News of the latest cowardly terrorist attack on and around London Bridge broke just before our Magazine went to the printers.

I would like to offer my sympathy to all those who were the innocent victims of this latest act of senseless violence, as well as the attacks in Westminster and Manchester.

Our thoughts are with all those affected.

London Bridge is a popular choice for a night out for people from our part of London. I am very proud and moved by the way people responded: from the members of the public who challenged the attackers and who helped keep others safe, to the rapid action taken by the Police to deal with the attackers and the response of the emergency services and the wider community.

In this magazine we publish a powerful call for unity in the face of the terrorist threat from our Borough Commander Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell on page 7. Please take note of the important points he makes.

We shouldn’t forget that we vastly outnumber the tiny number of fanatics who wish to harm us and our way of life. lf we support each other and the emergency services, we will reduce the risk of further tragedies.

news Bexley’s new Mayor Longstanding local resident and family man Peter Reader is our new Mayor. His wife Irene will serve with him as Mayoress.

The Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress will be Cllr John Wilkinson and his wife, Carol.

The new Mayor has lived in the borough since the age of five and has been married to Irene for the past 30 years. They are looking forward to meeting new people and discovering more about the borough and the local organisations that are such an important part of the community.

Peter’s mother died as a result of Parkinson’s 17 years ago and he and the Mayoress have chosen the Bexley & Dartford branch of Parkinson’s UK as their charity for the year.

The Bexley and Dartford Branch of Parkinson’s UK offers information, friendship and support to local people with Parkinson’s, their families and carers. They also organise regular events and social activities. They meet in Bexley on the fourth Thursday of the month (except December) from 2pm-4pm at Pincott Hall, Christ Church, Broadway, Bexleyheath DA6 7BT.

Beside the seaside Work is well underway at the new ‘Belvedere Beach’ playground.

Progress on the new play park is going so well that the Council is hoping to open the playground later this summer.

Work started in late March, picking up pace after the Easter School holidays when the park was closed to the public for safety.

The grounds and drainage work were completed in May. The public toilet blocks and the Bexley Beach kiosk will be refurbished in July.

When finished, the new park will be open throughout the year and will offer a range of fully inclusive equipment, including sensory and educational play areas, as well as an interactive water play area.

The new ‘Belvedere Beach’ park has been part-funded by Cory Environmental Trust in Britain.

Keep Bexley on Track Consultation on the Department for Transport’s proposals for the South Eastern rail franchise was put on hold during the General Election period.

The closing date for comments has since been extended to 11:45pm on 30 June 2017.

The consultation included inviting comment on the possibility of reducing the choice of London termini to rail travellers, with the aim of providing a more regular timetable and reliable service. This would mean the end of direct rail services from central and north Bexley to Charing Cross and Victoria.

A petition opposing the proposal attracted 28,678 signatures before the consultation was paused.

The Council has expressed its opposition to the proposal and continues to argue forcefully for more investment to improving local rail services. It is has also asked for a public meeting about the proposals to be held in the borough.

Guy’s Cancer opens at Queen Mary’s Hospital Guy’s and St Thomas’ new cancer centre – Guy’s Cancer at Queen Mary’s Hospital - opened its doors to patients In May. Some chemotherapy had already been provided at QMH, but more patients can now have this vital treatment locally. Radiotherapy is available locally for the first time - previously patients had to travel into central London for treatment.

The Centre also includes a new Dimbleby Macmillan Support Centre, an information and supportive care service for cancer patients and their families.

QMH’s new Kidney Treatment Centre opened its doors to patients in April. It replaces a temporary dialysis unit on the QMH site and increases the number of kidney dialysis stations from 12 to 20. There are also consultation rooms for outpatient appointments.

Both centres are part of a £30 million redevelopment of the Queen Mary’s Hospital site, which is owned and managed by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. It is becoming a hub for a range of services run by providers, including Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital. http://qmh.oxleas.nhs.uk

Transforming Erith Erith will be one of the first places to benefit from the Borough’s ambitious growth plans, with a programme of regeneration, aimed at developing the area into a thriving town centre, beginning in early September.

Initial work will see the removal of the pedestrian subway that runs under the Fish Subway at Queens Road, with a more direct and safer route at surface level for people going to and from the town centre to the railway station.

The public areas in and around the College site will also be improved. Plans are also underway to develop the remaining part of the former Walnut Tree depot site. More detail on this will be available in late summer.

Look out too for details of some summer events with local partners such as Erith Playhouse and The Exchange, to celebrate Erith’s

unique history and untapped potential.

The public space around Erith station entrance and the Pier will be opened up and enhanced with better signage and plant shrubbery, making these areas more attractive for the local community.

The public realm improvement works are funded by London Borough of Bexley in partnership with TfL and the Mayor of London. The aim is to create an active town centre that can make the most of Erith’s unique setting by the River Thames.

Have your say on Bexley’s Draft Growth Strategy An extensive public consultation is underway on Bexley’s draft Growth Strategy.

When adopted, the document will be the Council’s growth manifesto, informing new planning policies, frameworks and town centre master plans for the borough.

If you haven’t done so already, you have until 14 July to give your views.

A series of roadshows on the Strategy are taking place around the borough to raise awareness of the consultation and encourage people to give their views.

Full and summary versions of the Strategy are available at Council Offices and libraries, or to view or download at www.bexley.gov.uk/growth.

You can give your views in writing on by completing an online survey via the website.

We stand together Stuart Bell, Bexley Borough Commander As we all reflect on the horrific events of recent weeks, I wanted to send a message to the community.

Whilst London Bridge and Westminster can seem a long way off, these were attacks on our Capital city, our tourists, our businesses, our commuters from around London and our residents.

The effects are felt across London and further afield. My heart goes out to all those affected.

I’m proud of my colleagues and everyone who stood up to the cowards responsible for both attacks. It shows how strong we can be.

Put simply, these attacks are designed to divide communities, create unrest, generate panic and instil terror into our way of life.

The only way these murderers can win is if we respond in the way that they want us to. Whilst I agree these are extremely worrying events I would urge residents of Bexley to stand united and stick together regardless of race, religion and background and to support each other and the emergency services in this difficult time.

The following are my key messages.

• Please be our eyes and ears and report any suspicious behaviour or events. All communities need to step up and be prepared to let us know of danger.

• Be alert but not alarmed.

• Please do not let hatred or fear cause us to turn on each other or any section of our community some of whom will be feeling fearful, isolated and worried.

Please let’s stick together.

• If you are a victim of any crime where your race or religion appears to be the motivating factor please let us know. We want to protect you but can’t if we don’t know about it.

• We will take a robust stance against anyone who uses these events to commit crimes motivated by hate.

• Please ensure our emergency service is appropriately used.

• We will try to provide as much presence in busy areas as we can. If you commute into London you will see an increasingly heavy police presence in place to protect you and allow you to go about your travels in the capital.

Bexley is a strong, integrated and diverse community that I am proud to serve. We will be defined by how we respond to these events. Please help us to unite and stand together during this difficult time.

news Opportunities for learning and wellbeing The Learning Centre Bexley and Resources Plus have combined their services to help local people to improve their skills and benefit from economic growth.

The Learning and Enterprise College Bexley will launch this summer. It will offer more wide ranging opportunities for skills and employment, intergenerational learning for families and continue to provide personal development for health and wellbeing.

It will promote the arts and culture to help boost the economy and bring communities together.

It will also enhance the service for adults with special educational needs or disabilities through Bexley Twofold’s supported employment opportunities alongside lifelong learning.

Gravel Hill Work is progressing on the two new roundabouts on the A220 at Gravel Hill, at the junctions with Albion Road and Watling Street/ Broadway, Bexleyheath.

Library get togethers There’s no need to be alone when there are a range of social groups and activities on offer in Bexley’s libraries.

Libraries are a great place to join a local social group and meet new friends.

Scrabble, chess clubs, knitting and sewing groups are all great ways to share your interests and make new friends. Tea and coffee mornings offer a chance to sit, relax and chat with others.

If you enjoy reading, you can talk about your

favourite books at one of our reading groups, including a group for the visually impaired.

There are also Living Well with Dementia groups, with activities for those living with dementia and their carers.

There’s no need to book for the activities – just come along.

FUNDING FOR BEXLEY BUILDINGS A grant from the Council’s Historic Buildings Fund will support the restoration of five of the borough’s historic buildings.

“Bexley’s rich history is evident in our historic built environment,” says Cllr Linda Bailey, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Growth. “Even when buildings are wellmaintained, decay and deterioration is inevitable. Where this has occurred, it is important that restoration works are carried out to preserve the special architectural or historic character of the building.

BexleyCo Earlier this year, Bexley’s Cabinet approved the establishment of a development company owned by the Council to invest in or develop property opportunities on a commercial basis.

The new company, BexleyCo, will support and contribute to the delivery of the Borough’s Growth Strategy by providing a way for the Council to use its resources to stimulate the local economy, leverage inward investment and make the borough an attractive location for people and businesses.

By 2020, all councils will no longer receive grant funding from the Government and will rely totally on the income they generate. Raising income in new ways is becoming increasing important to fund the services councils are required to provide

by law and to meet local priorities.

The Council will be the sole shareholder of BexleyCo, with the important role of shareholder exercised through a delegated committee. The first meeting of this committee, to be held as the magazine went to print, will set out how the company will be governed and how it will operate.

Garden waste collection winner During National Gardening Week (10-16 April) we announced that the 40,000th person to sign up to our garden waste service would win free garden waste collection for a year.

We can now reveal the winner is Pam Pearey, from Belvedere.

“I love to potter around my garden, especially in the summer months when the flowers are in full bloom” she says. “My husband Paul has been working very hard too and has installed new patio and planters.

“We’re both very chuffed to hear that I’ve won a full

year’s subscription for your garden waste service - thank you.”

The Garden Waste Service is just £33 for the year. You will receive a 240 litre garden recycling bin which is collected fortnightly (25 collections).

You can also receive a discount on buying your own compost bins, as well as wormeries, water butts and more.

Pam’s new patio planters

Free summer music at Lesnes Abbey Woods A free al fresco music and entertainment community event will be held on Sunday 16 July in the Monk’s Garden at Lesnes Abbey Woods.

The afternoon event will feature live entertainment from a series of artists playing some of the finest acoustic music from London and beyond. Younger visitors may prefer to go on the bouncy castle or have their face painted.

This event will take place in the Monk’s Garden.Tickets are free but must be pre-booked.

Residents are encouraged to go along, listen to the music and experience some of the other fantastic new park improvements. All of the attractions outside of the Monk’s Garden will be open as usual, so why not also enjoy the improved recreation area and children’s playground, or take in the extensive ancient woodlands?

Visitors can also sample some snacks at the new café ‘Abbey Good Coffee’ and take in the panoramic views from the terrace of the stunning new Lesnes Lodge building.

Other enhanced attractions include the improved fossil pit, a dipping platform, a trim trail, outdoor gym and heathland classroom. A new Parkour Zone and pump track have also been added.

The improvements are part of the £4.2m Lesnes Abbey Woods enhancement project which is funded by the London Borough of Bexley and the Heritage Lottery Fund (which is investing £3.5m).

caring Telecare package provides ‘peace of mind’ The husband of a local 52-yearold woman who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease has said the telecare package they’ve received has helped his family to live a “normal life” once again.

The family were referred to the Council’s Telecare team after a recent incident where the woman left their home and was missing for 15 hours.

“My wife had been found wandering on the road, which is very busy with heavy traffic,” the husband said. “The incident caused the family a lot of anxieties and raised questions if I could continue caring for her at home.”

The team installed a memo minder near the family’s front door. When his wife approaches it plays a voice recording of himself reassuring and encouraging her to wait for the family to return.

Property exit sensors were also installed on the porch door. These are linked to a monitoring centre, who will call a listed contact if alerted, in this case, the next door neighbour.

CARER’S CORNER Research carried out during Carers Week 2017 (12-18 June) shows that carers don’t feel their role is understood or valued. 72% of Carers have given up work or reduced their hours and 71% say they have experienced stress, anxiety and depression. If you are a carer in Bexley, you can get support from the Carers Wellbeing Service.

The service is a partnership between four charities which provides advice about welfare benefits you might be entitled to claim.

They can also tell you how to get a break from caring,

befriending support for you and for the person you care for and about support groups where you can meet other carers.

Rent it Right The Council has recently completed a consultation on introducing selective and additional licensing schemes in the Borough to support tenants, landlords and residents.

The additional licensing scheme would cover smaller Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs). The selective licensing scheme covers all privately rented accommodation in the DA8 and SE28 post codes.

The schemes should come into use later this year. An early bird scheme will offer landlords a discounted licence fee.

Fostering Fortnight National Fostering Fortnight took place last month, when teams from Bexley were out and about looking for people who could make a real difference to a child or young person’s life.

Bexley’s campaign this year focuses on the fact that being a Foster Carer is a career different from any other. No two days are the same and your home is your workplace.

Foster Carers can be single, married, gay or straight. They can own or rent their home. They may have a young family, an empty nest or have no children.

Bexley recently recognised some of its longest-serving foster carers at a special event, where they were thanked for their fantastic achievement. The length of service recognised ranged from five to 25 years and represented 260 combined years of fostering experience!

Lending a hand Volunteer Centre Bexley is part of Bexley Voluntary Service Council (BVSC). It is the local ‘go to’ place for all things community and voluntary related, whether you want to volunteer your time, are looking for volunteers, or find out about local organisations.

Volunteering is ideal for making new friends, learning new skills, creating a positive change in your own community, or pursuing an interest. Whatever you are looking to do there’s a volunteer role for you BVSC is also the hub for advice and signposting for new or existing voluntary groups that need to know how to find training, access funding or receive voluntary sector news.

Bexley Care, the local organisation that brings together health and adult social care in the community, was officially launched last month.

Bexley Care is a new partnership between the Council and Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. By providing more ‘joined up’ care and support, Bexley Care hopes to be able to help people to remain independent for longer and reduce the need for admission to hospital or to long-term care.

Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Cllr Brad Smith said: “By bringing our resources together we get the benefit of organisational efficiencies and, more importantly, we get away from duplicating services. Working together we will focus on independence and prevention for local people.”

“This is a time of smaller budgets and increasing demand, but it is also a time for new thinking and making the most of great opportunities.”

clean & green Waste not, want not Join Bexley’s It’s the Bexley way! volunteer Litter Pickers Thanks to our residents’ efforts, Bexley continues to be the top London borough for recycling.

Despite this, there are still high levels of food waste found in green bins.

Almost half of this material could have been put in brown food waste caddies, including egg shells, bones, yoghurt and tea bags.

Here are just some of the many ways you can help to reduce food waste at home l Grate hard cheese, freeze it, then cook with it later l Keep brown bananas out of the fruit bowl to stop other fruit going off

l Freeze surplus bread for

later use. It will keep well for two to three months If you have to throw food waste away, we collect it for anaerobic digestion. This is a highly sustainable method of dealing with organic waste which produces both renewable energy and a fertiliser. To help us, please put your leftover food in your special food bin.

In June the Council will be door knocking in some areas and talking to residents. The aim is to help residents to increase the amount of food they recycle by giving them more support.

You can help keep the borough clean in-between scheduled cleanings by joining Bexley’s Community Litter Picking Scheme.

More than 160 volunteers have already joined the scheme, including people from faith groups, cubs, brownies and schools.

Talking about why he joined the scheme, Sidcup volunteer Colin Larkin said: “If I see litter out of my window I just feel compelled to pick it up. The frustrating thing is, if litter bothered every resident as much as it bothers me and they picked up litter outside their house too, then the area would have none!”

All volunteers can litter pick at their own convenience when they have a bit of spare time.

They are provided with a hi-visibility vest, litter picker, gloves and bags.

Get green fingers with a Bexley allotment Steve Soler-Gomez from Sidcup has been the Bexley Federation of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners’ Site Representative for Harland Road allotments since he retired, around 15 years ago. As well as offering on-site support and advice, he liaises between plot holders and the Council in order to keep things running smoothly.

Steve has also been working on his own plot on the allotment for nearly 40 years. Although he says he doesn’t like greens very much himself, he and his wife grow potatoes, cabbages, fruits and flowers.

“I think of it as my own back garden,” he says. “I love the fresh air and freedom it gives you.

I love the people. We may all have different ideas, but we all pull together and there’s a real sense of community.

“Taking on an allotment is a commitment, but the trick is little but often, even if you can only come down for half an hour a day.

“The best thing to do is to make plans in advance, start simply, start from one end and work to the other. If you’re ever not sure, you can always ask a fellow plot holder or site representative for advice.

“Take on an allotment and come and enjoy!”

Getting tough on litter The Council’s pilot Environmental Enforcement service has now been operating since October 2016 and has issued over 3,000 fixed penalty notices for littering and not clearing up dog fouling.

For those offenders that have decided not to pay the fines they received for this criminal activity, prosecutions are being processed through the Magistrates’ Court.

The first batch of cases went to court last month, resulting in 25 successful littering prosecutions, with fines ranging from £80 up to £250. Costs were also awarded

to the Council meaning some offenders were required to pay £500.

Around another 100 cases are pending.

Littering is a criminal offence and those successfully prosecuted will receive a criminal record.

Enforcement Officers are all equipped with body worn cameras that capture any enforcement interaction. The camera is there to ensure that fines are appropriate and are issued fairly.

A decision will be made over

the summer on whether the enforcement service should be made permanent.

Our team of school crossing patrols recently visited the Broadway, Bexleyheath, to remind drivers of the legal requirement to stop for them, and to stay stationary until they return safely to the pavement. Failure to do so can result in a fine of up to ÂŁ1,000 and 3 penalty points on your driving licence.

Bexley has 32 school crossing patrols, who help children all over the borough get to and from school safely. They are all paid and fully trained.

Ride safely With the summer holidays nearly upon us, the Council, police and Transport for London are urging parents and carers to make sure their children are riding safely.

In recent months there has been an increase in the number of teenage cyclists riding along roads and pavements doing wheelies, with some even cycling on the wrong side of the road towards oncoming traffic.

People found to be riding in such a way can be reported for anti-social behaviour, risk having their cycles seized by the police, and even have their TfL Zip Oyster Cards withdrawn if they are found to be affecting bus services.

The Council runs Bikeability courses throughout the year in local schools and during school holidays for children aged 10 and above. These courses provide on-road cycle training and are free to anyone living or attending school in the borough.

Bexley Neighbourhood Watch update Weekly reports We recently introduced a weekly reporting service.

The service details crime in each ward using information from ward police teams, our members, Bexley police and members of the public. The aim of the service is to keep our co-ordinators up-to-date with criminal activity and important community dates or events.

Keeping in touch

Sidcup have both recently seen a rise in new members.

Shopwatch links together shops, allowing them to share information. Houndwatch asks dog walking members to report any suspicious activity, including evidence of drug taking and fly tipping. Both have had an important impact so far.

children Free summer reading scheme begins

hildren of all ages and reading abilities are invited to take part in the Reading Agency’s free summer reading challenge in all Bexley libraries.

The challenge begins on Saturday 15 July, when children start to choose six books to read over the summer holidays.

Children collect cards and rewards when they complete each book and will receive a medal and certificate if they complete the challenge by Saturday 9 September.

This year’s theme is Animal Agents, a gang of eccentric beasts who solve a librarybased mystery illustrated by Tony Ross, best known for illustrating the Horrid Henry series of books by Francesca Simon.

Positive Journeys A new children in care council was launched in Bexley last month. Positive Journeys is a chance for young people in care to get together and have fun, talk about their experiences, as well as making a difference to the borough by taking part in key projects.

The young people came up with their new name and developed the logo. They also worked on a list of all the things they feel they needed from the professionals involved with their care.

The launch event saw members of Positive Journeys recognising their significant adult with a short speech and a certificate. Those awarded included teachers, foster carers and social workers.

The speeches made were strong and emotional and gave a real insight into the lives of the children and young people involved.

There was also the chance to take a look at artwork recently produced by the group.

Bexley Deaf Centre Bexley Deaf Centre celebrate their 25th Anniversary this year.

The centre makes a difference to the lives of deaf and hard of hearing people through encouragement and empowerment and by raising deaf awareness throughout the borough.

Based in Slade Green, the centre regularly run British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness Courses, organise Hearing Aid Clinics, hold a weekly Job Club as well as a regular lunch club and outings.

Their aim is to ensure that the interests of the Deaf Community of Bexley are well represented.

The Centre celebrated their special anniversary with an event earlier this month.

Come and play A new 3G pitch is open for use at Mayplace Sportsground.

The pitch was made possible by Football Foundation and London Marathon Charitable Trust grants following applications from the Council and Danson Sports FC. The new facility will allow greater community use, including walking, disability and women’s football.

An opening event will take place in early July.

Sport on the water For children aged 8 to16, sailing and kayaking are available at Danson Watersports Centre on Mondays to Fridays from 10.30am to 3pm during most of the summer holidays. The cost is from £22 a person.

Evening sessions are also available on Wednesdays from 5pm to 7pm until September for £9.50 per person.

For people and children of all ages there are row boats and mini ships to hire on the lake.

They are available at weekends, on bank holidays and in the school holidays.

You can also arrange oneto-one tuition in sailing or kayaking, sailing courses and two-hour birthday parties with experienced kayaking or sailing instructors.

Ideas for new community hub

Harrow Manorway Improvements

Together with the Bexley Voluntary Service Council (BVSC) the Council is holding a special event to further explore the option of a community wellbeing hub.

The event will offer staff and volunteers from local voluntary and community groups a chance to input into early plans around how the hub would work, who would be involved and what space is available.

From June 2017 until autumn 2018, the first phase of major improvement works will be taking place on Harrow Manorway to upgrade the area between the flyover at Abbey Wood Station and Eastern Way. The aim of the improvement works are to transform the appearance and nature of this major route, making the street more attractive and enabling it to accommodate the expected changes in the area in the coming years. This will include new homes in Southmere Village.

London Borough of Bexley, Royal Borough of Greenwich and Peabody are working together to fund these significant improvements.

New era for Erith’s Carnegie building Plans to reopen Erith’s iconic Carnegie building are progressing well. Robin Lee Architecture have been appointed and have begun work on the design of the building’s interior, which will be developed through the summer.

The final design will protect the heritage of the building while enabling it to be used as a community hub and showcase for creative businesses. There will be space for artist and designer studios, for events and exhibitions, as well as a training centre and café. A local company, The Exchange Ltd, are working on the project with the Council.

Erith’s liquid history

The Thames has been described as London’s ‘liquid history’ and the history of Erith, one of Bexley’s most ancient towns, is inextricably bound up with the river.

The town is home to the longest pier in London and there was once a royal dockyard just to the northwest of the present town centre.

Erith enjoyed a short period as a popular riverside resort during the middle of the 19th century. Its pier and accompanying hotel catered for the many day-trippers who visited the town on Thames pleasure boats or via the railway, which arrived in 1849.

Soon after its time as a day resort, industrialisation and engineering came to define Erith and its riverfront. Significant regeneration work has taken place in the town providing it with a new town centre and riverfront.

To discover more about Erith’s ‘liquid history’ you can join staff from Bexley Local Studies & Archives Centre on a ‘Riverside Ramble’ – a guided heritage walk along the town’s riverfront.

Your Local Health Service

Help yourself to better health Did you know that around 15 million people in the UK have a long-term condition such as asthma or diabetes?

These conditions, which are usually life-long and require medication to manage, are becoming increasingly common throughout the UK – and across developed nations abroad, due to the fact that people are living longer and, during their lifetimes, may make lifestyle choices that raise the risk of these conditions occurring.

As people get older and face an increased risk of developing a long-term condition, it becomes more important for people to make healthier choices and to receive the help they need to look after themselves in a healthy way. The NHS calls this ‘self-care’ and it is probably something that residents already do to some degree.

Self-care includes healthy behaviour that anyone can do such as brushing teeth, doing some exercise or quitting smoking, as well as managing common health conditions with the support of a healthcare professional.

Why self-care is important to you The NHS believes self-care is important because most people – even those with a long-term condition – will spend only a tiny proportion of their time in a consultation with a healthcare professional. Day-to-day most people manage their healthcare condition at home, seeking support when they need it from credible sources of health advice such as Health Help Now Bexley (www.healthhelpnow-nhs.net) and also convenient, accessible and skilled healthcare professionals such as the community pharmacy team.

As well as creating Health Help Now to promote selfcare across the borough, NHS Bexley CCG has now asked GPs to consider recommending that patients buy some items from pharmacies, supermarkets or online – rather

than give patients a prescription. Similar plans have been announced in other boroughs across south-east London and NHS England is reviewing the prescribing of glutenfree foods across England.

The medicines under review include only a limited number of items that are readily available without a prescription from pharmacies, supermarkets and online – see the list of medicines, below. Further information on Bexley’s prescription item review is available from the NHS Bexley CCG website at www.bexleyccg.nhs.uk (from mid-June).

NHS Bexley CCG believes this plan stands to save the NHS in Bexley up to £1.4 million – money that can be reinvested in more appropriate care for local residents.

Patients should also remember that GPs will still be able to exercise their clinical judgment when recommending a treatment option. Local healthcare professionals would always encourage patients to take an active role in their healthcare, and residents should always feel free to discuss any concerns or questions about their care during the consultation.

What medicines are on NHS Bexley CCG’s review list? n Treatments for self-limiting conditions or for relatively short-term use e.g. pain relief, antihistamines, indigestion remedies, remedies for the symptoms of cold and flu and eye drops for short term treatment of dry eyes n Lactose-free, soya-based, and stay down baby milks n All gluten free foods

Evening and weekend GP appointments for Bexley patients Patients registered with a GP practice in Bexley are now able to access evening and weekend GP appointments.

The new service, set to provide an additional 37,000 bookable patient appointments annually, was created by local GPs and will be based from two locally-based GP hubs – one at Queen Mary’s hospital in Sidcup and the other at Erith hospital.

Appointments are available at both GP hubs between 6.30pm and 8pm, Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 8pm on Saturdays and Sundays (including bank holidays). Patients registered with a Bexley GP practice can book an appointment via their local GP practice (during their opening times – 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday).

Local GP and NHS Bexley CCG chief clinical officer, Dr Nikita Kanani said: “We know from listening to local people that they would like access to more GP appointments at a time that is convenient for them. This new innovative service is designed for patients needing an appointment in the evenings during the week, or between 8am and 8pm at the weekend.

“With your consent, the GP working at either of the GP hubs will be able to access your medical record to ensure you receive the best treatment possible. Not only that, this also helps to ensure that the GP you are registered with, receives a relevant update on the treatment you received.

“And don’t forget, local pharmacists also offer a wide range of additional services. They offer free expert advice on a number of health issues, support for self-care and medicines to treat common complaints such as coughs and colds, flu, sore throats, earache, backache, stomach upsets and cuts and grazes. If you urgently need medical help or advice but it’s not a life-threatening situation, dial 111 and remember, accident and emergency departments are for life-threatening emergencies only.”

The GP 8am to 8pm service is provided by the Bexley GP federation (a collaboration of Bexley GPs) Bexley Health Neighbourhood Care.

Meet our special feathered guests and even get the chance to hold one. Jambs Owls bring their visitor-friendly barn owls, eagle owls and other species to Hall Place and explain how they survive in the wild.
