Since the initiation of this celebration has begun, there have been many new courses of action that have began to be taken, such as marches for women rights and faires to continue to advocate. On this month we strive to remember those women who have changed the world and those who have yet to change it.

The month of March is when the United States celebrates Women’s History Month. According to the National Women’s History Project, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission first initiated the idea for a Women’s History week in 1978, and in 1980 President Carter recognized the week of March 8 as National Women’s History week. Over the following 10 years, women across the country continued to fight for the recognition of women in history, so finally in 1987 Congress recognized the entire month of March as Women’s History Month. This recognition was especially

significant to the educational field, because it encouraged gender equality in the classroom. Teachers in our own school have experienced the struggle of women in education. Mrs. Elssmann was once a young high school graduate ready for college, but like many other young women in her generation, she was told that college was not worth it, because she was a woman. Her aspirations of medical school soon became all but dreams of another life. Although this experience may seem to be from so long ago, as a society we must look back at these memories as a reminder of our continuous battle for equality.

Every year on the 14th of March, Pi Day is celebrated to honor the infinite ratio of pi (π) that we have learned to use in math. Ms. Baker has given some creative experiments using pi, one of which is that there’s a video on YouTube called Song of π! that designated each number a key to make a song out of pi. She also explained an interesting fact that there is evidence in the Bible it has been proven that they used pi to build Solomon’s temple. To celebrate Pi Day, there were around 450 different pies with numerous flavors distributed at lunch made by Ms. Baker’s mother for the high school students and faculty. The pie flavors distributed were apple, lemon meringue, lime meringue, fresh strawberry, cherry, berry, and other types of pie flavors. All of which were delicious and a good way to celebrate Pi Day! photo by: Leileen Aguilar
