Zac Goodwin investigates the products that crystallise when a solution of magnesium sulphate is mixed with either iron sulphate or copper sulphate in different proportions. He has also been able to prepare a triple salt of iron magnesium copper sulphate.

Timothy Oluwaremi investigates which transition metal ions catalyse the reaction between zinc and sulphuric acid. He’s found that Cu2+, Co2+ and Ni2+ ions are all effective catalysts and that the anion present can slow the reaction by inhibiting diffusion in solution.

College tour take a 60-second tour of the College to see what’s happening!

Danielle Banks investigates the reaction between bromide, bromate and hydrogen ions in solution and measures the extent by which ethanoate ions provide a lower activation barrier to the reaction.

Danish sixth form college student exchange

Four members of staff from Denmark’s largest sixth form college, Silkeborg Gymnasium, visited Long Road at the end of May to meet our students, watch a range of classes, discuss and compare curriculum management, but above all, to arrange a student exchange. The plan is for Long Road Biology, Design Technology, Geography and Business students to work with Silkeborg Academy students studying Science to design environmental technology products. Funding for the project is being sought from the European Union Comenius Fund. Mike Bryant, Vice Principal Long Road Sixth Form College, says: ‘There are already excellent

links between Long Road Sixth Form College and Silkeborg Gymnasium. We’re particularly pleased to be able to plan exchange opportunities for students at Long Road to visit and study in Denmark over the next two years as a result of this week’s visit.’

Fundraisers Suzanzna Wolff Suzanna Wolff, who is studying Biology, Chemistry, Maths and English Literature, took part in the 2013 Live Below the Line Challenge to raise money for Oxfam. The challenge was to live on less than £1 a day for food for five days, with no food or drink to be given to you by anyone. “A typical day would be two slices of toast for breakfast, occasionally with baked beans, a sandwich and spaghetti for lunch, and spaghetti for dinner. I had tomato sauce, kidney beans, sweet corn and sardines to add to the spaghetti and had variations of these in each spaghetti meal.” To raise more money, Suzanna also held a cake sale in College.

Year 2 Sport Level 3 Diploma students Jake Butterworth-Lowe, Matt Bauld, James Biswell, Ben Squires and Casey Phillips, who have just completed their Sport Diploma, raised almost £300 for Cancer Research with a Gladiator Duel, Guess the Number of Balloons in the Car competition and cake sale. Jake explains: “We did it because in our Sport Diploma course we had a task called Sports Marketing. This is where we carry out research and plan an event. We wanted to raise as much money for Cancer Research as possible and invested some of our own money to make it successful.

Katie Godfrey raises £10,000 to build classrooms in Kenya then goes and helps to build them!

When Katie Godfrey left Long Road with A levels in Politics, History and English Literature, she spent six months teaching in a school in Kenya. Then, when she left, she offered to build an additional classroom for them! “The Kenyan government will provide a teacher if a school builds another classroom, “ she explains. “Baraka Primary School has around 1,000 pupils and had 18 classrooms – 50 to 70 children per class isn’t ideal! When I got back to England, I started to raise money while working as a library assistant and receptionist at local company TWI. One of my first fund-raising efforts was to do a skydive while dressed as a leopard – never again! I also held a launch party at my parents’ house, my godmother hosted a dinner party, and I held cake sales and pub quizzes. This brought me up to about £3500. A distant relative heard about my activities and sent an email round – as a direct result of this I received money as a bequest, which brought in a further £4000.” Last June I went back to Kenya, having set up Classrooms for Baraka, and got to work building a classroom. The local builders worked from 6am to 6pm. I did lots of running around visiting suppliers and haggling. My daily living allowance was very small so I had to keep going. We built two classrooms and completed the kitchen the school had already begun to build themselves.” Meanwhile, Katie had started a History degree at the University of Glasgow. “After my first year I transferred to a Politics degree with a focus on international development, which was relevant to my project in Kenya. I am planning to go back to Kenya in the summer of 2014. I hope to raise a further £3500 which will enable me to build two classrooms when I return.” Katie was so busy with her fundraising that she had no idea that she had been nominated for a 2012 Cambridgeshire YOPEY (Young Person of the Year) award. “The final was held at Ely Cathedral, and I was amazed to find out that I was the joint winner! I won £200, which was great, but even better was the £400 I also won for the Baraka Foundation.” Katie is hoping to work in development when she graduates from university. “I have learned so much over the last few years. To start with a gap year placement, to raising money, setting up the Baraka Foundation and its website, to winning the YOPEY award – it has all been amazing.”

Volunteers Year 1 Sport Level 3 Diploma students

A group of students on the Sport Level 3 Diploma course volunteered at the Sainsbury’s Schools Games PLUS Festival in June. The festival brings pupils with disabilities together to compete in a range of sports including athletics, tag rugby, netball and cricket. Schools from Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Huntingdon all took part. Our students acted as stewards by directing schools and participants, organising drinks and food, handing out medals and trophies, collecting results and supporting the sports.

Adam Brown Adam Brown, Level 2 Business Diploma student, has been selected to be this year’s Cambridge Mayor’s Cadet. “I am a member of the Air Cadets, which I joined three years ago – I was looking for something new and different to do, and a member of my family read an article about the cadets. We do a lot of flying both locally at RAF Lakenheath and in Scotland, and I am working towards my pilot’s licence flying Grob Tutors. We were approached by the Mayor’s Office, and I was invited for interview. I was really pleased to be selected. I had an opportunity to meet the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh when they visited Cambridge, and on the same day I was officially enrolled onto Cambridge City Council. I am looking forward to all my ceremonial duties and to meeting people in a range of official roles, including the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire.”

Film Makers Ryd Cook Ryd studied Film Studies, Photography and Media at Long Road, worked as a Media Technician at the College and is now an award-winning film maker. Thrown premiered at Cambridge Film Festival in 2011 and won Ryd the Best Short Film Director award at Bootleg Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, last year. The film is about about two friends trying to get rid of a chair following a family bereavement. Thrown can be viewed for free on Ryd’s website, http://rydcook.com/work_thrown.htm Ryd is now working on his next film, which features a member of Long Road staff!

Bradley Stearn Film Studies, Media Studies and ICT student Bradley Stearn has made a film about cycling in Cambridge for his Extended Project. “The relationship between cars and bicycles in Cambridge is a hot topic - you read about it every day - so making a documentary on the subject was an obvious choice for me.” Bradley’s video Pinchpoint: Motorists & Cyclists in Cambridge has already proved extremely successful on YouTube. Scenes of roads and cycle pathways, some shared with pedestrians, are interspersed with interviews with local people. The video takes a neutral viewpoint while highlighting differences of opinion. “I am planning to study Film Production at Ravensbourne College of Design & Communication after Long Road,” says Bradley. Athletes Ben Snaith

visits Barcelona

Sport Level 3 Diploma student Ben Snaith is a 400m sprinter, and member of the U20 GB team. Ben recently took part in the Loughborough International Athletics competition where he had a chance to pit his skills against the 2008 Olympic 400m finalist Martyn Rooney. Ben has run the 400m in under 48 seconds. He is a member of the Cambridge and Coleridge athletics club and has been coached by Olympic official Mick Graham since he was 10. Ben’s already been scouted by three US universities and offered scholarships by each.

Alice Galloway PE, Psychology and English Language student Alice Galloway is also proving to be a top class athlete in the making. Alice competes both in individual sports and the pentathlon. Alice, who also trains with the Cambridge and Coleridge athletics club, has recently competed in the Cambridgeshire County Athletics Championships U20 women’s class, where she achieved two new personal bests: 12.77 seconds in the 100m and 26.21 seconds in the 200m. She won the 100m and hurdles and came second in the shot put. Alice is competing in the 200m and the shot put in the National Outdoor Championships in June.

Level 3 Performing Arts Diploma students Level 3 Performing Arts Diploma students devise spinechilling performance: The Holocaust and Genocide – Will we ever learn? For their Political Theatre topic, which focuses on the works of Bertolt Brecht, Performing Arts Diploma students devised a performance inspired by workshops by Keystone Arts & Heritage (based on the Holocaust Memorial Day) and Splendid Productions. The resulting performance was a chilling demonstration of how inhumanity can evolve from the most mundane situations, from Nazi Germany to Cambodia to Bosnia to Rwanda to Darfur. Mike Levy, who ran the Keystone workshop, commented: “I thought the piece was unusually strong and managed to tell a distressing but pertinent story in a very fresh and effective way. Well done to all concerned.”

The squad visited Barcelona this spring to visit The Camp Nou stadium (which is the home ground for Barcelona’s biggest and most popular football team, and which was used in the 1992 Olympics), to train in top class facilities, to play against three local basketball teams Grup Barna, Riera and Jovetud Badalona and, finally, to visit the famous aquarium. Academy Coach Pete Charlsworth comments: “Once again Spain and Badalona have been amazing hosts, and as a squad we have learned a lot to bring back with us for the last stages of this season and into next year.”
