Functional Latency

Arch 302 - Joshua Coggeshall - 8 weeks - MKM Student Design Competition Finalist

Latent: present but not visible, apparent, or activated; existing as potential.

ulation

Functional Latency, located west of the Fort Wayne Tin Cap stadium, was designed to allow for a diversity of programs to coexist and interact. Users have autonomy over their own spaces, from the layout of interiors to the intensity of sun shading devices. The composition of the floors and their varying ceiling heights create opportunity for expansion, growth, and flexibility. To that end, the interior layout has the capacity to be modi ed and changed in the future due to the absence of load bearing walls. The layout iteration within this representation consists of a mix of office spaces as well as civic spaces distributed across the seven stories. Office spaces are located on the second, fourth, and sixth floors with escalators spanning between. The vertical circulation allows for express connections linking such areas, while simultaneously giving users a glimpse of the interstitial spaces.

The tectonic language of the building is defined through a double skin façade that wraps around floors two through seven. Steel perforated panels sit on two layers of tracks to allow for movement, which allows for activation of spaces differently depending on user preference. The building is clad with polycarbonate glass and interior spaces are recessed from the edge of the building to allow for semi-exterior spaces. Such spaces are defined with a juxtaposition of the rectangular exterior and the rounded edges of the interior. sity of iors to create odifi ntation

New Office Building

For this project we were tasked with creating new idea for an Office building in downtown Indianapolis. The challenge was to create a latent design with a focus on an exoskeleton to allow for a column free space. The layout of this building was created by arranging three different office space heights: 13’-6”, 16’-6”, 23’-0”, with the goal to create outdoor spaces to be used by anyone around the offices. A diagrid was used to create the structure, as the building was inspired by the Urban Folly by NADAA, the building was then clad with the goal to create a sense of randomness and different shadows within each space, create a truly unique experience in each office area.
