The new BMW 320d M Sport

“I wish this middle seat was more comfortable,” said my wife on our family road trip back to the UK from Spain.

That was the only complaint made about the 2015 BMW 320d M Sport Saloon during the 1300 mile journey. The boot even took our luggage – and our tot’s buggy.

Speaking of toddlers, my two year old chilled out quickly in her child seat. My other children, aged five and eight, took it in turns to join me up front, perched on their boosters.

My son was particularly enthralled by the ‘M’ look of the car. I couldn’t help but be of the same mind, because if you’re five or 75, the M Sport package draws the eye. The lowered sport suspension, jauntier front and rear bumpers, and 19-inch wheels are suitably aggressive, while inside the cabin, there are supportive leather seats, as well as climate control and those all-important ‘M’ badges.

I had to motor solo from northern Spain to the Costa Blanca where we were holidaying. That was 400 miles, so, all in all, I clocked 1700 miles without sharing the driving – and in all that time I never felt exhausted. My wife was meant to be my co-driver, but ended up sandwiched between our two year old and whichever other child wasn’t riding shotgun. As any parent will know, however relaxed a tot might seem, they can still be demanding – and mummy had to sit next to our little lady at all times - the explanation behind the centre seat gripe.

The BMW 3 Series has been given sexier lights and bumpers, new engines and a subtly altered interior.

The fresh £33,635 320d M Sport automatic is particularly important, because it’s the sports saloon of choice in Britain.

Its 2 litre turbodiesel engine churns out a meaty 187bhp and gives the car a substantial lick of speed. And when you offset its 0-62mph dash of 7.2 seconds and 146mph maximum speed with an average 67.3mpg, it’s hard to find fault.

Indeed, the four-door saloon is built to live on the motorway, as my family Euro-trip confirmed. The agility of the ride is a real advantage, the sat-nav is top-notch and the seats (apart from the middle bench area) amount to long-haul heaven.

The BMW is more than capable of hammering flat out across the Continent hour after hour. The 320d M Sport will tear up unoccupied stretches of blacktop at 140mph, no worries. This halves the official fuel consumption figure, but when it’s 2pm on a Sunday in mainland Europe and school starts at 9am on Monday in Britain, it’s amazing how little you care about that.

With the Eurotunnel taking just 35 minutes, I had to remember that, back in the UK, my higher-thanyou’d-risk-in-Britain motorway pace needed harnessing, big style.

The latest BMW 320d M Sport is not only one of the most awesome compact executive cars ever – it is a thoroughly wholesome family motor, too.

Recipe For these indulgent muffins, you will need;

400g pla in flour, 3t sp baking powder, 1tsp bicarbo nate, 50g light brown sugar, 300g caster sugar, 2tsp cinnamon, pin ch salt, 2 large eggs, 200ml vegetab le oil, 250g butterm ilk, 3 large do llops creme fra iche, 2tbsp milk, 2 large handfuls blackberries, 150g white chocolate (chopped into chunks ), 1 handful raspberries

IN SEASON: Blackberries

To decoration you

will need;

100g white chocola te and some delicate sprinkles/ a sprig of mint (optional).

As blackberries are coming into season, I thought I would scour the hedgerows around my village and make use of these free fruits in a new seasonal recipe. What I’ve come up with is a really delicious muffin variety spiked with cinnamon, raspberries, white chocolate and, of course, blackberries! These are ideal for a quick grab and go snack and would also work well as a warmed pudding served with a dollop of creme fraiche…

Method for the Muffins: 1.

Preheat the oven to 200c (fan) and line a 12 hole muffin tray with large cases.

2.

Take your flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, sugars, cinnamon and salt and sift into a large mixing bowl.

Lightly mix together to fully combine.

3.

Now crack the eggs into a large jug and add the vegetable oil, buttermilk, creme fraiche and milk. Whisk together.

Add to the dry mixture in one go and stir until roughly combined. Avoid overmixing to ensure a light, moist texture.

4.

Toss the blackberries and white chocolate chunks lightly in a little flour then fold into the muffin batter (again mixing as little as possible). Leave to sit for 15 minutes.

5.

Spoon the batter between the muffin cases until 3/4 full. Take your raspberries and push one into the top of each muffin. Place

in the oven on a middle shelf and bake for 20-25 minutes. Once risen and golden brown, transfer to a wire rack to cool.

To decorate: 1.

When your muffins are completely cool, melt the white chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Leave to cool a little then drizzle over the tops.

Sprinkle on decorations and scatter mint leaves for colour.

Bowen Therapy: The case files...

With Jen Webster, Bowen Therapist

I first wrote about her story in June 2014 with a follow up in April. Lynda prompted me to write about her again after listening to an interview on Radio 4: Inside Health: Wednesday 22 July.

This debate, between an orthopaedic consultant, Inside Health’s Doctor and a surgeon who was also the medical director of BUPA, explored the usefulness of arthroscopic surgery in the light of evidence that intervention is not always required or indeed useful. The conclusion, in brief, was that of ‘watchful waiting’ to see if the knee gets better with conservative treatment.

Lynda first came to see me early in 2012 following major gynae surgery. During our initial

consultation I uncovered ‘old’ issues relating to back and hip pain, and knee injuries from skiing accidents, problematic hot flushes and tinnitus. She responded very well to Bowen treatments and reported: ‘I felt enormous benefits. At each appointment my issues were taken into consideration, the sessions were gentle, hugely relaxing and I believe contributed to my speed pain free recovery. Both tinnitus and hot flushes subsided, and back issues resolved.”

Lynda was able to go on a planned skiing holiday. Unfortunately she sustained a bad knee injury at this time, which required arthroscopic surgery. Regular Bowen treatments resumed.

Lynda said, “Once again Jen supported me through this process of recovery and renewed my confidence in my physical ability.”

Earlier this year Lynda was involved in another skiing incident which aggravated her knee giving her pain, weakness and restricted movement. She went for an orthopaedic consultation. An MRI scan was recommended, with a view to operating again but Bowen Therapy continued throughout.

Prior to the MRI appointment Lynda had a fully functioning knee - with full range of movement and no pain. She decided not to proceed with the scan and has not needed any orthopaedic follow up.

I have been treating Lynda for several years, through surgery, injuries and helping her manage the effects of her physically demanding job. Aches and pains are now managed by regular maintenance treatments - she can work, attend fitness classes and has become a competent runner - now frequently running 10k Lynda comments: “I now feel good about myself, Bowen therapy has helped me through some tough times - with Jen’s support I feel really balanced inside and out. Bowen is the most therapeutic relaxing and TREAT ME time.

Having listened to the Inside Health debate, I absolutely support the theory that surgical intervention was not appropriate at this time. It was suggested that physiotherapy ( conservative management ) could be the treatment of choice, though this was the only method used in trials.

I would like to stress that Bowen Therapy is my treatment of choice and, as Jen has a medical background in Theatre Nursing, I always feel that she will direct me to the medics should the need arise.”

With costumes and headdresses packed, routines memorised and excitement barely contained, our local Performanze Dance group descended on a very busy Disneyland Paris for the performance of their young lives.

excitement barely contained, our local Performanze dance group descended on a very busy Disneyland Paris for the performance of their young lives.

The 22 brave young dancers took the Videopolis Theatre in the heart of Disney by storm, and delighted an international audience with their 30 minute show.

With a mixture of group, small group, duet and solo dances, the show flew by, with every routine a highlight and every dancer wearing enormous smiles, it was clear they were having a super time as well as putting on a great show.

Kim Priddle, mum to one of the dancers, spoke for all the parents when she said: “I would just like to say a massive thank you to Rosie Easton and Jill Bartlett for all their hard work for months and months of Disney rehearsals, and all the hard work that went into so many professional-looking costumes. On the day of the show we were all up at 6am to get ready and get all the dancers with hair and makeup on in time for their 11am show; Rosie was there right the way through, making sure we got everyone through the security checks and making sure that everything ran smoothly.

The show was truly wonderful and very emotional for me and I am sure all the other parents and family members who were there to see it. It was a very proud mummy moment and an experience neither I nor Keira will ever forget.”

Rosie Easton, School Principal, said: “Thank you to ALL children and parents for ALL your hard work and support at Disney. The children were treasures backstage, made all their costume changes and gave it their all. The children have come so very far in this experience as people and dancers and they have been a wonderful group.

I can say I am truly very proud of each young dancer performing with such confidence on a big international stage. I am sure that parents are all proud of their dancers and that everyone enjoyed the show and whole Disney experience.”

After a couple of days to wind down and enjoy the rest of the Disney parks, the dancers are home and ready to start their next challenges: a wholeschool show at Henley’s Kenton Theatre in October, and big performances to come at Wembley Stadium and the O2 in the Spring and Summer of 2016.

Welcome to COLOURFIRST’s initial feature in Look Local Magazine.

Preventing Tooth Decay in Children Caring for your children’s knashers from an early age will help them to grow up with healthy teeth and gums. In this month’s feature, Dr. Smitha Pillai from Stokenchurch Dental Care talks to us about how you, as a parent, can protect your child’s teeth from tooth decay through a healthy diet and regular check ups to the dentist.

Children’s teeth start to grow under the gums before birth. There are two sets, milk teeth and permanent teeth.

Children usually have 20 milk teeth.

They start to push through the gums (erupt) at about six months. However, this can vary from as young as four months to over 12 months with most children having a full set by the age of two or three. Your child’s milk teeth are important for eating, speaking and smiling as well as boosting their confidence and self-esteem. Permanent teeth usually start to erupt at the age of six and by adulthood one can have up to 32 teeth with most of them being present by 13.

However, wisdom teeth (at the very back of the mouth) usually won’t erupt until between the ages of 17 and 25 although not everyone gets these teeth. Over the years accidents may happen where 20

teeth get knocked out causing damage however two preventable causes of damage to children’s teeth are Tooth Decay and Dental Erosion.

What causes Tooth Decay?

Our mouths are full of bacteria that combine with small food particles and saliva to form a sticky film known as plaque. These bacteria digest some of the sugar in our food and drinks, making acids that weaken the tooth enamel (the hard outer layer of teeth). If the plaque is allowed to build up, the acid can begin to break down the outer surface of the tooth, which will eventually penetrate the soft part at the centre of the tooth causing toothache or infection.

How can I protect my child’s teeth from Tooth Decay?

The most common cause of tooth decay in children is down to them not cleaning their teeth properly, especially

Health & Wellbeing after they’ve consumed a sugary drink or food. Controlling your child’s diet is therefore the best way to keep tooth decay at bay. Keep squashes, fizzy drinks, natural fruit juices, sweets and cakes to a minimum, and never more than four times in a day. Don’t give your child sugary foods and drinks as snacks between meals or before bedtime.

Watch out for hidden sugars in sauces, breakfast cereals and other foods. Fruit, vegetables, cheese and milk are all healthier snacks because they contain only natural sugars. However, fruit does also contain acid, which can cause decay if eaten in large amounts. You c a n help to protect your child’s teeth against erosion by finishing a meal with an alkaline food such as milk or cheese, which will neutralise the acid in your child’s mouth.

A good diet combined with encouraging your child to brush their teeth twice a day and attending regular check-up appointments with your dentist will help to protect your child’s teeth. Children with healthy teeth are more likely to have healthy teeth as adults.

How to resolve conflict in a Family Business...

Often, it is not the situation but the perspective on the situation that causes anger. Once again, open and probing type questions to assist.

Rather than avoiding conflict in a family business, any differences should be brought to the surface in a friendly way and discussed objectively.

Third - Request solutions: After each has given their point of view in a fair but assertive way, the next step is to get each party to identify how the situation could be changed. Again, question each other politely to find ideas.

LOCAL SCOOTER CLUB RAISES £1,000 FOR DISABILITY FOOTBALL TEAM

The

Double Diamond Scooter Club, based in Princes Risborough, presented a cheque for £1,000 to Risborough Rangers Junior FC Pan-disability team at the recently-held Kop Hill Climb.

“At our annual Weekend Charity event we wanted to raise money for a local good cause and the recently formed RRJFC Disability Team of boys and girls was unanimously chosen by our members” said Chairman, Frank Smith.

The Scooter Club was formed in 2011 around a group of like-minded people with a passionate interest in vintage Lambretta and Vespa scooters. Their annual mini-festival, held in Towersey, is focused on raising money for good causes and provides a great atmosphere with on-site camping, music, food etc. The sum raised is a measure of the generosity of the scooter-world.

“This team of boys and girls aged 7-11 captured the imagination of our members and we are looking forward to our continued support throughout the year, in seeing the opportunity to play football being made available to as many children as possible who have hitherto not been involved in football because of a physical or learning disability” said Vice- Chairman, Darren Saunders.

On hand to accept the very generous cheque was Team Patron, Mike Bushell, the BBC Sports presenter together with team members and their families, team coaches and RRJFC Chairman, Andrew Quigley.

“We are very grateful to the Double Diamond Scooter Club for this magnificent sum that will benefit the Pan-disability team and its future development. With their agreement,

‘Pan-disability’ in footballing terms refers to individuals with different disabilities all participating together. Unfortunately it does not include those who are blind or in a wheelchair. It is those players who are not able, in the most part, to actively engage in able-bodied football.

The majority of participants may, for example, have learning difficulties, are on the autistic spectrum, may have some hearing or sight impairment, may have Downs or Tourette syndrome, dwarfism (restricted growth condition), may be an amputee with or without a prosthesis, as well as other impairments that impact on their sporting performance.
