Introduction

A warm welcome to our new season

Our season begins on 13 October with an afternoon of Russian music. Acclaimed Latvian pianist Reinis Zariņš makes his debut with the Orchestra in Rachmaninoff’s evergreen Second Piano Concerto, followed by Rimsky-Korsakov’s sublime Scheherazade under the baton of Andrew Gourlay.

On 3 November conductor and film music specialist Anthony Weeden leads the Orchestra in a celebration of British cinema featuring iconic pieces from a century of unforgettable films, from Lawrence of Arabia and Brief Encounter to Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Cellist Laura van der Heijden, 2012 BBC Young Musician of the Year, performs Haydn’s Cello Concerto on 19 January alongside beloved Romantic classics, Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture and Brahms’s Fourth Symphony.

Spring 2020 sees the Orchestra delve into a world of storytelling. Highlights include Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Suite and Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture conducted by Matthew Wood on 22 March. Igor Tchetuev completes the programme with Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. French violinist Fanny Clamagirand returns to Eastbourne on 23 February to perform Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, which will be complemented by Dvořák’s joyful Symphony No. 8.

Our season closes on 19 April with a concert dedicated to the music of Beethoven, part of the 250th anniversary celebrations. Matthew Coorey conducts the much-loved ‘Pastoral’ Sixth Symphony, and the incomparable pianist Joanna MacGregor performs the poetic Fourth Piano Concerto.

The makers of Brief Encounter knew what they were doing when they put Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto on the soundtrack.

No composer had a more deeply romantic spirit, or knew how to express it with such opulence and ardour. Critics have called the young Latvian pianist Reinis Zariņš ‘electrifying’: who better to explore the dark passions of this hugely popular Concerto? And then Andrew Gourlay ventures off into the vast, storm-swept landscape of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade – a true Russian epic, filled with some of the 20th century’s grandest and most glorious melodies. Every performance is an adventure.

Film music was never just about Hollywood – and from Lawrence of Arabia to James Bond, Brief Encounter to Four Weddings and a Funeral, British cinema has created its own legends, to utterly unforgettable music. Film music maestro Anthony Weeden introduces a century of great British film scores. The elegance of Murder on the Orient Express, the visionary pre-war sci-fi of Things to Come; the sheer emotion of the Love theme from Romeo and Juliet: these are the soundtracks of all our lives: and you’ll never hear them played with more energy or flair.

When Johannes Brahms wrote his fourth and final symphony, he wasn’t going gently into the night: it begins with a sigh, but ends with a tempest. Filled with heartfelt melody, it’s one of those rare tragedies that leave you feeling uplifted, and conductor Thomas Blunt knows how to make it sing – just as the brilliant young British cellist Laura van der Heijden will find all the elegance, energy and wit in Haydn’s sunny Cello Concerto. But we begin with music’s most famous boat-trip, as the young Felix Mendelssohn sets sail for the Hebrides.

You can almost taste the sea-spray.

A quiet hymn, a flurry of birdsong, a dancing rhythm – and Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony bursts into sunny, irrepressible life. Dvořák might have written more famous symphonies, but he never wrote a happier one. So it’s perfect for conductor Ben Glassberg, the new music director of Glyndebourne On Tour, and he’ll bring out all the drama of Mozart’s Magic Flute Overture too.

In between, lose yourself amid the fire and ice of Sibelius’s atmospheric Violin Concerto.

Performed tonight by the award-winning French violinist Fanny Clamagirand, it’s classical music’s very own slice of Scandinavian noir.

When Beethoven wanted to relax, he headed for the countryside, and there’s still no happier, fresher or more gloriously tuneful celebration of nature’s wonders than his lovely ‘Pastoral’ Symphony. But there’s more to it than just folkdances and birdsong: this is music to soothe the soul. The Fidelio Overture, meanwhile, stirs the blood – and Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto shows this most universal of all composers at his most tender and profound. The great British pianist Joanna MacGregor finds something new in everything she plays; together with conductor Matthew Coorey she’ll get straight to the heart of this very special Beethoven anniversary celebration.

Tickets can be paid for by cash, credit/debit card. There is a £1 booking fee for each ticket purchased. This is included in the advertised ticket prices. There is a £1 charge for postage.
