New Year's Greetings Innovation once again drove development and led the global energy change with high-efficiency, low-cost, and high-reliability solar cell and module products this year.

In November, LONGi held two cell efficiency records for crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells and silicon HJT cells. Then in December, we set a new world record of 27.09% for the efficiency of crystalline silicon HJT back-contact (HBC) solar cells.

Furthermore, our Jiaxing production base has been acclaimed as the PV industry's first and only 'Lighthouse Factory,' setting a global standard in smart manufacturing and digitalization, tackling industry-wide challenges of delivery, quality, and sustainability.

As the New Year 2024 dawns upon us, I would like to extend sincere New Year greetings to everyone on behalf of LONGi APAC team.

Looking back on the transformative year of 2023, it was a period of vigorous advancement toward a cleaner, low-carbon energy landscape. It was also a year where LONGi deepened our commitment to the global market, particularly in fostering zero-carbon photovoltaic solutions and aiding the worldwide shift toward sustainable energy.

This year, we've been at the forefront of solar technology, introducing our next-generation 600W+ N-type Hi-MO 7 series modules equipped with HPDC technology. This innovation has driven down the cost of electricity for largescale ground-mounted solar projects, enhancing value for our customers around the world.

In 2023, LONGi APAC development did not stop. We deployed our team in dozens of key countries while deeply cultivating the local market and offering localized services.

We successively set up the Malaysian office, and relocated the Thailand and Indian offices, to provide with customized and timely service based on our customers’ needs.

We celebrated the commencement of our module factory in Selangor, Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in our international expansion and a leap forward for the Malaysian photovoltaic industry. It stands as a testament to our dedication to propelling Southeast Asia and the globe toward sustainable development and energy transformation.

We are proud to support global humanitarian efforts through our photovoltaic systems and solar technology training programs.

The year 2023 already went by and 2024 is coming. It will be a challenging year with supply and demand turbulence, technology upgrade, and competitive upheaval. LONGi APAC team will continue to enhance building capabilities of serving our customers, significantly improve localized service level , and continue to optimize the frontline CC3 team. The improvement of power generation efficiency is always the primary focus in the development of the photovoltaic industry. After years of research, LONGi believes that the highest efficiency among all current technology routes ultimately points to BC cell technology.

Whether TOPCon combines with BC and develops into TBC or HJT combines with BC and evolves into HBC, etc., to break through conversion efficiency, all paths will lead to BC structure. Specifically, due to the full back contact, BC cells can truly achieve 0 grid line on the front of the cell and ensure the maximum absorption of light. The theoretical limit of conversion efficiency is up to 29.1%, which is the closest to the limit efficiency of 29.43% for silicon cells. The efficiency improvement is extremely large and achievable; therefore, BC cells are considered to be the forefront of photovoltaic technology.

How does LONGi HBC achieve the silicon cell highest efficiency?

How does LONGi Perovskite/HJT tandem cell achieve the highest efficiency？

HBC is one of the advanced tech routes based on Back Contact cells. BC cells are characterized by the absence of fingers or busbars in the front side, placing all such elements on the back side, to maximizes the entire front surface for light absorption and photon generation. In this way, BC cells usually have higher current and efficiency on the same size wafers.

The tandem cells efficiency depends on both HJT cell efficiency and perovskite efficiency. LONGi has already mastered the best HJT tech, so the highest efficiency record mainly comes from the improvement of perovskite materials and the compatibility between the two cells.

Since the PN junction is on the back side of BC cells, the electron-hole pairs generated by photon have longer distance to get to the PN junctions and be separated. Thus, it has higher potential being reunited in this process, which has a high demand of minority-carrier lifetime. Fortunately, LONGi supplies high quality and high purity wafers to the industry for nearly 20 years, significantly contributing to solving this challenge.

LONGi HBC adopts the physical structure of BC and heterojunction passivation technology, which is derived from the 26.81% HJT world record. It inherits the highest voltage sourced from the best HJT passivation tech in the world and the highest current from BC structure. In addition, the profound manufacturing experience of HPBC helps LONGi master the laser graphics tech and get over the difficulties in BC mass-production.

As the top layer, the perovskite mainly absorbs the shortwavelength sunlight from 300nm to 800nm. And the bottom HJT mainly absorbs long-wavelength light from 800nm to 1200nm. Thus, one of the directions for perovskite materials improvement is on the performance of absorbing more shortwavelength light and transparency for long-wavelength, which benefits the bottom HJT. By this way, the current generated by perovskite can be higher to match the current of HJT to improve the whole efficiency.

In recent years, there has been a growing number of large-scale power plants that have commenced operations. However, the O&M process has encountered certain emerging issues. The previously advantageous complementary power generation from grass and forest is now facing new challenges in terms of ecological governance. Additionally, with the rapid expansion of photovoltaic operational capacity in the market, uneven professional levels among operations team members have given rise to new problems. Due to their lack of professional knowledge and experience, personnel involved in power plant operations may engage in improper actions or use inappropriate tools, resulting in significant property losses for PV power plants.

The presence of weeds and excessive vegetation growth in a regular scenario often poses security risks to PV modules. Regular weeding is necessary during operation, but it can also bring potential safety hazards. In the current maintenance mode, handheld lawn mowers are commonly used, which inevitably results in stone splatter on the ground during the weeding process. It has been found that the hand-held lawn mower operates at an extremely high speed, with the rope's end reaching speeds exceeding 100m/s. The splashing stones also move in a considerable velocity, resulting in significant impact forces that surpasses safety stress limits for the glass of bifacial module, which causing varying degrees of damage to the surface as depicted in figure 3. Based on the degree of damage, it can be roughly divided into three levels: the first involves visible broken glass as the direct cause; the second results in the formation of invisible damage—white spots—that are imperceptible to the naked eye; and the third level results in scratches on the glass surface. The latter two cases are easy to evolve into significant damage, such as glass cracking. In extreme cases, excessive force on the module or severe vibration can exacerbate these issues.

In the process of operations, taking appropriate measures can effectively prevent and mitigate the issue of weed stones splashing when modules are being broken. On one hand, weeding is not necessary when the grass is low around the module as it does not affect its normal operation and maintenance.

On the other hand, using a scythe or professional weeding equipment with a protective cover at the bottom during weeding operations can reduce the risk of stone splash.

Generally, the improper weeding practices can potentially result in stone splashes, leading to damage on PV modules. Inverter compatibility analysis of 2382 version module On July 7, 2023，LONGi and other 8 companies announced the achievement of a new generation standardized module size of 2382mm * 1134mm. However, there are two specifications for the 2382 standard size module: 66c (silicon wafer size 182 * 210mm) and 72c (182 * 191.6mm). After analyzing the inverter compatibility of these two versions, it was found that the 72c module has better inverter compatibility and system cost compared to the 66c module.

There are several main MPPT current specifications for inverters in the current industry, including 30/32/40/65A. However, due to the differences in silicon wafer size, there may be significant differences in module current, voltage, and other parameters, which can lead to different performance when adapting to mainstream inverters.

Current limiting analysis of 32A or 65A inverters

Taking the 16A * 2 inverter and 8% bifacial gain as an example, current limiting will occur under irradiance above 1084W/m2 for the 72c module compared to 985W/m2 for the 66c module.

Taking Hainan single day (28th Feb.) irradiation data as an example, The additional current limiting loss is 2.08% for the 66c module compared to the 72c format.

The additional current limiting loss of 66c module compared to the 72c module increases with the increase of bifacial gain. In addition, as the irradiation and temperature increase, the additional current limiting loss of the 66c module will also increase.

Compatibility and system cost analysis of 40A inverter There will be current limiting when using 30/32/65A for the 66c module. While for the 40A inverters, there will be limited DC/AC ratio due to insufficient current utilization for the 66c module.

The DC/AC ratio is limited when 40A inverter is used for the 66c module, with a maximum DC/AC ratio less than 1.2 compared to 1.5 DC/AC ratio of the 72c module using 32A (or 65A) inverter. Due to the limitation of DC/AC ratio, 66c will significantly increase the system BOS cost.

The table below shows the comparison of BOS for the two versions of 2382 module with DC/AC ratios of 1.5 and 1.2. The 72c module can reduce equipment and construction costs for inverters, AC cables, boost equipment, etc. with a larger DC/AC ratio design, and the cost reduction will be about 8 cents/W.

The COP28 summit will be the first global stocktake since The Paris Agreement and will be the first formal assessment of progress by countries to meet their agreed-upon targets from 2015. The summit will focus on how countries can significantly reduce emissions, including reducing the production of fossil fuels, expanding renewable energy sources, and increasing investment in climate change-related initiatives.

COP28 marks the fifth year of LONGi’s participation in the summit.

During this year’s event, LONGi will make several high-profile announcements, including an initiative of “Green Power+ Green Hydrogen” to make the world carbon neutral. Victorious Moment Adoption of a Qinling giant panda 2023.12.5 Dubai Recently, the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is being held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. On December 5th, at the "Green Power for Climate Action and Biodiversity Conservation" side event in the Solar+ Pavilion of the Blue Zone, LONGi officially launched the "National Treasure Zero-Carbon Life Plan." BloombergNEF ranks LONGi 100% bankable in its 2023 report The ranking is based on BNEF’s annual survey of those involved in the global solar industry regarding PV module brands and new technologies. Survey responses were sought from banks, funding institutions, engineering procurement and construction firms(EPCs),independent power producers(IPPs)and technical advisers from organizations involved in 645GW of financed capacity.

All respondents recognized LONGi's bankability and strongly endorsed the company’s reliability. For developers, investors and asset owners, a range of metrics exist for assessing a manufacturer's bankability, particularly installed capacity and financial stability.

In terms of financial stability, the financial health of a manufacturer is an important consideration for banks, with LONGi posting one of the four highest scores in the widely recognized Altman-Z metric used as a related measurement tool.

The BNEF survey also provides insights into new module technology, indicating that 182mm to be the current dominant size. Third party experts suggest that 182 makes it easier for manufacturers to source standardized components such as backsheets, glass, EVA and aluminum frames, with tracker compatibility also considered to be more straightforward.

Detailed in Design, Fear Not in Typhoon Specific Design Strategies for the Security of PV Power Plant in Typhoon Area Our world has as vast as 71% of its surface covered by ocean, surrounding which are the coastlines with a total length of up to 300,000 kilometers. Therefore, coastal photovoltaic power plants--which have their natural advantage of being close to electricity consumption point--are becoming increasingly universal in recent years. But on the contrary of their superiority, coastal PV power plants also have high risk to suffer from typhoon. When a typhoon makes its landfall, it sometimes causes whole gales (level 10) in nearby areas, and the local gusts may even reach the highest level 17. In August, super typhoon “Doksuri” has caused significant damage to the 100+MW PV project in Pangasinan, Philippines. This event has raised concerns among insiders of the photovoltaic industry about the reliability of photovoltaic modules and their support brackets.

In order to ensure the working capability for PV modules and support brackets in such extreme weather conditions, a specific investigation--including the strength of module, detailed calculation of brackets, component installation and cost optimization--must be implemented and well considered.

Module Product Strict testing for typhoon capacity

PV modules, which are regarded as the frontline to bear wind load, should be considered with high priority when facing the challenge of typhoon. Under strong wind conditions, the module’s front surface bears wind pressure, while whirlpools are generated on the back surface. The positive load on frontside and negative load on backside will act on the module simultaneously, causing pressure on the glass shell and aluminum frames, which may eventually lead to damage and breakage on these components. Additionally, the deformation and vibration caused by wind pressure may also lead to the module’s internal battery cracking and power attenuation.

For conventional PV modules, the IEC61215 standard demands that the backside of the module should withstand 2400Pa wind load, which would be equivalent to the force of hurricane (level 13). In order to determine the bearing capacity of components in such harsh environments, Longi collaborated with TÜV North Germany to conduct wind tunnel tests for PV component. The result of the tests indicated that after withstanding a maximum wind speed of 60m/s, Longi modules showed clear EL images, less 1% power degradation, and no damage to the module appearance. The tested modules were able to pass the limit test equivalent to a wind speed of level 17 typhoon with a bearing capacity of 4341Pa (safety factor 1.5), nearly twice of the standard value and doubled the reliability in extreme environment conditions.

In addition to the capacity of bearing static loads, the modules’ performance in dynamic working conditions is also essential to be determined. To effectively simulate the real outdoor wind load situation, Longi conducted 1500Pa strict dynamic load testing. The product has passed 30000 cycle of the strict dynamic load tests, and the power degradation was only 0.5%, which was far lower than the IEC standard value. These tests proves that Longi modules are truly able to withstand typhoons in harsh environment conditions, as well as providing excellent power generation efficiency in the meantime.

Engineering Design Detailed design to lower structural risk

In Longi, we provide detailed engineering design as part of our customized overall solutions for customers. Specifically, for PV projects in typhoon areas, the project sites of different terrain and elevation are classified according to the degree of typhoon impact on the basis of the numerical results of modules’ wind tunnel tests. The basic parameters of wind loads--including dynamic response factor, shape factor, and exposure factor-- are differentiated based on the sites’ classification. Thus, the detailed design of load is worked out. Moreover, the photovoltaic array in the site will be divided into zones (outer zone, inner zone, and deep inner zone). The shape factors of each zone will be differentiated considering the obstruction between rows and the wake flow effects (as shown in the diagram below). By finely distinguishing the wind load values, the actual and "not excessive" wind load is implemented as reasonable input conditions for the analysis of PV brackets and foundations.

For the calculation and analysis of PV bracket structures, the traditional analysis mode simplifies wind loads into static forces and uses static mechanics theory to find the solution. However, the stiffness of PV bracket structure is relatively low, which causes distinct dynamic response for each component under the influence of typhoon. Calculating the stress of all components using just one set of load combos would cause significant differences from the real situation and may even lead to bracket overturning.

To make the analysis process more reliable, Longi uses a threedimensional integrated model for stress analysis (as shown in the "PV Bracket Calculation Sketch"). Firstly, the basic dynamic characteristics of the PV bracket structure--including mode shape, frequency, and period--are determined through modal analysis.

The first three modes are to be restricted, making the first two modes mainly translational, while the period of the first mode is not too long in order to prevent weak overall stiffness of the structure.

The second step is harmonic response analysis. By calculating the response of PV bracket structures under different frequencies, we can gain the displacement or stress response curves at key points of the bracket. By observing the curves, the peak response can also be determined. Thus, the resonance frequencies should be avoided for the sake of the safety of PV brackets.

Last but not the least, with the combination of reasonable input and calculation, the power generation efficiency together with the investment cost will be comprehensively considered. PV software will be used to simulate the optimal inclination angle of modules. The inclination angle needs to be minimized as much as possible to reduce the wind shape factor and dynamic response factor of the bracket with acceptable solar radiation loss. Therefore, an optimal solution for the entire PV plant design would be finally obtained.

Process support Connection mode variation, further improvement to typhoon resistance

The details of installation nodes in PV bracket should of course not be ignored in the overall solution. The current mainstream modules have their aluminum frame height changed from 35mm to 30mm, with only 1.2-1.5mm in material thickness. If traditional bolt connection was still used between the module’s frame and the bracket purlin, then the installation hole on the module’s frame would be much possible to be torn open under the instantaneous maximum wind speed of the typhoon, eventually caused the module to fall off the bracket. This incident often occurs in peripheral areas of hill, windward slopes, and mountain ridges.

To avoid the incident, we divided the modules array into blocks based on the level of typhoon, and connection modes for blocks would be vary according to the severity of typhoon impact: For severely affected blocks, a combination of hoops and buckles would be applied for connection; in medium-affected blocks, we adopted a connection form using bolts and washers; and in blocks with weak impact, bolt connections would still be used. Distinct measures according to zoning contributed to the resistance to typhoon while also balanced economic efficiency.

In areas severely affected by typhoons, there is obvious vibration on purlins when typhoon makes its landfall. Therefore, to prevent bolt detachment and loosening, large washers and multiple nuts will be used for the connection of purlins and bracket beams, providing stronger anti sway ability for brackets.

Epilogue:

Affected by the moderate to high intensity El Nino phenomenon, typhoon activity in the Pacific is significantly higher than previous years in 2023.

“Doksuri”, followed by “Khanun”, “Saola”, “Haikui”, “Koinu”. Higher frequency of extreme weather means multiple challenges to PV power plants in coastal areas in the foreseeable future. To ensure the stable operation of coastal PV projects, it is necessary to overcome difficulties from multiple aspects such as module products, bracket design, and installation nodes.

As an old Chinese saying goes, “A jump of a steed covers no more than 10 paces, while a nag can travel far without stopping in 10 days.

That’s because its persistence.” A reasonable and reliable solution is not built on paper or in the air, but needs to be validated through a large number of PV projects and wind tunnel tests on complex terrains. Longi continuously stick to modules’ quality, working on detailed engineering design and customized installation technology, guarding PV power plant from typhoon challenges during the 25-30 years life cycle, and aiding customers for long-term stable operation of PV projects.

Leveraging the green silicon photovoltaic industry, Chuxiong has achieved high-quality, leapfrog economic development and is hailed as the "rising growth pole of Yunnan".

The Datang Wuding 100MW photovoltaic power plant is one of Chuxiong's green energy benchmarks. The plant is located in Tianxin township, in the central-northern part of Wuding county in the Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture, at an altitude between 2180 and 2350 meters, and covering an area of approximately 2600 mu. The project began generating power on December 16, 2021.

A stable and well-operated power plant is the foundation for investors to extract long-term value, and reliable, high-output modules are the core element of the power plant. It has exclusively used LONGi's Hi-MO 5 products. From July 2022 to September 2023, the actual power generation was 26,243.88 MWh, exceeding the power plant's design value by 5.95%, significantly reducing the power plant's BOS cost and bringing the power plant owner higher-than-expected power generation revenue. The plant's outstanding power generation performance is attributed to LONGi's leading product technology and excellent quality control. By employing gallium-doping technology, LONGi has addressed the issue of higher light-induced degradation in p-type PERC cells, enhancing the long-term power generation performance of the modules. Half-cell technology has significantly reduced the module's operational current, which in turn leads to lower internal losses for the module and less impact from shading. As the main contributor to long-term power plant profits, the quality control of modules directly determines the safety of project investments. Guided by the concept of LONGi's life-cycle standard, a comprehensive quality control system has been established. Through up to 338 process controls and 153 quality inspections, LONGi ensures accurate calibration of the modules' power output, stringent verification of long-term reliability, and continuous tracking of outdoor power generation performance, fully safeguarding customer value.

In addition to its excellent power generation performance, this power plant is also a pioneer in Yunnan's active exploration of the "agro-photovoltaic complementarity" model. January 2022 marked the auspicious connection of the Bom Nome power plant to the nation's grid. With the excellent performance, it now approaches its second anniversary of operation, a period marked by remarkable feats. The power plant has selected Hi-MO5 bifacial modules with a power of 535W and a conversion efficiency of 20.9%. Applying 1500V string inverter solutions and trackers, the design maximizes the installation capacity within a limited space and effectively increases power generation. In addition, the Hi-MO5 employs smart soldering technology, which ensures highly reliable micro-gap interconnections, significantly enhancing product efficiency and the stability of current output. The integration of bifacial technology also considerably improves the energy conversion efficiency.

Furthermore, exceptional warranty services offer comprehensive optimization across various key performance indicators throughout the entire life cycle of the power plant, providing the system with the most cost-efficient electricity possible.

The project site has a tropical savanna climate with high temperature throughout the year, as well as dry and wet seasons. As of August 2023, the Bom Nome project has proudly recorded a cumulative annual power generation of 388.592 million kWh.
