BLM: TAKING ACTION

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was choked to death by police officer Derek Chauvin for almost nine minutes, as reported by the LA Times. This brutal killing called for cries for justice and led to the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Millions of Americans took to the streets to protest the injustice of George Floyd’s death, Breonna Taylor’s death, and many other lives lost to police brutality. According to blacklivematters.com, this movement was created

by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi, in response to Trayvon Martin being murdered by George Zimmerman on February 26, 2012..

The killing of George Floyd elicited various responses. Many people were shocked, saddened and angry, but many others were not surprised. When Emma Wade of Redlands BLM heard the news, her heart sank. She thought to herself, “Wow, again.”

Faith Ncube’s (10th) reaction was anger. Another black person had suffered injustice at the hands of police.

Charles Amoateng (12th) was at a loss of words. He, like many others, wants the government to take action to get justice and to prevent other lives from being lost to police brutality. “What’s the point of a government if it is not going to be equitable,” he said.

According to nytimes.com, about 15 to 26 million people in the US joined in the fight to protest against police brutality.

These protests have taken place in cities like Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and even

here in our local town, Redlands. These protests have also started a conversation about how our community and our student body can prevent racial injustice and what needs to be done to have lasting change.

Wade said that people need to educate themselves and others and put these conversations into actions. Using the new information that people have learned, society needs to set new social standards,

to speak up, even though it might make them look uncool.

“We keep our cool, so we don’t get excluded,”said Ncube. Too many times people give into peer pressure. Teenagers allow people to say degrading things so that they do not stand out from the crowd. When you hear somebody saying things that are rude and offensive, don’t keep silent, speak out.

The major way that people, as a society, can enact real change, is through empathy. People need to have empathy for everyone. Wade said people give more empathy to characters than real life people. Let’s have some empathy for our victims.

Let’s think twice about our actions and we would see so much progress.

Maintaining Mental Health

Maintaining good mental health is just as important as any other thing in your daily life such as eating breakfast and doing chores around the

house. Mental health is what affects your state of mind during class and in public, but most importantly, it can change your behavior

if you’re not careful. Here are some helpful tips to make sure YOU maintain good mental health during quarantine.

1. Get Active: Without exercise, or at least a change of scenery, it’s going to be tough getting over the same old, every day routine.

Sometimes it’s good to stay put, but for your own benefit getting up for at least five minutes is a lot better than just sitting down continuously.

2. Find Hobbies: Finding a nice hobby is also a great way to keep your mind active even when classes are over and you’ve got nothing to do. Some good examples are: playing video games, creating art, reading a book, or even cooking. Just don’t let those hobbies get the best of you because classes still need to be attended to.

3. Socialize: Socializing is probably a hard thing to do now because of the fact that you can’t go to school and meet up with your buds there, but there’s always an alternative. For instance, using your phone and calling.

Try to find things to do together online so that way you’re not only socializing still, but you’re creating hobbies with each other so that’s still accomplishing two things in one.

4. Take a Break: Just take 10 minutes away from the screen if possible.

Without break time away from the screen you’ll experience eye strain and headaches. Most importantly you’ll get physically exhausted from just sitting in front of a screen all day.

5. Eat Healthy: Eating healthy might be slightly difficult during these times with all the delicious looking candy and carbohydrates known as chips and snacks and maybe your favorite snickers bar. But balancing your diet using the food chart should be more than helpful to those who are having trouble balancing their diet. Remember to keep everything in moderation!

6. Get Good Sleep: Sleeping is a HUGE part of staying focused in your online classes and keeping your brain well rested and healthy, without sleep we wouldn’t have enough energy to stay focused enough to even listen for 5 minutes in a zoom class, It’s also crucial to stay within your normal sleep schedule.

Mask On?

COVID-19 is spreading rampantly with 54,482 cases in San Bernardino County as of 28, September, according to The New York Times. Some wonder whether a cloth mouth covering is sufficient to protect us from getting COVID-19? When quarantine began in March wearing a mask was laughable.

However, since then masks have become integral in everyone’s daily lives. For most, walking out the door without a mask is like forgetting the keys to your car. It has become the new normal and it’s hard to imagine a time without them.

Some though wonder if wearing one really makes a difference. Rio Tomas (11th) said, “Masks [definitely] work.

It’s understandable that people have their doubts about masks because we are in a place where we don’t need to wear masks normally (i.e. for pollution).

What gives me faith in masks is the fact that surgeons and doctors wear them while being exposed to bodily fluids and are pretty safe for the most part. I know they use multiple layers of protection besides masks, but

masks are still the most basic form of protection.”

Kurt Baretta (10th) agreed, Masks “definitely do work as long as you wear them right.”

Zach Flores (12th) said, “I feel like they work for keeping people safe when they want/need to go

From a scientific standpoint, masks do in fact reduce the spread. The CDC.gov states in “COVID-19: Considerations 6

for Wearing Masks,” on 7 Aug. 2020, said that, “Masks are recommended as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the mask coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice. This is called source control.” This recommendation is based on the fact that COVID-19 can be spread through respiratory droplets and scientific research has proved that masks reduce dispersion of such droplets.

Masks may not be the most fun to wear. However, as Baretta said, “It definitely is annoying, but if we want to see any change and potentially return to normal life we all gotta do our part and wear them.”

What Did You Do With Your Quaran-time?

Due to quarantine, people have had lots of extra time. Students have found some interesting uses for this time.

Some people spent their quarantine learning to sew, others playing video games, everyone was doing something with this extra time.

Ryan Ho (9th) said that he enjoys tinkering with his 3-D printer in his spare time because it gives him “The ability to create anything!”

Some students tried learning an instrument during their free time.

Melissa Lee (11th), did just this. She started learning to play the guitar, “A lot of my friends played the guitar, so I thought I would give it a try.”

Other people started a platform for themselves like Devan Belleau (9th) who started a YouTube channel where he uses Lego stop motion animation to document his experiences and tell stories.

He wasn’t the only one to start documenting his experiences, Val Erben Bayeta (10th), started recording his progress making music to see how far he’s come from this point in the future.

Some people even started taking care of animals. Faith Albis (10th), started

caring for a baby bird who she got from her cousin who started breeding birds. She said, “It’s pretty stressful because you have to feed it every three hours. So in the 10-minute breaks in between classes, I’m like running.”

If you’re still looking for a way to spend your free time, here are some good ways to spend your time.

Reading, there are some amazing books available free at your local library. Journaling is another option for you to document your experiences during these strange times. Sewing, it’s a useful skill to have you could do anything from fixing rips to making your own clothes, or masks, out of just a piece of fabric. Baking, it could be a useful skill, but it’s also fun and you have a (hopefully) edible result.

Just relaxing is the best of all of these options. Sometimes you just take

a few hours for yourself, open up Netflix and let autoplay do its thing.

With the extra stress of online school, sometimes you just need something else to do, activities are great options, and at times simply taking a break to do something else can change everything.

Online Learning vs On-Campus Learning On August 24, 2020, Loma Linda Academy High School started the 2020-2021 school year off with distancing learning due to COVID-19. Online school has been the new normal for over a month this year. Distance learning brings with it challenges for students and teachers.

Some students also pointed out many negative factors and disadvantages from online learning.

“Online school is too long and it hurts our eyes and back from staring at the screen and sitting in our chairs all day,” Kadin Mangunsong (10th) said.

Staying focused is also an issue.

Andrew Adorador (10th) said, “while on zoom, it’s really easy to get distracted.”

“Not only is it physically tiring, it is also mentally harder to do online school,” Noah Saesim (10th) added.

Staring at a screen all day during school is very draining to the students, especially during classes.

Many students feel that the main challenge is the schedule, and it should be modified. Isabel Tejeda (11th) said, “It is really hard to concentrate during online classes and it’s really easy to get distracted.”

Tejeda also states that the lunch length is a problem and believes it should be extended. “I can’t get anything done in 30 minutes, that’s how long it takes just to get my food,” she said.

Benjamin Chun (9th) said that remote learning “allows him to organize himself better.” He also thinks that teachers give more work during this period. “They give more homework during online school, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but this means I have less free time,” he added. Overall, he is coping with the schedule and likes how it functions, but would prefer to go back to on-campus learning.

One beneficial part about online school is that “it is easier to connect with students because you can see them face to face and talk through zoom, but it still takes more time.”

Although the students and teachers are enduring online-school, they overwhelmingly would like to be able to go back to on-campus learning.

Chun wants to go back to school as soon as possible and he said “I would feel safe as long as everyone wears masks, checks their temperature, and everything is done in a very safe way.”

Elementary on Campus On August 21, 2020, the elementary students at Loma Linda Academy were granted a waiver allowing the students to come back to on-campus learning, on August 27.

After filling out many forms, the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health approved LLA TKSixth to return to on-campus learning.

Students and parents were given an option to either remain at home, or return to campus.

“The waiver idea is a good one, but it’s just the wrong time for it.”

- Sophia Chuquimia Students who chose to stay at home are taught using the Swivl, a device that follows the teacher around the classroom. While students who came back to on-campus learning, would be taught in the classrooms. The Loma Linda Academy Guidelines for Health and Safety states that those who choose to go to school must wear a mask, social distance, be screened before entering the campus, and sanitize.

If a child appears to have symptoms, they will immediately be isolated with a face covering until an authorized adult picks them up. Staff will also be

screened before entering campus, but if they have any symptoms, they must return home until they are cleared to come back.

When elementary teachers were asked about how they first reacted to hearing this news, Penny Richards, a sixth grade teacher, answered “Extremely excited, because kids need to be at school, they learn so much better at school.” She also stated that she is glad for the waiver, and this is letting the students have interaction, which is an opportunity that’s hard to find right now.

Blanca Calixto, a 1st grade teacher, (full disclosure, reporter’s parent) stated that she was shocked and surprised that the waiver was approved.

Sophia Chuquimia, a sixth grade student, said,“The waiver idea is a good one, but it’s just the wrong time for it. If the cases were better, then I think the waiver should be in place.”

Both Richards and Calixto were asked if they feared they would get Covid-19, and both said they are not afraid of contracting it. Mrs. Calixto said, “I do my best to take precautions that I can take.”

After starting school, the teachers came across some difficulties.Calixto said, “Teaching the on-campus students as well as the online learners is pulling me in various directions all throughout the day, and I fear that I am not reaching all my students with the quality that I would like to give them.”

All teachers have made changes such as the way the classroom is arranged to allow for physical distancing, the class procedures for hygiene, and class content. Richards said the changes in her classroom include a new syllabus, new website and a seating arrangement that were made to accommodate guidelines.

Although one Kindergarten classroom has had to move to onlinelearning due to a Covid positive case as of August 25, both students and teacher are doing their best to adjust to the new reality. Teachers are working extra hard with longer hours in order to prepare for the next day, and the students are also working hard to keep up with daily assignments.

While all this is being done, everyone is still keeping a safe distance and taking the necessary precautions.

There’s hope that soon we can all go back and have interaction we’re all craving, while still being safe.

A Different Classroom

In March of 2020, American students across the nation began schooling from home due to Covid-19. Teachers had to adapt to a new style of educating, and students had to adapt to a new classroom.

Like all changes, this one had its negatives and positives . Students across the country had to take on this change in order to succeed.

Caleb Morales (9th) says that one difficulty that came from virtual learning was not being able to see his friends in person. “The only way you can see your friends is through video screens.�

Although some students are struggling with learning virtually, Baldwin and Morales were able to find a positive or two about schooling from home.

Morales said that he enjoys the relaxed environment created by schooling from home, while Baldwin said that she enjoys the convenience of schooling from home. “I have my kitchen right downstairs. I have my pets right here,� she said.

Virtual learning has forced American students and teachers to change in ways that created challenges. Staying away from friends or colleagues, as well as adjusting to the online format of learning are challenges both parties have experienced.

However, virtually educating a large amount of students daily is a challenge unique to teachers.

Baldwin appreciates the hard work of the LLA teachers. “I just think the teachers at our school have done a wonderful job of trying to handle this, and I think that everyone should be patient with them because this is hard for them too.�

Encouraging and showing empathy towards everyone might be the best way to handle challenges presented by virtual learning.

Blast in Beirut

On August 4, 2020, the people in Beirut Lebanon experienced what is now called, “The Blast in Beirut.”

Prime minister Hassan Diab said that the blast was caused by a collection of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored unprotected in the warehouse by the bay. The blast reached a range of nine to ten kilometers. According to and killed about 190 people and injured about 6500 people .

“At first I didn’t really think about it but when I did think about it I was kinda sad because that’s where my family is from. My dad grew up a little ways from there and I was just sad and I was just praying for them and everyone and those affected by it were okay.”

In our community it all struck us very suddenly. Hannah Bahri (11th) was one of many families affected by this terrible tragedy and in her testament she said, “At first I didn’t really think about it but when I did think about it I was kinda sad because that’s where my family is from. My

dad grew up a little ways from there and I was just sad and I was just praying for them and everyone and those affected by it were okay.”

Alley Falvo (12th) has also expressed to me her feelings about this event, “At first I was confused as to what happened, but that quickly morphed into dismay and horror. I knew that Beirut was the main trading port in Lebanon, so it was where most of the population got the essentials they needed to live. The explosion basically cut off a life source for Lebanon’s people.”

There were mixed feelings from those who saw the tragedy from here.

Steven Medina was a resident in the area of where the blast took place.

A few weeks prior to the explosion Steven Medina had left Lebanon and was staying in the United States when the blast occurred. Medina explained 16

he was informed about the blast the first time, “I have a lot of on my Instagram so I was getting a few instagrams was the fastest way I heard about it. The students were sending me like direct pictures and stuff.” Steven Medina used to be an engineer but is now teaching in Lebanon on a missionary trip. Much damage has been done in Beirut Lebanon and the people have been affected by this greatly.

Even though we are so far from Lebanon we can help by donating to organizations to help those that are now homeless, starving, poor, etc. Lebanese Red Cross is a very big organization you can donate to so please, donate today to help the people of lebanon.

Briefs

There are many new additions to the Loma Linda Academy High School family: Sarah Bib, administrative assistant to the high school principal; Francisco Burgos-Suarez, Spanish teacher; Marjorie Ellenwood, English & History teacher; Duane Tan (Fix spelling), IT director.

Seniors had their first class vespers on October 2, 2020. The event was held on Loma Linda High School campus, and proper precautions such as: temperature checks, gloves, masks, and plenty of hand sanitizer, were made so that people could have fun, safe class vespers.

As of October 6, 2020, there have been 7,498, 345 Covid-19 cases in the United States and 210,230 Covid -19 related deaths. In San Bernardino County there have been 56,400 cases and 962 deaths.

Actor Chadwick Boseman unfortunately passed due to a 4 year long fight with colon cancer on August 28, 2020, at the age of 43. He was born on November 29, 1976. He is known for acting in Black Panther, 42, Get on Up, Avenger: Infinity War, 42, and many more. He inspired many and will be greatly missed.

During the PUC Publication Workshop, the Mirror won excellence in publishing, and the Lomasphere won excellence in coverage.

Naya Rivera passed away due to a drowning incident on Lake Piru, on July 8,2020. Rivera is best known for roles in Glee, Step Up, Devious Maids, and many more. She leaves behind her son and she will be greatly missed.
