INTRODUCTION

The Human Element Leadership & Management course at the Management Level (HELM M) is designed for Senior ranks Chief officers & engineers, Masters - on board ships worldwide to upgrade their proficiency with critical elements relating to the globality and diversity in the maritime & shipping industry.

The practical training and case studies introduced allow those decision-making ranks to lead & manage their crew and teams towards smoother operations in such risky & challenging work-based environments. The ship/shore communication loop is also stressed in this HELM M level to facilitate a mutually inclusive flow of information. Apply the principles and practice of decision-making while:

Taking account of the situation and of the risk assessment.

Identifying and generating options.

Using creative problem-solving strategies.

Applying lateral thinking strategies.

Selecting a course of action.

Evaluating outcome effectiveness.

Leading and managing teams, including:

Considering team experiences.

Recognising team potential and limitations.

Optimising the skills and abilities of the group.

Leading multi-cultural teams effectively.

Lead and manage the development, implementation and oversight of standard operating procedures.

Identify the principles and good practices in shipboard training, learning, coaching, mentoring, assessment and developing shipboard personnel.

Day 4

This day is for realistic case studies simulated topics are not restricted to the following:

Dangers of fatigue and stress. Prevention of effects.

Use Project Management as an aid to decision-making.

Management Game.

Role Play.

Culture sensitivity.

Day 5

Delegates to prepare Feedback/reflective presentations.

Presentation Group Assessment.

Written Assessment.
