Strand, London WC2R 1LA

We are pleased to announce our continuing participation in Collect, the Crafts Council’s international art fair for contemporary objects. It is one of the world’s most influential and prestigious showcases for contemporary craft and design. We are proud to be contributing, by highlighting glass as a flourishing medium for artistic self expression.

This year, we are delighted to present an exceptional lineup of glass artists, including the debut of Tomáš Brzon. His amazing works join masterful creations by renowned makers, Bruno

Romanelli, Colin Reid, Peter Layton, Sabrina Cant, Dr Heike Brachlow and Louis Thompson. Each artist brings their unique perspective to this extraordinary medium, demonstrating its dynamic possibilities.

Peter Layton

At 87, Peter Layton remains one of the world's oldest, actively practising glass artists. His London Glassblowing Studio and Gallery nurtures emerging and established talents while cultivating audiences for this relatively undiscovered medium.

Originally from Bradford and a Central School of Art ceramics graduate, Peter discovered the “new” art of glassblowing while teaching in the US, establishing his first Thames-side studio in the 1960s. There, he pioneered revivals of historic iridising techniques.

Throughout the 1980s, Peter, then Chair of British Artists in Glass, represented the UK at major international events. His two-metre Pyramid at Czechoslovakia's “Glass Olympics” was a celebrated triumph. He has exhibited globally, authored publications, initiated the Contemporary Glass Society and completed large-scale commissions. Now, based on Bermondsey Street for almost 50 years, Peter continues to introduce contemporary glass art to new audiences, while persistently advancing his own restless, creative practice.

Tim Rawlinson

Tim Rawlinson an internationally renowned glass artist studied Ceramics and Glass at Buckinghamshire New University, having previously studied Architecture at Brighton University. Graduating in 2011, he exhibited his degree work at New Designers. Here, he met Peter Layton for the first time and was subsequently invited to London Glassblowing for work experience. Tim’s work has been featured in major European exhibitions and leading American galleries. He has been an invaluable member of the team, setting up and managing the cold studio.

Tim creates highly polished glass surfaces to manipulate the enchanting interplay between the material and light, making this dance the driving force behind his expression. Recent experiments with reactive pigments and powders infuse his works with a painterly texture. Inspired by 1960s liquid light projections, he employs glass powders to create dynamic colour movements, distorting the hues and textures within his work.

Through this skilful manipulation and innovative portfolio of techniques, Tim produces captivating works that mesmerise with their luminous, transcendent qualities.

Anthony Scala

Anthony Scala's fascination with glass started at the age of eight after visiting London Glassblowing. Though initially studying Architectural Model Making, he later interned with Peter Layton, igniting his career as a glass artist. With 20 years of experience working with glass, and renowned for his exceptional precision, Anthony has become a highly regarded practitioner in the field of coldworking.

Over the years, Anthony developed a signature style influenced by architecture, mathematics and physics. Enthralled by light and optical illusions, he pieces together refractive glass components to mystify viewers. "Glass is unpredictable. Its ability to bend light keeps me making work - the unexpected is captivating," he explains.

Anthony's unique and highly technical skill, made him the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious Glass Sellers’ Award at the age of 27. His optically-engaging sculptures exploit perception through meticulously constructed, handmade refractive elements that seemingly warp three-dimensional space. "Optical illusion reminds us reality is based on sensory input", Anthony notes, creating works that challenge viewers' visual understanding.

Anthony has now gone on to the RCA to complete an MA in Ceramics and Glass.

Bruce Marks

Bruce has been a glassmaker since 2001, He completed his Master’s Degree at the University for the Creative Arts at Farnham in 2010.

Bruce Marks was bitten by the glass bug when he first discovered lampworking. Intent on becoming a glassblower, Bruce introduced himself to Peter Layton in 2001 and spent a number of years assisting at London Glassblowing before becoming the Studio Manager and Peter’s principal colourist, helping him test and explore a myriad of colour applications.

Birds, an ongoing series, has been hugely successful and its evolution has attracted an avid and enthusiastic public following. Bruce has achieved deceptively simple abstract forms, which allude to bird-like shapes. A longtime admirer of Brancusi, Bruce envies the sculptor’s ability to capture the essence of his subject, creating a purity of form with minimal detail, whilst projecting profound presence. Over the years the Birds have become more elegant.

Bruno Romanelli

Bruno Romanelli is an established and highly successful artist, who has specialised in the technique of lost wax glass casting for over 30 years. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, symmetry, balance, precision and harmony are underlying themes in the work, as is the control of light and colour through combining the key material qualities of opacity, transparency and translucency. The apparent simplicity of his sculptures belies the complexity of their process and realisation.

Bruno manipulates glass to capture and explore the dynamic relationship between light and colour through the lens of geometric forms. Menkib is a direct result of this exploration, with geometry, balance, and symmetry serving as its core principles. He strives to create works that are both complex and visually harmonious, inviting the viewer to engage with the subtle nuances of the material.

Nell Beale, known as Coucou Manou, graduated in 1994 from an HND Design course. She became a self-employed furniture maker, creating commissioned pieces for private clients, architects, and interior designers. In 2012, she launched her collection at the London Design Festival, blending traditional furniture-making skills with modern CNC technology.

Nell’s work has been featured in publications like Elle Decoration and the Sunday Times, and her designs have been stocked in Heals and Futon Company.

Now based near Aix-en-Provence, Nell’s most recent Wonderland collection, draws inspiration from her environment, with the initial spark of an idea coming from the wooded valley that her home overlooked, as well as her love of folk and Naive Art. She uses techniques not dissimilar to sgraffito and intaglio, and normally used with clay, to carve and incise onto her favoured material, valchromat. She replaces the CNC router used in her previous collections, with a hand held carving tool.

David Patchen

David Patchen is a well-known and prolific American glass artist. Born and raised in New York, he transitioned from a corporate marketing career to become a full-time artist in 2001. Now based in the San Francisco Bay Area, David’s intricate glass sculptures are renowned for their vibrant colours, complex patterns, and meticulous craftsmanship.

In 2017, he was a guest artist at the prestigious Corning Museum of Glass, and more recently, his work was featured in Elton John's highly publicised auction. David’s dedication to pattern-making and technical virtuosity results in mesmerising sculptural expressions of light and colour, showcasing his immense skill and cementing his status as one of the most influential glass artists in the USA.

Part of the Ellipse series, this work uses the murrine technique to create windows of moss and aquamarine with threads of indigo. Inspired by colour and detail, David uses each of his creations as a study of contrasting dense detail with bands of transparent windows in both contrasting and complimentary colours. He injects motion to this detailed Ellipse through the subtle twist in the spiral pattern. This is created by switching the pattern from the initial blow pipe to another at a right angle, placing the vanishing point on the face of the piece.

Aquamarine Ellipse

Davide Penso’s career began working as a photographer, but as a Venetian-born resident of Murano it was inevitable that he was captivated by the world of glass. Since 1992, his primary motivation has been to create beautiful glass jewellery and sculptures, using flame-worked techniques. Alongside this, he also runs the Murano Glass Academy, inspiring people to learn the traditional techniques of glass bead making.

Davide’s Seaweed sculptures are a reflection of over thirty years experience in glass making. As a keen diver, he is inspired by the flow of water. His tranquil and delicate sculptures mimic the movement of seaweed as it floats. The Seaweed components are blown in Murano glass in vibrant colours, which are inserted into a recycled Venetian wooden base.

Elliot Walker

Elliot Walker, the sought-after British glass artist and winner of Netflix's Blown Away Season 2, creates visually breathtaking still life compositions in glass. He draws inspiration from an eclectic range of sources - abandonment, the human form, environmental catastrophes, and Old Master paintings. He explores symbolism and perception through meticulously crafted vessels.

His glass fruit and objects, though glossy and vividly coloured, appear inedible and detached from utility, ironically commenting on societal concepts of beauty and function. Elliot experiments with surprising colour combinations and techniques, like using radioactive uranium glass for skeletal forms.

With each innovative still life narrative, the artist tests the boundaries of his skills while delighting viewers with works described as "extremely delicate" yet “solidly impactful”. Elliot’s unique glass sculptures are increasingly coveted by collectors internationally.

Dr Heike Brachlow

Dr Heike Brachlow is a German glass artist based in Cumbria, with BA, MA, and PhD degrees from Wolverhampton University and Royal College of Art, where she now teaches. Her award-winning work features in major museums including the V&A, European Museum of Modern Glass, and Tacoma Museum of Glass, and has been exhibited internationally across Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Colour is an important part of Heike’s sculptural forms; she explores transparent colour in glass through transformations and movement. By mixing colours during casting, she creates both uniform hues and patterns that reveal glass flow. Her PHD research led her to produce her own glass colours, adding metal oxides. The works change with viewing angle and light, enhanced by variations in thickness, curves, angles, and surface finishes.

My work explores transparent colour's interaction with glass form and light," she explains. I aim for transformative forms impacted by thick-thin variations, curves, angles and surface finishes".

The sculptures' lack of defined bases allows for multiple perspectives and placements, moving effortlessly with the slightest touch. Heike's works engage the viewer's senses, their vibrant metamorphosis echoing the artist's investigative, experimental approach.

Kate Pasvol is a glass artist working in North London with her roots in Wales. Originally an architect and teacher, she now works on her glass sculptures in her studio. As a keen walker her work is predominantly related to landscape, referencing the areas she has explored. Her work has been accepted into the prestigious British Glass Biennale and in 2019 she was awarded the Warm Glass People’s Prize.

Art and the seasons create a dialogue between humanity and nature. As the seasons change, they transform both colour and mood in the landscape. Light plays a crucial role, either revealing or concealing details while creating illusions of volume and depth For this body of work, Kate returned to the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park to study its seasonal transformations. By combining different metals and oxides, she’s captured the Massif in varying weather conditions from a single viewpoint. The result is a series of glass block tableaux representing Autumn, Winter, and Spring/Summer, each expressing the mountain's distinct moods.

Katherine Huskie is a glassblower and neon artist based in Wiltshire, UK. She started experimenting with glass at college and subsequently went to the University of Sunderland where she studied for a BA (Hons) in Glass and Ceramics.

In 2013, she co-founded Devereux & Huskie Glassworks with James Devereux, where they specialise in creating bespoke glass for international designers and artists. Her own work has a strong identity with form, texture and especially pattern, taking inspiration from nature, textiles or geometry. Katherine is constantly searching for new sources of inspiration and influences, seeking to translate this imagery within hot glass. She has a passion for manipulating blown glass, in her quest to captivate the viewer to interact with her artworks

Traditionally, Katherine adds the texture to the outside, however, with this series she has changed the perception of decorating a form, by adding it to the inside of the vessel. Once you peer inside, an incredible undulating quality is revealed. Katherine is pushing the boundaries of glassblowing and revealing an otherwise secret world, producing ‘functional’ shapes that are beautiful artworks.

Layne Rowe

Layne Rowe forged his glassblowing career path while studying 3D Design at the University of Central Lancashire in the early 1990s. Though initially drawn to metalwork, he fell in love with glass after his first encounter with the medium, instantly captivated by its complexity, heat, and character. Layne was driven by a desire to create beautiful objects through skilful techniques and creative colour applications.

Over his 20-year career with Peter Layton at London Glassblowing, his artistic journey continually pushes creative boundaries, through perfectly controlled yet organic glass explorations of nature's colours and patterns. While technical mastery remains paramount, he has expanded into imbuing works with deeper meaning and powerful messages.

Layne’s Woven Forms are inspired by the Devon coastline and have been evolving for several years. This series of work is a result of intricate layering of different pre-made coloured canes around a molten form, that is twisted and when cold, cut into with a diamond wheel, to reveal vibrant colours beneath the surface. The effect is like water over precious stones, or the rock with its glimmering colours beneath, reflecting natural growth and corrosion.

Liam

Liam Reeves has been a professional glassmaker since graduating with a BA in 3D Design from Middlesex University in 1998. In 2009, he then studied for an MA at the RCA where he works as a hot-glass technician. Working alongside renowned UK glassmakers, he has explored the evolution of technology and its impact on human experience.

Liam utilises computer-aided design and digital fabrication to create his art. His work investigates intersections of material, pattern, colour and form, by harnessing the glassblowing process to manifest digitally-derived geometries, like the Golden Ratio's spiral forms found throughout nature.

Bridging the natural and virtual worlds, Liam examines the transforming concept of craftsmanship, where digital skillsets parallel material craft. Through his pieces, he prompts viewers to reconsider how advancing technologies are reshaping our interactions with and perception of objects and environments.

Louis Thompson

Louis Thompson is one of the most exciting and sought-after glass artists working in Britain today. He gained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988 and has worked together with various artists around the world. Louis has blown glass with Peter Layton at London Glassblowing for over 20 years. During this time, he completed a Masters degree at the Royal College of Art.

Louis’ work draws inspiration from taxonomy, scientific research and medical apparatus. He creates collections of related objects varying in colour, form and scale, often featuring sequences of freeblown glass vessels, in which mysterious forms appear suspended within richly coloured mediums. He began this body of work after studying Freud's dream analysis writings, with each piece representing a sequential variation on a single form or object. “It s repeated but not repetitive - taking a form and twisting it to show its diverse possibilities,” he explains.

Exploring collections, archives and change over time, recent installations evoke suspended DNA patterns or alien scientific specimens. The blown and sculpted works manifest Louis' enduring fascination with collections and archives, through their subtle shifts in material, colour and form.

Sila Yücel

Sila Yücel is a dedicated and talented emerging young glass artist. Initially specialising in graphic design at Kingston University, she now strives to reimagine those elements in a new and compelling medium. Her inspiration stems from her family's roots in northern Cyprus. Frequent trips as she was growing up, started to reflect the contrast between the blossoming nature in the warm Mediterranean climate, and the dividing boundaries humans have made.

The piece emerges from a dual challenge: crafting a perfect cube containing an internal hexagon, and exploring the interplay between two distinct colours. The result is a striking geometric form where a familiar cube intersects with hexagonal planes. Cast in two separate halves, the pieces are carefully cold-worked before being laminated together into a single harmonious composition. As light plays across the surface, it reveals a subtle gradient that shifts with each new viewing angle. This exploration of colour and geometry creates an endlessly engaging experience, inviting observers to discover the multiple hexagonal forms hidden within the cube's symmetrical structure.

Tomáš Brzon

Czech artist Tomáš Brzon was born in Nový Bor and trained at the prestigious School of Glassmaking in Kamenický Šenov. Tomáš has honed his craft alongside celebrated artists including Martin Rosol, Jan Mares, and Latchezar Boyadjiev. Now working from his studio in Nový Bor, his work has been exhibited across Europe and the United States.

Tomáš is rapidly gaining international recognition for his striking geometric glass sculptures that blend polished and matte surfaces. His masterful technique reveals intricate internal and external contours, resulting in visually dynamic compositions that push the boundaries of contemporary glass art. Tomáš finds inspiration in the shapes and imagery of his everyday surroundings and experiences. Light, in particular, serves as the driving force behind his artistic expression with glass. By harnessing light's interaction with form and surface texture, he produces objects that challenge perception through reflection and refraction.

Whether distorting or enhancing, concealing or revealing, Tomáš’ deceptively simple yet optically captivating pieces, celebrate the innate capacity of glass to bend and manipulate light. His work invites viewers to contemplate the material's unique qualities through a minimalist yet thought-provoking lens, shaped by the phenomena of the everyday world.
