Weathering the Weather by Chloe Hegstad This Fall has brought a gloom of natural disasters such as hurricanes and an earthquake. Andy Sandiford works in the English Department at LLA. His mother, Penelope Sandiford, lives on St. Thomas Island which was impacted by hurricane Irma and Maria. P. Sandiford made it safely through Irma, but her house did not. “Damage was caused by heavy rains going through the windows and the windows ripped open making it so water and debris ruined the house. The contents of the house were flooded.” Hurricane Maria was soon followed by hurricane Irma. The island will take around six months to recover from all the damage. Danelle Taylor Johnston (full disclosure, Mirror sponsor) set up an account to aid the rebuilt of her home caused by the hurricane on Generosity.com “Penelope

Sandiford Hurricane Rebuild Fund.” Sandiford appreciates the fund being setting up, “because sometimes other people don’t have the courage to ask for help.” Yesenia Castañeda (12th) experienced the horror of having family members who were affected by the September 19 Puebla earthquake. “My relatives live in Puebla and their house split, so they can’t currently live in it right now,” Yesenia said. Her father tried to make contact with family living in Mexico and wasn’t able to get a reply until multiple hours later due to wifi being shut down. “My first thoughts were, “Is my family okay? And are other people’s families okay? Watching the news wasn’t easy either. “Seeing people crying about how they couldn’t find their children was even worse. How would my mom feel if she couldn’t

On October 1st of 2017, news rang out of the worst mass shooting in modern America. As images and videos were released, thousands anticipated news of their loved ones and their whereabouts. The attack took place during the annual Route 91 Harvest Festival, near the Mandalay Bay hotel, in Las Vegas, Nevada. At least 58 people were killed and 489 were injured during the shooting. An investigations is still underway, in hopes to understand the attackers motives. Many people in the area came together to help the victims by donating blood and providing a place to stay. The attack hit very close to home because some of our students and faculty knew people who were either injured or killed during this attack. Our prayers go out to those families and friends who lost loved ones that night.

find me and my brother? Throughout these moments I was hoping that other people were okay.” Ricardo Monteñez (‘17 alum) known as Ricky (full disclosure brother of Mirror staff Mosses), had to leave Puerto Rico because of hurricane Maria. People on the flight to the US were coming back from other Universities on the island. “It was a scary time, and my flight got delayed from here to California and I almost missed a couple flights,” he said. The destruction from hurricane Maria was awful. Families had to put up sheet metal in windows. Trees were everywhere and El Yunque (the only tropical rain forest in the US National Forest System) had no trees left. The houses that weren’t concrete were blown away. LLA continues to pray for the families of the vicWhen all the commotion dies down Ricky hopes tims and those still in the hospital. to go back.

To Kneel or not to Kneel

BRIEFS

Do you think the NFL players had a right to kneel during the national anthem?

Do you think President Trump’s comments were appropriate?

Under the Same Moon by Cheerleen Hu

Moon festival (also called mid-autumn festival) is a traditional festival falling on the 15th day of the 8th month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. It gets its name because it’s always celebrated in the middle of autumn in countries such as China, Korea, Vietnam, and other Asian countries. Moon Festival is a time when families celebrate together, have a big supper, eat mooncakes, and gaze at the moon. On October 5th, many international students got together celebrating the Moon Festival in Erica Rantung’s classroom including Vera Wei, who graduated last year. “I am so excited about the potluck because it brings us all together celebrating the Moon Festival as a big group,’’ said Cyndee Xu (11th), “I hope that we will have more activities like this.’’ There were some local students during the potluck and they all enjoyed it. “I am surprised that there are so many kinds of Asian food and I love it!”aid Mai Mai Ty (11th). To the international students, having such a potluck makes them feel like they are home. “I am really enjoying it because I feel like although I am home with my family members, I can still celebrate the traditional festival in the United States with international students. We are like a big family,’’ said Harry Feng (12th). “Even though I am in a different country, my family and I are still under the same moon, for which we are all celebrating.’’

• Earlier this school year Kaylee Chinchay, a LLA alumni, experienced an aneurysm, and has been hospitalized since. She is now undergoing physical therapy and continues to get stronger every day. The school will continue to pray for her and her recovery. • Stanley Bayag was recently hospitalized with pneumonia, but he is now on his way to recovery and was released from the hospital on October 10. He hopes to be back at school next week. the school continues to pray for his recovery.

Recently there was a controversy in the NFL. During the national anthem, many teams took a knee or went to the locker rooms to raise awareness of police brutality in African American communities. President Donald Trump responded by stating that they should be fired. The Mirror set out to find out what the school thought about this issue. We made a survey on The Mirror’s Instagram. On the survey we asked, “Do you think the NFL players have the right to kneel during the national anthem.” Out of 64 people that answered, 78% answered that the players did have the right to kneel during the national anthem while 22% answered that the players did not. When asked about why they answered no, people gave some interesting opinions. One senior said, “We should take pride in our country because we don’t have to worry about

the same issues as other countries in more severe situations.” A sophomore said, “It doesn’t matter whether or not you agree with the United States right now, but this country has been through a lot and deserves respect.” Another question we asked was whether or not President Trump’s response about the players was appropriate. The results of this question were a little closer than the first. Out of 48 people who answered this question, 42% said yes while 58% said no. This issue has several different positions, and it can be easy to retreat to our separate political camps. In spite of our differing opinions, it is important not to be polarized and to stay united.
