“Short film; a medium where minutes and money, institutional support and introspection, are in short supply but that converts these very limitations into their inherent power.

Underfunded but free of the constraints of canon and convention, short film is rightly a breeding ground for vital experimentation - with form, with narrative, with image, the short mutates by necessity. Quick to make and quick to watch, it’s reactive, a contrary little sister to the cumbersome feature, instead the gobshite on the ground fighting the good fight, mouthing off, fists flailing.

The democratisation of short filmmaking hit its peak in the 1980s with DIY ethics sweeping living rooms and the art world, film stock usurped by inexpensive tape and affordable camcorders.

This novel cheapness of making art opened space for experimentation - whether recycling daytime television into politicised Scratch Video as showcased in our Opening Night, or the gentler subversions of documenting an East Germany anticipating the fall of the Berlin Wall (see our 30th anniversary GDR triptych).

We pay tribute to the decade with the music videos of maverick visionary Derek Jarman, an old school, all out Video Nasty screened on its original 35mm, and Club des Femmes’ revisiting of Pratibha Parmar’s seminal document of black, queer resistance, A Place of Rage.

Elsewhere, we look to the legacy of public art, taking up residency on the Air Draft. An inflatable theatre sat atop a repurposed industrial barge, we’re mooring on Hackney Wick’s canal for a programme of film and live performance utilising the structure’s polymorphous shape to full effect. Expect rubber appendages and disturbing plastic people, both on screen (in the works of Rachel MacLean and others) and on stage (Lone Taxidermist), alongside pneumatic-themed docs.

To close, we look both forwards and back, with short films and music celebrating the black British women taking Afrofuturism on into their own legacies and aesthetics.”

Polka Dots & Moonbeams London Story

The Eighties! British artists were young, emboldened and equipped with just a camcorder. Helming a loose festival-wide retrospective of the decade and the tenacity that came to define its makers, we present the formative calling cards of the decade’s graduating class, now established prolific British directors among the industry’s greats.

From the early experiments of Clio Barnard and Andrew Kötting, to the playful parody of Sally Potter, to the thoroughly low budget period drama of Harry Potter’s David Yates, these films are rebellious, rough around the edges and speak to the Eighties’ nurturing of burgeoning creative talent.

We will welcome many of the directors for a post-screening Q&A. 83’.

Born of Thatcherist angst, daytime TV, agitprop and the ascent of the home video recorder, Scratch Video was a British video art movement of the early ‘80s characterised by the splicing together and recontextualization of found footage, churning pop, politic ideologies and VHS into ‘televisual punk rock’. Ultimately finding its way from the gallery walls of the Tate and ICA to the clubs of South London, we’re returning it to the historic ICA theatre for our traditional bop of a festival opener.

In association with LUX, we present an excavation of the genre with original work by the Duvet Brothers, Gorilla Tapes, George Barber, Sandra Goldbacher, Kim Flitcroft, featuring the music of New Order, Joy Division and Cabaret Voltaire. Accompanied by multi-screen projection and live performance from synth supergroup Wrangler, expect an old school Scratch Video affair with big visuals, big dancing and/or a little considered head nodding.

LIVE: WRANGLER Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire), Phil Winter and Benge released their debut album, LA Spark, as Wrangler in 2014, followed by a remix project featuring Mute founder Daniel Miller, Chris Carter (Chris & Cosey), Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) and Scanner.

Mallinder has also curated videos to screen.

VISUALS: DAN CONWAY One of the founding members of Soupa, Conway provides visuals for a range of clients including Deadmau5, Pendulum and Eric Prydz.

LIVE: ELSA HEWITT A prolific producer, songwriter and sound artist, Hewitt’s avant-garde electronics won her the PRS Foundation’s Lynsey de Paul Prize in 2017 after releasing three albums on her own ERH imprint.

VISUALS: SWEATMOTHER Sweatmother experiments with various mediums, including found footage, performance and video, re-evaluating cinematic conventions and exploring alternative narratives to queer identities, feminisms and womxn-identifying representations.

No longer content with land, London Short Film Festival is anchored up for a weekender residency aboard the Air Draft, moored alongside Grow Hackney.

A repurposed industrial barge-turned-inflatable theatre, the Air Draft is designed to float atop Hackney’s waterways hosting performance and play. Inspired by architect Jeffrey Shaw’s “floating city” Ant Farm, we’ve programmed two days of live performance and film, taking the Air Draft’s homage to public art and 6 down the rabbit hole of LSFF’s fascination with the pneumatic. playfulness further Cumbrian musician, costume maker, skin decorator, performer and provocateur Natalie Sharp (Lone Taxidermist) curates cake-sitting and short film, embracing the body’s beauty at its most grotesque and manipulated to its extremes, whilst a programme of archival documentaries look outwards to the interaction of self and space in the inflatables of community arts collectives such as Action Space.

The programme is curated across the weekend in both Grow Hackney and aboard the Air Draft.

Girls Daydream About Hollywood Recently, our cultural consciousness has become suffused with stories of sexual violence - women’s stories that span decades. Finally, we are listening and believing. Yet, largely careless and titillating depictions of rape and sexual violence continue to dominate — ELLE, Nocturnal Animals, Gone Girl… Unvictiming interrogates how we should (re)present sexual violence.

Bringing together largely overlooked short films on the subject, feminist film journal Another Gaze has selected a five decades-spanning series of short films on this subject as seen by women filmmakers. Inspired by the artistry of Bert Haanstra’s Oscar-winning 1958 Dutch short Glas and taking up the discussion of representation from recent feature documentaries A Northern Soul and Sound It Out, this non-fiction programme looks to the humanity of industry, asking questions of class identity and documentary’s legacy of ‘poverty porn’. Seeking to capture the current realities of post-industrial regions and excavate past truths of industry in motion, we will follow with an open discussion, inviting dialogue around the need for authentic and positive representations of industrial and working class communities on screen. Post ‘Cool Britannia’ and broaching the Noughties, a generation of working class male filmmakers emerged redefining the cinematic landscape of the urban inner city and building humanistic narratives of the smalltime gangsters and streetwise top boys in its midst.

Characterised by a mettle and swagger behind and in front of the camera, these newcomer’s short films felt refreshing in their realism and confrontational, unavoidably anchored in identity politics of race and class, tackling the hard-line issues from addiction to police harassment.

With women making up less than 7% of cinematographers in the UK, female DoP collective illuminatrix was founded in 2016 as a go-to resource to discover working women in the field quickly and easily, no excuses.

We turn focus to this chronic underrepresentation and the brilliant women of the illuminatrix roster, looking to the resulting female gaze when women helm the camera in an eclectic cross-section of shorts.

Featuring a healthy handful of festival alumni from across the years, illuminatrix and their DoPs will join us post-screening in Q&A. 78’.

The Shadow of Utopia

In the What I Remember trilogy, Viennese filmmaker Antoinette Zwirchmayr tackles the complexities of her baroque family history over the course of three exquisitely rendered short films. Filmed on 16mm, these films unfold with a miraculous complexity, offering up fragments of memory, confessional testimonies, artifacts and enigmatic recreations that converge around two central figures - her father, a bank robber who fled to Brazil, and her grandfather, one of the most prolific pimps in Salzburg.

It’s with great pleasure we are able to screen these films on 35mm for their UK premiere and to welcome Antoinette for a post-screening Q&A with Selina Roberston (Club des Femmes). 64’.

In the wake of a tumultuous 2018, the #MeToo movement has at long last supplanted sexism into almost every public consciousness. Looking to the uneasy reality of how this shapes the very foundations of a woman’s day-to-day, T A P E present a programme turning focus to street harassment.

From the witty and subversive, to films of a more uncomfortable nature, we examine women’s vulnerability within public spaces, the body politics of occupying space, the male gaze as an exertion of power, why catcalling still happens and if there’s more we can be doing.

Films include work by Muriel D’Ansembourg, Connie Chavez, Kate Hardie, Kate Dolan, Kate Jessop, Connie Van, Jemima Read, Nathan Byron, as well as Buzzfeed virals.

Following the screening, a panel will discuss their own impressions and experiences, including Molly Ackhurst and Kelsey Mohamed of Hollaback, actress Tanya Fear (Catcalling 2.0) and T A P E’s Angie Moneke.

Looking to how D/deaf people negotiate the world around them, moving through society and shaping themselves to pockets of community, this programme takes us from the cities and coasts of England to the refugee camps of the Sahara to the thick greenery of New Zealand. Broken English As the music video exploded at the height of the Eighties, queer iconoclast Derek Jarman found himself something of a bridge between the mainstream and the fringes, taking on commercial directorial work for emerging artists pushing outsider subculture through into the Top 40.

Jarman’s work, from his 1977 polemic on punk Jubilee, was always heavily influenced by the politic charge and aesthetic defiance of music and its makers and in this retrospective, we trace Jarman’s unique visual alchemy through to these oft-forgotten but era-defining gems. Featuring music videos for the likes of The Smiths, Easterhouse, The Mighty Lemon Drops, Pet Shop Boys, Marianne Faithful and Suede.

Join us in the BFI’s Blue Room post screening for a MUBI-hosted Jarman Disco with guest DJs serving the big pop punk of Jarman’s collaborators.

In partnership with the Stuart Hall Foundation, we present a screening and roundtable revisiting and reflecting on academic and activist Stuart Hall’s 1979 televisual essay, It Ain’t Half Racist, Mum. Produced for the BBC’s Open Door series (1973-1983), an experiment in unfiltered access television handing over the airwaves on a Monday evening to marginalized voices, Stuart Hall presents a rigorous deconstruction of the racism - both explicit and more insidious in its subtlety - of the British media from within.

Alongside the original episode, we will screen the moving image work, Don’t Look at the Finger (2017), by artist Hetain Patel which explores, through choreography and sign, how symbols of historical cultural traditions and languages can become blurred and entangled.

The screenings will anchor a wider panel discussion on race, representation and cultural production forty years on since the original BBC broadcast, chaired by Dr Clive Nwonka (LSE).

BUMBLE: THE FEMALE FILM FORCE PREMIERE

Over some forty years, Cosey Fanni Tutti has explored the extremities of sonic and visual language according to the body’s sensory workings and its consumptive image.

Various experimental collectives - COUM Transmission, Throbbing Gristle and, more recently, Carter Tutti - have been counterpointed with her own performative self-imaging. Whether located in the soft porn industry of the late Seventies or private solo actions of the Nineties, Cosey has continued to collapse the personal, experiential and abstract into music and art.

Adopted mediums have been deployed by Cosey as concept and action necessitated and this has historically included film, three of which we will be screening. 60’.

Bumble reveals its five female filmmaking teams in an exclusive screening event. The teams have been fully funded to create their own short film as part of an initiative offering grants to ambitious filmmakers across the UK and Ireland. They have been created by all female teams of writers, directors and producers in a bid to actively address the imbalance within the film industry. Fishing With John John Lurie’s Fishing with John is a charmingly deadpan (mis)adventure where the likes of Tom Waits and Willem Dafoe are coerced into a variety of ill-prepared fishing trips by the now mythically elusive, cult actor-musician-painter Lurie.

Acting as a surreal forebear to the ‘scripted reality’ shows of the Noughties, and pitched somewhere between a Discovery Channel travelogue and a hipsterised Beckett play, Fishing with John is a curiously heartwarming affair, mixing absurd high-stakes drama with laconically droll improvisation in a unique ode to friendship, danger and reckless fishing techniques.

These short works, new and old, remind us another world – one radical – is possible and that queer filmmakers and artists have always been at the forefront of the struggle. Pratibha Parmar’s visionary document of queer feminist Black Power, A Place of Rage (accompanied by its rarely screened experimental short sister, A Poem About My Rights, featuring June Jordan) here meets Adinah Dancyger’s anti-Trump re-up of Zoe Leonard’s poem I Want A Dyke For President performed by Mykki Blanco. To be followed by CDF’s So Mayer and speaker Nazmia Jamal bringing the legacy of A Place Of Rage into the urgent present.

Final girls, freak flags and feminist sensibilities. In association with Underwire Film Festival, we present a retrospective of the curious horrors of Prano Bailey-Bond.

A gal with a taste for gore, raised on Twin Peaks and old school video nasties, Bailey-Bond’s work calls upon an earlier era of lower fi, Mary Whitehouse-condemned slashers blended up with a touch of fairytale to build evocative worlds, deceptively dreamlike in their fusing of a dark cinematic vocabulary and eerie allure.

Announced as one of Screen International’s 2018 Stars of Tomorrow, Prano’s first video nasty-centric feature Censor is currently in the works. We’re excited to screen her preceding short films and showcase a formidable woman carving space in a genre all too sparse of them.

Prano will be in conversation with Anna Bogutskaya (Underwire) following the screening.

This 1982 low-budget horror was caught up in the UK’s Video Nasty scare seized by police for its similarity to other slashers even though originally passed for cinema release.

After a mysterious upstate New York killing, an innocent looking country boy moves into a sleazy hotel near Times Square clutching a wicker basket that contains Belial, the boy’s homicidal Siamese twin! The pair are seeking bloody revenge on the trio of doctors who separated them at birth.

Following the screening we welcome a panel to discuss the legacy of the Video Nasty era, including Carol Topolski (former BBFC examiner), Mike Hewitt (Arrow Films), author and horror critic Kim Newman and Prano Bailey-Bond herself, hosted by Josh Saco (Cigarette Burns Cinema).

Sex is a ubiquitous subject in art, but often falls into tired tropes. Looking to the medium of short form animation, Nobody Ordered Wolves asks how we can create new ways of looking at sex in hopes of finding new ways of thinking about sex, beyond the coy and often pornographic.

Animation creates a unique safe space for women animators to visualise desire, reshape sexuality and say what is otherwise unsayable about bodies brought together, showing sex away from the male gaze. The films in this programme range from the nakedly educational, via the confessional, to the absurd and delightful. Standby for a seminar on the clitoris, that moment when a cartoon teddy realises ‘I like girls’ and a pansexual plasticine softboi - in short, sex and all it can mean to us. 77’.

Wrestling resources from an inimical industry, these works reclaim representation from a hegemony of white faces and the dominance of the white gaze, looking to postcolonial London, the realities of its racism and insularity of class, and the unhomeliness of the migrant experience.

SUPAKINO presents a special time-hopping, short film edition of their turban-themed programming.

After 38 years of existing as a divided country, the first crucial step towards German unification occurred on 9th November 1989 when Berlin opened its checkpoints and people passed freely between East and West for the first time in decades. We commemorate 30 years since this historic moment with three programmes of short films highlighting the dissenting and subversive work made in the German Democratic Republic.

Founded by Dr Claus Löser and Karin Fritzsche, Ex Oriente Lux is a Berlin based archive of 8mm experimental films made in the GDR between the years 1976-1991. Operating outside the ideological confines of the DEFA studio, these films showcase the versatility and creative energy of the artists and filmmakers experimenting on the fringes. Often screened in secret, they depict an East Germany as politically and culturally radical as their western counterparts, with bold explorations of gender, the avant-garde and urban decay. 73’.

In this kaleidoscopic offering of Afrofuturist short works, we’re taken into the orbits of the Cosmic Queens.

Celestial happenings and speculative futures meet the spirituality and innate strength of the black women at the centre of these journeys. We follow them to the uncharted realms of the galaxy, on solo missions through space and time, traversing dreams, memories and mythical pasts. Samir Karahoda

Samir Karahoda programmes the short film program at Dokufest, the largest cultural event in Kosovo and a major film festival in the region. He has curated several programmes for festivals with a specific focus on shorts from the Balkans. He currently lives and works in Prishtina as a freelance photographer and cinematographer. His works have been published in many international media, galleries and festivals.

“There’s an expectation that when putting together competition programmes you’re searching for quote unquote the best, a measure inevitably elusive when factoring in multiple viewpoints. Instead my team and I felt it more vital to emphasise work that ambitiously pushed past the boundaries of conventional classification. Placing focus instead on individuality, we have here curated films that unapologetically explore all the aesthetic, formal and ideological freedoms that the short form has to offer and dismissed arbitrary benchmarks of ‘quality’ such as duration. With this selection I hope to offer up a diverse and unruly, sometimes challenging, hopefully energising, portrait of the world, one that explores beyond the usual Eurocentric bias and taps into fresh images, ideas and sensations.”

Manipulations and montage transport us through MRI scans, Craigslist ads and spam inboxes, with soundscapes built from the churnings of satellites, dipping into Swedish arachnid magic and Ghanaian folklore. We see the return of filmmakers Andrew Kötting and Guli Silberstein, new talent from further afar in Marnie Ellen Hertzler and Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin paying homage to Hitchcock’s Rear Window. 96’. Oska Bright are back at LSFF for their fourth year with a short film screening in a friendly, laid back environment for audiences on the autism spectrum or with sensory disabilities. The programme features a selection of highlights from the Oska Bright archives and suitable entertaining picks from this year’s LSFF programme.

Audiences will fall in love with dogs waiting patiently at polling stations, frogs and goldfish, a gentle introduction to the art of knitting and calming images of seaside erosion.

Whether you choose to or are forced to, sometimes leaving home is the only choice. These shorts are presentations of escape, whether compelled or chosen, but the distinct need to relocate that sense of ‘home’ and take stock is common in these films. Ranging from the whimsical to the painful, traversing from North Korea’s capital to the Swiss Alps, we explore the complexity of what it means to leave or lose that safe place. 82’.

Combined, these films tell altered versions of the news we see everyday. In its capacity as a news source and in its most palatable form, documentary teaches us something. Whether these lessons in themselves are agreeable is beside the point. From the far right buttressing itself in France’s suburbs to corruption unveiled through graffiti in Colombia, these docs are all informative but toy with convention, some playful and others conflicting. 98’.

From the emotional repression of a father-son relationship to the cathartic outlet of warhammer, each of these docs offer space for reflection without judgement and show us the value of giving in to the need to express yourself.
