MISSION TEAM 18 Our Mission:

Our mission as Mission Team 18 is to gain and share our vast and col

perspectives on the complexities of mental health. Deepening our co widens the array of understanding about the interconnected nature

thoughts and behaviors. To eventually share the ideas and knowledg

broadens the collective understanding of mental health and helps d

reassure, and support those who may not totally understand themsel

Our Vision:

The general public strongly promotes the active maintenance of phy

while little emphasis is placed on the mental. We, as mental health a to see a world with people who are safer, more understanding, and

comfortable with themselves and others, and to do this requires a ho

understanding of a person's wellbeing. Conversations, active promot

advocation are the best ways to support others and ourselves, and w

this experience with others so we can all feel safer, more secure, an

NGSC REC

CHARGE HIKE With the help of the Events Committee and Mission Team 18, NGSC students were taken on a hike to Fremont Saddle by the Peralta Canyon Trail to help those suffering from "being-acollege-student" destress after midterms. Midterms and exam season are some of the largest sources of stress and anxiety for college students, so we wanted to plan for a healthy, satisfying, and relaxing

way to alleviate tension in the NGSC

student body.

Green spaces and nature are natural stress relievers, and according to Mental Health Colorado.org, "Proximity to green space has been associated with lower levels of stress and a reduction of symptoms for depression and anxiety."

Taking

stressed college students out on a hike is the perfect balance to relieving stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms and one's physical well-being.

COOKING NIGHT & DISCUSSION In our Team's attempt to open up more opportunities to promote health and overall wellbeing, we held a cooking seminar over Zoom. Creating dishes and meals after a long day at work sounds unappealing and a source for more stress, but there lie a number of emotional and physical benefits to doing so.

According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, cooking is a great way to stimulate all of your senses and temporarily detach from the world. Pleasant aromas, the sound of a sizzling pan, and the mere chopping of an ingredient puts one in a position of control and comfort that ultimately lowers stress and anxious feelings.

We wanted to bring these benefits to the NGSC student body so people may experience a new and healthy way of alleviating stress. Mission Team member, Kaylee Kallas, cooked a healthy meal of lettuce wraps to promote nutritional and physical health. A short discussion on the stigmatization of mental health was held after the cooking portion in an effort to start conversations regarding how mental health is so often negatively portrayed and represented.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL MURAL PAINTING Hospitalization is an extremely stress and anxiety-inducing event for anybody, let alone a child. Adolescents are still developing and learning about the world, and to place them in such a constrained and closed environment shuts them out from optimal levels of stimulation children their age should be receiving. The Foundation for Hospital Art is an organization that aims to bring comfort and solace to children in hospital through beautiful and elaborate art pieces. We collaborated with this foundation, as well as The W.P. Carey School of Business to paint three separate murals to be later donated to local children's hospital.

NGSC students came together on Saturday, March 19th to relax and paint canvases which were mere pieces of the full mural to later be donated and hung. The therapeutic practice of painting coupled with the meaningful purpose behind the labor ultimately captures the essence of our goal as a mission team dedicated to mental health and wellness and amplifies that quality to all those who participate or are affected by the artworks.

MENTAL HEALTH DISCUSSION SERIES It's our Mission Team's belief that if given the opportunity, holding an open and deep conversation about certain mental health topics is greatly beneficial for not only those who need to say something, but for the general reputation for mental health. For too long, mental health issues have been overlooked, placed in the back seat, and even associated with violent tendencies. Our goal for this discussion series is to educate others about the experiences we have had while dealing with ours and others' behaviors.

Each discussion surrounds a different topic related to mental health, including living through a pandemic, anxiety and anxiety disorders, veteran's health, and homeless health. Each one is guided by a different NGSC member with a different passion correlating to the psyche which remains consistent with the ultiamte goal of sharing perspectives and experiences so we may all collectively work to destigmatize the subject and bring forth an era of understanding and empathy.

SECTION 6 MENTAL HEALTH PANEL For this event, Mission Team 18 collaborated with the two other teams within our section, Mission Team 16: Public Health, and Mission Team 17: Mental Health - West, to host a panel over Zoom in relation to a number of mental health topics. Depression, anxiety, mindfulness, communicating, and destigmatization were the foremost topics discussed at the panel, for which three uniquely experienced guest panelists offered their knowledge and advice on said topics. The panelists were comprised of Dr. Jeni Green, Gregory Carnesi, and Dev Patel, who all contribute a unique perspective and experience regarding mental health and its complexities. A series of five preconceived questions as well as a couple of others from the Zoom chat were fielded to the panelists, which are listed below:

1. How have you found mindfulness to be helpful in dealing with mental health struggles? 2. How can we talk to our parents/loved ones about our mental health struggles without making them feel like it’s their fault we are struggling? Or without feeling embarrassed ourselves? 3. How can we find the time to meditate and practice mindfulness in our busy schedules? Do you have any tips? 4. How can we help with friends who we see are struggling with their mental health? 5. What resources do you recommend for mindfulness and/or improving mental health?

These questions were written with a more personal theme to encourage the panelists to share their deep, individual experiences unique to them. Vulnerability, open communication, and a willingness to seek help were consistently emphasized by the panelists, and are ideas and values our section very clearly wants to emphasize in all eour effots to discourage shying away from talking about mental health.
