Established in 1968, the Mankota 4-H Beef Club began with just a handful of cattle-savvy youth dressed in white shirts, black ties, and proudly showing Hereford and Angus-influenced cattle. Over the years, the club has grown into a vibrant community Today we have 24 members and over 35 head of cattle, representing a wide variety of breeds and local communities, including Mankota, Val Marie, Lafleche, Wood Mountain, Kincaid, Hazenmore, Aneroid, and Ponteix.
The animals showcased in this catalogue are a true reflection of the dedication, time, and hard work that go into this long-standing program Each member has spent countless hours feeding, grooming, and preparing their projects and it shows.
We extend a sincere thank you to our judges Russ & Cindy Sibbald for taking time out of their busy lives to evaluate these cattle Your knowledge and guidance are invaluable to our members, helping shape the future of our young cattlemen and cattlewomen
"Learntodobydoing"
This simple motto of the 4-H Program reflects something far greater than words, it captures a way of life.
At its core, 4-H teaches youth critical life skills: responsibility, perseverance, public speaking, leadership, and community involvement These young members rise early and stay late, feeding and caring for their steers in every kind of weather learning firsthand the value of hard work and commitment.
But the lessons don’t stop in the barnyard.
As part of their journey, these kids must also take their steers to market, connecting with buyers and gaining insight into the business side of agriculture a vital, real-world education in entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
Here’s where you come in.
By purchasing a 4-H steer, you not only support local youth you invest in the future of agriculture, and gain a unique opportunity to promote your business or give back to your community Whether you ' re looking to advertise, donate or enjoy top-quality local beef purchasing a 4-H steer is a 520-4784 625-7345 )298-7877 472-7867

How buying a 4-H Steer Works
Market Value
The market value of a steer is based on its live weight multiplied by the current market price per pound.
For example:
Live weight: 1300 lbs
Market price: $3.05/lb
Total market value: $3,965
This price reflects what the steer could sell for at market and varies slightly from week to week.
Advertising Support & Business Sponsorship
If you or your business want to support 4-H members beyond market value, you can choose to pay above market value as a way to advertise your business during the sale, increase a 4-H member’s project income, and show community support Supporting 4-H in this way is an advertising expense for your business.
Example:
Business A and Business B each contribute $750
- Together, they buy a steer for $5,460 ($4 20/lb)
- They then resell the steer at the local livestock market for $3,965 These animals are eligible for resale the following week at Heartland Livestock, and will go straight there from the 4-H sale.
- The $1,500 difference is written off as advertising expense and both businesses gain positive community exposure.
- Multiple businesses can partner together on a purchase This increases support and spreads out the cost while still benefiting from advertising
Want to Keep the Beef?
If you ' re buying a steer to fill your freezer, we can help with the process. Here's what you need to know:
- Check out PAGE 3 for meat calculations! This is very affordable meat!
- Members have spots reserved at local Abattoirs.
- After purchase, we will assist with delivery
- You will also pay the cutting and wrapping fee, typically around $800
- You get to choose your preferred cuts (steaks, roasts, ground beef, etc ) & then pick up your packaged beef once it’s ready.
This is a great way to stock your freezer with local, well-cared-for beef, and know exactly where your meat is coming from
Flexibility for Buyers
You can:
Buy at market value
Bid higher to support a member or advertise your business
Split a purchase with another individual or business
Choose to resell the steer or keep the meat
