A Longwood Christmas On View November 19, 2021–January 9, 2022 This holiday season, wrap yourself up in the warmth—and the chill— of A Longwood Christmas as we showcase the dramatically beautiful contrast of fire and ice. Inside, set your spirits ablaze with towering trees adorned in amber to fiery red tones, flickering flame lanterns, and an inviting mountain retreat, complemented by icy-hued plantings, a “frozen” succulent fountain, and a refreshing alpine waterway. Outdoors, cozy up to inviting fire pits, cool off with a stroll through half-amillion lights that dazzle and delight, and relish in the splendor of the season. This Christmas, opposites attract.

Members may visit anytime, but require free, timed Member reservations every day during A Longwood Christmas from open to close. Member reservations should be made in advance as sell out is likely. Gardens Premium Members and those included in their Membership, as well as Innovators, do not require timed reservations.
Buy Before You Arrive · Timed Tickets Required · Tickets Limited Admission to A Longwood Christmas is by Timed Admission Ticket only with tickets issued for a specific date and time. Guests not included in a Membership require a Timed Admission Ticket. We cannot accommodate a Member’s request for tickets if we are sold out. Purchase in advance as tickets sell out.
With a timed Member reservation, you may enter the Gardens as early as 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after your entry time (except for 10 am ticketholders). Later or earlier arrivals cannot be accommodated. You may stay as long as you wish once you enter the Gardens. Once you leave the Gardens, there is no re-entry, so please make sure you have everything you need before you enter.
Bringing a Guest? Complimentary Guest Tickets are not valid on blackout dates during A Longwood Christmas. Blackout days are all Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during A Longwood Christmas through January 2, 2022 and every day December 24, 2021 through January 2, 2022. Don’t Be Left Out in the Cold
Visiting Tips for A Longwood Christmas Buy or Reserve Before You Arrive. Free timed Member reservations are required every day during A Longwood Christmas. Plan ahead and make your Member reservations in advance. Print your Member reservations and tickets at home and show them upon entry, or go paperless and open them on your smartphone prior to entering the Visitor Center. Keep Timing in Mind. Reserve an early arrival time and you’ll miss the evening rush of traffic and still have time to explore all the Brandywine Valley has to offer after your visit to the Gardens. Keep in mind, traffic may become heavy approaching Longwood Gardens between 2 and 8 pm. Be Prepared to Park in Our Main or Remote Lot. Parking is free and our remote lot will be used. Transportation is provided from remote parking areas. Accessible parking with your permit is available in the main lot. Be Sure You Have All You Need. Once you enter the Gardens, you may stay as long as you wish. Once you leave the Gardens, there is no re-entry, so please make sure you have everything you need before you enter. Know When to Use Complimentary Tickets. Many Complimentary Admission Tickets, including Member’s Complimentary Guest Tickets, are not valid on blackout dates during A Longwood Christmas. Check your tickets as restrictions apply. Get Around the Gardens. Shuttle service is not provided. Scooters, wheelchairs, and strollers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. You are welcome to bring your own mobility device. Electric scooters are not available during inclement weather.
Please Observe Our One-Way Route in the Conservatory, as it May be Busy. Our Conservatory features a one-way walking route throughout, beginning and ending in our East Conservatory. Experience Our Lights and Fountains. Our outdoor lights and fire pits begin to come on at 12 pm daily. Our Open Air Theatre fountain shows run daily at 10:15 am and then every five minutes starting at 12 pm, while our 15-minute Main Fountain Garden light display runs daily from 4–11 pm, with a five-minute break between each show (weather permitting). Bundle Up! A Longwood Christmas is both indoors and outdoors. Dine With Us. The Café, 1906, Beer Garden (weather permitting) and concessions are all available for you. Holiday Performances The Olde Towne Carolers will be strolling the outdoor gardens, while Rob Dickenson and the Brandywine Christmas Minstrels and Galena Brass will be performing outside of the Peirce-du Pont House on select dates as marked on the calendar throughout A Longwood Christmas. Enjoy harmonized holiday classics while exploring our dazzling outdoor display. Please note: Organ Sing-Alongs and choral performances will not take place this year.
Highlights From Our Gardens Fire, Ice, and Everything Nice This season we’re heating things up and cooling them down as we showcase the dramatically beautiful contrast of fire and ice, complete with a huge helping of A Longwood Christmas magic. Revel in big, bold reds to frosty cool tones as you explore our grand Conservatory. Along the way find a festive fireside fete to a frozen alpine stream … and everything in between. From the moment you step into our East Conservatory, the striking juxtaposition of fire and ice will be on full, beautiful display. Make your way through the East Entry adorned with garlands and wreaths of pure white to intense red before heading left along our one-way Conservatory route, leading you through the fire-themed East Conservatory. Stroll along the Oval Basin, all the while drawing closer to the towering 22-foot East Tree, dressed with flickering flame lanterns and centered on the Patio of Oranges. Embraced by a heap of meticulously wrapped presents around
its base, the East Tree is perfectly complemented by the nearby Patio of Oranges parterres, continuing the fiery theme with water jets lit in hues of red, yellow, and orange. From there, make your way to our Orangery and its luscious red poinsettia-adorned trees. Walk underneath a refreshing birch tree allée along our Center Walk, anchored by four 18-foot trees decorated in breathtaking tones of white, crystal, and silver. Bundle up as you enter the Silver Garden, home to a “frozen” succulent fountain filled with blue, gray, and white succulents to Spanish-moss to a whole lot of wow. Cool white lights beckon in our Acacia Passage, lined with spiral juniper topiaries and white kalanchoe, leading you back to the Orangery. From here you’ll undoubtedly feel an icy chill as you enter our Exhibition Hall, transformed into a snow-covered alpine wonderland. Here, running the length of the Fern Floor is a magical flowing waterway amid an intricately carved, ice-inspired design, delicately flocked trees, a
cascading waterfall, and suspended icicle lights gleaming above. A 21-foot flocked Fraser fir, complete with an icy garland and silver bay laurel stuns on our Exhibition Hall Stage, beautifully reflecting the winter scene. Too cold for you? Warm back up with a walk through a festive family fete in our Music Room, where an inviting upscale mountain retreat awaits. Deep hues of red, gold, and copper are perfectly complemented by twinkling lights, towering birch arrangements, lovingly decorated trees, and a playful fireside garland. A suspended arrangement floats above an elegantly dressed table, while trees draped in cool white lights glisten on the patio just outside. From the Music Room, continue back towards our Patio of Oranges and make your way into the Ballroom, where an 18-foot Fraser fir sets the scene with a fiery combination of ornaments at its bottom and core, transitioning to icy adornments on the upper and outer edges of the tree. Making its new-location debut in the Ballroom is our beloved display of children’s Christmas trees. These 12-foot trees showcase hundreds of ice-inspired creations made by
local schools and organizations, playfully offset with an assortment of fire-inspired Longwood ornaments. As you exit the Ballroom and continue through the East Conservatory, head towards the Green Wall area, where you’re greeted by Fraser and concolor firs draped in hues of amber to copper to champagne, cooled down by hints of Tillandsia to blue juniper—not to mention our always-changing, always-beautiful pop-up Orchid Display—before you head back outside through our East Conservatory exit. Indoor wonderment continues in our Peirce-du Pont House, where hues of emerald, gold, and pastel pink positively shimmer. In the Peirce-du Pont House Conservatory, an elegantly dressed Fraser fir boasts a large garland of dried plant material, as well as gilded leaves to textural pampas grass. Gilded bonsai forms, white branches, and preserved hydrangea continue the dried floral theme in the Peirce-du Pont House Library, while the Heritage Exhibit rooms feature faux fireside displays and beautifully festive trees.
Hot on the (Holiday Lights) Trail This year’s A Longwood Christmas fire and ice theme can be found not only inside our Conservatory and Peirce-du Pont House, but also throughout our expansive outdoor gardens with wide-open spaces and imaginative vistas. Before you even enter our Gardens, our Visitor Center welcomes you with its ombre and flocked Christmas trees to glistening crystal ornaments to delicate snowflakes. As you make your way into the Gardens, undulating forms mimicking the motion of wind and snow, expertly crafted of grasses and botanicals, whisk you along into a world of a half-million lights. Flower Garden Drive evokes a wintery feel with its cool white to electric blue forms overhead, leading you all the while to a towering ash tree in the distance, wrapped in strand upon strand of red, orange, and yellow lights. Along the way, the Wildlife Tree and its edible dressings of suet to wheat nourish not only the wildlife, but the soul. At the Small Lake, flame spheres hang in the backdrop, creating a fiery reflection on the water. The Large Lake features an organic form of floating luminaria, rippling with subtle movement and beautifully illuminating not only the lake, but your own imagination of what lies beneath. The Canopy Cathedral Treehouse also looks on, with its bunches of red painted
curly willow, burnt branches, and brass geometric wreaths. Look up at the snowflake forms tickling the trees near the Italian Water Garden and then look down at the beautifully illuminated tree roots along the Meadow Boardwalk. Then, look every which way as you find yourself surrounded by light as you journey through our 200-foot-long Meadow Tunnel, featuring a slightly curved line that creates the impression that the lights continue on without an end in sight. Lollipop orbs and lit trees welcome you to the Lookout Loft Treehouse and its chilly theme of icy vines and frosted branches and pinecones. Nearby, our Gardener’s Tree—in its new location at the Peirce-du Pont House Plaza— features snowball-inspired ornaments, icicles, and eucalyptus accents to complement its silvery blue foliage. The fun continues at the Birdhouse Treehouse with its driftwood tree and fire-colored garland woven throughout the treehouse, as well as the whimsical Garden Railway outfitted in blue and silver plantings, a new water feature, and our dozens of locomotives and engines rumbling along nearly 500 feet of track. Make your way towards our Main Fountain Garden, where lights with shimmering, flowing, and bubbling effects dance along to holiday music.
Winter Wonder On View January 22–March 27, 2022
This winter, experience a warm, colorful oasis in our grand Conservatory. Vibrant Streptocarpus ‘Concord Blue’ baskets float above, pink and purple Saintpaulia (Africanviolets) delight, and tall Clerodendrum schmidtii (chains-of-glory) stun. From Cymbidium to highlights from our vast collection, find hundreds of orchids in bloom. Outside, stroll 400 acres of winter’s stark beauty. Although subdued colors reign, the occasional burst of bright yellow and orange of blooming witch-hazel dot the landscape, while winter grasses add a serene, textural element. Winter at Longwood … the best of both worlds.
