Loggerhead Marinelife Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to the conservation of Florida’s coastal ecosystems through public education, research and rehabilitation with a focus on threatened and endangered sea turtles.

The core of Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s mission.

April 4, 2011 marked the 22nd time endangered leatherback sea turtle “Juno” returned to nest on area beaches. Throughout leatherback nesting season, which runs from March to July on Florida’s east coast, she returned an additional five times, laying her 27th nest on June 2, 2011. This 7-foot sea turtle is one of 24 leatherbacks first tagged by Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) biologists in 2001 during the Leatherback Research Project’s inaugural year. When staff biologists first watched Juno crawl ashore to nest on June 11, 2001, they couldn’t have predicted her record-setting loyalty to the beach or to the project, but perhaps someone else did. Former Juno Beach mayor and longtime LMC leadership volunteer Frank W. Harris watched Juno nest on the beach that evening. He named Juno after the town where thousands of sea turtles lay their nests each year. Juno Beach is also the headquarters of LMC. The same loyalty that Juno the leatherback exhibits to nest in the area has also been demonstrated by volunteers, donors, visitors, and friends of Loggerhead Marinelife Center, and will continue to perpetuate LMC’s growth and progression into 2012 and beyond.

• In collaboration with Jupiter Dive Center, over 785 pounds of trash was removed from beneath the Juno Beach Pier through quarterly pier dives. • The Blue Friends Society worked with corporations, groups, schools, families and individuals to collect over 1,200 pounds of trash from Juno Beach through monthly beach clean-ups.

Our Mission

A Defining Moment Dear Friends of Loggerhead Marinelife Center, The oceans face incredible peril and it’s Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s charge to make a difference. In 2011, we complemented our ongoing conservation efforts with new programs, involving community partners in cleanup projects that removed nearly 2,000 pounds of trash from local beaches and from beneath the Juno Beach Pier. This type of community support has allowed us to grow exponentially from a modest, one room office above a real estate business to a 12,000 square foot campus that welcomes 215,000 annual visitors. The continued passion that the community, our visitors, and our donors have for our cause is humbling, as is the work of volunteers who have assisted with the center’s daily operations since it opened in 1983. In recent years, the nonprofit landscape has grown increasingly competitive. Furthermore, a challenging economy has placed greater pressure on nonprofit organizations while simultaneously limiting resources and access to funding. At LMC, we’ve always worked to differentiate ourselves amongst many other worthwhile causes. Our Board of Directors works continuously to ensure we are able to offer free admission to our

guests. We believe every person should be given equal access to conservation education. Additionally, we have worked over the past year to recruit talented staff members and volunteers with varied backgrounds. In 2011, we welcomed seven new staff members who each bring different talents and passions to the organization. Our volunteer base grew by 35% and our recruitment process was significantly modified to attract volunteers with an array of skills. From these new faces, we’re getting a fresh approach to what we do. The result is a colorful culture where no idea is ever too big or small and where every opinion matters. Our vision is to be recognized locally and internationally as the leading authority in sea turtle education, research and rehabilitation. From ground-breaking technologies designed in-house to study the movements of endangered sea turtles in the open ocean, to prolific applications of human medical techniques to save threatened and endangered sea turtles, we pave the way toward our vision each day. In 2011, our programs achieved recognition by the Associated Press, Yahoo! News, AOL News, UK Daily Mail, BBC World News, and several other top news outlets.

More than one in three patients treated at LMC in 2011 suffered from injuries caused by human impacts, emphasizing the growing need for organizations that save our seas. As we move forward, we will continue to passionately execute our mission to promote conservation of Florida’s coastal ecosystems with a special focus on threatened and endangered sea turtles. Strategic planning has armored us with the tools we need to elevate our competencies in education, research and rehabilitation to the next level.

To promote conservation of Florida’s coastal ecosystems with a special focus on threatened and endangered sea turtles.

Thank you for your continued support.

Education. The starting point for what we work toward every single day. Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s commitment to providing conservation education is deeply rooted in its beginnings. Eleanor Fletcher, founder of LMC, used a small room above her husband’s real estate office as a makeshift classroom to teach children about the importance of ocean conservation. Today LMC continues Ms. Fletcher’s commitment to education, welcoming thousands of school-aged children each year. As the oceans have faced greater threats in recent years, LMC’s dutiful work to educate has grown. In March 2011, the Marshall E. Rinker, Sr. Foundation Children’s Research Station opened at LMC to give children ages 6-12 a hands-on conservation learning experience. When students attend the program, they become conservationists complete with lab coats, name tags, life-like rubber sea turtles, and veterinary instruments similar to those used in the Gordon & Patricia Gray Veterinary Hospital. The children attend an engaging volunteer-led lesson and learn what it’s like to care for a sea turtle from rescue to release. In April 2011, LMC presented TurtleFest: Exploring Cultural Conservation. Over 12,000 guests learned about seven regions of the world and the seven different species of sea turtles. Guests of all ages enjoyed a Global Village where they could learn how other countries are promoting conservation through experiential activities. For the first time in its eight year history, the event featured a theme, an artist row, and a partnership with world renowned Conservation International. Other public programs were incorporated into LMC’s schedule throughout the year. Visitors attended free events such as Endangered Species Day, Earth Day, World Ocean’s Day, TurtleWeen, Blue Friday, and a Holiday Celebration. These programs offered wet and dry labs, story times, recycled materials proj6

ects, interactive learning opportunities, and more. A PADI ProjectAWARE Sea Turtle Awareness Distinctive Specialty Course was offered in conjunction with Jupiter Dive Center to inform divers about the importance of sea turtles to marine biodiversity. Education was also at the core of the center’s Junior Marine Biologist Camp. In 2011, camp curriculum was revamped to provide an incredible learning experience for more than 300 children ages 7 to 17. The annual Turtle Walk program sold-out again in 2011. Participants of all ages attended late-night lectures at the campus where they were able to see a female loggerhead sea turtle lay her eggs, cover them up, and make her journey back to sea. The experience gave many guests a better understanding of the plight of threatened and endangered sea turtles. Through its array of educational offerings, including field trips, birthday parties, public programs, special events, lecture series, and more, LMC’s Education Department continues to demonstrate a commitment to promoting conservation of Florida’s coastal ecosystems. Volunteer docents facilitate one-on-one interactions with 215,000 annual visitors. Education is the foundation of the visitor experience.

Research. Conducted on one of the most important nesting beaches in the world. Since 1990, Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s team of biologists has surveyed northern Palm Beach County beaches to document sea turtle nesting activity. Each season, the crew counts every nest laid on the beach and maps its GPS coordinates. A significant number of nests are marked and tracked throughout incubation, revealing hatch success and providing insight to the population of each species. The 2011 survey area extended 9.8 miles from the northern Palm Beach County line south to MacArthur Beach State Park. In 2011, LMC biologists documented 23,349 sea turtle crawls on Juno, Jupiter, and Tequesta beaches. Loggerhead sea turtles laid 7,674 nests within the survey area, down just slightly from 2010. Loggerhead nest numbers have continued to increase since 2006. Endangered green sea turtles laid 1,904 nests in 2011, nearly tying the 2010 record of 1,926 nests. Leatherbacks also had their second-highest year on record with 278 nests, falling just short of 340 nests set in 2009. The AWC Family Foundation donated two new ATV’s allowing biologists to continue their nest monitoring work. Staff biologists completed the 11th season of their Leatherback Research Project in 2011. The project allows the team to understand the leatherback population size, to learn more about basic leatherback biology and nesting behaviors, and to understand how human behaviors are impacting the population both locally and worldwide. In 2011, biologists encountered 125 individual leatherbacks on nightly surveys from March through June. Since the project began, biologists have tagged 472 individual leatherbacks. Leatherbacks first appeared on Florida beaches with regularity in the 1970s and LMC’s research data reveals an exponential increase in local nesting since 2001. In 2010, the Leatherback Research Project evolved to include a multi-year tracking study designed to understand leatherback 8

movement, dive behavior, and the threats posed by boating and shipping traffic. A full dive profile is created as leatherbacks travel coastal waters in between nests. This continuing project incorporates new technologies designed by LMC’s staff. The efforts of LMC biologists to help a leatherback turtle nest without her rear flippers were caught on camera in June. Soon after, CNN shared footage of “Clover” around the world. Top media markets stretching from San Francisco to Boston picked up the story allowing LMC to share its compassionate work and research findings with a vast audience. Months later, the world took notice again as Hurricane Irene threatened the eastern coast of the U.S. and LMC biologists worked diligently to document the loss of 2,300 nests and approximately 234,600 eggs. The Research Department collaborated with several facilities in 2011. Among the collaborations were University of South Florida, University of Wisconsin, University of Georgia, NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center, NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center, and US Geological Survey. The team also hosted classes from University of Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast University. Staff biologists collaborated with a NOAA wildlife veterinarian to study the use of ultrasound technology and blood analysis to assess health and body condition in leatherback turtles. Dr. Heather Harris will work with the team in 2012 as part of a two-year study to compare the Research at a Glance: health of turtles on nest• Total number of eggs ing beaches with those at foraging grounds. produced – 1,000,000+ These collaborations • Total number of hatchlings could help to further unreaching the water – 400,000+ lock data that would al• Sea turtle crawls – 23,349 low sea turtles to thrive in future generations.

Loggerhead Marinelife Center began rehabilitating sick and injured sea turtles in 1983. In 2007, the on-site Gordon and Patricia Gray Veterinary Hospital was opened, significantly improving the rehabilitation program’s efficiencies while also expanding its size and scope with the addition of a surgical suite and an xray room. Today, 81 volunteers work with five rehabilitation employees to carry out this lifesaving program which has released over 1,000 turtles since it began. The hospital treated 76 green, hawksbill, Kemp’s ridley and loggerhead sea turtles in 2011 as well as 1,568 hatchlings. Of those patients, 28 sea turtles and 1,057 hatchlings were medically cleared for release and given a second chance at life in the ocean. Unfortunately, 36 patients succumbed to their illnesses or injuries once admitted to the hospital, 39% of which passed away within 48 hours of their arrival. A new rescue vehicle was purchased through the generosity of the AWC Family Foundation and the Fleming Family Foundation allowing staff to respond to strandings. As of January 1st, 12 patients remained in treatment in 2012. Under the guidance of LMC’s staff veterinarian, the rehabilitation team worked to integrate the use of cutting-edge technologies into the treatment plans of several patients in 2011. Kinetic Concepts, Inc., a San Antonio-based company that specializes in technologies and therapies designed to make wound healing manageable for caregivers and more comfortable for patients, worked with LMC’s veterinarian on the first ever implantation of Strattice™ Reconstructive Tissue Matrix in an animal. Strattice™ is an acellular dermal matrix that acted as a scaffold until the sea turtle’s wounds were revascularized and repopulated with its own functional, living tissue. Additionally, while not intended for use on underwater animals, KCI’s V.A.C.® Therapy proved instrumental in the treatment of 10

five patients’ wounds in 2011. V.A.C.® Therapy promotes healing by delivering negative pressure at the wound site. KCI’s team worked with LMC to retrofit the device to ensure its effectiveness in each patient’s underwater environment. For the first time, LMC incorporated the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and orthodontics into its patients’ treatment plans in 2011. Working with community partners Equine Hyperbaric Center of South Florida and Vargas Orthodontics, new procedures were tried in order to facilitate improved wound management. The world took notice of LMC’s pioneering rehabilitation work. Stories of its patients and their innovative therapies were publicized by the Associated Press, Yahoo! News, AOL News, The Today Show, Thomson Reuters, MSNBC, NPR, South West News Service, UK Daily Mail, CNN, BBC World News, and Nightline, and at the network level for ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC.

Rehabilitation. Improving patient care and success rates through innovation.

Several additional organizations also collaborated with LMC’s Rehabilitation Department in 2011. Veterinarians from NOAA, Sea World, Disney World, Georgia Sea Turtle Center, Mote Marine Laboratory, and Clearwater Aquarium met at LMC to discuss facility, husbandry and medical care of fibropapiloma sea turtles in Florida. A sea turtle rehabilitation training series produced in-house for LMC volunteers and staff is being used at Volusia Marine Science Center, Museum of Discovery and Science, Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and others. An alarming 36% of the turtles treated in 2011 were diagnosed with injuries caused by human impacts, either through boatstrikes or fisheries interactions. This grim reality indicates the continued need for promoting conservation awareness with LMC’s 215,000 annual visitors. The ocean will never be free from threats to sea turtles, but the innovative rehabilitation work carried out by LMC in collaboration with its network of community partners inspires hope for a better tomorrow.

Loggerhead Marinelife Center hosted several signature events in 2011 to support its programs in education, research and rehabilitation. The Fourth Annual Lights Out Gala was held in February to raise money for LMC’s programs. Chaired by Susan Johnson and Elizabeth Neuhoff, the event was themed “Under the Sea Soiree.” The gala recognized Everglades Foundation Vice Chairman Nathaniel Reed and his wife Alita for their visionary conservation work and dedication to restoring the Florida Everglades. Honorary Chairs were Gordon and Patricia Gray.

The 18th Annual Loggerhead Invitational Golf Tournament was held at Seminole Golf Club in May and raised funds for LMC. The afternoon brought together 128 golfers for a competitive day on the par 72 course, which was designed by Donald Ross and first opened in 1929. Sabadell Bank & Trust, formerly known as Lydian, became the tournament’s first-ever presenting sponsor in 2011.

Through news coverage, special events, campus tours, newsletters, the Blue Friends Society and donor development, Loggerhead Marinelife Center is able to bring awareness to its programs. In 2011, LMC welcomed an additional 1,355 Facebook fans to its growing network, making for a community of 6,410. Post views on the social networking site grew by 1,568% and interactions increased by 289%. Additionally, LMC’s Twitter following rose by 240%. Similarly, visitors to marinelife.org increased by 194% over 2010. An e-commerce site was launched at marinelife.org/shop so people could support LMC through gift

shop purchases no matter their location. The plight of LMC’s sea turtles was publicized in news outlets stretching from Los Angeles to New York in the United States, as well as Canada, London, Tokyo and Sao Paulo, Brazil, and other international locations. Stories that generated such coverage were LMC’s use of orthodontics to manipulate fractures in a sea turtle’s shell; the use of KCI’s Strattice™ and VAC Therapy to heal patients; the innovative application of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to rehabilitate sea turtles; the double release of two loggerhead sea turtles in Juno Beach; and the compas-

sionate work of LMC biologists to help a leatherback sea turtle nest. Popular children’s series Aqua Kids also highlighted LMC’s work in two full-length episodes. Clothing company vineyard vines® brought further international awareness to LMC by selecting the organization as a “Tied to a Cause” partner through its design of custom ties and tote bags to benefit the organization. Sharing LMC’s story paves the way towards its vision to be recognized locally and internationally as the leading authority in sea turtle education, research and rehabilitation.

The Eighth Annual TurtleFest: Exploring Cultural Conservation was held in April and included live music, bounce houses, gymnastics, hair braiding, face painting, and games & activities for children. For the first time, TurtleFest featured a theme, fine art area, Global Village, scavenger hunt, and an exhibit by the Palm Beach County Surfing History Project. Free admission for the event’s 12,000 guests was courtesy of five presenting sponsors. The 3rd Annual Go Blue Awards Luncheon was held in October and chaired by Lynne and Pete Wells. A panel of judges selected five 2011 Go Blue Award recipients. Jim Abernethy, Steven Allen, Susan J. Murray, Joe Zavertnik, and Rapid Removal received awards for their efforts to directly or indirectly support LMC’s mission.
