an MOT or service while you’re away.

- Check all the fluid levels – engine oil and coolant; brake, clutch and power steering reservoirs; screen wash; automatic transmission fluid if appropriate – and top up if required.

- Inspect the fan belt for cracks and separation of the belt plies and get a new one fitted if necessary. Consider carrying a spare.

- Check the condition of the tyres, including the spare. Inspect for cuts, abrasions, bulges or embedded nails or stones. This could also be a good opportunity to use the jack and ensure it works properly!

- Check the tread and tyre pressure. If you are likely to be driving at sustained high

speeds or with the car fully loaded, you may need to raise the pressure to higher than normal.

- Check the condition of the wiper blades and clean them with a tissue dipped in screen wash concentrate. If they look damaged or if they smear a clean screen, renew them.

- Make sure all external lights are functioning, including rear fog lights. Try the horn, clean the windows and wipe the lamp lenses and door mirrors.

- Finally, make sure you have a warning triangle, spare bulbs and a First Aid Kit, especially if you are travelling abroad as they are required in certain countries.

Prevention is always better than cure, but don’t forget to take your breakdown cards and membership details – just in case!

Recipe

Plum Bakewell Traybake

For the pastry la yer you will need;

200g plain flour 100g cold cubed butter A pinch salt 3tbsp caster su gar 2 egg yolks 3tbsp milk

For the sponge & filling you will need;

200g caster su gar 200g soft butter 100g self raising flour 100g ground alm onds 2tsp baking powd er A pinch salt A drop vanilla 4 eggs 6 plums Some jam of your choice A handful flaked almonds and some icing sugar.

My simple traybake version of the classic Bakewell Tart is made up of a crisp shortcrust pastry, a moist almond sponge, and juicy slices of fresh plum. It can be frozen so you’ve always got something delicious on hand for impromptu guests or occasions.

Method for the Sponge & Filling: Method for the Pastry: 1.

Place the flour and butter in a large mixing bowl and rub together between your fingers until it resembles bread crumbs.

Add the caster sugar, salt and egg yolks and stir together with a cutlery knife. The mix should start to form several large lumps.

Add the milk a tablespoon at a time and stir between each addition, until the dough comes together to form a ball. Once formed, wrap in clingfilm and chill for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 200c (fan) then grease and line a 20cmx20cm (or similar) brownie tray with baking paper. Remove the pastry from the fridge and roll out to the thickness of a pound coin on a floured surface and cut to the size of the tin’s base.

Carefully transfer the pastry to the tin and squash into the corners, ensuring the entire base is covered. Prick the surface of the pastry with a fork to prevent bubbles and bake for 10 minutes.

While the pastry is baking, make the sponge mix.

As your pastry is cooking, whisk together the sugar, butter, flour, almonds, baking powder, salt, vanilla and eggs until thick and creamy.

Take some jam and spread over the cooked pastry layer. Slice the plums thinly and line the jam with half the pieces. Now top with the sponge mix.

With the remaining plum slices, line the top of the sponge. Sprinkle the almonds over that to form the last layer.

Reduce the oven temperature to 180c (fan) and bake the complete traybake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown.

Once cooked, remove the traybake from the oven and cool in the tin.

When back to room temperature remove from the tin and slice into bars.

Take your icing sugar and mix with a splash of water to form a glaze- drizzle over the bars and serve.

THAME OPENS ITS DOORS TO FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE HOSPICE CHARITY

As the crowds swarmed in for Tuesday’s

bustling market, Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC) officially opened its brand new retail store on Cornmarket, Thame, for the first time, with special guest, Mayor of Thame, Cllr Nichola Dixon.

The new outlet houses a dedicated children’s wear section, with well-known high street and designer name brands up for grabs, as well as ladies’ and men’s wear, jewellery, handbags, bric-a-brac and much more.

Phil Moody, FNHC head of retail commented: “We’re really excited to be opening our Thame shop as we have some fantastic supporters here, and in the surrounding villages. Many local people have received specialist care and support from Florence Nightingale Hospice services, either in the hospice itself or athome, or perhaps know of someone who has been supported in this way.

“We’ve been working on this project for a long time now and the shop has come together nicely. We have some great children’s wear items up for sale – with a selection of donated kids’ swimwear, for our opening, courtesy of Sunuva, so we’re hoping this will really go down well with local families.”

Phil added: “Good quality donations are always welcome, so please have a clearout of your summer wardrobes and drop them down to us at the shop. We are also delighted to announce the Charity is hoping to open a second retail outlet in Haddenham in the very near future, to act as a donation and ‘feeder’ store for Thame.

This shop will be manned by volunteers and we hope will be well-supported by the local community, which includes our Haddenham Community Fundraising Group.”

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity currently has five traditional shops including; Chinnor, Leighton Buzzard, Aylesbury, Wendover and Winslow, as well as a Furniture Showroom ( to be relaunched soon) and eBay store.

FNHC needs to raise over £600,000 this year to provide vital funding for in-patient and at-home hospice services for families battling life-limiting illness across Bucks, Beds and parts of Oxon.

The eighth annual Thame Food Festival takes place on Saturday 26th September 2015, bringing a stellar line-up of celebrity chefs and a wealth of good food and drink to one of Oxfordshire’s prettiest historic market towns.

Cooking live this year in the cookery theatre sponsored by AGA will be Raymond Blanc OBE, who makes the short journey every year from Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons to support the festival and delight visitors with his passion for cooking with fresh, seasonal produce.

He will be joined by Sophie Grigson who has recently opened Sophie’s Kitchen at the Story Museum in Pembroke Street, Oxford, offering good homemade food dishes for visitors old and young alongside Saturday morning classes to inspire a love of cooking in children. Sophie will cook some of her favourite dishes from the café in her session.

Breton baker Richard Bertinet will be sharing the secrets of his sell-out bread making classes at The Bertinet Cookery School in one of the highlights in the cookery theatre this year as well as signing copies of his many baking volumes in the pop-up book shop.

The festival’s first ever cookery demo devised especially for children will be with BBC One’s MasterChef winner 2013 Natalie Coleman, who has recently taken up the role of Ambassador of Central Street Cookery School at St Luke’s Community Centre in London.

This one is just for the kids who love the excitement of learning how to cook and trying new foods.

Food writer Jane Hornby will be making sure the Big Thame Bake rises to perfection, with QVC cookery presenter Simon Brown keeping the cookery theatre running smoothly.

Visitors will be able to meet the celebrity chefs in the pop-up book shop and restock their cookery book library at the same time, as well as enjoy a fantastic free foodie day out.

Acupunture Being able to move our legs freely is an essential part of staying well. This becomes painfully apparent if you are unfortunate enough to suffer from aching hips or feet.

Acupuncturist at Thame Therapy Clinic, Andy Roscoe has worked with these issues for 22 years. He has observed that in the absence of injury, stiffness in the hips often starts after a long period of unresolved emotional turmoil, which starts to weaken the major weight bearing joints of the body. Other signs of this are often found in the feet commonly called ‘plantar fasciitis’.

turn restricting normal joint movement.

Fact: Actually, the same, often better, results can be achieved with short sharp, relatively

highly intense, dare I say ‘fun’ workouts, in your home, wearing that grotty T-shirt and dodgy shorts hoarded from your school days.”

It has been a long-held belief that to improve

fitness you need to start with LSD (Long Slow Distance) training. Right now, as you read this, people all over the country are reinstating their gym membership, peddling away furiously on exercise bikes and clocking up the miles, in a frantic bid to “start as they mean to go on” getting ready for the last couple of summer months.

If this is you, do yourself, your family and social life a favour… step away from the machine! Not only is this way of training repetitive and (let’s be honest) pretty tedious, but with lifestyles getting increasingly more hectic it is becoming fairly unsustainable for the majority of us.

Thankfully, there is another way.

It has been proven that a short burst of exercise can significantly increase both cardiovascular and muscular fitness and through first-hand experience I’d like to explain how this could benefit you.

Throughout my career as an Olympic rower, the goal, apart from the obvious, was always to try to get the most out of each session and, in particular, to try to reduce training time, with the aim of increasing the amount of time I would have to recover and retain some form of

a ‘normal life’.

So when I decided to retrain as a personal trainer I decided that when working with clients, my ethos would always be to increase their fitness and improve their health in short, hard, but manageable sessions. In just 20 minutes, 3-4 times per week I have seen fantastic results for those who are dedicated to pushing themselves hard.

The best bit? You don’t have to go to a gym. In fact, you don’t have to leave your living room.

In just 10 weeks I’ll virtually guarantee an improved sense of wellbeing, an increase in muscle tone and almost certainly a reduction in fat. The exception to this is if you’re into serious competition or training for a marathon. This obviously won’t be the plan for you but, then again, you probably know that already.

Of course, the harder you exercise, the more recovery you’ll need. I’m saving you time sweating, so be nice to yourself and take some of that time to just sit (or lie) in peace and give your mind some time off from the phone or laptop that you might ordinarily be bookending your gym workout with.

Hormone Release the Bowen Way With Jen Webster, Bowen Therapist

This year I have expanded my practice to incorporate The (NST) Neurostructural Integration Technique ® as an Advanced Practitioner. This work has been developed

by Michael Nixon Levy, and inspired by Tom Bowen. I have furthered this work with specialist (TMJ ) Temporomandibular Joint and Hormonal certification, and now run a new clinic: ‘Hormone Release the Bowen Way’

As a Bowen practitioner my job is twofold: 1.

To initially address your pain and / or address your pain and the issues you present with moving you to better balance.

2.

To assist in guiding you to achieve the level of health you want.

It is, however, not my job to dictate terms, but to provide options.

The law of Nature requires a balance of the following...

Physical exercise and good posture, fresh air and sunshine, pure water and proper nutrition, proper sleep, relaxation, recreation.

Utopia? Sadly, this is rarely achieved as we all stray from the path and engage in practices that go against the Natural Laws. Suddenly the presence of pain emerges in our lives and becomes a reality, which comes in a variety of packages e.g. Back Pain, Neck pain, Headaches, Fatigue, Heart problems.

Generally the quickest way to silence a pain is by taking a drug or painkillers; however this is only a temporary measure at best and it

may be more suitably treated by Bowen/NST therapy. Bowen Therapy works to correct the energy balance which will involve working towards: reduction of pain levels, improvement in diet and general feeling of wellbeing.

Over the last few months I have treated so many lovely, appreciative clients of all ages, the youngest being 18 months old and the oldest a very sprightly 85 year old.

I have treated a range of presenting conditions most commonly back, neck, knees and shoulders; jaw issues and ‘tennis elbows all resending well to Bowen Therapy. My current client list includes 3 ladies I’m seeing through pregnancy. Two ladies are convinced Bowen Therapy helped conception despite fertility issues.

In a few cases medical intervention has been necessary, in which I have had an input, and therefore have seen client’s pre and post operatively.

Physical therapy alone, however, will not always provide the perfect solution: ongoing clinical work often goes hand in hand with emotional and nutritional support and proper hydration, all of which depend on the willingness of the individual, to whom I will advise accordingly.

Travel Review

CROATIA has it all This month’s Travel Review has been written by one of Traveltime’s customers, Neil Topping, who regularly books his holidays with this quaint, local Travel Agent.

Whilst Croatia is well known for its coastline and the myriad of islands in the Adriatic, there is so much more to the country whose history and topography combine to make it several mini countries in one nation.

In the last three years, my wife and I have had three two centre holidays booked through Traveltime in Watlington which have included a short break in Dubrovnik, stays on the islands of Brac and Sipan and week long stays in the coastal resorts of Tucepi and Cavtat.

In addition to the coastal region and islands, there is the dramatic hinterland that incorporates both lakes and mountains that can be visited by touring both Croatia and the adjacent country of Bosnia-Hercegovina. Some visitors combine an organised tour with a week in one of the coastal resorts. The tours can also take in the capital city of Zagreb in the north of the country and the port city of Split and, of course, the world famous city of Dubrovnik which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Both Split and Dubrovnik are the departure ports for many of the islands which are as varied in their appeal as the mainland towns. There is the jet set vibrancy of Hvar, the peace and tranquillity of Sipan, which would appeal to couples, and, in between, the more family orientated Brac. On Brac, we stayed in the resort of Bol in a hotel adjacent to the tree lined promenade and a few

hundred yards from the iconic shingle beach known as Zlatni rat (Golden Cape).

For many years, small cruise ships sailing from northern Croatia have provided a leisurely way of visiting the islands, a more active means of transport are the ferries that allow you to control your own island hopping itinerary.

Our holidays in Croatia have been taken in early June and late September when the weather is pleasantly warm and if there are storms, you have the reassurance that the sun will soon reappear. The sea is at its most enticing in September. Beaches are generally pebbly and or shingle. Most hotels have swimming pools and bathing platforms adjacent to the sea, which vary from the rudimentary to landscaped sun bathing areas crafted out of the rocks.

Since our first visit in 2012, Croatia has now joined the EU, but is not a member of the eurozone. Its currency is the Kuna, which is linked to the euro, eating out is inexpensive and, in most places, there is a wide variety of restaurants serving local and international cuisine.

If you haven’t been to Croatia, but want to try something new in a country that is experienced in tourism, but has maintained its own identity then consider visiting this welcoming Balkan nation that is less than three hours flying time from London.

10th-16th August is National Allotments Week During World War II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables.

Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment.

To me the very word ‘allotment’ evokes memories of my granddad and post-war community spirit.

During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity until very recently.

As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket, and vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy!

There’s an old saying: what goes around comes around, and it encapsulates perfectly

the fate of allotments which are currently enjoying a popularity surge.

Suddenly we’re concerned about food in a big way. The number of food banks is growing as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shopbought fruit and veg, while the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of the masses.

And what about all those thousands of food-miles our strawberries and courgettes clock up on their journey to the supermarket shelves?

Surely that’s damaging the environment. Then there’s the thorny problem of childhood obesity. The list of foodrelated concerns seems to be growing exponentially.

In

the

absence

of

clear

leadership from the top, many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food.

Yet modern housing often means tiny back gardens and frequently no front garden, so where are we going to grow all this lovely produce? The answer of course is to acquire an allotment and many people are doing just that.

To join them simply approach your council. Price and availability varies around the county. In some areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments much more seriously and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. If a plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to rent half or find a like-minded friend to share it with.
