ROLLER DERBY EXPLAINED HOW THE GAME WORKS A game is made up of a number of individual jams, each lasting up to two minutes. Each of the two teams will put five skaters onto the track at a time: one designated scoring player called the ‘jammer’ who wears a star on her helmet; and four ‘blockers’. One blocker from each team can be designated as the ‘pivot’, wearing a stripe on her helmet. Play begins with the blockers from both teams skating in a mixed formation known as the ‘pack’. The two jammers start behind the pack and must try to get through and out the front - the first to do so earns ‘lead jammer’ status. After this initial pass, the jammers race around the track and try to get through the pack for a second time. This is when they’ll start scoring, earning one point for each opponent that they pass legally and in-bounds. The blockers will be trying to help their jammer to get through the pack and score points whilst simultaneously trying to stop the

other jammer from passing them. Roller derby is very tactical, with offence and defence being played at the same time. The jammers may continue to race around the track and score points for up to two minutes, or until the lead jammer calls off the jam (by repeatedly touching her hands to her hips). When this happens, the referees will blow four short blasts of the whistle before we start over again with the next jam! Like any sport, roller derby has a complex set of rules and strategies. Unsurprisingly though, the team with the most points at the end of the game wins!

PENALTIES Referees communicate penalties with one blow of the whistle, then call out the offending skater by colour and number.

PENALTY BOX

The penalty box is a seated area outside of the track. Skaters sent off for penalties must enter the

penalty box safely by skating in any direction outside the track boundary and must re-enter the track behind the pack once the penalty time (30 seconds) has been served.

SCORING ON SKATERS IN THE BOX A jammer will get a point for an opposing skater who is in the penalty box as soon as she passes one other skater from that team. This ensures that teams don’t miss out on points because an opponent is in the box.

WHEN JAMMERS GO TO THE BOX When a jammer is sent to the penalty box, the opposing team has a huge opportunity to rack up points without giving any away. This is called a ‘power jam’. If both jammers are sent off, the jammer that entered the box first is allowed back on to the track as soon as the second jammer reaches the box.

LONDON ROLLERGIRLS LRG is a skater-ownedand-run amateur roller derby league. LRG currently has four active travel teams having retired our intraleague teams in 2013. All league members are eligible for team selection, and skaters are chosen based on skill, league participation, and attendance. Each squad is currently chosen for a six-month period.

SKATER POSITIONS JAMMER The jammer is usually a fast, agile skater and wears a star on her helmet. The jammer is the only skater who can score points, and she must break through the pack once and lap it before scoring. On their second time through the pack, the jammers score one point for each opponent passed legally and in bounds.

LEAD JAMMER Lead jammer is the first jammer to break through the pack passing all opposing blockers in bounds and without any penalties. As lead jammer she may, at a strategic time, call off the jam to prevent her opponent from scoring more points (by putting her hands on her hips).

PIVOT Each pack can field one pivot, who is a special type of blocker and acts as a kind of leader on the track. The pivot wears a vertical stripe on her helmet, and is the only blocker who can receive a star pass from the jammer.

BLOCKER In addition to the pivot, each team has three blockers on the track. Blockers play vital offensive and defensive roles, helping their jammer get through the pack while simultaneously working together to block the opposing team’s jammer.

LONDON BRAWLING, our ‘A’ team, play against the top teams in the world and compete each year at the end of season playoffs to win a spot at the WFTDA Championships tournament. LONDON BRAWL SAINTS, our ‘B’ team, consists of up to 5 “crossover” London Brawling members, plus 15 more skaters. Brawl Saints compete on a national and international level and are proudly amongst the top 12 teams in Europe. BATTER C POWER, our ‘C’ team, includes up to 5 “crossover” Brawl Saints and can be found playing against the UK and Europe’s up-and-coming leagues. D TEAM… our rising stars of LRG! New for 2019, our ‘D’ team includes up to 5 “crossover” Batter C and will be skating their first bouts this year.

SKATER PROFILES Slaughterhouse Thighs #48 FUN FACT: I am scarily good at recognising faces. So don’t be freaked out if say “Hi, remember me, we had a 45-second conversation about crisps at that party 6 years ago?” THEME TUNE: I’m actually a very good matchmaker. PROUDEST DERBY MOMENT: Proudest derby moment: I’m really happy with how I came up with my name. I’d thought of a couple of options but none sparked joy. Then I was waiting on the jam line to play my first ever game and it just came to me like divine intervention. I love Kurt

Vonnegut and I also like my thighs. It was like when Paul McCartney was convinced he couldn’t have come up with Yesterday because it was too good (it’s not and my name is better). FUN FACTS: Worst derby moment: I sometimes forget I’m not a jammer when I occasionally block. I once tried to ‘eat the baby’ and felt so cool until I got a penalty

for blocking out of play. AMBITION: To live in a coven where we grow our own vegetables and make our own clothes and feel smug about how well prepared we were for the fall of capitalism, same as everyone, really...

Beat-Her-Parker #62

BEST THING ABOUT ROLLER DERBY: The people/community, the laughs and the funny names WORST THING ABOUT ROLLER DERBY: Other people’s sweat PROUDEST DERBY MOMENT: Playing at the World Cup with Windies last year. WORST DERBY MOMENT: Getting caught on a Brawling wall for two whole minutes DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Big hair, big smile, tattoos, spider-man face pain LIKES: Vegan cookies, my team, chocolate (oat) milk, politeness, coffee DISLIKES: Confined spaces, spiders (I know) cilantro, rudeness, gym bro’s

POSITION: Jammer YEARS WITH LRG: 2

AMBITION: To rule the world... jk, to play in another World Cup!
