To our valued customers, It is amazing to me that time seems to fly faster every year.

As our company turns another year older, and hopefully a little wiser, we continue to manage an incredible number of customers with very diverse requirements at both facilities.

We had a good year, but 2016 proved challenging in the sense that we found ourselves behind for the majority of the fall season. There were several factors at play that translated into longer lead times than what our customers have come to know and expect from Arway, and we would like to apologize for any inconvenience these delays caused. What I would like everyone to know is that we had an army of dedicated employees working around the clock (literally) in an effort to keep up with all of our customers’ demands. We have every intention as a company to make efforts to reduce lead times, and we hope to be better prepared for the seasonal rush.

That said, I would like our customers to remember that we are a manufacturing company, and we do need time to actually produce what has become a very long list of stock items. Furthermore, the FDA has recently created a new set of regulations under FSMA (The Food Safety and Modernization Act) which now requires food companies to New.FinalComboLogo(perCraig)4.2015 adopt new, stricter protocols within manufacturing facilities.

One piece of the regulation requires more attention to allergen separation, which will without a doubt change the way we run our production schedules. In truth, the complexity of the regulations will most likely add to required lead time.

Although we plan to be better prepared with additional inventory, we would still like to ask our customers to also plan for additional lead time, especially in the fall.

Production and overhead costs continue to rise. Labor costs, in particular, have surged significantly. The City of Chicago implemented a higher minimum wage versus the State of Illinois. The effect of this mandate has actually increased labor costs throughout the entire Chicagoland area, as competition for higher paying jobs coupled with a tighter labor market has driven labor rates significantly higher. We run a very efficient plant, but it still requires a lot of labor to get the job done.

-Market Information Almond pricing has continued to soften versus last year. After hitting record highs due to the drought in California and robust global demand, the market has shifted lower due to a large crop, a significant amount of carry-in inventory, slowing global demand (at the higher levels), and ample water supply. We hope for continued stability in the almond industry; however, demand has been robust at these lower levels. We do not expect any further easing of prices, but you should note that all of our almond prices have been reduced.

Cashew pricing has continued to rise. Last year, conventional wisdom was that cashew prices should have fallen, but with limited amounts of inventory and plenty of demand, prices have instead skyrocketed. The current consensus is that we are unlikely to see any short term relief for the first half of the year. We are hopeful to see some easing in this market as we head into the fall, but that may just be wishful thinking. For now, all of our cashew prices have been raised to reflect the current market conditions.

Pecan pricing has also been on the rise. With limited supply and continued heavy demand (especially out of China), prices have surged. Earlier in the year, pricing was close to $7.00/lb. The market seems to have eased off a bit from what would have been unprecedented levels, but with the supply the industry has to offer, it does not look like this market will significantly decline for some time. You should note that pricing for all of our pecan products have been increased.
