July 18 - 24, 2011 LOGAN’S SENIOR ADMINISTRATORS TO SERVE “LUNCH ON US,” JULY 27 There is such a thing as a free lunch…at least, once a year on the Logan campus. The Fifth Annual “Lunch on Us” event will be held on Tuesday, July 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Logan cafeteria. All faculty, staff and students are invited to enjoy a free lunch on the college. The menu includes: char-grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken breasts and veggie burgers, mostaccioli, Italian salad, Ted Drewes® frozen custard, iced tea, canned soda and bottled water. FIELD DAY IS WEDNESDAY, JULY 20 Logan students will display their athletic prowess at the twice-annual Field Day event to be held Wednesday, July 20 on the campus. Team events for this year include: Six-Bases Kickball, Blind Sand Volleyball, SoccerTennis and Tug-of-War. Activities for individual participants include: Hilly-Billy Golf, Washers, Bean-Bag Toss, and a Basketball Hot Shots competition. Logan’s Danielle Spath, DC, MS, CCSP, assistant director of sports and rehabilitation, will present a lecture on "Concussion Management" and the importance of chiropractic. Everyone is welcome.

The Dean’s List Certification Lunch was held July 14 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Purser Center lobby. Three Consecutive Term honorees included: Philip J. Berardi, Jonathan C. Bergen, Glenn M. Valerie McLendon, director of the Logan Alumni Association, has taken a position as an account executive with Concentra, an urgent care/workers comp facility. Her last day of work in the alumni office is July 22.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital is sponsoring a kickball tournament and needs umpires. Here are the details: August 13 in Shaw Park, Clayton First game is at 10 a.m., last official game is at 3 p.m. with playoffs following During the day, there are 8 games played at one time out of a field of 40 teams Each game lasts 30 minutes A total of 8 umpires are needed per shift Shifts are: 10-1; 1-4 (4 umps will be asked to stay another hour or two for playoffs) Umpires need to attend a brief training session either the day of or maybe some evening Umps will be given a t-shirt, lunch and plenty of water (refreshments will follow) For more information, contact Matthew Viejo, a Tri 9 Logan student and a coordinator at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, or Logan Student Services office.

APPLIED KINESIOLOGY CLUB MEETS TUESDAY, JULY 19 The Applied Kinesiology Club will meet Tuesday, June 28 at 11:05 a.m. in room G40. Dr. Katharine Conable, associate professor in the Chiropractic Science division, will teach the Tuesday meetings of the A.K. club, beginning with the most basic basics of A.K. Through the trimester, videos of Dr. Goodheart telling his stories of the early discoveries in AK and patient management clinical pearls will be shown. Tuesday’s meeting affords an opportunity to practice these and more advanced AK skills with the help of club officers and experienced club members. All trimester students are welcome to these hands-on workshops. No previous experience required. Learn to evaluate muscle function with scientific precision and to use muscle responses as functional neurological feedback. Gain certainty on your ability to correct postural deviations and to identify subluxations. Learn simple manual methods of optimizing muscle function to prevent injury and help adjustments hold.

LOGAN HEALTH CENTERS IN THE COMMUNITY July 21: Logan interns will offer complimentary postural, body fat analysis and blood pressure screenings for employees of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center.

July 23: Logan interns will participate in the third of a series of three events with the St. Louis Cardinals’ Cardinals Care Redbird Rookies. Interns will offer complimentary postural screenings and offer information on the Straighten Up, America program, backpack safety and showcase a spine and other bones in the body.

July 23: Logan interns will provide complimentary postural, body fat analysis and blood pressure screenings for members of the community at the Myrtle Hilliard Davis Comprehensive Health Centers Inc. Annual Family Health and Wellness Fair.

SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDIES Danielle Spath, DC, MS, CCSP, assistant director of sports and rehabilitation, and Melissa Engelson, DC, a resident in the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Rehabilitation Center, are recruiting subjects for a research project entitled, “Effects of Lumbar ROM Exercise on Multifidus Cross Sectional Area of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Low Backs.” Participants will take part in a six-week trial of Lumbar ROM exercise. Expected duration of the exams will be approximately one hour (initially) and 10 minutes (follow up). Participants with or without low back pain between the ages of 18-55 not currently receiving treatment may qualify for this study.

Diagnostic imaging fellow, Eve E. Bonic, DC, DACBR, is recruiting subjects for a second research project entitled, “Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Anterior Talofibular Ligament: Thickness of Injured Ligaments.”

Subjects between the ages of 18-45 who have had ankle pain or an ankle sprain within the past year and who do not have a history of ankle fracture, ankle surgery or diabetes mellitus qualify for this study. NEXT CHESTERFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MUSICAL CONCERT IS JULY 19 A FREE summer tradition continues this June as the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce once again presents its concert series in Faust County Park on Tuesday evenings. Every Tuesday night, Faust Park comes alive with concert goers, food, dancing and of course, the sounds of the best toe-tapping live music around! The June 28 concert series will feature the FanFare. All concerts and parking are free of charge. The park opens at 5:15 p.m. with pre-concert entertainment for children provided by the city of Chesterfield Parks Department and art projects courtesy of Chesterfield Arts. Affordable concessions are available. Concert goers can purchase soda, beer, wine, water, brats, hot dogs, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, popcorn, candy, snacks, Sheridan’s frozen custard and more at the Chamber’s concession stand. Seating is comfortable and informal so bring blankets and lawn chairs and put on your dancing shoes. POPULATION SHIFTS IDENTIFIED IN ST. LOUIS COUNTY The St. Louis Beacon recently reported that four of St. Louis County's seven council districts have lost population during the past 10 years, which will force changes in all the boundary lines in the next few months.

The four are the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th districts. The largest percentage loss -- 7.7 percent -- took place in the 1st council district, which takes in the near north St. Louis County suburban communities of Jennings and Wellston, among others. Next comes the neighboring 2nd District (loss: 4.3 percent), which takes in such northwest St. Louis County communities as Maryland Heights, St. Ann and Overland. The 4th District -- which includes Black Jack and part of Florissant -- lost 3.6 percent. The 5th, which extends from University City south and west through Shrewsbury and Webster Groves, lost 1.9 percent.

Not surprisingly, the biggest gain over the last decade -- 3.8 percent -- was in the county's 7th District, which takes in far west St. Louis County and the communities of Wildwood and Chesterfield. The 3rd District, which takes in central-west communities such as Creve Coeur and Kirkwood, grew 1.4 percent. The remaining 6th District, in far south St. Louis County, remained stable, growing just .3 percent.
