PORTFOLIO

For our production for the course, I wanted to dig around the idea of doing a collaborative drawing that would be the continuity of a game tackled within the essay : The three lines games.
The possibilities of outcomes for this game are infinite : From the original idea of it as an open drawing session, I wanted this time to use that pratice to create a kind of artifact, a sensitive map of the EPFL campus.
However in this case the term «map» doesn’t signify the general idea that we would have of it as architects, but could be more defined as a glimpse into the University community’s vision of what is the campus, taking the shape of a collectively made fresco.
Furthermore, each person that comes to draw would have one only constraint : «draw me the campus with three Lines».
At first, even if I knew that I wanted to do a collaborative drawing, I didn’t really know how and where to do it. Thus Multiple options were possible :
- The initial idea I had was to pick a few places within the city, such as the cathedrale, some parks, the train station, ... and gather a few friends to come and make a three line game session, with another rule added : The line drawn should be inspired by the place we would have been drawing in, the goal of each session being the construction of a kind of portrait of the building or environnment ;
- Then, after some reflexions, a possibility could have been to go in the streets of Lausanne, doing three Lines games as «Happenings». The game is then open to anyone that wants to draw, and the rule would be to draw in three lines the place I would be doing the session (as an example «Draw me St François») going at special moment to capture the life within the city, for instance going for one session in Saint François on a wednesday morning when the food market is there ;
-The last idea I had, and the one I finally choose, was to go and do happenings over the campus. The rule however is staying the same for all the stops : «Draw me the campus with 3 Lines». The drawing’s base would be a 3m long sheet of paper, that I would unroll session after session.
For the happenings, I decided to use a metal frame found in the trash as the base to hold the paper sheet, that would also work as a portable stand. The paper sheet is a strip of wallpaper, also taken out the trash.
Following some reflexions about the locations, I finally decided to make stops at :
- The SwissTech Center (during lunch time),
- The Ada Lovelace Square (during an apéro d’archi),
- The Esplanade (during lunch time),
- The Rolex Learning Center (at 10 am on a Tuesday Morning).
The whole process has been recorded, as a video that will also be used for another course :
Création collective, arts-impro & Ingénierie, in which we had to create a video about the topic of improvisation within the creation of an artifact. It is available at >>>

During the different sessions I have made, the drawing was a way to better understand the people passing by :
Each person coming had its personal vision and feelings on what is the campus. Depending of the location of the stops, the elements drawn were differents, putting related but diverse worlds together, giving a glimpse into the diversity of people composing the campus.
Moreover all people drawing had a different interpretation of what a Line is, thus what drawing three line could actually be :
Some people drew dots, others drew three elements in three continuous Lines, some decided to represent three ideas, some didn’t follow the rule ...
All those ways were a great chance to capture not only the visions of the campus, but more deeply how people would behave towards the constraint of drawing three Lines, giving a deeper layer into the sensitive map.
Not just about representating, it is the whole moment and the procress of doing that actually matters.
Starting point
Often the curiosity brought by the game was a great opportunity to talk to strangers, discover about other people working at the EPFL, to know who there are, what section there are studying in and sometimes even more about themselves.
At the end, those sessions and the final drawing were a really great experience, in which I had the chance to meet nice and kind people, and open my own idea of what actually is the campus.
To conclude, I want to thank all the people that came and participated to the drawing, the help of Hiba Znaidi and Arla Williams for the filming, and Paul Schaffner for the music realised with a modular synth during a jam session.
