The Swingle Singers


The London A Cappella International Summer School is a high quality and intensive four day course for groups and individuals, combining skill-building workshops with performances from some of the finest a cappella performers and educators in the industry, to create a unique vocal experience.

Offering a refreshing and fun approach to a cappella singing, the London A Cappella International Summer School provides a platform for you to enjoy singing with like-minded enthusiasts under the guidance of world-class tutors from a variety of vocal backgrounds – including The Swingle Singers. 4

Taking place in the heart of London you will have unrivalled access to one of the city’s most prestigious and dynamic venues – Kings Place. Open to participants from across the world, combine your passion for a cappella with visiting some of London’s iconic cultural and entertainment attractions.


Each day will begin with a thorough vocal warm up before launching into a selection of workshops and masterclasses with our world-class tutors. Initially you will work in groups, while later sessions will concentrate on individual development. There are opportunities throughout the day for personal practice sessions to allow you to absorb everything you have learnt.

The London A Cappella International Summer School includes workshops and performances from some of the finest a cappella performers and educators in the industry.

CLARE WHEELER Specialities: arranging, jazz singing and improvisation Clare Wheeler grew up in Kenya before moving to Manchester to attend Chetham’s School of Music, where she trained as a violinist and studied classical voice. She went on to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London to study jazz composition and voice under Pete Churchill and Tim Garland, as well as classical singing with Penny Mackay. Clare freelanced in London as a singer and composer, and taught at the Academy of Contemporary Music, before joining The Swingle Singers in 2007. In 2012, she released ‘Crossing’, a jazz album with American composer Tyler Gilmore. A respected voice in contemporary vocal music, Clare has been a guest host of BBC Radio 3’s ‘The Choir’. 8

KEVIN FOX Specialities: beatbox, vocal percussion, circle songs Ontario native Kevin Fox studied Anthropology and Archaeology at York University in Toronto, while directing and producing several albums for the award-winning collegiate choir Wibijazz’n. He cofounded the vocal band CADENCE, whose albums were nominated for three Juno awards – the Canadian equivalent to Grammy awards – and won several CARA awards. Kevin spent nine years as the quartet’s bass and vocal percussionist, and lent his voice to numerous other ensembles before joining the Swingle Singers in 2007. He continues to work as a sought-after arranger and educator for groups throughout the world.

DOMINIC PECKHAM Speciality: overall vocal performance Dominic Peckham is regarded as one of the UK’s finest young, dynamic orchestral and choral conductors. Dominic holds an impressive array of posts including Artistic Director of the Royal Opera House’s ‘RM19’ Youth Chorus, Assistant Musical Director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, Artistic Director and Founder of iSingUK and Musical Director of the London Oriana Choir. An ambassador for choral music of international renown through both performance and his extensive pioneering educational work, Peckham has served as Vocal Director for the BBC Choir of the Year, as a consultant of Trinity Guildhall’s teaching programme and as a guest speaker for ‘Sing Up’.

The summer school is dedicated to all forms and genres of a cappella singing so there truly is something for everyone. It is a unique opportunity to build on your existing skills and abilities whilst acquiring new ones at the same time. Through the expert guidance of industry experts such as worldchampion beatboxer Bellatrix joining us as visiting tutors, we will encourage everyone to experiment and to try new things.

We have negotiated a range of local accommodation packages to fit within different budgets, from studio apartments and hotels to student halls of residence and hostels. These bespoke recommendations are within commutable distance from the venue, Kings Place, taking into account a 5 night stay from Thursday 31st July (the day of the

course registration) through to Tuesday 5th August (the day after the course finishes). If you wish to extend your stay to arrive earlier or stay later, then this will be subject to availability and needs to be arranged directly with your chosen accommodation provider. Kings Place is a hub for music, art, dialogue and food, housed in an awardwinning building in King’s Cross, which also provides world class conferencing, events and office space. Since opening to the public in September 2008, a varied and open-minded programme has established Kings Place as one of Europe’s leading cultural landmarks.

The distinctive building houses a number of places to eat, drink and hang out, from the Green and Fortune café where you can sample homemade cake and artisan coffee, to the chic Rotunda restaurant with its outdoor terrace bar, so there are plenty of opportunities to socialise.

A non-refundable £100 deposit is required to secure your place on the course. You may pay the full balance up front now but this is also non-refundable. A discount will not be applied if the participant is unable to attend any of the days of the course. Open to all keen singers aged 17+. Attendees need to have reached the age of 17 by 01/08/2014. There is no upper age limit. Tailored to suit both individual applicants and whole groups. Designed for all singers, with or without previous a cappella experience. Non-residential.
