What’s on at Logan Art Gallery February, March and April 2019

Welcome Logan Art Gallery is one of the most dynamic regional galleries in South-East Queensland, showcasing the best local and touring art, craft, and design exhibitions. Be inspired by practical art workshops and exhibition talks, find beautiful, locally made artworks in the Gallery Store or the Creative Markets, and enjoy the activities in the Young Peoples Gallery. We look forward to seeing you at the gallery.

Venue hire and group bookings Logan Art Gallery, including its creative arts workshop, is available for private and community functions and events.

Large groups are encouraged to call and inform us of their intended visit. Logan Art Gallery staff will provide free tours to interested groups that book at least a week in advance of their visit.

Groups can also book practical activities to further enhance their visit.

Activities Meet the artists and participate in free events, activities and talks held in conjunction with the exhibition program.

• All children will need to be signed in and out by a parent, adult guardian or carer.

• Parents or carers are to remain with children aged seven and under.

• Closed-in shoes must be worn by all activity participants.

Note that there is a limit of three workshop bookings per person per exhibition round.

Jun Chen: Landscapes

Rigid and soft presents a series of vivid and semi-abstract oil paintings which capture the beauty of Chinese and Australian flora. By painting different floral landscapes, artist Ping Li illustrates her journey of migration to Australia.

A major solo exhibition by renowned Woodridge-based artist, Jun Chen, focusing on his paintings of Australian landscapes.

Tien Ting Fang: Our forests

Positive mindset: create, connect, chat

Our forests is an immersive installation of large-scale oil paintings which depict a wild forest changing through different seasons.

In the artist’s words: ‘each of us has our own forest within us, an internal, deep and vast beauty. Once appreciated and nourished, only then will the forest thrive proudly to grow great and powerful’.

This exhibition showcases a selection of students’ work from the Positive mindset creative arts festival over the last three years. The festival uses creative arts to promote mental wellbeing and reduce the stigma of mental illness and addiction issues in young people.

18 January to 2 March 2019 — Exhibitions Phuong Ly: Beloved cities In this exhibition, Loganholme artist Phuong Ly presents a series of watercolour paintings, which portray iconic landscapes from Logan and Brisbane.

Saturday 2 February, 10am Join exhibiting artist Jun Chen for an informative tour through the exhibition Landscapes. Enjoy watching Jun Chen demonstrate his painting skills and techniques.

En plein air master class: Outdoor painting in oils with artist Richard Blundell Richard Blundell, Planchon Gums, 2013, oil on linen canvas

Two day master class with artist and educator Richard Blundell Day 1: Tuesday 5 February, 10am to 4pm Day 2: Tuesday 12 February, 10am to 4pm Plein air painting, or painting outdoors, provides valuable opportunities for manifesting visual, physical and conceptual responses to the landscape in painting. An intrinsic component of this workshop is actually painting in the outdoors directly from life in oil paint on canvas. Join artist and educator Richard Blundell for this two-day master class and complete oil paintings dealing directly with landscape subjects.

Australian native flowers: Oil painting workshop with artist Ping Li

Friday 8 February, 10am to 4pm Enjoy this workshop for adults focusing on still life, in particular Australian native flowers. Watch a demonstration on how to paint native flowers, and create your own oil painting on canvas.

Public access to the printing press

Wednesday 13 February, between 10am and 4pm Logan Art Gallery will provide free access to the workshop’s medium-sized printing press. Experience in using a printing press is essential as this is a non-tutored session.

Landscapes: Painting workshop for children

Tuesday 19 February, 3.30pm to 4.45pm Enjoy the work of landscape artists Tien Ting Fang and Jun Chen. Learn how to create your own large-scale Australian landscape in acrylic paint.

Create your own tote bag: with artist Ping Li

Wednesday 27 February, 10am to 1pm Enjoy a demonstration of the entire bag-making process by artist Ping Li. Create your own design from the range of colourful Japanese fabrics supplied. Cut and get ready for sewing at home.

NOTE: Gallery sewing machines will be used.

8 March to 27 April 2019 — Exhibitions Robert MacPherson: Boss Drovers Robert MacPherson is one of Australia’s most highly regarded contemporary artists.

The exhibition comprises approximately 200 drawings from the complete set of 2,400 portraits that make up his largest ever work, titled Boss Drovers. Viewers are encouraged to see this work as MacPherson’s lament for the disappearance of the specialised knowledge, language and history that these working people of the land carried with them.

Nancy Brown and F.S. Helfisch: Archaeology Archaeology presents an immersive installation of paintings, sculpture, prints and objects which explores the process of creating artwork as a form of personal archaeology.

Sandra Pearce: Fading to grey In this exhibition artist Sandra Pearce contemplates how destructive changes to her local environment have impacted her personal relationship with the natural world. Her exhibition Fading to grey includes diverse art forms including monoprinting, papercutting and sculpture to encourage the viewer to consider their own impact on the environment.

Fresco painting for adults: with artists Nancy Brown and F.S. Helfisch

Friday 15 March, 10am to 4.30pm Fresco painting is one of the earliest forms of painting that dates from the Bronze Age across Europe, Egypt, Persia, India and Sri Lanka. During this workshop you will create a fresco piece, working into freshly laid lime plaster with pigments. You will also explore fresco painting onto embossed, cast and poured plaster surfaces, which can also be incised and carved.

Memory vessels: create a cloth and paper vessel with artist Sandra Pearce

Saturday 23 March, Session 1: 10am to 1pm Session 2: 1.30pm to 4.30pm Inspired by Sandra’s exhibition, create a small cloth and paper vessel with mark-making and texture that reflects your personal memories of a special natural place such as a local forest reserve, creek or your own garden.

Note: Please bring images (on smartphone or tablet) and/or found objects from a special natural place.

Friday 12 April, 10am to 2.30pm Learn the ancient art of fresco by painting pigments onto freshly poured plaster surfaces. You will create fresco pendants and sculptural objects that are cast from plaster and then painted and carved.

Arts grants now available Are you a performing or visual artist or do you work in a museum or the creative industries? Do you have a fabulous idea for a one-off arts project that needs funding?

Applications are now open for the next round of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) and will close on Monday 11 March 2019. Individuals, groups and organisations can apply for grants up to $8,000 per project.

Arts professionals from all art forms including dance, music, design, museum and cultural heritage, new media, visual arts, writing and theatre are encouraged to apply.

Returning from their music exchange tour in September last year, members of the Logan Youth Music Exchange (LYME) will perform a repertoire of Chinese music to celebrate Chinese New Year and complement the exhibitions on display by four artists originally from China.

Australia’s colourful history of droving has been captured in bush poetry and ballads. Come and immerse yourself in an afternoon at Logan Art Gallery amongst the 200 drawings from the current exhibition Boss Drovers and be entertained by Logan Performance Bush Poets Wayne Caldwell and Geraldine King.

Making arts accessible Art and dementia program: for visitors with dementia and their carers Logan Art Gallery offers discussion-based tours of works of art for people with dementia and their carers. Facilitated by our trained volunteers, the participants are encouraged to contribute their knowledge, engage in interpretation, express emotions and recall memories. Involvement in this nationwide program has been shown to increase wellbeing and the quality of life for participants.

Practical art workshops can be provided after the tour, for people who enjoy a hands-on experience.

Logan Art Gallery Store Logan Art Gallery Store has a range of unique gifts and collectables—perfect for a special occasion. Items for sale include textiles, handmade jewellery, books, glassware, woodware and gift cards.

Descriptive exhibition tours: for vision impaired visitors Join us for a descriptive tour of the current exhibitions. The tour is aimed at providing vision impaired visitors with an experience of the exhibited works through spoken description. The tours are the outcome of training provided by Vision Australia.
