Introduction

In 2014, LMC’s veterinary team refined a lifesaving rehabilitation process for sea turtles called TPN Therapy. This technique was designed to improve the odds of survival for critically ill sea turtle patients. Since we began using this technique, LMC significantly reduced the mortality rate of patients that arrived at our hospital with chronic debilitated illnesses. These illnesses were once thought to be terminal in sea turtles, however LMC has proven different. We have shared these techniques with the global scientific community and now critically ill sea turtles around the world now have a greater chance of survival. As one of the first people licensed by the State of Florida to conduct sea turtle nesting research, LMC’s founder, Eleanor Fletcher was a pioneer. LMC continues her legacy today by monitoring 9.5 miles of beach from North Palm Beach to the southern end of Jupiter Island. In 2014, LMC observed nearly 12,000 sea turtle nests on local beaches and these nests were responsible for producing approximately 1,500,000 baby sea turtles (hatchlings). The beaches that Eleanor discovered and LMC now monitors are among the most densely nested and bio-diverse sea turtle nesting grounds in the world. LMC continues to be one of the most visited cultural attractions in Palm Beach County. We also continue to offer free admission to our guests, as we believe every person should be given equal access to ocean conservation education. In 2014, we welcomed approximately 300,000 guests to our beautiful beachside campus. Our staff and volunteers educated nearly 30,000 school-aged children via field trips to our campus, as well as public and outreach programs.

For over thirty years, Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) has protected Florida’s coastal ecosystems and provided ocean conservation education to children, families, and visitors. 2014 marked a milestone year of growth, scientific development and expansion for our center. With the help of our staff, volunteers and patrons, we look forward to a vibrant and dynamic future.

We also continued the virtual classrooms program and connected with children in Europe and Asia, increasing our reach and educational impact across the world. One of the biggest additions to our portfolio this past year was the Juno Beach Pier. LMC had been a longtime collaborator with the pier and was chosen to take over operations in April, allowing us access to a new audience of over 60,000 annual visitors. In addition, we created a ground-breaking program called the Responsible Pier Initiative, which was designed to increase marine life awareness on and around fishing piers. More than 20 community piers in Florida signed up for this initiative and we have many others along the Eastern seaboard ready to participate in the near future. It is critical that we continue our important work to save a keystone species, the sea turtle, as well as protect our oceans and beaches. Loggerhead Marinelife Center has a proud history of providing families and visitors with an increased awareness of the world’s sea turtles and the oceans and beaches they call home. We hope our dedication is able to ignite your passion for our cause for many years to come. On behalf of our staff, volunteers, committee members and board of directors, thank you for your continued support.

Conservation

2014 was a year of tremendous growth for conservation efforts at Loggerhead Marinelife Center. Over the past year the center has continued to promote conservation of Florida’s coastal ecosystems through coastal and marine clean-up events, education and community outreach.

The results from this year’s initiative: Volunteer Participation: 157 Area Monitored: Northern Boundary of MacArthur Beach State Park to the Jupiter Inlet along with south end of Jupiter Island (9.5 miles) Time Period: May 1 - November 30, 2014 Total Items Removed from Project Area: 31,254

Responsible Pier Initiative LMC introduced the Responsible Pier Initiative (RPI) in 2013; a program designed to increase marine life awareness and work with recreational fishermen to provide them with the action steps to follow in the event a sea turtle becomes hooked or entangled. The Responsible Pier Initiative is comprised of the following:

• Educational signage and rescue nets displayed on

fishing piers • Educational workshops conducted for fishing piers’ first-responders and management • Underwater cleaning of participating piers and surrounding areas on a regular basis • Pollution prevention measures in place at participating piers In 2014, the RPI expanded across the state of Florida to 22 fishing piers in 9 different counties. Future plans for the initiative include expanding to the remaining piers in Florida, as well as to the Gulf of Mexico and Eastern Seaboard of the United States. This past year, 19 sea turtles were rescued from participating piers and 2,211 lbs. of debris were removed from areas surrounding and below piers. Trash Free Seas In 2014, LMC partnered with the Ocean Conservancy on their Trash Free Seas marine clean-up initiative. The program was initiated due to the limited data that currently exists on the amount and types of debris that nesting sea turtles encounter or what their hatchlings must overcome on their trek out to sea. Trash Free Seas is a citizen science program; allowing LMC volunteers and community members to participate and take an active, hands-on role in the battle of marine debris and sea turtle conservation. 4

Coastal Clean-Up This past year the center continued coastal clean-up efforts. LMC removed 1,147 lbs. of trash from local area beaches and removed 198 lbs. of debris from beneath the Juno Beach Pier. Juno Beach Pier In April 2014, LMC began management of the Juno Beach Pier with the purpose to expand responsible angling opportunities, elevate guest experience and promote the conservation of coastal, fishing pier environments. LMC has been actively involved at the Juno Beach Pier since its establishment in 1999. 1999 - Present: LMC staff respond, rescue & rehabilitate all sea turtles accidentally hooked or entangled at the pier. 2011: LMC began cleaning underneath the pier, removing 1,716 lbs. of marine debris to date.

2013: LMC launched the Responsible Pier Initiative at the Juno Beach Pier. 2014: LMC launched the Pollution Prevention Initiative in an effort to continue its battle against marine debris. This initiative is comprised of the following three primary components:

Juno Beach Pier

1. Prevent and reduce marine debris by providing adequate trash and recycling receptacles 2. Remove marine debris from the pier through underwater and beach clean-up events 3. Educate the general public on how marine debris impacts the local coastal environment and what actions they can take to make a difference Additionally, LMC added 8 commercial grade recycling bins to the Juno Beach Pier in 2014, initiating the first recycle program on a fishing pier in South Florida. Units Recycled, Juno Beach Pier June 2014 - December 2014 Item Units Recycled Plastic Bottle 11,444 Aluminum Can 6,829 Glass Bottle 192 Total 18,465

Education

The LMC education department continues to empower and inspire individuals to engage in the conservation of the world’s oceans by providing the knowledge and resources to take responsible actions. Education programs at LMC serve all ages, starting with the youngest in Hatchling Tales and ending with Science for Seniors. In 2014, over 40,000 individuals participated in education programming, creating life-long stewards of the coastal environment. With several new programs in place, such as Eco Snorkel Tours, Fish ID, Coastal Explorers, Living Beaches, Sleepovers, and Astronomy Nights, the education department now offers 28 distinct programs to students and visitors. To improve visitor experience, the center added signage throughout campus, as well as updated exhibitory in the Exhibit Hall. To further enhance oncampus education, docent development programs were held to train volunteers on the many assets and programs of LMC. In order to enhance service to our local community, the new position of Outreach Coordinator was added. With strong academic programs in place for students of Palm Beach County and with a diverse array of public program offerings, the education department felt it was important to focus on community outreach. The addition of this new position allowed LMC to host more on-campus events, attend numerous community events, and further develop school outreach programming.

Research

LMC has been conducting one of the longest running sea turtle monitoring programs in the State of Florida. For over thirty years, LMC’s research team has been systematically documenting the nesting sea turtle population along northern Palm Beach County beaches. The research department is comprised of two full time biologists and a seasonal crew of six field technicians and two interns.

The third species to nest is the green turtle, typically nesting from June through October. In 2014, LMC biologists recorded 988 green turtle nests along the survey area. This is a dramatic decrease from the 4,689 nests recorded in 2013; however, green turtles tend to nest in a saw-tooth pattern with alternating high and low years, so biologists anticipated a low year. LMC documented an estimated 104 green turtle nests per mile in 2014.

The three predominant species that nest on the east coast of Florida are leatherback, loggerhead & green sea turtles. LMC biologists conduct surveys along Juno, Jupiter, and Jupiter Island beaches from March through October every year. Each season, the research team documents all sea turtle activities along 9.5 miles of beach from the northern Palm Beach County line to John D. MacArthur Beach State Park. LMC’s survey area is along one of the highest density nesting beaches in the United States, with approximately 1,225 nests per mile in 2014. This was a busy season for the research team, resulting in 11,643 nests and 26,320 crawls.

The LMC research team collaborated with several conservation and educational facilities this past year. The center’s data manager traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, to attend the 34th Annual International Sea Turtle Symposium in April. LMC presented on 12 Years of Leatherback nesting in Palm Beach County. The effort was a collaboration between LMC and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The LMC research team also collaborated with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and students from Florida Atlantic University and University of Alabama. These collaborations and partnerships are a vital part of LMC’s continued efforts to be a leading center of excellence in sea turtle research.

The first species of sea turtles to nest on local beaches is the leatherback sea turtle, typically nesting from March through July. This season, LMC biologists recorded 268 leatherback nests, which is more than double the number recorded in 2013. Although leatherback nesting along the survey area didn’t break the record of 340 nests in 2009, the state of Florida saw a record number of leatherback nests this year. The beaches that LMC monitors are some of the highest density leatherback beaches in the state of Florida, with approximately 28 leatherback nests per mile in 2014. The most abundant species to nest along local beaches is the loggerhead sea turtle. Loggerheads typically nest from late April through September in Palm Beach County. This season LMC biologists recorded 10,387 loggerhead nests, which is a 28% increase from 2013. In peak nesting season, LMC biologists recorded close to 500 crawls in a single night. 8

Sea Turtle Rehabilitation

For over three decades, LMC has been committed to the rehabilitation of sick and injured sea turtles. LMC’s state-of-the-art hospital, founded by The Gordon & Patricia Gray Family, is one of the leading facilities in the state and a prime resource for sea turtle rehabilitation. It features a surgical suite, recently upgraded x-ray room and blood work lab, allowing numerous sea turtles to be examined and treated at LMC. Today, 50 volunteers work with 4 staff members to continue this vital, lifesaving program.

sea turtle is a rarity in Florida waters. Meghan was the only olive ridley sea turtle to strand this far north in Florida and the only one ever found in Palm Beach County, as the species typically lives around Central and South America. Meghan was the first case that allowed LMC staff to perfect this method of treatment, allowing the center to save many other sea turtles since her arrival. Meghan was released in December 2014 offshore in Key West. She was the first olive ridley sea turtle ever successfully rehabilitated in the state of Florida. Due to this success, LMC has been able to present on this therapy to colleagues around the globe.

LMC’s treatment protocol is “from rescue to release,” which means that sea turtle patients are released as soon as they are medically cleared. If a patient is deemed non-releasable, it will be transferred to a different facility. All of the sea turtle patients on campus are actively receiving treatment with the ultimate goal to allow each rehabilitated sea turtle back into the ocean as quickly as possible.

Additionally, in May, LMC’s rehabilitation department received a generous grant to purchase a cold laser unit. The Multiwave Locked System Therapy Laser is a class IV laser. This is an advanced therapeutic approach to treating wounds, pain, inflammation, and edema. This new high-tech tool is expected to decrease healing times and possibly reduce the use of medication, so that sea turtle patients can recover quicker and be released sooner. Laser treatment has already been used to treat several patients at the center for wound care and is already yielding positive results.

In 2014: • The hospital treated 62 green, Kemp’s ridley, olive ridley, and loggerhead sea turtles • The hospital treated 756 sea turtle hatchlings • 25 sea turtles and 523 hatchlings were released; 16 sea turtles remain in rehabilitation The scientific sea turtle community depends on likeminded organizations to share rehabilitation practices and techniques with each other to save the threatened and endangered sea turtle populations. To improve sea turtle rehabilitation this year, LMC developed an advanced therapy for treating chronically debilitated sea turtles, purchased a cold laser and installed a new deep water rehabilitation tank. In 2014, LMC refined a life-saving treatment called TPN Therapy. This program was designed to improve the odds of survival for the center’s most critically ill patients. Since the implementation of this treatment, the turtle mortality rate has dropped to near 0% for patients with chronic debilitated illnesses. This practice is now being shared with scientists around the world, including South America & Asia. The first sea turtle to successfully receive TPN Therapy treatments was LMC patient, Meghan. The olive ridley 10

Over the past year, Dr. Charles Manire, LMC’s Director of Research and Rehabilitation, has been traveling abroad sharing new findings and rehabilitation practices. He presented at conferences in Argentina and Australia, as well as various others in the United States. The presentations generated innovative discussions among veterinarians and biologists of aquatic animals from around the world. These findings and collaborations will help further the ever growing bank of knowledge on sea turtle rehabilitation, providing a hopeful outcome for future sea turtle populations. 2014 Released Patients: Atwell Bianca Captain Jack Chiquita Denver Dixon Flounder Gillbert Gobbles

Signature Events

Annual signature events that support programs in education, research and sea turtle rehabilitation. The Seventh Annual Lights Gala was held on LMC‘s beachside campus in February. The annual gala is a celebration of the start of sea turtle nesting season, when residents along the ocean are asked to turn out their bright lights for nesting sea turtles. Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception alongside the center’s sea turtle patients, a delicious dinner, and dancing under the stars. TurtleFest 2014, which celebrated ocean conservation and sea turtles, was held on campus in April and attended by more than 10,000 guests. TurtleFest featured free admission, beautiful art, an art contest, games, live music, bounce houses, a rock climbing wall, gymnastics and up close interactions with threatened and endangered sea turtles. The 21st Annual Loggerhead Invitational Golf Tournament was held at Seminole Golf Club in May and raised funds for the center. 128 golfers gathered for a competitive day on one of golf’s most exclusive private courses which was designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1928. A pre-tournament reception was held at Frenchman’s Creek Beach & Country Club. The Third Annual Run 4 The Sea hosted a recordbreaking crowd of 300 runners this past year. Held in June, the run featured a four-mile run, with a one-mile fun run afterwards for children. The race was held in beautiful Juno Beach, along the scenic Atlantic Ocean and A1A and celebrates ocean conservation and sea turtles. Race proceeds support Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s important mission. Marinelife Day and #LMCFashBash were both held in August at The Gardens Mall. For Marinelife Day, LMC went mobile for a kid-friendly, science-oriented experience that was educational and entertaining. Nearly 4,000 attendees stopped by to check out the interactive stations themed around sea turtle education, research, rehabilitation and conservation. Later that month, The Gardens Mall transformed into an extravagant world of couture, compassion, and personal style at LMC’s inaugural #LMCFashBash. The glamorous evening featured a fashion show, light bites, creative cocktails, and a luxury raffle. Proceeds from both events support LMC’s work in sea turtle research, rehabilitation, and education. 12

The Sixth Annual Go Blue Awards Luncheon was held in November at PGA National Resort & Spa, featuring world renowned aquanaut, Fabien Cousteau, as keynote speaker. A panel of judges selected the 2014 Go Blue Award recipients. Dr. Jeanette Wyneken, Laura Eldredge, Captain Rich Brochu, Christian, Derek, and Landon Petrisko, and Worth Avenue Association received awards for their extraordinary efforts in ocean conservation. The fundraiser was chaired by Lynne & Pete Wells and featured WPTV meteorologist, Glenn Glazer, as emcee.

Marketing & Communications There are many different ways to tell your story to people. Loggerhead Marinelife Center does this in various ways – appealing to a multitude of demographics. • Local and global news coverage • Monthly e-newsletters • Blue Friends Society • Adopt-a-Sea Turtle Program • Special events • E-Commerce Gift Store The sea turtle makes the perfect ambassador for Loggerhead Marinelife Center. This year, that sea turtle’s name was Meghan. Meghan was the first olive ridley sea turtle ever successfully rehabilitated in the state of Florida. She also was the first LMC patient to successfully receive TPN Therapy. Meghan was released in December 2014 offshore in Key West. Her release was covered by the Associated Press, MSN, Science Daily, Washington Post, and dozens of other nationwide news outlets. This type of media attention allows LMC to share ground-breaking, rehabilitation treatments and general information about the center to people around the world. Loggerhead Marinelife Center has a goal to grow and maintain a global marketing presence. The center established an international marketing plan which includes advertising in travel magazines, partnering with local hotels, and developing relationships with media who have a reach beyond Palm Beach County. Over the past year, LMC partnered with hotels such as PGA National Resort & Spa, Ritz-Carlton of Jupiter, Hilton Singer Island, Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort, Jupiter Beach Resort, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn, and others. These opportunities have drawn visitors from outside the county to visit and experience the center. Other opportunities included advertising in Boca Raton Observer, Hobe Sound and Tequesta Magazine, Florida Travel Guide, Florida Travel & Lifestyles, Jupiter Magazine, Palm Beach Illustrated and others. Loggerhead Marinelife Center made many efforts this year to increase diversity among audiences. One demographic that is typically not reached is the Millennials (a person reaching young adulthood around

the year 2000). For the second time, LMC participated in local music festivals, Coral Skies Music Festival and Tortuga Fest. Live Nation invited us to participate in Coral Skies and Guy Harvey invited us to participate in Tortuga Fest’s conservation village. Both organizations are wonderful supporters of the center. The events specifically targeted Millennials. Both events featured nationally-known musical acts, as well as food, drinks, and art. LMC had outreach tables at both events and spoke with over 30,000 people about what Loggerhead Marinelife Center does. The hope is that these Millennials will become engaged with LMC’s mission and vision and become ocean conservation ambassadors. One plan for increasing diversity among Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s audience in 2015 includes the translation of select educational materials to Spanish. LMC’s sea turtle mascot, Fletch, will be the main focus of translation. Fletch has educational materials including: cards, coloring books, activities on the center’s website and more. The Spanish translation plan will also extend to the center’s sea turtle adoption program. The goal is to translate these materials into Spanish to open a dialogue with a rarely reached demographic. These marketing plans and partnerships provide wonderful outlets for LMC, allowing the center to share the sea turtle’s important story with the world.

2014 Volunteer of the Year - Anja Burns This year, LMC’s volunteer of the year comes to us from the gift store. Anja has been a champion of Loggerhead Marinelife Center since 1990. For more than 20 years of volunteer service, Anja has donated over 15,000 hours to spreading Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s mission to promote conservation of Florida’s coastal ecosystems with a special focus on threatened and endangered sea turtles. In the past, Anja has volunteered for every department at Loggerhead Marinelife Center during her many years of service. Her focuses have included sea turtle releases, education docent shifts, greeting visitors as they arrive to the center, facilitating outreach programs and managing pop-up gift stores. In previous years, Anja staffed a table at Sailfish Marina on a weekly basis and sold her underwater photographs to benefit Loggerhead Marinelife Center. Anja currently volunteers for two shifts per week in the gift store. Anja shows great initiative and is always looking around to see what she can do to help in the gift store and around the center. Anja has been one of the most loyal and dependable volunteers Loggerhead Marinelife Center has ever had, validated by her dedication in each department. Her passion for the health and well-being of sea turtles as well as ocean conservation has been her life-long mission. She has demonstrated this through over twenty years of volunteer service at Loggerhead Marinelife Center. She has been a great friend to us all through her entire volunteer career. It is because of wonderful and dedicated volunteers, like Anja, that we are able to continue our important work. We thank Anja for being such a great addition to the LMC volunteer team.
