“Mayyoubesurroundedbyfriendsandfamily, andifthatis not your lot, may the blessings find you in your solitude” -LeonardCohen

The main focus for this design is based on the El Salvadoran culture which values family and community. The design intent is to create a home-like setting for those who have immigrated from El Salvador and wish to be back home, however, due to their condition, they cannot. This hospice will be a place where everyone is free to gather andcelebratelife.

Inspired by the tropical forests of El Salvador, the goal is to create a calming space of peace and tranquility. This is achieved with the use of natural light and different tones of green and blue, which can be found in the elements and textures used within the space. Live greenery and ambient sounds of water bring life and uplifts the soul, while vibrant artworkandmuralsprovidefamiliarity.

Georgian Bay is known for its beautiful bedrock and environment which makes a perfect location for cottaging. For this design I will be harmonizing modern style and cottage elements, which will allow the space to feel unique, yet warm and cozy. The use of sustainable and local materials allow us to limit our carbon footprint and help the environment. These naturalmaterialswilladdtextureand interestwithinthespace.

Creating Unity through Contrast

The restaurants’ name Bavel comes from the word Babel, of the Old Testament. Babel, which was a city in the Middle East, was full of diverse cultures and languages. Similarly, Los Angeles is a city full of different cultures, communities and lifestyles.Although there are differences within the city, those differencesprovideunity, balanceandharmony.

Bavel, will be a peaceful environment where customers can feel welcomed. With the use of different shapes and lighting they will create spatial interest by highlighting the different textures. This will add depth to the design and atmosphere. The design will demonstrate how contrasting materials and textures work harmoniously to create a well balanced space. The use of natural materials and organic textures, alongside industrial metals and smooth tile-work will help achieve this in awellbalancedconcept.

Ching’s Form & Space Theory

Ching’s theory on space and form will guide me to achieve my concept and create a space that is aesthetically pleasing, yet functional. Throughout my design process, I will keep in mind the four spatial relationships when it comes to space planning, to create seamless flow. As well as highlighting the three principles of design (Balance, HarmonyandUnity).

Interlocking spaces
Adjacent spaces
Spaces linked by a common space

Bavel, is a Middle Eastern restaurant located in Downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District, which showcases the owners (Chef Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis) family lineage from Israel, Morocco, Turkey and Egypt. Bavel fuses the four different cultures in their cuisine, uniting the different cultures and communities ofLosAngelesthroughfood.
