MAKING ART HAPPEN

Providing artists with opportunities to push their practice and create ambitious new work is at the core of what we do. We produce, present, and nurture the creation of experimental new art and the exchange of ideas through commissioned exhibitions and public programs on contemporary art and curatorial practice. We are distinct in supporting artists in creating large-scale installations and providing them with curatorial guidance, artist fees, production budgets and two to ten week residencies. We foster connections to Miami’s arts community and the public through free public programs and free admission. Locust Projects has presented more than 170 commissioned projects by over 400 local, national and international artists.

“Aptly titled “Antenna,” the exhibition bucks the tradition of keeping transmitters far from view and in enclosed spaces by taking the communication tool to the audience.” — Carolina del Busto, Miami New Times 6

MIAMI ART WEEK Book Signing with Trenton Doyle Hancock, Meet the Artist Reception and Private Supper by Sparky’s BBQ

“That evolving narrative plays out in color-filled sculptures and performances seemingly torn from graphic novels where good eternally battles the evils of authoritarianism, racism and inequity. At Locust Projects, his exhibition, “I Made a Mound City in Miami Dade County,” spills onto floors and walls as it explores the infant characters and epic story of the Moundverse.” — Jane Wooldridge, Miami Herald

He is showcasing handmade and small press comics on topics such as action-adventure, autobiography, politics, drama, folklore, fantasy, horror, humor, parenting, poetry, technology, sex and sports. Brideau, in turn, invited regional self-publishers of zines and comics to consign works.” — George Fishman, Miami Herald

Jeff Thompson: Human Computers On view February 22 - March 14, 2020 The exhibition kicked off with a performance that was a profoundly slow, intricate inhabitation of a single computer .png file. Over the course of six hours, a group of thirteen performers decoded a single digital image entirely by hand using only pencils, paint and paper worksheets. Click the image below to watch a recap.

18

“Long ago, before humans assigned every annoying task to machines, we did everything by hand — even computer calculations. Artist Jeff Thompson wants to remind us of that past with his new performance art piece, Human Computers.” — Miami New Times

Marielle Plaisir: ACTA EST FABULA (The piece is over) On view February 22 March 14, 2020 “Plaisir’s exhibition message to us, through her use of Dandridge’s on-screen exotic sexuality was as powerful 80 years ago as it is today, the representation of sexy, smart, strong, talented African American women trying to rise.” — Angela Shlyakhov, MiamiArtZine

The exhibition’s closing program consisted of an online screening of two short films by Maya Deren, Meshes of the Afternoon and At Land, followed by a conversation led by the artist and (F)empower, an organization of queer culture shifters creating a radical feminist awakening in Miami. The underwater shots looking toward the surface places the viewer in an ambiguous point of view — it could be the moment before sinking and expiring or before breaking the surface and surviving.” — Estefania Garcia, Miami New Times

“Romero said the intent is to use sound as a vessel and look at the messages carried through it: identity, culture, belonging, pride. For those who have a relationship with the sound, he said, he hopes it evokes feelings and memories of the island. For those who are new to it, he expects to introduce them to what for others is a common soundscape.” — Jesenia De Moya Correa, The Philadelphia Inquirer

ARTIST RESOURCES

46

Locust Projects supports Miami-based artists with a number of resources helping to support and sustain their creative careers including incubator grants and professional development opportunities. LEGALARTLINK - Artists of all disciplines can empower and expand their careers with support from LegalARTLink’s pro bono legal services and professional development resources including online webinars.

WAVEMAKER GRANTS - Through WaveMaker incubator grants more than $390,000 in funds have been awarded to 77 projects

over the last five years supporting new, publicly accessible projects in non-traditional spaces across Miami-Dade. As a national regranting program of the Warhol Foundation, WaveMaker grants have provided seed funding for several of Miami’s artist-run initiatives and projects.

WAVEMAKER INCUBATOR GRANTS

WaveMaker at Locust Projects supports Miami’s visionary artists with incubator grants for innovative, publicly accessible projects. Since 2015, WaveMaker Grants have awarded $399,000 in funding to 77 of Miami’s most visionary artists, curators, and collectives. Grantees receive up to $6,000 each in three categories: Research & Development + Implementation, New Work/Projects, and Long-Haul Projects. In the spirit of Locust Projects’ artist-centric mission to support experimentation, WaveMakers take risks outside of art institutions and markets, creating innovative work that is accessible to the public via process, presentation, production, or publication.

On October 2019, we celebrated the Cycle 6 WaveMaker grants awardees with a fun party at SOHO Beach house organized by Program Coordinator Monica Pena and past recipient Antonia Wright and DJ’d by awardee Alan Gutierrez. On May 2020, we celebrated the Cycle 7 WaveMaker grants awardees with a virtual happy hour via ZOOM, where grantees got to meet each other and speak about their projects.

LEGALARTLINK

Since it was founded as LegalArt in 2003, LegalARTLink has been a vital resource in supporting the artists to protect their work and empower their careers. A Miami-based legal aid and education program, LegalARTLink serves artists and arts organizations throughout the state of Florida. Artists receive access to legal advice and information, referrals to pro-bono attorneys, and one-on-one legal counseling and professional development workshops on a broad range of legal issues including estate planning, family law, immigration, contracts, business law, real estate, taxes, copyright, trademark, and more.

55

COVID-19 EMERGENCY RESPONSE

56

Working harder than ever to advocate for artists through the coronavirus crisis, Locust Projects helped support artists navigating difficult times by providing access to resources and opportunities, including: awarding $60,000 in Emergency Artist Relief Grants made possible by the Andy Warhol Foundation; LegalARTLink access to pro bono legal services and referrals; and awarding twelve Miami-based artists WaveMaker incubator grants; and sustaining funding to artists commissioned to create ambitious new work. Knowing all too well that artists operate in precarious financial conditions in the best of times, COVID found 62% of artists fully unemployed, with 95% reporting significant income loss. In response to the needs expressed by our community, Locust Projects waived the administrative fee for Miami artists to access LegalARTLink pro bono services, which served four times its usual amount of cases during the pandemic. In addition to moving programs online, a new blog, CLOSER LOOK, features the artists, people, and stories behind Miami’s longestrunning alternative art space, and provides artists vital income in return for their collaboration and contributions. Locust Projects’ YouTube channel shares behind-the-scenes content about current exhibitions and recordings of each webinar and online public program, ensuring access to our resources from the safety of home. A regularly-updated website page features local and national resources for COVID-19 relief and action and advocacy for equity and justice. Locust Projects remains as dedicated as ever to living our 21-year mission to create opportunities for visual artists and advocate for their careers, and sustaining that mission grows ever more important as artists continue to be impacted by the ongoing crisis. We reopened to the public by appointment in July with shows that had been postponed from April...Finally, this summer our teen LAB art intensive was reimagined virtually and resulted in an 80-foot long public art installation along North Miami Ave. This was made possible through support from individual donors through the Still Making Art Happen Campaign launched due to the cancellation of Spring Fling and a Benefit Art Sale of limited editions by Locust Projects Board Members, Adler Guerrier and Antonia Wright. Pandemic related grants include: National Endowment for the Arts CARES Grant, the Small Business Administration Paycheck Protection Protection Program, Miami-Dade Nonprofit Support Grant Program in partnership with the Miami Foundation, Florida CARES, The Miami Foundation Community Recovery Fund [via Funding Arts Network] (for LegalArtLink), The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation (for LegalArtLink) and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Regional Regranting (for Miami Artist Relief Grants).

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts’ Regional Regranting Program joined forces with its 16 regranting partners across the country, like Locust Projects, to distribute emergency grants to artists affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through a reallocation of our 2021 WaveMaker Grants. With this support, Locust Projects created and administered a fund to provide significant grants to Miami artists in need of emergency relief. The grants supported recouping financial losses and general support for artists who have been laid-off.

ACTIVATING CONVERSATIONS ON NEW ART AND IDEAS

Originally founded as Locust Talks by Locust Projects in 2013, Talks launched in 2018 in partnership between Locust Projects and Oolite Arts to connect their audiences and provide even more artist-centered programming. The Talks series brings 6 arts leaders to Miami to talk about their curatorial vision and practice, the art and artists that have shaped their careers, and how they support the work of artists whether in museums or non-traditional spaces. Each also visits the studios of local arists, providing feedback and visibility that can build a bridge between artists working in Miami and the international cultural community.

FUNDRAISERS AND FRIENDRAISERS Locust Projects relies on funding from annual fundraisers such as Spring Fling, Smash and Grab and the new Annual Benefit dinners as well as from support from members and individual donors. SMASH & GRAB - Since 2002, this lively event revolves around a raffle, for which local, national and international artists have

donated artwork—guaranteeing all ticket holders win an artwork. Tickets are drawn at random, with the winner getting their choice of artwork (i.e, first called gets first pick, and so on). The result is a fun party that places artwork into local collections, build relationships that support artists, connect with Miami’s art community, and support Locust Projects.

SPRING FLING - a highlight of Miami’s vibrant art and culture calendar since 2002, the festive and fun event features

delicious bites and sips, music, silent art auction, artist editions, raffle, pop-ups, artist interventions and more!

BENEFIT DINNERS - The first dinner was held at the Standard Spa Miami Beach to celebrate Locust Projects 20th Anniversary

in 2018 and honored the artist founders and the current and founding Board Chairs, Debra and Scholl. The 2nd dinner recognized Craig Robins and Locust’s 10th year in the Miami Design District and celebrated the installation by artist Trenton Doyle Hancock with a catered dinner in the exhibition.

MEMBERSHIP & INDIVIDUAL GIVING - Locust Projects Members and Supporters are an engaged group of artistic supporters

and enthusiasts who champion the work of artists and help make art happen through their support. They enjoy special access to programs and events, discounts on limited editions, and exclusive access to exhibiting artists as well as annual recognition of their support onsite and online.

The Halloween Edition of Smash & Grab was held on October 26, 2019. Included fabulous food by Shake Shack, Harry’s Pizzeria and sweets by Azucar Ice Cream Company, craft beer by Concrete Beach Brewery, and creative cocktails by Bacardi.
