Grieg – ‘In The Hall of the Mountain King’ from Peer Gynt In this piece Grieg evokes a cave full of trolls, gnomes and goblins. Can you hear the ugly, hairy trolls creeping up on Peer, getting faster and faster? Luckily he escapes by the skin of his teeth – phew!
A few points to note for your comfort and enjoyment:
Berlioz – ‘Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath’ from Symphonie Fantastique Berlioz uses lots of special effects to set the scene for a gathering of witches: violins bouncing the wooden part of their bows to create bubbling cauldron sounds, the sound of a funeral bell and outbursts of musical laughter.
PHOTOGRAPHY is not allowed in the auditorium. LATECOMERS will only be admitted to the auditorium if there is a suitable break in the performance.
Saint-Saëns – Danse Macabre The story of Death (played by a violinist) making skeletons rise from their graves on Halloween and dance to his sinister tune.
RECORDING is not permitted in the auditorium without the prior consent of Southbank Centre. Southbank Centre reserves the right to confiscate video or sound equipment and hold it in safekeeping until the performance has ended.
Mussorgsky – A Night on the Bare Mountain This piece conjures up a wild and terrifying party with lots of dancing. When the sun comes up, party time is over and all the creepy creatures vanish! You might have heard this one on the soundtrack to the Disney film Fantasia.
MOBILES, PAGERS AND WATCHES should be switched off before the performance begins (or the Gizzardgulper will get you...)
