Hello Readers,

Welcome to the February 2020 Edition of Look Local Magazine. How are your New Year’s Resolutions going? Did you take part in Dry January or Veganuary or have you opted for the popular “I will exercise more and shape up in time for summer!” If so, then give yourself a couple of nights off as we celebrate Valentine’s Day on 14th followed by Shrove Tuesday on the 25th this year, both of which are not occasions to be worrying about the waist line. We also gain a day this month as 2020 is a Leap Year Saturday 29th February? It’s always intrigued me as to why a Leap Year exists? Obviously we all know this event occurs every four year but why? So I did a little research and found out that Leap Years are any year that can be exactly divided by 4 (such as 2016, 2020 etc). Fun Fact: There is however an exception to this rule if the year date can also be exactly divided by 100, then it isn’t a Leap Year (such as 2100, 2200, etc) except if it can be exactly divided by 400, then it is (such as 2000, 2400). Head buzzing now? Mine is... Another thing I’ve always wondered about is those who were born on a 29th February - on non-leap years when do you celebrate your birthday? The day before or the day after? Perhaps any of my readers who were born on this date could let me know! Its also a very exciting time for me at Look Local Magazine as I will soon be partnering with local Digital Marketing Company, Harris Consultancy (www.harrisconsultancy.co.uk), which will allow us the opportunity to offer local businesses a full marketing support package encompassing Magazine & Online Advertising, Print & Design, Social Media and Website Builds & Support. So please do watch this space for further information, which we shall release very soon.

Health & Wellbeing

MEDITATION for Menopause

by Sophie Lacey

It is known that women in the West tend to have a harder time of menopause than women in

traditional cultures, particularly in the East, and this is now thought to be largely due to our levels of stress. Clinical evidence is therefore emerging that women who meditate regularly during menopause experience a reduction in symptoms such as mood swings, hot flushes, aches and insomnia; enabling them to regain a sense of control and balance, and in some cases cope for longer without needing HRT (although you must always see your GP if you think you need medical intervention).

Chronic stress affects our sex hormones because cortisol (a longterm stress hormone) supresses all non-vital functions, including the production and metabolism of hormones, to prioritise energy and tissue repair in stressful situations. Adrenaline is less toxic as it dissipates quickly after acute stress, although it can exacerbate hot flushes and feelings of panic. Cortisol elevates blood sugar which later turns to fat, holding excess hormones in the body. Over time, it stresses the liver and prevents it flushing out excess hormones, and it contributes to both cellular ageing and bone loss. Additionally, cortisol working against stress is not available for conversion to progesterone, while also blocking the production of oxytocin, the love and bonding hormone. An adrenal gland busily pumping out cortisol fails to produce DHEA, which converts to progesterone and then to oestrogen. This is especially important after the ovaries shut down, because the adrenal gland and the brain normally take over production. In our menopause circle you will be guided through a series of gentle meditations based on breathing, physical relaxation, and feminine symbols such as flowing water or the full moon. You will also have the chance to share experiences, pick up some lifestyle and meditation tips to use at home, and enjoy soothing teas and essential oils.

MENOPAUSE MEDITATION CIRCLE Day: Fridays, monthly at the Healing Room, The Space, Thame. Time: 7:45pm - 8:45pm. Cost: £10.00 per session, please book and pay upfront as spaces are limited. Next session: 28 February. For one-to-one lessons, workplace classes and details of upcoming Beginners’ Meditation Courses and events, please like/follow and message Linden Tree Meditation on Facebook. www.lindentreemeditation.com | Tel: 07982 756609

Knees and fitness... ‘Many operations could be unnecessary’ says leading surgeon

This was the headline of an article I wrote for Look Local a couple of years ago, and the situation hasn’t changed. In brief; there is a possibility that your Orthopaedic consultant will tell you that surgery isn’t the ideal option for treating Knee injuries. This may come as a surprise given that surgeons are trained to operate!

A

leading surgeon at Oxford University Hospital cast doubt on the efficacy of certain types of elective surgery, whereby the benefits could be partly, or entirely explained by patient’s expectations of symptomatic relief following (invasive) treatment. A placebo effect. He explored the usefulness of arthroscopic knee surgery, in the light of evidence that intervention is not always required or indeed useful. This has now been taken further and GP’s are recommended (NICE) not to offer opioid medication, scans, injections and surgical consultations as a first line treatment plan. NB: This does not include Red Flag scenarios such as trauma, cancer and neurovascular compromise. The conclusion being that of ‘watchful waiting’ to see if the knee gets better with conservative treatment. Treatment such a soft tissue therapy – Bowen!

The result, not entirely surprising to me, was an injection to help relieve the inflammation and thereby reducing the pain, with absolutely no indication for either an arthroscopic ‘look and see’ or indeed a knee replacement. The consultant was insistent that sport was resumed, along with specific exercises and a follow up in a few months to review. I was happy with this result and was able to continue with Bowen treatments, exercise advice and my Bowen therapy remedies using Apple Cider Vinegar compresses and Epsom Salt baths or Magnesium oil spray. So far all has improved.

So how can Bowen help you? Early treatment, using myofascial release techniques, is recommended following any injury, to help relieve pain, which will allow a greater range of movement. The careful and precise moves, which stimulate muscles, nerves and soft tissue, prompt the body to rest imbalances and start the healing process. Since this OUH study, which was undertaken several years ago, you will find your GP increasingly keen to encourage ‘Watchful Waiting’. This can be frustrating for patients so in the meantime help may be sort with Bowen Treatments. Bowen is suitable for all…. those with sporting injuries and for those with long term aches and pains. Please note that I will not diagnose or suggest avoidance of surgery, as a therapist I work with your medical advisors to achieve the best possible outcome for your health and wellbeing. For further information, contact:

Jen Webster Bowen, Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com T: 07768 188664

Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

In recent weeks I have seen several clients with knee issues. One was particularly frustrated with a very painful and swollen knee, resulting in an inability to play competitive tennis. His main concern, once overriding the pain, was that he may be doing more damage. I encouraged an appointment with the GP and recommended a specialist knee surgeon for a consultation. It’s very important for my clients to understand what is going on in their bodies, to have a clear idea of expectations and the confidence for forward planning.

THE EFFECT OF SCARS on the body and mind...

Andy Roscoe, Acupuncturist and Director at Thame Therapy Clinic, discusses the impact of scars on our lives and their treatment with Acupuncture:Scars are common place – most adults will have some experience of scars arising from accidents or surgical incision. A scar represents a normal stage in the healing process after healthy tissue has been traumatised. However sometimes this healing process gets stuck and scars feel like a barrier or discomfort with side effects in other parts of the body and a loss of energy in various organ systems, or even a loss of self. Scars may be external, internal or emotional. Sometimes external scars may appear to be closed and smooth on the surface but deep down they are blocking energy. Some scars can’t be seen and come from old trauma following surgery. These internal scars continue to work against the free flow of energy. Scars attached to key events in our lives may also become emotional scars and block the full expression of ourselves. In Acupuncture theory all these kinds of scars are considered to be toxic and to impede the flow of energy and blood between the body and mind. Sometimes it is obvious that something is wrong if a scar is raised and inflamed on the skin. But as said above, many scars are internal and this blocking can go on for many years. Acupuncture can be used to determine which external scars are still active or toxic and to release the toxic blocks. Acupuncture can also be used to find and heal internal wounds whether physical or emotional.

Editorial Feature

EASE THE STRESS by learning to manage conflict

Mediation is a form of conflict resolution that delivers results fairly, effectively and in a low-cost and time-efficient way. In this article, Emma Jenkings, qualified Workplace & Employment Mediator and founder of Mosaic Mediation, highlights the stresses that coincide with the month of February and how mediation can help individuals resolve certain issues, in confidence and without prejudice, before they become to problematic. In January it seems that most conversations include the phrase, ‘It’s just nice to get back to normal after the Christmas break”. January is when we all get back to routine – work, housework, education, appointments, etc. February can be when reality truly hits some people. At the end of January, their credit card statements came through showing the true financial cost of Christmas festivities, and now they have to figure out how they’re going to pay it off. Any relationship breakdown that happened over the festive season, is now sinking in. The weather is colder and Valentine’s Day is approaching (enjoyable for some, but not for all)! As a mediator, my role is to be ‘neutral’ but I still want to understand each person - why they may think or behave in a certain way - so I ask questions and spend most of the beginning of the session simply listening. Eventually people start to open up, and what strikes me every time is how much ‘home-stress’ and ‘work-stress’ overlap. In EVERY mediation, stress from home – finances, relationships, physical or mental health – has an effect on their interactions at work. And, in EVERY mediation, stress at work has clearly had a significant impact on their personal life. (I can’t count the number of times I have heard about how stress or conflict at work has led to some form of relationship breakdown at home and/or serious sleep disruption.) Conflict can take many forms: aggressive/irritable behaviour, withdrawing from social interactions, avoiding certain people, excluding individuals from activities/conversations, or face-to-face disagreements. Whichever form it takes, ALL conflict has an effect on people. So, what can be done? Here are 4 suggestions for maintaining peaceful and positive work and personal relationships: 1.

Be aware - that your friends and family, staff members and colleagues, may have extra burdens on their mind. These worries may result in heightened emotions, behaving less ‘reasonably’, and feeling overwhelmed by minor tasks or interactions.

2.

Be self-aware – by recognising that any worries that are on your mind, may impact your own behaviour, reactions and thought processes.

3.

Be gracious – with yourself and others. When you are under-pressure or tired it is really challenging to give people the benefit of the doubt, but understand that not doing so could result in unnecessary conflict. Being gracious to yourself gives you the mental capacity to figure out the root cause of a change in your behaviour, reactions or thought processes, so that you can deal with them.

4.

Be hopeful – when relationships experience tension and strife. Conflict in some relationships can be extraordinarily difficult to work through. However, in my experience, resolution is possible in most relationships as long as you put the (above) three points into practice AND both of you remain hopeful.

The must have kitchen feature – island unit inspiration...

itchens are no longer just a functional room for preparing meals, they’re social spaces, which have grown in size and become the focal point of homes. With this change in function, island units have become a musthave feature, even in smaller spaces. If you’re updating your kitchen and need some island inspiration, here are three of the best natural stone designs we’ve seen and worked on. A Quartzite Centrepiece – Quartzite is a natural stone slowly gaining popularity as a kitchen surface. It’s typically compared to marble due to its silky smooth, glassy texture, however quartzite is a much harder material than marble. It’s less susceptible to wear and tear including scratches and stains, and unlike marble, which needs regularly re-sealing, quartzite is less porous so its seal will remain intact much longer. Quartzite’s are beautiful stones with colourings that include oranges, greens and greys. When paired with a simpler worktop, a quartzite island makes a stunning focal point. Tiles & Marble – Tiles are topping the trend charts in all areas of the home – pops of colour in our fireplaces, our splashbacks, on the floor and in bathrooms. Pair a natural stone island top with clashing tiled edge, or create real drama with black marble paired with black tiles.

a

Upcycled Islands – In an era of eco-consciousness, recycling and reusing furniture or units found on online second-hand sites can be a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, whilst also saving you money. Spice up a second hand or salvaged table with a new, natural stone island top for a mixed material, ultra cozy, rustic look. For more information on how to get started updating your kitchen email Coulon Stone on info@coulonstone.com, call us on 01494 484333 or visit our showroom in Stokenchurch.
