SWOOPING SEASON IS HERE We are currently in the midst of magpie swooping season but did you know a number of other species also swoop including the Butcherbird, Torresian Crow and Noisy Miner?

Swooping is a natural behaviour by birds protecting eggs and newly-hatched young from intruders, however, there are a number of things you can do to keep safe including: • To take alternative routes to keep clear of breeding areas • Protect yourself from contact by wearing a hat and sunglasses • If you are riding, add spikes (zip ties) to your helmet as a deterrent or dismount and walk if you are being swooped • Never harass or provoke magpies or plovers as this may lead to increased aggression • Do not feed the birds or leave any food in the area.

Council’s ‘Live Well Logan’ program offers a variety of physical activities and healthy living programs for everyone to enjoy. These activities are a great way to get active, enjoy our parks and local facilities as well as meet new friends in your local community.

Activities include boot camps, aqua aerobics, yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, walking groups and much more, with many activities costing only $3 per session while others are free.

Our libraries, parks and animal services also host a fantastic range of activities throughout the year. If you haven’t visited one of Logan City Council’s award winning libraries, I encourage you to take some time to check out the great programs they have on offer such as computer classes, book clubs, homework help programs, exciting school holiday activities and so much more.

In this month’s edition of Our Logan, we profile the South-East Queensland Stars, a team boasting some of Australia’s elite women basketballers who will be looking to make an impact on the Women’s National Basketball League in its first season.

The Stars will launch their inaugural season at Logan Metro Sports Centre on Friday 9 October — against last season’s grand finalists, the Bendigo Spirit.

Also in this month’s edition, we preview the Artwaves exhibition at Logan Art Gallery where more than 150 students will display their work, giving us a glimpse of the emerging creative talents we have coming through our city’s high schools.

STARS ALIGN FOR BASKETBALL IN LOGAN Some of Australia’s most talented women’s basketball players will be looking to make a stellar debut for South-East Queensland this month when the 2015/16 Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) season tips off.

The South-East Queensland Stars will launch their inaugural season at Logan Metro Sports Centre on Friday 9 October against last season’s grand finalists, the Bendigo Spirit.

Amy Lewis, former captain of the WNBL club Adelaide Lightning, will bring further experience to the team, one which league pundits are predicting to be a top four contender in its first season.

The re-emergence of elite women’s basketball in Logan comes after the exit of Logan Thunder from the WNBL in 2014.

Earlier this year, the team’s name was decided after a public competition and — judging by its player roster — the Stars is an apt title.

The 2,200-capacity Logan Metro Sports Centre will be the home court and training facility for the team, hosting 11 home games in the 24 game season that runs from October to February.

Three Opals players will line-up in the squad, including two-time WNBA champion and Olympian Erin Phillips, WNBA star Rachel Jarry and Rebecca Allen.

The Stars’ home games will feature four Friday night games, two Saturday night games and five Sunday afternoon games (starting at 4pm).

Local fans will be encouraged to dress up and get behind the Stars for themed games that will be played on Friday the 13 November, the Australia Day weekend and Valentines Day. Tickets to games can be purchased online for as little as $10 each and memberships are priced from $120 for 12 home games.

ULA courts success at home and overseas Seeing the stars of Australian basketball up close will provide plenty of inspiration for emerging basketball talent Ula Motuga.

But the 15-year-old has already enjoyed her fair share of inspirational moments in recent times.

Last year, Ula helped Canterbury College’s senior team to a historic win, claiming the TAS Blue Division Basketball Championship over archrivals John Paul College.

Fast forward 12 months and Ula was part of the Queensland South team that squeezed a thrilling one-point victory over South Australia Metro to win its first Basketball Australia National Championship.

The victory saw Ula and Queensland South team mates Meila Goodchild and Shyla Heal selected for the 23 athlete U17 Australian squad.

Ula is working on her game in the hope that her talents will take her overseas to play for a US college team and, ultimately, land her a place in the WNBA. For now though, the Year 10 student still has study to contend with, not to mention the challenges of mixing it with senior players closer to home.

“I play as a power forward so defending against the older players can be challenging,” she said.

“This QBL season, I played a few minutes for Logan Thunder which was good because I got to go up against some ex-WNBL players so that was definitely a good experience.”

Logan Together: Every Child, Every Opportunity A recently released report has detailed how some Logan kids are falling behind state averages in key areas such as reading, social development and health.

“We are setting out to do what has rarely, if ever, been done in Australia before. That is, in a single 10-year period, change the life trajectory of an entire generation of kids.”

In response to the State of Logan’s Children and Young People report, the community has swung into action, developing a plan to tackle the problem head-on.

Mr Cox said Logan Together would operate across governments and community groups using a model known as collective impact to achieve shared goals.

Comprising representatives from all three levels of government, non-government organisations, schools and various community groups, Logan Together was formed to bring Logan kids up to and beyond state averages within 10 years.

Logan Together director Matthew Cox said while the report highlighted issues that needed action, it was also important to note that many Logan parents were doing a fantastic job.

“Logan is a wonderful, dynamic, diverse community and a great place to grow up,” he said.

“

“But we need to be upfront about the challenges that some children and families are facing.

“Around 40,000 children in Logan are under eight years of age.

Most of them are doing fine, but about 30 per cent of them will need extra focus and support to reach their potential.

“If we don’t do something for this generation of young children, the evidence is crystal clear: they are much more likely to grow to be disengaged teenagers and then troubled adults.

“If we work across boundaries, measure what counts and do what we know works for children, the experience from abroad is that you get, over time, real community uplift,” he said.

“Importantly, we have to take a universal approach. This is about every child the whole way from birth through to age eight.”

Logan Together arose as a response to the community aspirations identified in the Logan City of Choice Summit and is a key action of the Logan: City of Choice Two-Year Action Plan 2013-2015.

It has taken two years to design the initiative and to bring more than 40 partners and every level of Government on board.

Logan Together is hosted by Griffith University Logan Campus, and receives funding and in-kind support from the Australian Government, Queensland Government, Logan City Council and a host of non-government agencies and philanthropic supporters.

Senior Ambassador a ‘Noble’ character Max Noble is a humble man who has spent more than 15 years serving the community as president of the Brigalow Country Community Club.

Along with the many other talented club members, Max does much more than put on a show – he goes out of his way to help others without a second thought.

Max was recently recognised for his many selfless acts having been named Logan’s Senior Ambassador for 2015 during Seniors Week celebrations in the City of Logan.

He and other club members perform regularly at nursing homes and schools, arrange days out for seniors and even provide those doing it tough with furniture when they can.

Mayor Pam Parker said Max was a fantastic senior ambassador, demonstrating an active and positive lifestyle that was admired by his peers and the entire community.

“Max is not only a great performer — he is a genuinely compassionate person — who goes out of his way to help those less fortunate and make life easier for others,” she said.

“The Brigalow Country Community Club is a wonderful asset for our city.

“Under Max’s leadership, it makes a real difference in people’s lives and helps them to connect and feel part of a greater community.”

Young artists on board Artwaves exhibition Logan Art Gallery will showcase the emerging creative talents of local high school students when the Artwaves exhibition opens later this month.

More than 150 students from 30 secondary schools in the City of Logan and neighbouring areas will display artworks covering a variety of media and techniques.

Now in its 23rd year, Artwaves has a strong tradition of featuring artworks from young people inspired by social issues, identity, the environment, global issues, spirituality, religion and, most importantly, their own personal journeys.

Works appearing in the exhibition have been jointly selected by visual art teachers and gallery staff.

For students considering a career in art, the gallery will offer one Artwaves student a mentorship opportunity to develop their own exhibition at Logan Art Gallery.

Artwaves will be held at Logan Art Gallery, corner of Wembley Rd and Jacaranda Ave, Logan Central, from Friday 18 September until Saturday 24 October.

The gallery is open 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

Bellevue Park facilities put through their paces When students from Boronia Heights State School’s AFL School of Excellence found themselves washed out of a training session with the Gold Coast Suns, they decided to think outside the square.

Teachers from the school had heard of fitness equipment installed at Bellevue Park and decided the new fitness stations would make for a great replacement.

We’re told the students had a great day training on the weight equipment, using the sprint track and the wide oval space for kicking drills.

They finished the day with an all-in game, and while disappointed at missing out on training with the Suns, still managed a bright day.

Legendary Kung Fu Master visits Logan A kung fu master who once trained Bruce Lee visited Logan last month to help open the city’s newest dojo.

Grandmaster William Cheung officially opened Kung Fu Southside, a chapter of the Global Traditional Wing Chun Association, in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.

He is credited with introducing Bruce Lee to Wing Chun Kung Fu, with a range of other Hollywood celebrities also calling on Grandmaster Cheung.

Kung Fu Southside is located on Central Crt, Hillcrest, and offers free community workshops.

New public facilities for Middle Park A new public toilet has been built for the comfort and use of park visitors at Middle Park.

“There’s been a real need in the area for additional public toilet facilities,” he said.

“It also means schools can use the park and runners using the walkways now have a new location while out and about.

“I’m delighted we’ve been able to make this happen – it’s a great result for the community.”

The toilet block features two unisex toilets, disability access, a baby change table and was built within a budget of $100,000.

Councillor Laurie Smith said the facilities would help families who use the park, and enable parties and private bookings to be made.

Seniors group comes of age in 2015 The Browns Plains branch of National Seniors has come of age this year, celebrating 21 years of fun and friendship in the local area.

President Ron Lord said about 80 people were part of the group, which is open to people aged 50 years and more.

“We find most of our members come along because it gets them out of the house and they can have lots of fun,” he said.

“Many older people become isolated as they get older, which is sad, but we can help build friendships.”

The Browns Plains branch meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Greenbank RSL and also takes monthly bus trips to explore the region.

Members also enjoy extended trips of up to five days every year, visiting Yeppoon, the ‘outback’ and Grafton in recent years.

“We have also supported many charities over the years,” Ron said.

“The Browns Plains branch is very friendly and I love spending time with their members.”

“While the branch provides a social outlet locally, the national body advocates for older Australians with all levels of government, so it is beneficial to be involved,” she said.

Roads made safer for residents C

ouncil has recently completed roadworks in Division 8 to reduce speeding in local streets.

Councillor Cherie Dalley said several roundabouts on Lamberth Rd had been changed following concerns raised by residents.

“This is likely to deter drivers from making noise and leaving tyre marks as well.”

The intersections at Bushland Dr/Leis Way, Benjamina Cct and Stringybark St/ Resi Dr were modified.

Meanwhile, three speed platforms have been installed at Ammons St to slow down and discourage people rat running between Dowling St and Waller Rd. Cr Dalley said local residents had responded positively to the modifications.

Times a changin’ in Village Green

A

major project to expand community facilities at Logan Village Green is about to begin, with work expected to start on the much-needed extra space in the coming months.

An expanded museum with space to hold more exhibitions, additions to the craft centre, a new coffee shop and playground are all on the cards for the beloved town green.

Logan Village Community Centre president Allan Pettigrew said the project would create a great community centre to stop and take in the history and ambience of the historic area.

“We’ve been working with Council and the State Government to make sure our plans meet building codes and the heritage sensitivities of the site,” he said.

“Work on additional heritage and history display space is due to start in the next month or so, after much planning and development.

“We’re very excited, and hope that the new facilities will become a new tourist attraction for the city.”

Councillor Phil Pidgeon has committed Division 9 infrastructure funding to the project, with final costings determined by the final project design.

See double along Chambers Flat Road The $18 million project has been brought forward to save ratepayer money and to ensure the project is completed over 18 months rather than several years.

Councillor Phil Pidgeon said the project would cater for growing demand now and into the future by creating significant extra capacity.

“Park Ridge and the surrounding suburbs will be growing over the coming years, so it makes sense to get the work done now ahead of when it’s desperately needed,” he said.

“This is the biggest road construction project Council has undertaken to date, and will create a dual carriageway from Park Ridge Rd to Entrance St, as well as new signalised intersections at Bumstead Rd and Park Ridge Rd along with a range of other safety enhancements.

“I’m very excited about construction starting, but would also urge road users and residents to be patient while construction is underway, as delays can be expected.”

The guardians of Scrubby Creek

Batty Halloween

Scrubby Creek is a special place in the City of Logan and well known for its wildlife. It was the inspiration for the children’s book Wajin: The Guardian of Scrubby Creek, by Beverly and Reginald (Uncle Reg) Knox. This special display of larger than life animal puppets is their daughter Missy Knox’s tribute to their work and the animals that feature in the book.

Saturday 31 October, 5pm to 6.30pm, Beenleigh Get batty this Halloween! Find out things you never knew about bats and enjoy the splendour of a bat fly out! There will be free kids activities and a free BBQ. Children should wear their best batty outfit for the best-dressed bat competition.

The guardians of Scrubby Creek puppet displays will be displayed at Logan West Library from Thursday 1 October to Friday 30 October. A story time event with Missy Knox will be held at Logan West Library at 10am on Friday 9 October.

A campaign to promote respectful relationships and an anti-violence message to 12-24 year olds has been launched in the City of Logan.

What makes this campaign different to most is that it will be shaped and delivered by young people who live in the city.

Nine youth ambassadors were awarded scholarships to help create the #R4Respect strategy so that its key messages can reach its intended audience.

With support from Youth and Family Services, the group will look at using social media, online games and other innovative approaches to encourage young people to share the respect and anti-violence message and apply them in their own lives.

Over the coming months, people across the city might notice the #R4Respect tag line as the group shares positive messages about respectful relationships with schools, businesses and community groups.

The group is also looking for support from local businesses to help share its ideas with young people.

Logan City Council is working with other tiers of government, community leaders and organisations across the city on an action plan to address domestic and family violence.

Drink drive lesson no accident Local high school students have been given a first-hand look at the consequences of drink driving in a Queensland Police safe driving initiative.

Earlier this year, Loganlea High School students and teachers were the audience for a drink driving docudrama organised and presented by Logan Central police station.

Paramedics from the Queensland Ambulance Service, RACQ representatives and funeral service employees also took part in the dramatised scenario that saw three students made up to look like crash

victims in an accident involving a drunk driver.

Students from Loganlea High School who attended the accident simulation said the scenario had created the necessary ‘visual impact’ to show the consequences of drink driving.

Logan City Council has formed the SafeRoads4Logan partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Health and RACQ to promote road safety in the City of Logan.

Logan Beaudesert Crime Stoppers receives achievement award Commitment is king when it comes to protecting a community and the Logan Beaudesert Crime Stoppers Committee has its share of dedicated members.

At its 30 July 2015 meeting, the committee recognised a number of members who have achieved significant milestones this year, including Acting Inspector Mick Thiesfield for 10 years of service and immediate past Chairman Andrew Jones for five years.

They join a number of members who have served on the committee for many years, including Cherie Dalley (12 years), Lynne Clarke (12 years), Lee Bruhn (eight years) and Jennifer Fredericks (six years).

The excellent work of the Logan Beaudesert Crime Stoppers was also recognised this month with the 2015 Area Committee Achievement Award.

Supporting Crime Stoppers is a key initiative of the Logan: City of Choice Two-Year Action Plan 2013-2015.

Logan students shine in Creative GenerationsBangarra Dance Project Support from the Logan: City of Choice Leadership Team provided 25 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from five Logan high schools with the opportunity to participate in this year’s Creative GenerationsBangarra Dance Program.

The Leadership Team provided $2,200 to help fund rehearsals at the Logan Entertainment Centre, making the program more accessible to local students. Logan City Council also provided support through subsidised venue hire.

Students from Beenleigh State High School, Kingston College, Mabel Park State High School, Marsden State High School and Springwood State High School performed as part of the 50-stong South East Region entry at the Creative Generations Showcase at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre in July.

The Creative Generations-Bangarra Dance Program is an annual initiative for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander secondary school students.

This year, it involved three weeks

of workshops and rehearsals, culminating in a large scale, high profile performance featuring young dancers from throughout Queensland.

The annual program encourages cultural connection between students and elders from local areas in the south east region. Through this experience, the students grow in confidence in their own communities and help their schools to develop culturally appropriate and authentic relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The program is supported by Education Queensland.

During this year’s workshops and rehearsals, students participated in an intensive dance-based program for secondary students, exploring ‘who you are’ and ‘where you come from’. The participants researched and gathered stories with the help and guidance from elders to develop dance, performance and creative skills to produce dance theatre.

This year’s theme was ‘One Mob on Sacred Ground’, reflecting the diversity of Aboriginal culture in the south east region.

Brotherly adventures lead to awards A Shailer Park family has shared two of Scouting’s highest awards.

Iain Riek, 26, recently earned the Baden-Powell Scout Award, the highest award available to Rovers, or those involved in Scouting aged 18 or over.

At the same time, Iain’s 18-year-old brother, Christopher, received the Queen’s Scout Award, the highest award that can be given to Venturer Scouts, usually aged between 15 and 18.

The awards required the brothers to commit hundreds of hours to completing a variety of tasks and activities, including overseas treks and community development projects.

Iain is the first Scout in the City of Logan to receive the Baden-Powell Scout Award in 20 years.

Councillor Darren Power congratulated the brothers on their achievements.

“Iain, Christopher and their family have been involved with the Shailer Park Scout Den at Anakie Park for years,” he said.

“They have shown tremendous dedication to earn these awards and are an inspiration to young people involved in Scouting in the City of Logan.”

Australian team in good hands Mille Loftus knew her grandmother had played for the Danish handball team but didn’t know much else about the sport.

Alexis and Heather were John Paul College students preparing to tour Spain and Italy with the Under 21 Australian Women’s Handball Team.

In 2012, she found a local connection to the popular European game in a newspaper article about Alexis Gardner and Heather Cooper.

Three years on, Mille is a member of the Australian team alongside Alexis, Heather and Natasha Lunniss.

The awesome foursome recently played New Zealand in front of a home crowd at the Logan Metro Sports Centre during the Australian Junior Nationals.

“It’s a wonderful achievement to have four players from Shailer Park and Daisy Hill on the national team.”

New footpath makes Pub Lane safer for pedestrians

Pedestrian safety at Greenbank has been boosted, with construction wrapping up on a new footpath near the interstate rail line along Pub Lane.

Councillor Trevina Schwarz said the $700,000 project was being delivered by the developers behind Teviot Downs Estate, who would receive an offset against future infrastructure charges as a result. Teviot Downs Estate and other landowners also dedicated land to accommodate the required road width.

“Council officers and representatives from Teviot Downs Estate have considered pedestrian safety to be a priority for a long time and I’m so pleased we were able to reach an agreement that makes the area better for all residents,” she said.

The new playground at New Beith’s Richard Wilson Park has been officially opened to the community.

Councillor Trevina Schwarz said the pod-style treehouse playground – featuring a rope bridge, climbing net and fireman’s pole – along with a smaller play structure and swing set had been popular with local residents.

“There are more than 1,000 families living in the estate, which means many people were at risk of serious injury or even death if they wanted to walk to the shopping centre,” Cr Schwarz said.

“This footpath will make such a difference for our community.”

“We also installed a new picnic shelter, rubbish bin and two seats, so it’s a place the whole family can enjoy together,” she said.

The park is named after Richard Wilson, who was the original settler of the Wilson family in the Logan region.

The family emigrated from Scotland and settled in the New Beith region in the late 1870s.

Get set to celebrate the opening of Beenleigh Town Square Construction is nearly complete at Beenleigh Town Square.

Councillor Jennie Breene said a popup event to be held this month in the new town square was an opportunity for Council to thank the community for its patience while the $9.75 million project was being built over the past 12 months.

“The notorious six-way roundabout has been removed and replaced with a signalised intersection and civic space that will become the community heart for many years to come,” she said.

“We know the works were inconvenient for some people, but we

always said the short-term pain would bring many benefits for the Beenleigh CBD. “I’m excited that we’ll have markets here from April next year and know we’ll be able to host many community events in the space in the future.”

The community is invited to celebrate the space at a family-friendly event on the evening of Friday 6 November.

Long-time Beenleigh resident Moya McKeon, with Councillor Jennie Breene, will use the new footpath on Saratoga St to get to the shops from her nearby home.

A new footpath will be built along Saratoga St to improve connectivity and safety in Beenleigh.

Councillor Jennie Breene said the footpath would link the intersection of Mt Warren Blvd and BeaudesertBeenleigh Rd. “Residents contacted me to say that the current conditions were 16

not suitable for people to get around easily,” Cr Breene said.

“This new footpath will be wide enough for mobility scooters to travel along, which will benefit many people.

“I’m really excited that we are able to improve safety for the community.”

Construction is expected to start next year, with $120,000 funded from Division 12 infrastructure funding.

Are you prepared for bushfire season?

Logan City Council is working closely with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) to inform residents about the dangers posed by bushfires, as well as providing logistical support during an emergency.

Mayor Pam Parker said Council had been briefed by the QFES that the next few months were expected to be warmer and dryer than usual – and with a higher than usual fuel load – bushfires may pose an increased threat to homes in Logan.

“If you live near bushland, one of your priorities should be to have a bushfire survival plan, which details what you intend to do when a fire threatens your home,” she said.

Corey Bock, Acting Regional Manager for QFES, said when fire threatened, it was important for residents to get their priorities right to ensure their own safety and family members’ safety came first.

“Catastrophic fires in other states have taught us that bushfires can become a situation of ‘every person for themselves’ and those people who have survived have either done everything right or been extremely lucky,” he said.

“Some areas in Logan are surrounded by bushland and there may be only one or two access roads to an estate, requiring special consideration to avoid being trapped.

Danger Rating Index, which is set by the Bureau of Meteorology and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service on a six point scale, ranging from low-moderate to catastrophic.

“Bushfires burn much faster uphill than downhill so this should also be a consideration when working out when is the best time to leave.

The QFES, for example, recommends that on days rated catastrophic or extreme fire danger, you should leave the area well in advance with portable valuables, documents and pets if there is a fire in the area. Leaving the night before or early in the morning is recommended as a precaution.

“By planning in advance you will have better knowledge of what to consider, the preparations you will need to make and how to safeguard your family and property if a bushfire threatens.

“You need to do these things for yourself because during a large-scale event, the QFES will have limited resources and may be deployed over a large area covering thousands of hectares,” Corey said.

Fundraising for a very worthy cause

Support for local clubs a stretch

Yoga classes will be held in Underwood Park this month to help raise money for a local club.

Participants keen to end the working week on a natural high will be asked to donate $5, with the proceeds from each class going to the Underwood Park Netball Association.

Friends Denise Cleary, Jeanette McMullen and Judy Ludwig have all survived cancer and next month they will be raising money to help others beat the disease too.

For the past nine years, the trio have helped run an annual fundraising event for the Cancer Council along with the other members of their group, Kira Ludwig, Kylie Cleary, Leslie Anderson, Chris Lemin, Jenny Sek, Joanne Sek and Ivy Douglas.

The cancer fundraiser will be held from noon to 5pm on Saturday 10 October.

Underwood Road upgrade a priority Design work has begun for an upgrade of the busy section of Underwood Rd that connects to Somerset St and the eastern entry/exit of Rochedale Shopping Village.

The upgrade will see new traffic lights installed (replacing the existing pedestrian push button lights) to improve traffic management at the intersection and the entry/exit of Rochedale Shopping Village.

The final design for the intersection will comply with all relevant traffic and safety standards.

“The classes will be held for free, but all money raised from donations at each class will be collected by the netball association,� she said.

Yoga classes in Underwood Park will be held on Friday 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th October.

Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat and a water bottle and to arrive at 5.45am for a 6am start.

The Underwood Road Traffic Management Plan was first conceived in 2011 to address safety issues for pedestrian and vehicle traffic on Underwood Rd, Rochedale South.

Earlier this year, the first stage of the plan was completed, including the installation of new speed platforms on the road and reduction in the speed limit.

Traffic studies conducted by Council before and after the improvement works indicated that the average traffic speed has been significantly reduced along that section of Underwood Rd.

Woodridge State High School wins multicultural award I would like to congratulate the students at Woodridge State High School and University of Queensland who took out the Communication and Media Award at the recent Queensland Multicultural Awards.

The project began in 2014 when Woodridge State High School launched the Change Makers Project which aimed to build greater connections and cross-cultural understanding among Indigenous and Pacific Islander communities, newlyarrived refugees and people from the wider community in Logan.

The bikes and helmets were provided free of charge to students aged 14 to 17, who learnt how to assemble and maintain their bicycles before being taught how to ride safely.

The hybrid bikes are a combination of mountain bike and road bike and are ideally suited to ride on Logan’s bikeways and trails.

Councillor Russell Lutton, who is also chair of the Logan Bicycle Advisory Committee, said the community-based initiative encouraged young people to become more active and learn how to ride safely.

“It’s great to see the joy this initiative brings to young people, many of who have never ridden a bicycle before,” he said.

“Participants learn how to maintain their bicycles, ride safely, and of course have fun during the process.

“Last year, 200 bicycles were given away at this event at Logan Metro and I frequently see them being ridden around. It’s a great way to get to school, get to a part time job or enjoy our many bikeways.

The project had an overwhelmingly positive response and generated further media coverage in Australia and overseas.

“With two thirds of Australians not getting enough exercise, the bikes provide the opportunity for physical activity along with a sense of independence.”

Logan is the only Queensland council to participate in the initiative, which is sponsored by Coca-Cola, in partnership with Bicycle Network, and is now one of the largest events of its kind held in Australia.

Woodridge and Mabel Park State High School Students were among the 800 students who received new hybrid bicycles following one of the biggest Happiness Cycle events in Australia.

Woodridge State High School partnered with the University of Queensland’s School of Communication and Arts, which provided technical expertise in layout and design of a magazine promoting cross cultural understanding. UQ students were also involved in the interviewing and editing of student-inspired stories, profiles and creative work. Five thousand copies of the magazine were distributed to the local community and across the country.

The school has launched Future Logan Leaders, which aims to inspire talented young students and will be delivered in conjunction with four local primary schools.

When the program commences in 2016, it will aim to build the capacity of our young aspiring leaders over two years with students in Years 5 and 6 at Mabel Park, Harris Fields, Slacks Creek and Woodridge North state schools set to benefit. The program will also work with students in Years 8 to 9 and 11 to 12 to provide ongoing development opportunities.

Police go bush to boost community safety Funded by the Divisions 7 and 8 Infrastructure and Capital Improvement Programs, the ATV has already made its first arrest.

Councillor Cherie Dalley (Division 8) said the Viking would help police conduct community patrols and reach out-of-the-way locations.

“Getting into parks and many of the green areas around Browns Plains can be quite difficult,” she said.

“The new patrol vehicle will give police the ability to reach into places they might not have before, and provide significantly more mobility around the region.”

The project was jointly funded by Councillor Laurie Smith and Councillor Dalley in partnership with Browns Plains Police as a community safety initiative.

Mobile camera van supports community safety

SMOKE-FREE BEENLEIGH Did you know Beenleigh Town Square will be the City of Logan’s first dedicated smoke free public mall?

Logan’s award-winning safety camera program has been boosted by a $50,000 upgrade to the mobile safety camera van.

The camera program is just one part of Council’s proactive community programs ensuring a holistic approach to community safety.

The cameras are used as a costeffective way of ensuring public safety in high-use areas, noting Council’s work to activate spaces as it encourages a safer, more vibrant community.

They also help with rapid responses to suspected criminal activities and target anti-social behaviour, graffiti offences and vandalism.

The van was used at the recent Queensland Music Festival event at Logan Central and can be used with police operations.

Footage from the van integrates with the recently-opened $1.3 million monitoring room and can process vision 24 hours a day, seven days a week over the 4G network when the van is deployed.

Council is proud to provide this service which is creating a safer community.

Upgrades to the mobile safety camera van: • four fixed digital cameras • one pan/tilt/zoom camera (on a telescopic mount allowing 360-degree views up to a height of six metres — giving long-range coverage) • wider resolution cameras • infrared vision for after-dark operation.

Parents and Citizens Association President Melanie Markey said the October 23 event would help raise money to provide better resources for the school.

“We’re hoping to raise enough money for more iPads and a better WIFI network across the whole school,” she said.

“There’s always more to do, so any extra funds raised will be used for other projects.

“This year’s fete will feature a night market, rides, a food section and will end with a fireworks spectacular.

“The event has grown steadily for the past few years, and we’re really excited about holding the night markets again this year.”

Windaroo State School’s 2015 fete will be held at 300 Mt Warren Blvd, from 5.30pm to 8.30pm on Friday 23 October.

Step out in style on new footpaths Work on new footpaths for Wilhelm Dr at Windaroo will begin shortly following approval of new capital works in Division Four.

“This project will take pathways from 27 Wilhelm Dr to Johanna Pl, and complete a missing link in the footpath network,” he said.

“I’m very pleased we have been able to get this project happening for the local community.

“I would like to thank residents in advance for their patience while works are being undertaken. It can be inconvenient, and Council will work with our contractors to minimise any disruptions – and I’m sure the result will be worthwhile.”

Council will also remove some Cocos Palms from the area as part of the project.

Spruce up for Berrinba Wetlands The ever popular Berrinba Wetlands will get a makeover in time for summer.

Councillor Graham Able said the park’s revamp would provide refurbished garden areas, adding to the appeal for visitors.

“The Berrinba Wetlands are a natural treasure attracting thousands of locals and visitors from South-East Queensland who come to enjoy the

wildlife and extensive walking tracks,” he said.

“It will be great to give the gardens around the play and picnic facilities a spruce up as these facilities are put to good use every day.

“With a running festival coming up and many locals attending parkrun every weekend, we want to make sure the wetlands are kept at a high standard.”

Footpath to make Fifth meet Leatrice The works are aimed at improving pedestrian and motorist safety at the corner or Fifth Ave and Leatrice St and will include road widening, kerb and channel and a new section of footpath.

Councillor Graham Able said the new section is one of the only remaining areas in Division 5 without kerb and channel.

“This work will be a great improvement for the local community and will make the area much safer as residents will not need to cross the road near a bend to stay on the footpath,” he said.

A small section of footpath is set to make a big improvement in the lives of locals in Marsden.

Plans for natural playground Murray’s Environmental Reserve is a 9.1 hectare nature reserve in Slacks Creek with significant ecological value.

With a cleared area already existing near Murrays Rd, a new nature playground is proposed with balance logs, rope bridges, timber stepping blocks, a playhouse, hammock swing, swing and climbing logs as well as two picnic shelters.

The project will be jointly funded by Councillors Luke Smith and Steve Swenson as the reserve encompasses both of their divisional areas.

Councillor Luke Smith said he had worked with Councillor Steve Swenson on advancing a concept design for the proposed playground that residents were invited to provide feedback on.

Councillor Luke Smith said the recent installation of a right turn arrow from Drews Rd into Wardilla St was the final piece of work to be completed to improve pedestrian and motorist safety on the stretch of road.

“The signalised crossing was the priority for pedestrians and now the

green turn arrow will assist motorists accessing Loganholme State School,” he said.

“In total, these works have cost more than $230,000, however, every dollar has been well spent to ensure the safety of our community.

“I am very proud of what has been achieved by working in consultation with the school, P&C and other community members to deliver these vital improvements.”

Final piece in Drews Road puzzle complete

Tracy Kenyon holds a signed photo of Hollywood actor Victor Jory that she found at the Logan Recycling Market.

Tracy Kenyon’s favourite film is the classic Gone with the Wind but she didn’t need to travel to Hollywood to claim her own part of cinema history.

During a quick trawl of the Logan Recycling Market one Saturday morning, Tracy found an autographed black and white picture of actor Victor Jory, who played the role of Jonas Wilkerson in Gone with the Wind.

Tracy also discovered signed pictures of actresses Sally Eilers and Mae Clarke, who played Dr Frankenstein’s bride

in Frankenstein, one of the first Hollywood films to feature sound.

The signed photographs were in a collection of things she picked up for about $20, although a quick search on online auction sites revealed the pieces of Hollywood memorabilia she had stumbled upon were worth 10 times more.

Tracy, a diversional therapist in aged care, said she looked for items that might rekindle some nostalgia in her elderly clients.

City of Logan Relay For Life The City of Logan’s second Relay for Life event will be held at Hills College in Jimboomba from 3pm on 10 October to 9am on 11 October.

Relay For Life is a unique event where the community comes together in an amazing show of strength,

camaraderie and goodwill to create hope for a cancer free future.

At Relay For Life, teams of up to 15 people keep a baton moving for 18 hours in a relay style walk or run overnight, all in an effort to support the one in two Queenslanders affected by cancer in their lifetime.

Entry is $15 for youths and $20 for adults, which includes a polo shirt and breakfast at the event.

All funds raised through Relay For Life are invested into Cancer Council Queensland’s vital cancer research, education programs and patient support services.
