ABOUT THE EVENT Cupcakes & Cocktails is the most important fundraising activity undertaken by Long Island Children’s Museum annually. The event is recognized as a unique undertaking – bringing the Museum’s high energy, creativity and play-based focus to life for our supporters. The goal has always been for grown-ups to experience the magic and wonder that children enjoy at LICM every day. While circumstances dictated that the event go virtual this year, Museum trustees and staff dedicated their efforts to ensuring that LICM’s spirit would be front and center for all to enjoy. At LICM we look for the positive in every situation, and 2020 certainly challenged this mindset. But we found it for Cupcakes. Going virtual allowed us to create a more inclusive event, as families and schoolchildren are invited to attend this traditionally “grown-up” event. We’ve invited the community to share in the performances and activities and hear directly from the children, families and schools we serve. We are grateful for all our supporters who have helped us navigate a financially challenging year. They’ve had our back, just like we’ve had the backs of all our community’s children.
honoree profile: Lisa and Lewis Warren Great Friend to Kids Award Spotlights the contributions of community champions who are enhancing the lives of children through education, health, and community building. Early in their marriage Lisa and Lewis Warren had a big talk during an evening walk that set them on the path as Great Friends to Kids. The pair discussed who and how they would help their community. The answers came quickly and unanimously – children and educational causes would be the focus of their volunteer and philanthropic efforts. In the nearly 30 years since, that decision has transformed the lives of thousands, provided leadership to myriad community organizations, and is shaping the regional landscape to be more inclusive and accessible for generations of children. Lisa Warren has devoted decades to service and leadership to community, philanthropic, non-profit, and professional organizations; shaping the lives of children and the community that supports them. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees at the Portledge School. She supported her children’s (Arielle and Marshall) academic and sporting endeavors, including leadership roles at the Green Vale School, Hotchkiss, Boston University, and Middlebury College. Additionally, she served as Chair of the North Jersey Avalanche U16 Hockey Team’s annual fundraiser, chaired the Jr. Figure Skating Committee at Beaver Dam Winter Sports Club, and was manager of her son’s hockey team, the Long Island Gulls. In 2017, Portledge’s Athletic Department awarded Lisa with The Bliss Award for her “tireless work, effort and enthusiasm for the Varsity Hockey Team. She is a former board member of the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club and Planned Parenthood of Nassau County. She has lent her fundraising skills to myriad LI organizations including The Youth & Family Counseling Agency, Planting Fields Arboretum, North Shore Land Alliance, among others. Along with her husband, she established the Lisa & Lewis Warren Scholarship Endowment at Old Dominion University in 1998, which finances career-oriented work experiences.
The couple also worked together as Co-Chairs (20032006) of LICM’s “Friends Around the World Festival,” a multi-cultural celebration introducing visitors to the diverse cultures of their Long Island neighbors. Professionally, Lisa is President of Placid, LLC, a Real Estate Investment Company. She serves as a Commissioner to the Nassau County Planning Commission. Her professional resume also includes financial positions at Long Island Power Authority and Oppenheimer & Co. Lisa is a graduate of Hofstra University (BBA ’85), Duke University (MA ’92), and holds a diploma from the French Culinary Institute (NYC, ’95). Lewis Warren, Jr. matches his wife’s energy and community focus step by step. In the community, he currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency, and is Vice Chair of the Board of PENCIL, a NYC non-profit that partners public schools with businesses. He has held board leadership positions with Long Island Children’s Museum, the Robert Toigo Foundation, Old Dominion University, and the Green Vale School. He has twice received the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the “Black Achiever in Industry Award” from the YMCA of Greater New York. He has been named a “top 100 under 50 Diverse Executives and Emerging Leaders” by Diversity MBA magazine and honored as one of “75 Most Powerful Blacks on Wall Street” by Black Enterprise magazine. Professionally, he serves as Managing Director and National Industry Executive, in the Commercial Bank of J.P. Morgan. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Old Dominion University, and earned MBA and JD degrees from the University of Virginia. Long Island Children’s Museum salutes Community Champions Lisa and Lewis Warren for their unwavering support of children’s educational and emotional growth at all walks of academic life.
a message from our event co-chairs “Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero to me.” –Fred Rogers 2020 … a year where our definition of heroes expanded and the who and what that was essential was made crystal clear. This year has been incredibly challenging; especially for children as they struggled with isolation, anxiety and stress during the months of lockdown. Long Island Children’s Museum immediately stepped up to provide support to children, parents and teachers under these difficult circumstances. While the Museum’s physical space closed, its mission remained vibrant. LICM staff prioritized digital content creation and staying connected with the community over all else. It met its audience where they were; putting online resources at the fingertips of parents and teachers to bridge the challenges of distance learning. Staff reimagined how experiential learning could coexist within a hands-off mandate. They evaluated and implemented physical plant modifications to provide enhanced health and safety protocols for visitors and staff to return when the time was right. While the Museum was busily churning out online resources and operational changes over its six months of closure, its revenue stream came to an abrupt stop. The Museum closed its fiscal year with a significant shortfall. With attendance caps in place and field trips on hold for the foreseeable future, fiscal normalcy is likely to be a slow path. LICM has demonstrated its value to this community over 26 years, providing educational experiences to nearly 5 million visitors and developing nationally recognized programs serving our most vulnerable neighbors. LICM is essential to the health and well-being of our community. Your support of the Museum is essential to addressing the Museum’s immediate needs and creating a sustainable future that allows its important work to continue.

Thank you to everyone donating tonight and who took the time to be with us as we celebrate Long Island Children’s Museum. You know first hand what an important role it plays in making our community strong. It is most appropriate that we are launching the Great Friend to Kids Award this year when the focus on supporting children is more necessary than ever. We can think of no better recipients for this inaugural honor than Lisa and Lewis Warren, who have made children’s and educational causes the cornerstone of their philanthropic service for nearly 30 years. Congratulations! We hope you enjoy Cupcakes & Cocktails Online and we look forward to celebrating together in 2021.

a letter from the museum president and board chair Thank you! There has never been a time when these two words needed to be said… or heard, more than now. 2020 has challenged us all on so many different levels: physically, emotionally, financially. Our community has suffered the loss of loved ones, we have watched children (and their families) grapple with distance learning, and business leaders struggle with difficult decisions as companies closed their doors and re-organized for a “new normal.” LICM has weathered many challenges over its 26-year life, including financial downturns and natural disasters like Superstorm Sandy. But we have never experienced anything like the last seven months! The reality of not-for-profit life is that we need revenue from admissions and memberships, gifts from donors, and grants from foundations to pay our staff and balance the budget. When we closed our doors due to the pandemic, LICM faced an unimaginable situation of no visitors and no ticket sales. At the same time, the need for our educational resources was never more crucial. Our staff pivoted immediately to create online content for families and schools, programming that provided stability and normalcy during this chaotic time. Performances from our theater archives, science experiments, and weekly story time sessions reached our virtual audience in their homes, classrooms, libraries, camps and daycare centers. Fulfilling our mission during this unsettled time has kept our staff and board extremely focused, busy and positive. Our doors are once again open, and we are united in our commitment to LICM and our belief in its importance to the community.
L-R: Roni Kohen-Lemle, Suzanne LeBlanc
Going virtual with our gala allows us to include everyone, and we are thrilled that this greater audience can celebrate our first Great Friend to Kids Award recipients, Lisa and Lewis Warren. These champions for children have put 30 years of support behind organizations that enable children to discover and realize their dreams. The funds raised from tonight’s event will enable us to continue to serve as a trusted and safe gathering place where families can meet to learn from and about each other and the world we share. We are dedicated to respect and access for all. In this time of polarization and uncertainty, our mission remains more important than ever before. Thank you all for believing in us, for supporting us, and for joining us!

SPecial Guest bios awards host Jenna Bush Hager, Co-Host, TODAY with Hoda and Jenna, joined TODAY as a correspondent and contributor in August 2009. Hager has conducted a wide range of interviews with notable figures including former first lady Michelle Obama, Reese Witherspoon, Joanna Gaines, Katherine Schwarzenegger and fellow first daughter Susan Ford Bales. As part of her work on TODAY, Hager received a 2012 Daytime Emmy® Award for Outstanding Morning Show. In 2011, she was honored as one of Glamour’s Women of the Year alongside her mother and sister. Prior to joining TODAY, Hager was a reading teacher at a public school in Baltimore. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Washington D.C. in 2005. Hager is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller “Sisters First,” written with her sister Barbara Bush, and the New York Times bestseller “Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope,” which she wrote after interning with UNICEF in Latin America. She also co-authored the children’s books “Our Great Big Backyard” and “Read All About It!” with her mother. She is currently an editor-at-large for Southern Living. In 2004, Hager graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in English. She lives in New York with her husband, Henry Hager, their two daughters Mila and Poppy, and their son Hal.
event host Five-time Emmy® Award nominee Leslie Carrara-Rudolph is a multi-faceted entertainer and creator best known for performing “Abby Cadabby” on Sesame Street and “Bubbles” in the Jim Henson Company’s Splash And Bubbles. A graduate of San Francisco State University (BA, Child Development Through The Arts), Leslie got her start as a puppeteer on ABC’s Muppets Tonight and went on to develop her own signature character, candy-loving 5-year old Lolly Lardpop! Leslie and Lolly have performed at LICM over the years, beginning with the Museum’s Puppets Take Long Island Festival. They are excited and honored to be part of this event shining a light on Long Island Children’s Museum and celebrating their inspiring work for families.
SPecial Guest bios Jeff Boyer brings his world-famous, Guinness Book of World Records-holding bubble mastery to the Cupcakes & Cocktails audience. Like many of us, Boyer became excited about bubbles and physics as a child. But he took his interest in bubbles to the max; becoming an internationally acclaimed pioneer of highly interactive bubble performances. A variety artist with over 25 years of entertainment experience, Boyer recognized the universal appeal of these soapy spheres. His crowd-pleasing performances transcend language, cultural, age, and ability barriers as he juggles, sculpts and builds with bubbles.
Brumsic Brandon’s career has taken him from Westbury, NY to the Amazon Rainforest and back again to the community he loves. After graduating from Howard University with a degree in zoology, Brandon conducted entomological research in the Amazon Rainforest. Upon completion of the research, he returned to his alma mater, Westbury Middle School, as a substitute teacher. This experience sparked his commitment to education. He eventually obtained master’s degrees from New York University and Long Island University. After gaining classroom experience, he opened and ran New York City’s first alternative high school for students with a superintendent’s suspension. He also taught at the American Museum of Natural History, was a public educator for New York City’s Recycling Program and administered the Upward Bound Program at the University of Maryland. He returned to Westbury School District in 1999. Throughout his tenure, he chaired the science department and established various STEM collaborations with local universities and STEM institutions. He developed and supervised the Physics-First Honors STEM Academy at the Cradle of Aviation Museum and served as Curriculum & Professional Development Advisor for LICM’s Westbury STEM Partnership. Over the past 12 years, Mr. Brandon has been involved in an effort to provide education for girls in Ghana, West Africa. Annually, he visits the NSABA Diaspora Senior Girls High School with founder and philanthropist Don Felder to assess the needs of the school and community. The school now has a population of over 1,000 students. Brandon recognizes that few are given the opportunity to create a career giving back to the community where they grew up and love. His retirement will not stop these efforts. He looks forward to expanding his efforts to support education in West Africa and providing any assistance he can to ensure quality STEM education for all.
SPecial Guest bios Mica Hendricks was born ages ago into the traveling circus of military life, and has been fortunate enough to have seen a decent chunk of the world as a result. At a young age, she developed a sort of Darwinian-added appendage, as her sketchbook rarely left her hands. People who didn’t take the time to get to know her simply called her “that girl that draws.” A few years out of college, she happily served 4 years in Hawaii as a photolithographer, leading a prepress topographic mapping team, where she met her husband. When her daughter was age 4, they began drawing together. The art they created went viral, and she was happy to share their work in places like Buzzfeed, HuffPost, Good Morning America, Ellen online and Yahoo Shine. She has completed a TED talk on the collaborations with her daughter, taught classes in art and spoken in seminars with educators. This collaboration was showcased in an LICM exhibition, “Mother and Daughter: Drawing Together — The Art of Mica and Myla Hendricks,” during the Museum’s 25th birthday celebration. She and her family currently reside in Missouri, where she works a day job as a graphic artist for the military.
Aimee Terzulli joined Long Island Children’s Museum in 1993 as a college intern and has worked in museum education for the past 26 years. She is currently the Director of Education & Visitor Experience, where she is responsible for the strategic direction of all public and school programming, outreach and community partnerships and visitor service experiences. She holds a fine arts and an education degree from Long Island University (NY), and has taught at both the elementary and high school levels. Terzulli has developed many of the Museum’s iconic public programs and school offerings. She has considerable experience developing cultural programs; working alongside scholars, tradition bearers and community members to provide rich educational experiences for families. Terzulli is a frequent presenter at both regional and national museum conferences and serves on the National Leadership Cultural Competence Learning Institute Committee. On any given day you can find her teaching various programs throughout the Long Island community based in art, science and technology.
SPecial Guest bios Founded in 2010 under the direction of Lynnette Carr-Hicks, Uniondale High School Show Choir, “Rhythm of The Knight,” is in their 10th year competing on a national level. The group won the 2019 Show Choir of America Competition in Orlando, following up on their 2018 Grand Champions title win at the Fame Show Choir National Championship Series. They also won the 2018 Grand Champion in New York and 2018 Grand Champion at the Show Choir of America in Orlando, FL. The choir performed at the Long Island Music Hall of Fame Gala in 2018. The choir has been featured on numerous media outlets including the TODAY Show, The Steve Harvey Show, CNN, Fox & Friends, Good Day New York, ABC “Here and Now,” The New York Times and local cable stations. They have also performed with music legends Ben Vereen, Barry Manilow, Kenny Rogers and the rock group Foreigner. Rhythm of the Knight has also performed at the New York Mets and Brooklyn & Long Island Nets games. They performed the National Anthem at the New York Giants game. In 2019 the choir partnered with the Nassau Coliseum as their featured choir for special events. This year they didn’t have the opportunity to compete at any of their scheduled competitions due to COVID-19. Rhythm of the Knight was very disappointed, but it didn’t stop them from performing virtually. The choir was featured on “Graduate Together: America Honors the High School Class of 2020,” airing on ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS. Rhythm of The Knight is known for the vibrant energetic style they bring to the stage. They are passionately committed to inspiring and enlightening audiences with some of the most commanding voices in music. Rhythm of the Knight Show Choir Director Lynnette Carr-Hicks has set the tone for professionalism and accomplishment for her choir members. She has worked with some of the best in the music business, including Lalah Hathaway, Phil Collins and Al Jarreau, and displayed her talent in numerous Broadway and Off Broadway musicals. In 2018, she was named the “Music Educator of Note” at the Long Island Music Hall of Fame Gala; making history as the first African American educator to ever win this award.
thank you to all of our special guests for helping LICM build bridges to a brighter future.
2020 bright moments While the year has been defined by sadness, confusion, and anxiety, we have celebrated the bright spots we have witnessed, including: • A note from Sam’s mother who took the time to thank staff for going out of their way to support her son during the difficult time of quarantine. Sam has autism and “LOVES” the Museum. Staff members created a personalized “care package” for him filled with arts and crafts and the LICM booklets he collects to cheer him up until he could come back for “Friendly Hours.” • The $8 monthly pledge made by eight-year-old Avana Grace to help the Museum during our most difficult financial period ever. Avana Grace has loved LICM Theater productions since she was three and made a decision (with her mom) to support the Year-End Appeal for her favorite place. • The rave reviews received from a nurse from Queens who came to LICM with her family as soon as we reopened, became Museum members on the spot and returned three days in a row; valuing the Museum as a needed respite for everyone in her family. • The five-year-old who greeted us on his first visit back with an arms wide open shout, “I’ve missed this place!”
