INTRODUCTION

This course covers goods in package form and dry cargoes in bulk including dangerous substances and related cargo handling gear and equipment. Subjects such as, loading and discharging, stowage, segregation, ventilation and general safety precautions are covered. This five (5) days training course is supported by a competent and experienced training staff and best facilities is open to those being trained to serve as masters and deck officers on ships engaged on near-coastal voyages or those on internal waters.

OBJECTIVES

Demonstrating the knowledge of the principles and practices applicable to safe carriage of cargo On completion of this course you should be able to safely handle, stow and secure different cargoes. describe cargo handling and securing equipment give an account of requirements regarding stowage and securing of cargo on board ships be able to use data based cargo loading program calculate the effect of cargo and cargo operations on the ship´s draft, trim and stability be able to apply international rules, codes and standards regarding the safe handling, stowage, securing and transport of goods at sea

Principles and practice of safe handling, stowage and carriage of cargo

Day 2

Regulations Governing Carriage of Cargo and Cargo Gear

International regulations pertaining to the carriage of timber deck cargoes

National and international regulations pertaining to the carriage of grain cargoes

National regulations governing the carriage of livestock

Requirements as per Marine Orders Part 32 with regard to cargo handling

Day 3

Safe Handling, Stowage and Securing of Cargo

Hold and tank preparation procedures for the reception of various cargoes

The methods of de-odorising and fumigating holds

Methods of handling and stowage of cargo using machinery

Importance of cargo securing

Dunnage - its types and functions

Day 4

Safe Carriage of Imo Dangerous Cargo

Safely handle, stow and carry dangerous goods

Terminology used in the carriage of dangerous goods

Classification and marking of dangerous goods

Precautions that should be taken during the loading, carriage and discharge of dangerous goods.

The IMDG Code and its contents.

Safety precautions and procedures during cargo operations as per Marine Orders Part 41

Temperature control of reefer cargoes
