INTRODUCTION

The Human Element Leadership & Management course at the Operational Level (HELM O) is designed for Junior officers & engineers on board ships worldwide to familiarise them with critical elements relating to the globality and diversity in the maritime & shipping industry.

The non-technical nature of knowledge and understanding to be gained in this course are essential for all attendees to grasp the sensitive cultural and behavioural differences within the shipboard and shore-based linked diverse portfolios. OBJECTIVES

By the end of the HELM O course, delegates will be able to:

Distinguish Leadership from Management: Clearly define the distinctions between leadership and management, understanding the unique attributes of each.

Practical Leader Attributes: Recognize the essential attributes of an effective leader, enabling participants to nurture leadership qualities within themselves.

Managerial Requirements: Identify the key traits and skills needed to excel as an effective manager in the maritime industry.

Best Practices in Leadership and Management: Gain in-depth knowledge of best practices in leadership and management, drawing from industry standards and expertise.

Adaptive Leadership Styles: Identify and select appropriate leadership and management styles adaptable to diverse maritime scenarios.

COURSE OUTLINE

Day 1

Delegates throughout day one topics will be able to:

Identify good practices in shipboard human resource management.

Identify the importance of the human element in shipboard operations.

Apply the underpinning knowledge of related international maritime conventions and recommendations, national regulations, and codes of practice and guidelines covered in other mandatory units when controlling the ship's operation and care for persons on board at the operational level.

Apply task and workload management elements, including planning, coordination, location and prioritisation of human and physical resources when controlling the ship's operation and caring for persons on board.

Day 2

Apply effective resource management techniques about:

Allocation, assignment and prioritisation of resources.

Use of effective communications on board and ashore, including.

Relevant use of verbal and non-verbal communication.

Identifying challenges to communications.

Developing strategies to prevent communication failures.

Identifying cultural aspects that can hinder the acquisition of a shared understanding of messages communicated.

Day 3

Delegates on Day 3 will be able to manage fatigue and stress about:

Causes and effects of fatigue.

Causes and effects of stress.

Relation between fatigue and stress.

Identifying signs and symptoms of anxiety and fatigue and Developing management strategies to prevent stress and fatigue from affecting safety.

Contribute to shipboard training, learning, assessing and developing human potential about:

1. Formal and informal education.

2. Learning from mistakes.

3. Continuous professional development and Shipboard training, knowledge, coaching, mentoring and assessment
