LY TALENTED EFG London Jazz Festival showcases talent and emerging jazz artists and this year’s festival is no exception. Showcasing over 50 performances from Serio u sly Talen ted musicians, including recent Take Five participants such as Nubya Garcia, Camilla George, and Rob Luft – artists at the forefront of the current British jazz scene – plus established figures from our earlier programmes like Seb Rochford and Phronesis.

Making jazz accessible to a wider audience is vital to the festival, with free performances and a wildly successful programme of Learning and Participation events, such as Jazz for Toddlers and rising star Cherise Adams-Burnett’s speciallycommissioned family show Evelyn & the Yellow Birds.

Royal Academy of Arts / Benjamin West Lecture Theatre 6.30pm In response to the RA’s exhibition of Schiele and Klimt, Club Inégales revisit the cauldron of early 20th century Vienna, in a performance that begins with Schoenberg and travels into a wild, contradicted avant-garde that saw the beginnings of jazz.

Guy Barker’s 42-piece orchestra will provide the setting for a starstudded clutch of vocalists, in a spectacular celebration of the singer and the song, with guests including Allan Harris, Anthony Strong, Deva Mahal, Laila Biali, Lisa Stansfield and Zara McFarlane.

Live at Zédel, Soho 7pm An intimate evening celebrating the life of one of the most significant Black figures in 20th century entertainment - iconic singer, actor and activist, Lena Horne.

PizzaExpress Jazz Club 7pm & 10pm Pianist Christian Sands toured the world with Christian McBride and has been hailed as a rising star by Wynton Marsalis – here with his trio he plays material from his latest album Reach on Mack Avenue.

Borderline, Soho 7.30pm A rare London show from Soft Machine, featuring three of the group’s 1970s era members: guitarist John Etheridge, bass player Roy Babbington and drummer John Marshall, joined by multiinstrumentalist Theo Travis.

DAVE DOUGLAS: UPLIFT

Cadogan Hall 7.30pm Pianist Tord Gustavsen is joined by bassist Sigurd Hole and drummer Jarle Vespestad playing music from his new ECM album The Other Side.

Elina Duni, whose fiercely individual voice infuses jazz and cultural roots, joins forces with guitarist Rob Luft.

Deptford Town Hall 7.30pm 21 years on from their first performances with Butch Moms, the LIO explore the challenge of largescale group improvisation in the Grade II-listed council chambers.

STEVE TAYLOR BIG BAND EXPLOSION

Ziggy’s World Jazz Club, Enfield 7.30pm Powerhouse drummer Steve Taylor and the Big Band Explosion perform exhilarating music and songs with their trademark style.

PUNCH BROTHERS

Barbican 7.30pm Formed by mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile after his previous band, the multi award-winning Nickel Creek went on hiatus, Punch Brothers have carved a niche as a band bringing bluegrass into the 21st century. They will be playing material from their latest Nonesuch album All Ashore.

Southbank Centre / Queen Elizabeth Hall 7.30pm Fearless trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas brings together legendary bassist and producer Bill Laswell, guitarist Mary Halvorson, saxophonist Jon Irabagon and a band of like-minded spirits to reflect his commitment to positive action.

Kings Place / Hall One 8pm Iraqi-American trumpeter, santur player, vocalist and composer Amir ElSaffar and his 17 piece ensemble create an ecstatic fusion of Middle Eastern music and traditional jazz. A UK debut of perhaps the most fascinating new group in today’s transglobal music.

ETHAN IVERSON RESIDENCY PART 1: RAISING HELL WITH HENRY PURCELL

Kings Place / Hall Two 8pm Following a decade as pianist and composer with The Bad Plus, Ethan Iverson expands horizons with a Kings Place residency that reflects his fascination with the twists and turns of British music.

The muse of Henry Purcell acts as the stimulus for this first night - a series of collaborations with a new wave of British improvisers – Brigitte Beraha, Kim Macari, Olie Brice, and the Lume saxophone team of Cath Roberts and Dee Byrne.

Church Of Sound, Clapton 8.30pm One of the great Coltraneinfluenced tenor saxophonists, Billy Harper tasted greatness early, playing on Gil Evans’ Svengali and making his own first album for the legendary Strata-East label. This concert will bring him together with a London quartet and choir.

The Other Palace Studio, Westminster 8pm Bringing the sounds of the Swing era back to life with the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman in this energetic show.

Royal Albert Hall / Elgar Room 8pm Sonic Brew is led by pianist and composer Alex Curtis, performing music from forthcoming album Patterns, as well as arrangements from artists including The Police and The Beatles.

THE EGYPTIAN JAZZ PROJEKT: HARFOUSH BAND

Rich Mix, Shoreditch 8pm The Harfoush Jazz Band, founded by jazz vocalist Ahmed Harfoush, bring a new sound to jazz through arrangements inspired by 1950s Egyptian and American songs.

SEVEN EYES WITH RANDOLPH MATTHEWS AND NATACHA ATLAS

PizzaExpress Live, Holborn 8.30pm Singer Natacha Atlas curates three nights for the ‘Selected’ concert series. Tonight she presents Seven Eyes, a duo of guitarist Paulo Vinícius and vocalist Tanya Wells, with Randolph Matthews and Natacha Atlas herself.

70 years on from the HMT Empire Windrush’s arrival in Essex, British/ Trinidadian poet, novelist, and musician Anthony Joseph brings together an array of musicians and artists to celebrate the cultural history of the Caribbean diaspora in the United Kingdom.

The month-long series of film, music and literature events culminates in this gala concert, which will include the debut of a newly commissioned Windrush Suite by saxophonist/ composer Jason Yarde, performed by Anthony and a pan-Caribbean ensemble comprising a who’s who of the British jazz, Caribbean music, and spoken word scenes – including legendary calypso artists Calypso Rose, Mighty Sparrow and rhythm poet Brother Resistance.

She returns following her previous sold out show at the Festival, when her first Blue Note album Soul Eyes was released – since then, she’s toured with Gregory Porter and recorded her second album Indigo, out this autumn.

by Ethan and Laura – join Ethan in an exploration of the art of the composers who define an intrinsically British approach to jazz – from Stan Tracey, Joe Harriott and Tubby Hayes, to Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor and Django Bates.

To set the scene, prior to the concert Ethan interviews one of the most perceptive of today’s writers on music, Richard Williams, about the background to this concert; a live edition of Ethan’s blog, Do the Math.

JEFF GOLDBLUM & THE MILDRED SNITZER ORCHESTRA

Cadogan Hall 7.30pm Not many people know that Jeff Goldblum plays a mean jazz piano, in addition to starring in Jurassic Park, Independence Day and The Fly, where he provides that uniquely wry, charming and unpredictable edge. He formed his band The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra in LA and they play loose, improvised versions of jazz standards.

JUDI JACKSON

Southbank Centre / Purcell Room 7.45pm Opening for Mavis Staples shaped her as a jazz singer, and her first track was Only Love with Snarky Puppy. After her critically acclaimed EP Blame It On My Youth, her album Live In London is released this autumn.

Southbank Centre / Royal Festival Hall 8pm The undisputed queen of fado returns with a sensational new album just called Mariza. Born in Africa, brought up in Lisbon, she draws on an awareness of other musics from the blues to tango, while loving the fado tradition.

Kings Place / Hall Two 8pm Composer, bandleader and flautist Jamie Baum is a rare talent, amassing an impressive series of awards and commissions over the past two decades. She brings her acclaimed septet to the UK for the first time, to perform Bridges, an extended suite of music inspired by her fascination with world sacred musics.

Stanley Clarke’s bass pyrotechnics burst onto the scene with Chick Corea’s Return to Forever. Sampled by everyone from Jay-Z to Nas to The Beastie Boys, he composed the genre-defining soundtrack to Boyz N The Hood.

Post-Miles, Herbie Hancock formed The Headhunters to create a concept of space funk that remains at the heart of today’s band, still fired by original members Bill Summers, Paul Jackson and Mike Clark.

Audio Network commissioned James to record a beautifully cinematic album with orchestra at Abbey Road, and Soundtrack from Electric Black is the result. Combining the influences of Lalo Schifrin and Oliver Nelson in his own very distinctive way, it is beautifully cinematic and dramatic, with a great mix of Hammond-driven funk and glorious strings – the Festival is delighted to be premiering this new album.

Learning & Participation Our Learning & Participation Programme offers anyone and everyone new ways to engage with our festival.

Whether you’re a musician looking to perform, a budding young journalist, or a family who’d like to make music together, there’s something for everyone.

On Sunday 18 November we are running a whole host of participatory activities to get involved with.

Blues and Roots Ensemble will be leading a new mass participation piece, Jazz Experiments. At two rehearsals in the autumn and a performance on The Clore Ballroom, Southbank Centre, participants of all ages and abilities will work with the group to explore the history of jazz and collective improvisation, inspired by Charles Mingus. Upstairs at Southbank Centre we are hosting a Free Improvisation Workshop for Women, marking our commitment to addressing the gender imbalance within jazz, led by incredible improvising saxophonist Caroline Kraabel. Also taking place on Sunday 18 November, our Serious Sing workshop, led by phenomenal jazz singer Emily Dankworth, is a great opportunity to develop your vocal skills, hosted at Kings Place.

Over both festival weekends The Write Stuff, our free programme delivered in partnership with Jazzwise magazine, will give emerging journalists aged 18-25 a great opportunity to hear from industry insiders and professional journalists, get tips on their own writing, have work published and see a whole bunch of gigs!

As well as activities for grown ups, there are plenty of opportunities across the festival for little ones.

Our sell-out Jazz for Toddlers workshops return, this year led by saxophonist Sue McKenzie and double bass player Una MacGlone. The artists will create a fun world of music and movement for families to enjoy at four venues across London.

This year’s brand new family show is led by rising jazz star, singer Cherise Adams-Burnett and her band. Her show Evelyn & The Yellow Birds will take families on a journey from the Caribbean to England, exploring carnival and the evolution of jazz. Catch the show at the Southbank Centre on Saturday 17 November, and Kings Place on Sunday 25 November. If you’d rather learn about music as an audience member, there are plenty of opportunities to do so.

Another show giving us insight into the world of jazz is Way in to the Way Out, where audiences can find out more about the world and influences of two musicians. For this year’s festival, Kim Macari and Raymond MacDonald will explore the experimental, giving us an introduction to graphic scores. This show will take place in the Queen Elizabeth Foyer at the Southbank Centre on Saturday 24 November.

Catch more emerging talent at our Next Generation Takes Over showcase: a platform for the best future jazz talent from London and beyond.

Taking place over 2 days, this event will include performances from ArtsTrain, Camden Music Hub, Classical Meets Jazz, Guildhall’s (Im)Possibilities, Julian Joseph Jazz Academy, Wandsworth Music Hub and Youthsayers. Many of these groups will be working with exciting jazz artists to create new repetoire. You can catch them on Barbican FreeStage (Level G) on Saturday 24 and Southbank Centre’s The Clore Ballroom on Sunday 25 November.

During the Festival, and throughout the year, Serious is committed to ensuring that music is accessible to all. Alongside many of our participatory events being free of charge, we also run Serious New Audiences, a ticket scheme for groups who may experience cultural or economic barriers when accessing our live concerts.

The Festival’s producers Serious have been helping artists build sustainable careers for over fourteen years now through our Seriously Talented suite of programmes. These talent development programmes have collectively supported over 200 artists to date through residencies and mentoring which offer them an opportunity to develop the necessary skills and connections to thrive in a fast-paced industry.

At this year’s Festival, 37 Seriously Talented artists will showcase their talents. The first night alone features Zara McFarlane in our glitzy opening gala Jazz Voice, Elina Duni and Rob Luft in a joint bill with Tord Gustavsen at Cadogan Hall, plus Nathaniel Facey, Laura Jurd, Randolph Matthews and Olie Brice as part of club line-ups across London.

Music & Migration

Jazz has always been a global language.

Its genesis lies in the maelstrom of African and European cultures in 19th century America – and it has continued to evolve throughout its history, whilst retaining its essential qualities of groove, improvisation and creative dialogue between the individual voice and group interplay.

In the 21st century, jazz reacts to a changing world – themes that lie at the heart of this year’s Festival, which explores how jazz has created its own narrative, interacting with the cultural communities that enrich today’s Britain.

Look no further than Anthony Joseph’s response to the Windrush generation. Anthony brings the insight of a performing artist who is also a storyteller and historian to a story that continues to inspire the creative life of the UK. The result – a fascinating mix of music, film, spoken word and history taking place around the city, with the focal point a Barbican concert that brings jazz together with the stars of calypso, reggae and dancehall.

As the Windrush represents one journey, other performances in the Festival reflect the international movement of people, especially resonant today.

The Iraqi/American trumpeter Amir ElSaffar’s Rivers of Sound Orchestra comes to the UK for the first time, exploring the juncture between jazz and music of the Middle East – a reflection on a region in turmoil and a culture’s struggle for survival.

Ian Shaw’s concert with the Citizens of the World Choir brings together a group of refugees, asylum seekers and campaigner – many of whom Ian met whilst volunteering in the refugee camps of Northern France. The musical common denominators beneath different ancient belief systems lie at the core of Jamie Baum’s Bridges, with Jewish, Maqam and South Asian music a lingua franca that eradicates boundaries.

Yet another journey is that taken by the artists who left their homes to escape South Africa’s apartheid regime – the immense legacy of Hugh Masekela, who died at the beginning of this year, and whose heartfelt relationship with British audiences included some wonderful Festival concerts, is celebrated in a concert that features some of his closest South African musical colleagues; whilst Abdullah Ibrahim connects the South African cadences and rhythms of his band Ekaya with the young American trumpeter Keyon Harrold.

JazzWorks: Helping Jazz Flourish A day of discussions and shared insight for everyone working in, or interested in working in, the music industry.

JazzWorks, Saturday 24 November, is EFG London Jazz Festival’s new day dedicated to discussion and debate on the some of the most important topics in the industry at the moment. As the UK’s largest celebration of the genre, we believe in providing opportunities at the Festival that support the development of the industry and those who work in it and support it. This belief is at the heart of our yearround, on-going commitment to developing talent by offering the tools and opportunities artists need to progress in their careers.

We’ve invited some of the leading partners in the industry to share their thoughts and spark discussion and debate throughout the day.

Hear from key figures in the creative sector who are directly involved in promoting inclusivity of all kinds through their work, and how their strategies and approaches might be applied in jazz and the music industry more widely.

This is a chance to network with organisations and professionals willing to share their advice and guidance about a broad range of routes to career progression, including available services and funding streams within the industry.

THE JAZZ LINE

By examining the future pipeline of jazz, this session looks to the current scene and the various ways we can maintain its ongoing vitality. The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music will share findings from their Music Commission report and how this influences lifelong learning, as well as further discussion on the relationship between music education and careers in the industry.

In addition to these sessions, JazzWorks will feature showcase performances on the Clore Ballroom from the emerging talent studying at a range of conservatoires and music colleges.

The day also coincides with the BBC Young Jazz Musician live finals which take place that evening at Queen Elizabeth Hall (see listings for ticket information).

What’s New

Jazz is an artform that evolves constantly, and so must the EFG London Jazz Festival.

From Anthony Joseph’s Windrush Celebration to our first foray into the EartH, Hackney Arts Centre, this year marks a number of significant firsts across the festival programme and a reflection of the vibrant, ever-changing, and diverse jazz scene in London and beyond.

London has a vast array of unique venues dotted throughout the city and this year the festival will explore some very new territory.

The borough of Hackney has been home to some of the most progressive music making in the city, and now with the newlyopened EartH, Hackney Arts Centre – a beautifully converted old cinema and Turkish ballroom – it has a sizeable venue to match its musical output.

In Chicago X London we recognise that scene by bringing together some of the most important artists like Nubya Garcia to emerge from it in collaboration with Total Refreshment Centre – another Hackney-based organisation that has been so influential in enabling emerging jazz artists to flourish.

Meanwhile the festival’s club programme incorporates even more of the venues that reflect the riches of the grassroots scene as well as bringing an international dimension to the city all year round. Café OTO returns to the Festival with a two-day residency with American trumpeter Jaimie Branch, Church of Sound present their first show in the Festival with Billy Harper’s Quintet performing in the glorious St James The Great with a choir. Other new venues and promoters such as Baba Yaga’s Hut, Corsica Studios, and Ghost Notes also join the programme, and a range of producers bringing artists from across the globe to one of the festival’s favourite venues, Rich Mix. As ever, new work by artists from Serious’ talent development programmes forms a core component of the programme: Camilla George presents material from her new album with an 8-piece ensemble, Elina Duni and Rob Luft present their new duo project not once but twice, Lauren Kinsella debuts her new trio with Tom Challenger and Dave Smith, and most significantly the first artist on our new Giant Steps programme Anthony Joseph’s celebration of the Windrush generation, amongst many other artists from the Seriously Talented pool premiering new work.

Altogether these new ventures, commissions, and collaborations reflect today’s ever-changing scene while offering a glimpse into the future of a hugely diverse jazz landscape. So take a chance on something you haven’t experienced before – be it an artist, venue, or an entirely new musical direction. You won’t regret it.
