BBC RADIO 3 LUNCHTIME CONCERTS From April to June, the LSO International Violin Festival brings together orchestral concerts, LSO Discovery events, and exhibitions and discussions hosted by The Strad. LSO St Luke’s presents four dazzling solo recitals by leading violinists, three of whom will also perform concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican.

This concert is a chance to meet six composers in their second year of Soundhub membership, who have spent the year pushing their work in unexpected directions with a series of new chamber pieces written for LSO musicians to perform.

Every year the Panufnik Composers Scheme gives six composers on the cusp of a professional career the rare but essential opportunity to have their music performed and scrutinised by a professional symphony orchestra. Panufnik composers benefit from one-to-one advice from Colin Matthews (Composition Director), instrumental masterclasses with LSO musicians and open access to LSO concerts and rehearsals.

The Soundhub scheme, has been conceived with the needs of composers as its core principle.

Composers taking part in the Soundhub scheme are encouraged to experiment, push boundaries and refine their music, with access to LSO players and flexible rehearsal space at LSO St Luke’s.

Simon Halsey conductor Ahead of the LSO’s performance of Brahms’ epic German Requiem on Sunday 24 May, LSO Choral Director Simon Halsey runs a workshop on the music that inspired it.

Whether you sing in a local choir or haven’t sung since school, this is an exciting opportunity to rediscover your hobby! The day is accompanied by piano and requires some sightsinging ability; please identify your vocal part when booking.

Spectators can purchase tickets to watch an informal performance of the day’s works at 3.30pm, for which access will be available from 3.15pm.

The Requiem plays a crucial role in the Catholic liturgy, offering peace to departed souls in ceremonial form and relieving the burden of mourning through music and mass. The text remained the same for centuries.

It was sacred, and so the composer’s job was never to change it but to take these words as they had been handed down and mould the music around them.

And this was enough for many of them, including composers of such boundless creativity as Mozart.

But not for Brahms. Brahms changed everything – the words, the music – his was to be a Requiem like no other before it. A German Requiem, set in the language of the people to create a radically human vision of the divine. He carefully selected his own passages from Luther’s Bible and avoided the overtly religious to create a text that instead celebrates the inherent divinity of man. For Brahms there was no essential difference: God built the world in seven days, and so Brahms built his Requiem in seven movements.

Internatio nal Violin Festival AMAZING CONCERTS. AMAZING VIOLINISTS. Between April and June, the LSO brings together a line-up of superstar soloists for the LSO International Violin Festival. Alongside twelve showstopping orchestral concerts on the Barbican stage, the series continues at LSO St Luke’s with opportunities to hear intimate chamber music performances and find out more about the violin.

The 2014/15 season of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts concludes in May and June with a series of solo performances by four leading violinists – Christian Tetzlaff, James Ehnes, Veronika Eberle and Nicola Benedetti – three of whom also join us for concerts with the LSO at the Barbican.

They showcase chamber music written for the violin over the centuries, from Bach to Brahms.

Four free lunchtime recitals also give you the chance to discover more about the violin. We’ll be joined by LSO musicians and students from the Guildhall School for some of their favourite pieces for the violin, with presenter Rachel Leach on hand to guide you through the music.

Over at the Barbican, there’s plenty more to enjoy, including a series of free events hosted by The Strad, featuring violin-makers exhibitions and pre-concert talks with expert speakers.

Colleen mixes acoustic instruments with electronic sampling techniques to create rhythmic, lyrical folk-pop songs. Her new album Captain of None focuses on melodic repertoire, with fast-paced tracks rooted by prominent bass lines and her instruments of choice, the treble viola da gamba and her voice.

Liverpool-based Ex-Easter Island Head turn the electric guitar on its head to compose physical, droning soundscapes. Their first three records saw them treat the guitar as a percussion instrument and, in their most recent creation, their ensemble of twelve guitarists builds rhythms and patterns, crossing from punk to classical in one leap.

LSO DISCOVERY AT 25 In 2015 LSO Discovery, the Orchestra’s world-leading music education and community programme, celebrates a quarter of a century.

It all began in the late 1980s, when LSO cellist Frances Saunders began to explore how the Orchestra could incorporate education work into its schedule.

In 1990 the LSO appointed its first Head of Education and three years later the increasingly innovative programme was re-named LSO Discovery.

Education and outreach is now an inextricable part of the LSO’s DNA. By including LSO Discovery participants in the highest profile events, such as international tours, the 2012 Olympic Games and concerts with Sir Simon Rattle, the LSO demonstrates its belief in the immutable place of music education as the foundation of all great music-making.

Join us this summer for a series of events celebrating LSO Discovery in all its colour and variety, from emerging composer workshops and a community singing day to Barbican concerts with the full Orchestra.

What makes the LSO’s community and children’s choirs special is that you have to live or work locally to be in them. And yet the singers are also working with amazing LSO professionals.

There’s a lot of soul in our choirs and a lot of energy. It really challenges people’s preconception about classical music being elitist because this is all about embracing everyone, whoever you are, whatever your standard.

Our singers come from very varied home backgrounds, and that can some sometimes make rehearsals a challenge, although you can’t always anticipate what that difference will be.

We can see the visible effect singing has on people’s lives. Singing is a spiritual thing. You can see how important it is to the choir members, what they give up to get to rehearsals, week in, week out. This is a family of musicians with very high expectations. Being a part of the phenomenal outreach department like LSO Discovery is amazing.

Well, this isn’t really outreach, this is about bringing people here to LSO St Luke’s; you might call it ‘in-reach’. And then there’s the excellent opportunities that the LSO offers us. And we get to prepare our choirs for singing with Sir Simon Rattle. It doesn’t get better than that!

Come and explore how gospel music originated from African spirituals and the European hymn tradition.

We’ll sing our way through American soul and end up with contemporary gospel sounds, including music

by Richard Smallwood.

Whether you sing in a local choir, or haven’t sung since school, this is an exciting opportunity to rediscover your hobby. The day will be accompanied by a gospel trio.

Inside Out is a series of free lunchtime outdoor music events during the summer. With a variety of musical styles from across the globe, there’s something for everyone!

LSO DISCOVERY CHOIRS FOR 7- TO 18-YEAR-OLDS

A fantastic path for young people to hone their singing talents, make friends and be part of something big, with weekly rehearsals in the Jerwood Hall and performances at diverse venues across London, including the Barbican.

Now in its twelfth year, the LSO Community Choir is an integral part of LSO St Luke’s. Conducted by David Lawrence, the Choir rehearses in the stunning Jerwood Hall once a week and performs regularly with professionals, including the London Symphony Orchestra.
