SCHEDULE Of EVENTS 7.00pm SECOND GAME BRAWLING BRAWL SAINTS vs NOTHING TOULOUSE vs HELLFIRE HARLOTS 10.30pm AFTER PARTY TBC – details announced on the day 5.00pm FIRST GAME

PLEASE RESPECT THE VENUE AND DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN DRINKS TO OUR AFTER PARTY

ATTENTION/DISCLAIMER FLOOR SEATING

PHOTOGRAPHY

Floor seating is available around the edge of the track and we encourage you to sit there for the best view of the action. However there’s a possibility that during the game a skater may fly out of bounds and into the audience.

London Rollergirls does not authorise photography for commercial use without prior written permission. It’s fine to take personal snapshots, but a release form is required for any professional or club photography regardless of its use.

Adults may sit at the hazard tape marking at their own risk.

Please enquire about a photography release form when collecting your wristband.

FANS UNDER 18 MAY NOT SIT OR STAND WITHIN 1 METRE OF THE HAZARD TAPE. Please do not interfere with the game by tripping, grabbing or holding skaters or referees. This creates a dangerous situation for skaters and spectators, and is bad fansmanship! If caught doing this, you will be escorted from the building with no refund.

ROLLER DERBY EXPLAINED HOW THE GAME WORKS A game is made up of a number of individual jams, each lasting up to two minutes. Each of the two teams will put five skaters onto the track at a time: one designated scoring player called the ‘jammer’ who wears a star on her helmet; and four ‘blockers’. One blocker from each team can be designated as the ‘pivot’, wearing a stripe on her helmet. Play begins with the blockers from both teams skating in a mixed formation known as the ‘pack’. The two jammers start behind the pack and must try to get through and out the front - the first to do so earns ‘lead jammer’ status. After this initial pass, the jammers race around the track and try to get through the pack for a second time. This is when they’ll start scoring, earning one point for each opponent that they pass legally and in-bounds. The blockers will be trying to help their jammer to get through the pack and score points whilst simultaneously trying to stop the

other jammer from passing them. Roller derby is very tactical, with offence and defence being played at the same time. The jammers may continue to race around the track and score points for up to two minutes, or until the lead jammer calls off the jam (by repeatedly touching her hands to her hips). When this happens, the referees will blow four short blasts of the whistle before we start over again with the next jam! Like any sport, roller derby has a complex set of rules and strategies. Unsurprisingly though, the team with the most points at the end of the game wins!

PENALTIES Referees communicate penalties with one blow of the whistle, then call out the offending skater by colour and number.

PENALTY BOX

The penalty box is a seated area outside of the track. Skaters sent off for penalties must enter the

penalty box safely by skating in any direction outside the track boundary and must re-enter the track behind the pack once the penalty time (30 seconds) has been served.

SCORING ON SKATERS IN THE BOX A jammer will get a point for an opposing skater who is in the penalty box as soon as she passes one other skater from that team. This ensures that teams don’t miss out on points because an opponent is in the box.

WHEN JAMMERS GO TO THE BOX When a jammer is sent to the penalty box, the opposing team has a huge opportunity to rack up points without giving any away. This is called a ‘power jam’. If both jammers are sent off, the jammer that entered the box first is allowed back on to the track as soon as the second jammer reaches the box.

LONDON ROLLERGIRLS LRG is a skater-ownedand-run amateur roller derby league. LRG currently has four active travel teams having retired our intraleague teams in 2013. All league members are eligible for team selection, and skaters are chosen based on skill, league participation, and attendance. Each squad is currently chosen for a six-month period.

SKATER POSITIONS JAMMER The jammer is usually a fast, agile skater and wears a star on her helmet. The jammer is the only skater who can score points, and she must break through the pack once and lap it before scoring. On their second time through the pack, the jammers score one point for each opponent passed legally and in bounds.

LEAD JAMMER Lead jammer is the first jammer to break through the pack passing all opposing blockers in bounds and without any penalties. As lead jammer she may, at a strategic time, call off the jam to prevent her opponent from scoring more points (by putting her hands on her hips).

PIVOT Each pack can field one pivot, who is a special type of blocker and acts as a kind of leader on the track. The pivot wears a vertical stripe on her helmet, and is the only blocker who can receive a star pass from the jammer.

BLOCKER In addition to the pivot, each team has three blockers on the track. Blockers play vital offensive and defensive roles, helping their jammer get through the pack while simultaneously working together to block the opposing team’s jammer.

LONDON BRAWLING, our ‘A’ team, play against the top teams in the world and compete each year at the end of season playoffs to win a spot at the WFTDA Championships tournament. Brawl Saints compete on a national and international level and are proudly amongst the top 12 teams in Europe. BATTER C POWER, our ‘C’ team, includes up to 5 “crossover” Brawl Saints and can be found playing against the UK and Europe’s up-and-coming leagues. D TEAM… our rising stars of LRG! New for 2019, our ‘D’ team includes up to 5 “crossover” Batter C and will be skating their first bouts this year.

NEWS BRAWLING

Wishing London Brawling the best of luck as they head to Philadelphia to play East Coast Derby Extravaganza (ECDX) to solidify their place at playoffs (the top ranked 28 teams in the world on 30 June will receive an invitation). We love you Brawling we do, oh Brawling we love you!

BRAWL SAINTS

Brawl Saints are going into this game fresh from their win against BBD. Be ready for what is sure to be a closely fought and exciting game against Nottingham Hellfire Harlots, as both teams currently have exactly the same ranking score!

last weekend. Both teams were previously undefeated before this game, but Batter C’s win sees them going to British Champs playoffs, undefeated, as top seed. It’s amazing to see all their hard work in action!

D TEAM

Formed earlier this year, our shiny new D team has elected their captains, Dare Devil and Flash Gorgon. They have been working hard and are ready to take on the world! (or, you know, other roller derby teams.) They’re still searching for the perfect team name, if you have any suggestions we’d love to hear them – either Facebook, Twitter or email: info@londonrollergirls.com

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION WORKSHOPS

We are driven to be the best we can both on and off the track. Last year we formed the Diversity and Inclusion committee to focus on the work we need to do together to become a diverse and inclusive. The committee has recently hosted their first workshop led by Amazing Disgrace, so that we could begin to reflect on the work we need to do as a league.

SKATER PROFILES Jessica Rammit #6

POSITION: Blocker/ Occasional Pivot YEARS WITH LRG: 2 years and a bit LIKES: Carbs, dogs, being an Aunty, rom coms, outdoor swimming, and cider (although am a recent gin convert). DISLIKES: Early mornings, Trump, Brexit and that moment when you realise you made a hard boiled egg when you really wanted a dippy egg for your soldiers. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Long legs and a short body!

PROUDEST DERBY MOMENT: Captaining and playing for Team West Indies at the 2014 World Cup, it was like being in a huge West Indian family and was wonderful! AMBITION: Graduate with a 2:1 (or higher) and get a WFTDA medal!!

FUN FACT: I’ve lived in 6 countries and could technically play for 3 teams in the World Cup.

Lois Swann #004

POSITION: Blocker/ Occasional Pivot YEARS WITH LRG: 1

PREVIOUS LEAGUES: Previous Leagues: Eastbourne Roller Derby, Brighton Roller Derby, Apex Predators Roller Derby LIKES: Disney, doughnuts, musicals, shiny things, napping, foxes, new experiences in general and eating. DISLIKES: Jumping, people being angry, salad, centipedes, the sound writing with chalk makes. AMBITION: Predictable perhaps, but I hope that one day in the future I’ll be good enough to skate with Brawling! That’s why I joined LRG. PROUDEST DERBY MOMENT: Honestly, it was probably when I played my first game for LRG. I first went to see Brawling play in 2011, and it had been my dream to skate with LRG ever since, so getting to play a home game for a team I’d admired for so long, with a bunch of my friends watching was pretty special.
