WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT Thank you for supporting Longy’s Virtual Gala Celebration “Seen/Unseen.” I am delighted that you have joined us for this behind-the-scenes journey of Longy’s immersive performances and innovative curriculum. Get ready for an exclusive look at the work that Longy is uniquely charged to do. It takes passion for our entire community to unlock our students’ potential to be fearless agents of change— to be the music makers, educators, and healing artists the world needs them to be. The events of this past year have been a crucial reminder of both the importance of human connection, and of the work that must continue to create a more equitable world. It is fitting that tonight we honor one of our great music makers and educators, Ellis Marsalis (1934–2020) with the Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society. I am so grateful to Jamie Bernstein, Wynton Marsalis, and Ellis Marsalis III who will participate in an opening event for the Gala to reflect on the legacies of their fathers and their impact on music. This celebration benefits our Access for Equity Campaign, making it possible for Longy to invest in students from all backgrounds, to break barriers, grow as musicians, and create careers. Join me for this storytelling and musical journey to see how Longy prepares and empowers students to make a difference in the world. Karen Zorn, President Longy School of Music of Bard College

THANK YOU FROM OUR CO-CHAIRS Thank you for your generous support to the Access for Equity Campaign and Gala Celebration Thank you for joining us for Longy’s 2021 Virtual Gala Celebration! This year, funds raised through the Gala will support the Access for Equity Campaign. We are delighted to report that as of March 12, 2021, we have raised over $226,000, which is 84% toward our $270,000 goal. With these funds we will: • Provide Equity Scholarships for students with the deepest financial need. Longy already provides 97% of its students with financial aid. Equity Scholarships will remove the barrier determining whether a deserving student attends Longy at all. • Underwrite a School-wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion process to propel Longy forward in creating a sustainable, equitable conservatory. • Launch a Fellowship program that offers generous scholarship support and professional experience with Longy’s Artistic and Social Change team. • Continue building Longy’s signature social change programming such as Sistema Side-by-Side, providing school children with high quality music education, and the Music as a Healing Art Initiative, training students to serve the most vulnerable in our community. Please consider making a Fund a Need gift during the Gala Celebration to ensure we reach our Access to Equity Campaign goal. Thank you for your generous support. Bronwyn Lamont Rob Straus Co-Chairs, Access for Equity Campaign and Gala Celebration
TONIGHT WE HONOR
ELLIS MARSALIS, JR. with the Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society.
ELLIS MARSALIS, JR. (1934-2020)
The father of six sons, Ellis Marsalis’ main importance to jazz may very well have been as a jazz educator; his former pupils (in addition to his sons) included Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, Harry Connick, Jr., Nicholas Payton, and Kent and Marlon Jordan, among others. Born in New Orleans in 1934, he started out as a tenor saxophonist, switching to piano while in high school. Marsalis was one of the few New Orleans musicians of the era who did not specialize in Dixieland or rhythm & blues. He played with fellow modernists (including Ed Blackwell) in the late ‘50s with AFO, recorded with Cannonball and Nat Adderley in the ‘60s, played with Al Hirt (1967-1970), and was busy as a teacher. Marsalis freelanced in New Orleans during the ‘70s and taught at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. An active performer, Marsalis toured often and was a frequent guest at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Ellis Marsalis died in New Orleans on April 1, 2020; he was 85 years old.
The Gala Celebration will be preceded by an exclusive Bernstein Award Reception at 7pm, featuring a discussion with Longy’s special guests: JAMIE BERNSTEIN
Jamie Bernstein is an author, narrator, and filmmaker who has transformed a lifetime of loving music into a career of sharing her knowledge and excitement with others. Her father, composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein, and her mother, pianist and actress Felicia Montealegre, created an ebullient atmosphere that turned Jamie into a lifelong cultural enthusiast.
WYNTON MARSALIS
Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, and bandleader, an educator, and a leading advocate of American culture. He has created and performed an expansive range of music from quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to symphony orchestras and tap dance to ballet, expanding the vocabulary for jazz and classical music with a vital body of work that places him among the world’s finest musicians and composers.
ELLIS L. MARSALIS III
Ellis Marsalis III, a Louisiana native, is a photographer and poet who has made Baltimore City home for more than twenty-five years. A graduate of New York University with a degree in photography, he has exhibited his work in the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, The African-American Museum in Philadelphia and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African-American History & Culture in Baltimore.

TEXTS SYMPATHIQUE Ma chambre a la forme d’une cage Le soleil passe son bras par la fenêtre Les chasseurs à ma porte Comme les p’tits soldats Qui veulent me prendre
My room is a form of a cage The sunstreams through the window The bellhops are at my door like those little soldiers who want to take me away
Je ne veux pas travailler Je ne veux pas déjeuner Je veux seulement l’oublier Et puis je fume
I don’t want to work I don’t want to lunch I only want to forget and so I smoke
Déjà j’ai connu le parfum de l’amour Un million de roses n’embaumerait pas autant Maintenant une seule fleur dans mes entourages Me rend malade!
Long ago I knew the smell of love A million roses didn’t smell as sweet Now a single flower in my way makes me sick!
Je ne veux pas travailler Je ne veux pas déjeuner Je veux seulement l’oublier Et puis je fume
I don’t want to work I don’t want to lunch I only want to forget and so I smoke
Je ne suis pas fière de ça Vie qui veut me tuer C’est magnifique être sympathique Mais je ne le connais jamais
I am not proud of this life that wants to kill me It’s magnificent to be nice but I have never known this
Je ne veux pas travailler Je ne veux pas déjeuner Je veux seulement l’oublier Et puis je fume
I don’t want to work I don’t want to lunch I only want to forget and so I smoke

I don’t know what’s in the flowers, weeping woman The flowers from the cemetery
Que cuando las mueve el viento llorona Parece que están llorando Que cuando las mueve el viento llorona Parece que están llorando
When they are moved by the wind, weeping woman they seem to be crying
Ay de mi llorona, llorona, llorona tú eres mi chuca Ay de mi llorona, llorona, llorona tú eres mi chuca
Alas! weeping woman, weeping woman Weeping woman you are my sweetheart
Me quitarán de quererte llorona Pero de olvidarte nunca Me quitarán de quererte llorona Pero de olvidarte nunca
They’ll stop me from loving you, weeping woman But never I’ll forget you
Si porque te quiero, quieres llorona, quieres que te quiera más Si porque te quiero, quieres llorona, quieres que te quiera más
If because I love you, you want, weeping woman you want me to love you more
Si ya te he dado la vida llorona, ¿qué más quieres?, ¿quieres más? Si ya te he dado la vida llorona, ¿qué más quieres?, ¿quieres más?
If I have already given my life to you, weeping woman What more do you want? You want more?

Artistic and Social Change Fellowships We will offer five service-oriented fellowships that will help students develop skills to support their career goals, while providing them with necessary scholarship funds. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: The Next Level We are investing in a yearlong School-wide process, supported by experts in the field, to build on our past efforts and pave a path forward in equitable conservatory education. Social Change Programs Students build strong partnerships, sharing their talents with vulnerable and under-resourced communities through Sistema Side-by-Side and Music as a Healing Art. Equity Scholarships Goal: $50,000 (5) scholarships Raised: $40,000
At Longy we believe our students’ potential counts. Whether they found music at age 2 or 22, there’s a place for them at Longy. All lived experiences and skills are welcome here—a conservatory where all kinds of musicians succeed. Longy invests in musicians who will make a difference in the world by removing barriers to their conservatory education. For example, when we award scholarships, we look at the breadth of the student’s potential both artistically and personally. In 2020, Longy increased its financial aid from $4.8M to $5.4M. Even with very generous financial aid packages, some students need to have 100% of their tuition covered to make their conservatory education possible . You can make access for equity real with your contribution of $10,000 for a named Equity Scholarship. Help us close the gap between a student’s dream and achievement. Equity Scholarships will be awarded in Spring 2021 and announced in Fall 2021. $10,000 Named Equity Scholarship $5,000 Co-Named Equity Scholarship
Equity Scholarship Profile
SANTIAGO BARRAGAN Santiago Barragan Noguera is a musician, writer, dancer, and content creator—and Longy’s first Equity Scholarship recipient.
“I feel extremely grateful for the Equity Scholarship that Longy gave me. Many of my talented, passionate peers in Columbia cannot access their dream, because of what it costs. I am confident that this experience will shape me into a stronger musician, an effective educator, and ultimately a better human being. Think of the difference we can make, if more musicians are blessed with this opportunity!”
By pursuing a career in music and education, he wants to solve exciting puzzles around learning process, lifestyle design, productivity, and wellness. His goal is to craft learning systems that facilitate the acquisition of new skills and knowledge—and to promote public understanding of the arts and the monumental role artists have as agents of change. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Santi moved to France at age 18 to study with different teachers of the Conservatory of Nancy. After receiving a diploma with a special mention, he was awarded a scholarship to continue studies at Berklee College of Music, in Guitar Performance and Jazz composition. As an undergraduate, he was awarded scholarships from the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation for four consecutive years. Santi is now continuing his education at Longy School of Music of Bard College, with a Masters of Music in Jazz & Contemporary Music and guitar studies. _______________________ Read the inspiring story of Arson Fahim, a Longy-bound Equity Scholarship pianist, in the BBC News. Arson’s journey from an orphanage for Afghan refugee children in Pakistan to his discovery of piano through the magic of cinema led him to pursue music passionately, even during Taliban rule in Kabul. He gained international fame for his composition to honor journalists who lost their lives to violence and now hopes to travel to the United States to enroll in Longy this fall.
Longy’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Work Goes to the Next Level: A Year of Reflection, Planning, and Actualization
Goal: $120,000 Raised: $120,000
At Longy, we know music has the power to incite change. All Longy stakeholders are invested in a yearlong Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) process to pave a path forward in equitable conservatory education. Supported by experts in the field, Longy will engage in faculty, staff, and board development to achieve the following outcomes. •
Ensure employees have the skills and resources to foster a School culture that honors all students’ lived experiences.
•
Root out and remove barriers in recruitment and retention of students and faculty of color underrepresented in classical music.
•
Continually examine and expand repertoire studied and performed, with emphasis on inclusion of composers and artists of color, women, and queer individuals.
•
Invest in power-shifting among Longy’s leadership and staff to reflect our increasingly diverse student body, as well as the communities that we serve through our social change programs.
With your help, Longy will advance the conservatory model and the classical music canon. In doing so, we—all of us—will thrive.
Artistic and Social Change Fellowships Goal: $50,000 (5) scholarships Raised: $30,000
At Longy, we prepare musicians to make waves. We find students who are passionate about social change and give them the tools they need to impact communities and change lives. This newly launched fellowship program will help students explore and amplify their aspirations through professional experience in artistic planning/production and social change program planning and administration. Given the breadth of the School’s artistic and social change programming, students will gain firsthand knowledge and critical skills to create meaningful change through music. Fellows will be mentored by socially engaged musicians from Longy’s extended family to provide guidance from their own experience. We have seen our alumni at work and know the power of their impact. Help us show the next generation of students how much their music matters. Donors have the opportunity to sponsor or co-sponsor a fellowship, which will be awarded in Spring 2021 and announced in Fall 2021. $10,000 Named Artistic and Social Change Fellowship $5,000 Co-Named Artistic and Social Change Fellowship
Message from Assistant Dean of Artistic and Social Change
IAN SAUNDERS Talent is universal; access to nurture that talent is not. This is what drives my work as Longy’s Assistant Dean of Artistic and Social Change. The School’s belief in the transformational power of music to make a difference in the world is real, and the Artistic and Social Change Fellowships offer yet another innovative learning opportunity for our students. At this conservatory, our students can realize their potential while advancing meaningful change in the world as citizen musicians and leaders. The portfolio that I oversee at Longy gets right to the heart of the reckoning that must happen in classical music. I know that the professional experience our students will have with these Fellowships will support their growth as humans and artists ready to serve with their music and make a meaningful difference in their communities.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROGRAMS Goal: $50,000 Raised: $36,000
Sistema Side-by-Side This year-round program pairs children ages 6-18 from El Sistemainspired music education sites across Massachusetts with Longy conservatory students for rehearsals and extraordinary performances. Through this innovative program, Longy is enriching the lives of children, preparing conservatory students to build meaningful lives in music, and addressing a pressing need for high-quality music education for young musicians who may not otherwise have access. Your gift to Sistema Side-by-Side will have an impact: $5,000 Co-sponsor a Longy Teaching Assistant Sponsor a faculty teaching artist for Side-by-Side and the El Sistema Summer Academy $2,500 Fund the cost for one child to participate in the year-long Sistema Side-by-Side program $1,000 Fund two full scholarships for children with financial need to participate in two weeks of musical immersion and inspiration at Longy’s El Sistema Summer Academy $500 Fund a full scholarship for El Sistema Summer Academy Sponsor the Summer Academy Young Mentor Program, where youth leaders are compensated for mentoring younger children in the Summer Academy
Impact Statement Longy’s El Sistema-inspired Side-by-Side Program values each child. The music they share—and who they are becoming—makes our communities better.
“Leila made great strides through the music program. Before she started, she was having some issues with school. She was an average child with C’s and B’s, and she was having difficulty reading. Then, she was introduced to the violin through the Kids 4 Harmony music program. “Music helped Leila with education. She initially was an average student, struggling with reading and verbal skills. Once she got involved with music, her grades shot up. I don’t know if it was the note reading or music reading but she was reading better. Since starting the violin she’s had straight A’s. She’s now a high honors student. “I think every opportunity they give her pushes her to be better because she starts feeling more comfortable with herself. She tries to push to see what else she can do—she’s always looking for the next step.”
—Parent of Leila, violin
Music as a Healing Art For many, music is a calling. Musicians can relieve suffering, bring comfort, and give respite. We train our students so that they can use their talents to make a difference in the world by helping those in need. Our class, Music as a Healing Art, explores the human response to music and its therapeutic capabilities. Longy’s Certified Music Practitioner® program, in conjunction with Music for Healing and Transition Program, Inc.™ (MHTP), prepares musicians for the art and science of live therapeutic music—for individuals in hospital, hospice, and other healthcare settings. Your gift toward Music as a Healing Art will have an impact: $5,000 Sponsor a year-long residency at a partner site $3,800 Provide a full Scholarship for Certified Music Practitioner® Certification $2,000 Provide a partial Scholarship for Certified Music Practitioner® Certification $1,000 Underwrite one module for one student at Longy and MHTP summer institute leading to Certified Music Practitioner® Certification $500 Keyboard for use in partner sites that lack piano on site
Impact Statement When Job Salazar Fonseca was a student at Longy, his son, Aksel, was born prematurely and had to spend his first weeks of life in the NICU. The medical team was doing a great job, but the baby was struggling to eat and breathe on his own. Job and his wife hoped and prayed that Aksel would progress quickly, while thinking of other ways to help. Although the nursing staff was initially hesitant, Job was able to utilize his training as a Certified Music Practitioner® to enter the nursery and play his violin at Aksel’s bedside.
“Bringing my violin and providing live therapeutic music to Aksel at the hospital every day was a blessing. It helped him learn to eat on his own better, to breathe on his own more consistently, to remind him that he is alive and loved by his father and mother, and eventually to leave the hospital and come home with us. “Now, not only is my son thriving, but I am able to finish my education at Longy because of generous scholarship support—a miracle I was not expecting. “The training I’ve received here has already equipped me with the skills to make a difference in this world.”

UPCOMING EVENTS horszowski trio / when the seen meets the unseen Friday / 3.26.2021 Synesthesia: Where some see red, others hear it. That’s synesthesia, the cross wiring of the senses—for Klee painting in the style of Bach, or Sibelius making a musical mosaic, or Fauré fathering musical impressionism, the result is the color of sound, the unseen made visible.
musicians from marlboro / in my nightly thoughts Sunday / 3.28.2021 Night is the dark of the day’s ending, the sweetness of forgetting, the dream of awakening to light. Performing the music of Brahms, Handel, Soper, and Schubert, the Musicians from Marlboro evoke all the hues of loss and longing, fear, and wonder the night holds.
neave trio / youth and experience Saturday / 4.3.2021 It’s not so much the world that changes over time as the way we see it, in a transformation charted in these age-spanning works presented by Neave Trio (featuring works by Rachmaninoff, Ravel, and Brahms).
faculty artist recital / the stories we carry with us Friday / 4.9.2021 Katherine Pukinskis, composer Dreams set responsibilities in motion, and the same can be said of music, at least for new Longy faculty member Katherine Pukinskis, whose work opens a world and beckons the listener in.

MASTER THE ART OF TEACHING Longy announces the Fall 2021 launch of a fully online Master of Music in Music Education degree program (MM/ME) designed especially for educators who seek an advanced degree without taking time off from their careers. This degree program, which can be completed in one or two years, builds on Longy’s near-decade of expertise in preparing musicians to be teachers through its campus-based degree programs, including the one-year MM/ME degree offered in Cambridge, MA. The MM/ME is uniquely designed to integrate practices of social change in the music classroom. Graduates of this program will be prepared to amplify the voices of students from all backgrounds, create and make music from diverse cultures, and approach music teaching from a holistic and equity-based perspective.

ABOUT LONGY Founded in 1915, by Georges Longy, principal oboist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the School is now an internationally recognized leader that constantly rethinks conservatory education and expands the world’s understanding of what a life in music can mean. Longy prepares its students to become fearless music makers, educators who teach music like the world depends on it, and compassionate healing artists. Potential counts We invest in musicians who will make a difference in the world. Whether they found music at age 2 or 22. Here, all lived experiences and skills are welcome and all kinds of musicians succeed. Music matters Whether our students are passionate about music or social change – or both – Longy is the place where they can turn their enthusiasm into action. We help them explore, define and amplify their talent and discover new ways to change lives and impact communities through music. Belong Our students are a part of our community of musicians who root for each other and cheer on each other’s successes. At Longy, “collaborative” describes not only our performances, but the way we live and learn together.
WE SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS They study what’s important to them There’s no one way to be a musician. At Longy, our students uncover and explore new ways to make a living in music. Our innovative Catalyst Curriculum is customized to focus on the skills, knowledge and experience they need to create change in the world. They can start their career now From their first days at Longy they become a Boston musician, performing professionally with our faculty and artistic partners around the city. Out students get hands‐on, real‐world experience while they build their network with an extensive community of musicians and organizations.
Proud Sponsor of Longy’s 2021 Virtual Gala Concert
We applaud your commitment to investing in exceptional musicians who make a difference in their communities and around the world.
