I’ve newly arrived on retreat as I sit writing this. I had a stimulating conversation over lunch and now a free afternoon ahead of me to enjoy the quiet, vibrant atmosphere. At times like this I feel particularly fortunate to have come across meditation and Buddhist teachings.

the effects of my actions. I was increasingly confronted by ethical dilemmas: should I do this or should I do that? In those days I would have really benefited from some clear guidance. Our course ‘How to Live: What to Do’ aims to give you just that. It’ll introduce you to universal ethical principles and give you a practical approach to applying them, helping you become a happier, more positive presence in the world. Retreats are an important foundation to my practice. I consider them an essential ingredient in living an effective and rich life. It’s only day one of my current retreat but I have several more planned out in my diary. I invite you to do the same – look closely at this programme and pick at least one retreat that you’d like to go on. I’d particularly recommend the Spring Retreat. Our retreat centre Vajrasana is truly stunning in the Spring. As the cherry trees in the courtyard come into bloom, the earth awakens to remind us that her beauty was there all along. What better setting to uncover the true potential of our lives?

Yet I remember, when I was starting out, how difficult it was to establish a regular meditation practice. I needed reminders and plenty of encouragement to keep me on track. This January we’re launching a brand new ‘Meditation Challenge’ to help you step into the New Year with intention and give you guidance and support to keep meditating. Whether you’re brand new or have been practising for some time, I hope that taking up the challenge will keep your aspirations alive as you journey into 2020. One thing I hadn’t anticipated when I started meditating was that I would have to change! Of course I mostly wanted that but I didn’t realise quite how much of my behaviour it would call into question. Actions that I previously didn’t think twice about now stuck around in my consciousness as if waiting for a response from me. I realised that meditation was making me more sensitive to

Wishing you all the very best,

Suryagupta Chair of the London Buddhist Centre 1
