Gas Welding – What it is? Welding is a process which involves combining of two materials together. Usually done in cases of metals, welding is done with the help of heat to melt the molten ends and join them together by adding fillers to the molten part. Gas welding as the name suggests makes use of various kind of gases and oxygen to ignite a torch. Also known as oxyfuel welding, the most common gases used in this process are Propane, MAPP gas, natural gas, acetylene, liquefied petroleum etc. Anyways the most common gas used in this process is acetylene. This process was developed in 1903 and is today used in welding of pipes, tubes and is also used in repairing metals. When it comes to type of metals which can be joined using this method – almost all the metals can be welded using gases. The only point to remember is that not all the metals melt at the same temperature and thus one needs to keep this point in mind when resorting for the welding process.
Fuels used: As mentioned earlier, acetylene is the most commonly used fuel in gas welding. Other popular fuels are butane, propylene, gasoline and hydrogen. These fuels are usually mixed with oxygen to promote heat and melt the metals. When oxygen is mixed with the fuel the process is known as oxidation and is populary referred as combustion. One needs to always keep in mind that each gas has an unique property of its own. Thus one gas can not be used in all the purposes as its heat properties are different compared to
