n this issue our medical focus is on AIDS in the workplace. The article discusses the stigma associated with this illness and the effect it has on South African society. (page 34) We take a look at Rio De Janeiro, this Francois Rossouw years host city of the Olympic games, as a holiday destination.

We also have a look at Botswana and Red Sands in the Northern Cape in our travel section. In “Pharmacist in the vinyards”, page 30, Dulaine Stander tells us her story and also gives us some helpful photography tips.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

N

ot too long ago, people wanted a job for life, however there has been a worldwide paradigm shift. Upskilling by investing your time and money to improve your knowledge, skills and capabilities is certainly necessary in today’s complex and ever-changing business environment in order to remain competitive and maximise your career opportunities.

A global survey by staffing agency Kelly Services confirmed employees who used upskilling for internal promotions, are now primarily doing it to change employers, or to enter an entirely new field of work. Sixty percent of workers are considering or actively seeking further education or training. The study also found that Gen Y is more likely to be motivated by the prospect of a promotions with their current employer than Gen X or even Baby Boomers. The best means of skills development according to 58% of today’s workers is continued education, and just 26% value seminars and webinars. In addition, the responsibility for skills development is shifting from employer to employee.

The British Council’s ‘Going Global 2014’ study also revealed that higher education is booming in Sub-Saharan Africa. Between 2000 and 2010, enrolments have more than doubled. Looking back over the last 40 years, the higher education system in the region has been expanding at almost twice the global rate.

The good news for employers who invest in training and education is that this investment is key motivator for valuable staff to stay.

“Continuous upskilling is not only to the benefit of students themselves,” says Dr Johan Swanepoel, director, Wits Plus. “We live in a knowledge economy and not staying abreast of new developments will put almost everybody at a big disadvantage. South Africa needs to survive in a competitive global economy and our workforce cannot fall behind. The government realised this more than a decade ago and the Skills Development and Skills Development Levy acts were aimed at promoting continuous learning. This is why many professional bodies use a system of CPD points to encourage and even compel their members to continue to upgrade their knowledge and skills.”

In South Africa, many people cannot afford to study full time and not earn an income. Part-time studies offer that option. Many students work as temps or locums and are attending classes after hours. Having access to a

lecturer to guide students through the course in a structured way and providing an opportunity to network, but also add valuable growth from the learned experiences of others through the forming of study and discussion groups.

Distance learning is popular because it is a flexible method of learning and allows students to control their education completely. You study in your own time, at your own pace. “At some institutions, students can register any time of the year without having to wait for a new semester or academic year to start. Distance learning is ideal for working professionals, because you decide when to study, allowing you to get your training and qualifications while balancing studies with work and family responsibilities.

It is very important that those who know what they want to study, why they want to study that field and who have clear objectives, compared to those who register, thinking that they ‘need to do something’, but who don’t have a clear goal in mind, are much more likely to succeed.

Next follows dedication and perseverance. Part-time students often have to juggle a number of balls and if they are not very dedicated, giving up becomes a tempting option. Those who persevere may take a bit longer than initially anticipated, but they will get there eventually and reap the benefits.

Due to the demands of studying via distance learning, successful students do tend to develop skills in time management, self-discipline, critical thinking, and problem solving, as a result, they are able to set themselves apart from full-time residential students with only academic knowledge. Distance learning might be tough, but in the end, you’ll reap the benefits and reward of having both qualification and work experience and serves as a considerable advantage, as employers generally place great value and favour candidates who have work experience and practical workplace skills.

I believe it’s time that for professionals to make a date with themselves and reflect on what they need to do to stay abreast, and succeed in today’s rapidly shifting business landscape.

I’ll end my message with one of my favourite quotes by Charles Darwin. “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.

RIO DE JANEIRO The 2016 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, is a major international multi-sport event in the tradition of the Olympic Games as governed by the International Olympic Committee, being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

R

io de Janeiro, Brazil was founded in

1565 by the Portuguese as a fortification against French privateers who trafficked wood and goods from Brazil. Piracy played a major role in the city’s history and there are still colonial fortresses to be visited. The Portuguese fought the French for nearly 10 years, both sides having rival native tribes as allies.

For the next two centuries it was an unim-

portant outpost of the Portuguese Empire, until gold, diamonds, and ore were found in Minas Gerais in 1720. As the nearest port, Rio became the port for these minerals and replaced Salvador as the main city in the colony in 1763.

When Napoleon invaded Portugal, the Royal Family moved to Brazil and made Rio the capital of the Kingdom. Brazil became independent in 1822, it adopted the Monarchy as its form of government. Many historians

and brazilians are nostalgic of the Royal and Imperial times, which is reflected in many place names and shop names.

Sight seeing

Corcovado The view of Rio from the top of Corcovado hill with its landmark statue of Cristo Redentor is a breathtaking experience. There are superb views of the Zona Sul and inland to the Maracana stadium.

The construction of a railroad to Corcovado was ordered by Pertro II and in 1885, a steam train brought the first visitors up the steep mountainside. 50 years later the statue of Cristo Redentor was assembled on site and opened on October 12, 1931.

This statue on top of Corcovado hill is Rios ultimate symbol, receiving over one million

visitors a year.

Before visiting the statue check on the weather, because on cloudy days the peak is enveloped by clouds throughout the day and more often in the late afternoon. The afternoons usually have less haze and no backlight when taking photos in the direction of Pão de Açúcar.

At dusk, you can watch as the city lights come on and the statue is bathed in golden lights. When there are low clouds, consider going to the Dona Marta lookout by taxi.

Rio de Janeiro is one of the most visited cities in the Southern Hemisphere and is known for its natural settings, Carnival, samba, bossa nova, and balneario beaches such as Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Ipanema,

and Leblon. In addition to the beaches, some of the most famous landmarks include; the Sambódromo , a permanent grandstandlined parade avenue which is used during Carnival and Maracanã Stadium, one of the world’s largest football stadiums.

Rio de Janeiro is on the far western part of a strip of Brazil’s Atlantic coast, close to the Tropic of Capricorn, where the shoreline is oriented east–west. Facing largely south, the city was founded on an inlet of this stretch of the coast, Guanabara Bay and its entrance is marked by a point of land called Sugar Loaf “the calling card” of the city.

Downtown is the historic core of the city, as well as its financial centre. Sites of inter-

est include the Paço Imperial, built during colonial times to serve as the residence for the Portuguese governors of Brazil; many historic churches, such as the Candelária Church, São Jose, Santa Lucia, Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Santa Rita, São Francisco de Paula, and the monasteries of Santo Antônio and São Bento. The Centro also houses the modern concrete Rio de Janeiro Cathedral.

Around the Cinelândia square, there are several landmarks of the Belle Époque of Rio, such as the Municipal Theatre and the National Library building. Among its several museums, the National Museum of Fine Arts and the National Historical Museum are the most important. Other historical attractions in central Rio include its Passeio Público, an

18th-century public garden. Major streets include Avenida Rio Branco and Avenida Vargas.

The South Zone of Rio de Janeiro (Zona Sul) is composed of several districts, among which are São Conrado, Leblon, Ipanema, Arpoador, Copacabana, and Leme, which compose Rio’s famous Atlantic beach coastline. Other districts in the South Zone are Glória, Catete, Flamengo, Botafogo, and Urca.

This is the wealthiest part of the city and the best known world wide; the neighbourhood of Leblon in particular has the most expensive real estate in all of South America.

The neighbourhood of Copacabana beach hosts one of the world’s most spectacular

New Year’s Eve parties, as more than two million revellers crowd onto the sands to watch the fireworks display. The fireworks are launched from boats, to improve the safety of the event. Hang gliding is a popular activity on the Pedra Bonita (“Beautiful Rock”). After a short flight, gliders land on the Praia do Pepino Beach in São Conrado.

Bicycles.

The city has 160 km of cycle paths that, wherever they exist, are more suitable than driving in the city’s traffic. Most paths run alongside beaches. This bicycle sharing system is sponsored by the municipal government of Rio de Janeiro. The bike sharing system has 600 bicycles available at 60 rental stations in 14 neighbourhoods throughout the city.

Turn your Kryptonite into a Superpower

D

o you set positive intentions and say affirmations only to notice that you lose your “oomph” and struggle to operate from that mindset?

Kryptonite Your Inherited Negativity Bias

We are wired to scan for danger. This was passed down to us from our ancestors who were actual prey to predators and had to ensure their own survival, which was a worthy motivation. Today, this genetic encoding affects us in numerous ways: 1) We react to perceived stressful situations, e.g. a “DEADline” – as if we are being chased by a predator and are in actual danger that could result in death. (Note: stressful due to how we interpret and relate to it, not the reality of the situation) 2) We focus on what is wrong more than what is right. (When a colleague, manager, loved one has met your expectations on 4 “deliverables”, but failed at the 5th one, what do you focus on?)

3) This means that we spend more time in the Red Zone (state of chronic stress) than in the Green Zone (state of health & flow). In simple terms, spending too much time in the Red Zone can make you ineffective, unhappy and sick – mentally, physically and emotionally - and actually kills off the brain cells that help you cope with stress.

So how can you support yourself and stop waging this internal inner war that results in an undesirable quality of life?

The goal is to change your wiring so that you can operate from the GREEN Zone, rather than the RED Zone.

The ability to change your inherited biology. Yip, you heard me. New brain science has proven that the brain is able to change and does. This means you can actively re-wire your brain’s physical structure which then impacts your motivation, how you behave, react and think.

You can literally alter your grey matter and the hormone activity in your body to positively impact your DNA and wiring. You can become the hero and build your immunity to your inherited kryptonite. It’s your brain’s way of rewiring itself to meet your needs. How’s that for a superhero’s trusty side kick?

ACTIVATE – choose your chemicals!

Notice or create the experience: This needs to be rooted in your experience. Start to actively seek out and notice the multitude of moments

that are available to you every day that make you feel the way you want to feel. Real-time evidence of you showing up and demonstrating the superpower you want to grow. For example, if you want to build the sense of confidence, notice the moments during the day where you do something that you are proud of, e.g, when you aced a business meeting or successfully completed something. By consciously activating your awareness and changing the way your neurons relate, you choose the chemicals (dopamine & testosterone) that increase your confidence levels. You can recreate the experience by recalling a memory that made you feel the way you wish to feel.

Amplify feel the chemistry:

Grow the sensation of “x” (e.g. confidence) to get neurons wiring.

Having a cognitive awareness of, “I really nailed that presentation” is just paying lip service.

Yes, the first step is to start NOTICING (and high five that you have activated your awareness). However, if you are saying or thinking that whilst being busy with a list of things to do, or the sensation in your body and the emotion you are feeling is pretty vanilla, then it doesn’t impact your reality (or your biology and wiring which impacts how you experience life). You need to “plug in” to the experience and INFUSE it with attention and FEELING. Make an effort to feel and experience it as a sensation. That is how we learn and change, through “experience-based” neuroplasticity. Getting the neurons to fire together for a longer period of time for lasting results. So notice it and then grow it by being conscious of the feeling and getting your mind and body to connect the thought (cognitive awareness) to the experience.

Absorb make it part of your chemistry:

Allow your body to absorb it and become part

of biology: We change our wiring through repetition. You have approximately 75 trillion cells that are instantly sending neuropeptides that carry the hormones which communicates what you are experiencing and thinking.

(Your cells literally vibrate when they receive information). So send those chemicals to all those cells with the intention to soak up the “good vibrations” and get your neurons firing in a new, positive way. Be conscious of the sensation for at least 20 seconds so that your body has time to assimilate the experience, to help this new practiced awareness and experience become a part of your DNA.

Secret weapon:

Do this as many times a day as you can. You can do it in your car, at your desk, whilst being in a meeting - anywhere.

No one will notice you are doing it and it is the “invisible” secret weapon that you don’t need to create time for – all you have to do is Activate, Amplify and Absorb it.

Harley-Davidson Electric Motorcycle

I

conic American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson has been touting the “LiveWire” electric bike concept around for years. But only recently has the company committed to a timeline on production of anything like it.

“Harley-Davidson will produce an electric motorcycle for customers within the next five years,” writes Asphalt And Rubber citing Harley Senior Vice President of Global Demand, Sean Cummings, as quoted in the Milwaukee Business Journal.

A&R calls the comment “superfluous”, explaining that “lead times on new models – motorcycles that actually require engineering and design, not just a different fuel tank and extra letters – take roughly three to five years, from concept to completion.”

Still, until this month the electric motorcycle idea seemed like it could have stayed at the “publicity stunt” stage indefinitely for Harley-Davidson.

Now it seems to be happening.

Harley-Davidson CEO, Matt Levatich, explained that the company’s waiting on battery tech to improve. “Will we get to that Nirvana that customers say they want? Probably not,” he said.

“Will we get close enough? I believe we will,” as he’s quoted in Fortune.

A balance of performance, range and price.

Harley-Davidson has a strong brand image. Maybe

one of the strongest on Earth. Who doesn’t know what a Harley-Davidson is?

Analysts around the internet seem to think the company’s success is dependent on its ability to “change with the times” and create expensive bikes that will appeal to younger buyers. Electrification looks like a means to that end. Their brand equity on things far more profitable than motor vehicles, t-shirts and restaurant branding is worth a fortune.

Harley is big enough to experiment and it’s good to hear the company is planning on doing that.

Sora Electric Motorcycle

rom the mind of CEO & engineer, Jean-Pierre Legris, with the help of engineers Alexis Giroux and Guillaume Carl, the SORA project was born. We were then asked to join the group as industrial designers and stylists.

So, LITO’s expert team of engineers and industrial designers is proud to introduce a new generation of electric motorcycles. With its sleek design, state-of-the-art engineering and superior speed and performance, the SORA super bike is an unparalleled riding experience.

Driven by a liquid-cooled 3-phase AC induction motor and deriving power from 12 kWh lithiumpolymer battery modules, the Sora has a top speed of 190 km/h (118 mph) and produces 90 Nm (66.37 ft-lb) from the get go.

Lito has developed a power management system with three control modes – performance, normal and safe range. The latter enables the riders to plug in a destination and manages the amount of energy required to ensure they don’t get stranded in transit. This feature isn’t totally unfettered of course – the company states a maximum range of 100 km (62 mi) on the highway and more than 200 km (124 mi) in urban environments, which falls short of the 300 km (185 mi) range originally envisioned, but should still prove ample for the majority of riders.

When the battery indicator does dwindle away, you can expect to wait nine hours for a full recharge.

A carbon fibre fairing and aluminium chassis help to reduce weight, but with all that battery grunt in tow the bike still comes in at a rather hefty 260 kg (573.2 lbs.)

There’s also some interesting new technology on board, including an integrated GPS and touchscreen mounted on the tank, along with a compartment that allows you to store and recharge your mobile phone.

The bike is also designed to cater for those of stockier stature via the “world’s first ever electric motorbike seat” which allows the rider to adjust the seat height, even when the bike is in motion.

You can change the position of the seat to your liking and can have different riding positions depending on the terrain or how far you would be riding and how long.

The motorcycle is equipped with a high quality front fork, rear suspension and premium brakes. There is an onboard charging port which is quite rare in bikes and you get a lockable storage compartment. There is also an email notification system that alerts you or keeps you informed about the charge in your Sora.

The motorcycle has a regenerative braking system, it is made of lightweight carbon fibre which is the grade used in aircraft and it has an all aluminium chassis.

Sora isn’t just a smooth and powerful ride.

It is also an economic investment. You get to save money on your rides and do your bit for a better and greener tomorrow.

Maserati Lazareth Lazareth is a creator and modifier of very unusual bikes and cars, or a mix thereof, based in France.

L

azereth took a Maserati V8 engine and built a bike around it – this is the Lazareth LM 847.

Lazareth LM 847 construction – a V8 engine with a bike around it. Not much needs to be said about the Lazareth LM 847 – a picture speaks a thousand words. The structure is polyester and carbon.

Taillights are from a Ducati Panigale, The Lazareth LM 847’s car-big LED angled daytime running lamps are for visibility… or is the menacing look to warn others out the way.

Where a bike rider usually has just a fuel tank directly ahead of him/ her, on the Lazareth LM 847 it has something unusual between the

fuel tank and handle bars – the curved intake manifolds of a V8 engine. See the Maserati trident logo on the front top of the engine, and cursive Maserati brandlettering.

Dimensions: 2.65m long, 900mm wide, and 1 metre high, with the engine fitted in a 1850mm wheelbase

Technical specs

Maserati 4.7-litre 32-valve V8, same as af Maserati Gran Turismo with quoted output of 338kW at 7000rpm. Brakes are 420mm diameter twin discs with 8-piston brake calipers front, and 255mm 4-piston rear twin disc brakes.

This machine weighs 400kg, which is heavy for a bike, but just 400kg for a 338kW V8? This is truly a monster.

GeoOrbital’s wheel turns almost any bike into an electric bike

Michael Burtov: “My team at technology startup GeoOrbital did not re-invent the wheel.”

T

he newly developed bicycle wheel has the major components of an electric vehicle - a 500 watt motor, a lithium battery and a suite of electronics, all arranged to fit perfectly into the radial of a wheel made out of high density foam to avoid a flat tyre. “We call it the GeoOrbital wheel because we put the stationary [motor] assembly inside of an orbital wheel which contains the electronics and the battery.”

It’s a front-wheel assembly and fits on virtually any bike, with different rim sizes available. Adding it to any bike takes minutes, including the wheel, the throttle that fits on the handlebar, and a rear-wheel control wire. The throttle is thumb-operated and contains a light sensor telling you your battery condition. The wheel runs on a standard electric bike/scooter two-hub 500W brush less DC motor. The motor itself rotates.

It’s an off-the-shelf rim. The motor

sits within a triangle-shaped structure supporting the rim.

The motor is both the third strut and the power source.

A lithium ion battery powers the wheel with a current four-hour recharge time.

It uses a Panasonic 36V removable Lithium-Ion battery, the bike gets up to 50 miles per charge with pedal assist, or 20 miles without. There’s also a built-in USB port to charge your phone while you ride.The benefits of an electric bike wheel like this are

apparent from the outset. For starters, you don’t need to get rid of your existing bike to buy a new electric bike.

With GeoOrbital, you could commute on your road bike as-is when you choose, then you simply rotate the electric wheel when you are in need of some assistance. GeoOrbital uses proven and tested components without many constraints on size and position.

Let me count the ways by introducing myself: I am Dulaine Stander, a pharmacist living on a wine farm. I am lucky enough to be married to the executive Chef of Glen Carlou Wine farm, which means I am in a position to share the amazing story of good food, delicious wine and the privilege of living on a wine farm in the Paarl area. It’s also a photographer’s dream.

Glen Carlou has been described as one of the hidden gems of the Paarl wine route, situated on the R45 between Klapmuts and Franschhoek in the beautiful Western Cape. It boasts spectacular views from the restaurant, stunning wines and of course, the best food. My opinion on the food might not be completely objective but over the years I’ve had the privilege

of visiting some of the top restaurants in the Western Cape.

The venue: The restaurant itself is beautifully and tastefully furnished, with a deck offering stunning views to enjoy summer afternoons and a warm fire place with comfortable leather couches for those rainy winter days. It seats 50 guests, ensuring that the ambiance is always relaxed and intimate.

They are also perfectly set up to host weddings and exclusive dinner parties.

The chef, the inspiration and the

food: No write up of a wine farm can be complete without a review of the food. The dishes are locally inspired, with a superb balance of traditional flavours and contemporary ingredients.

Chef Johan is establishing his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the culinary circles of the Western Cape.

He has dedicated himself to improve on the past all the while delivering an exceptional taste experience. Ingredients are locally sourced and always in season. He creates a new menu with every season, which ensures that guests can expect a new experience with every visit.

His dishes are mostly inspired by traditional South African recipes, incorporating international gastronomic trends, and as an external observer of the creative process, I can only stand in

awe of his consistent ability and dedication to innovate, season after season. The “New Menu” process usually starts approximately a month before the change in season, and goes through several design and taste tests before final tasting by the management forum of the restaurant. The dishes always strive to showcase the wines produced on the farm and you will find wine recommendations with each dish.

Firm favourites during autumn included tea smoked duck ham, soft boiled duck egg, fig puree, parmesan, radish salad, orange water recommended with Quartz Stone Chardonnay as a starter.

The prize winning dish has to be the honey and black pepper Mozambican prawns; goats cheese tortellini, burnt butter, raisins and, pine nuts,

recommended with The Curator’s Collection Viognier.

For those of us not concerned with heart conditions, the fillet of beef, mushroom crust, charred onions, mushroom crème and deep fried herb butter, recommended with The Curator’s Collection Cabernet Franc is something to savour.

For those with a sweet tooth, be sure to try the Autumn Eaton mess, which is really just a very sexy trifle with a fancy name. It’s beautifully prepared with slow roasted pear, vanilla meringue, lemon curd, glazed figs and handmade vanilla ice cream.

And for my sisters in the race against the bulge…, give in to temptation and order the Rocky Road chocolate délice. You will not be disappointed.

When looking at the menu, the description of dishes is usually a

little intimidating at first glance.

This is because most chefs have a little secret – and the chef’s wife will share…

They want you to know exactly what you will be getting on your plate, but they don’t want to divulge all the details on how it will be prepared or presented.

So you will see the star of the dish – like the fillet of beef – and then a list of additional ingredients.

How it all comes together is where the magic happens, and in my experience, is prepared with as much love as wrapping a gift for a special person. They want you to be amazed when the waiter puts down your plate; they want you to sit back in your chair with pure pleasure after you place that first mouthful of heaven on your tongue. They sometimes take a sneak peak from the kitchen if a special guest is in the restaurant, just

FOOD & WINE & PHOTOGRAPHY to observe the reaction. From the time the amuse bouche (pre-starter) appears on the table to the last bite of the special desert. It’s all about sharing the love of food.

The Winter 2016 menu was launched on the 1st of June and promises to warm the hearts and bellies of guests even on the coldest winter afternoon.

Do yourself a favour, next time you visit Cape Town, take a drive out to the wine lands and turn off into Glen Carlou. Come and share a little taste of heaven. You will not be disappointed.

PHOTOGRAPHY ADVICE:

In a profession governed by empirical science, it is sometimes hard to find a creative outlet.

Photography has proven to be the fuel to the fire in my soul. I discovered photography about 5 years ago when I picked up my first Canon camera in 2011. I purchased it while on maternity leave after the birth of our daughter.

From the very first picture I knew it was love at first click. While I struggled during those first weeks with all the controls and buttons, it was a journey I was thoroughly enjoying. At least the camera came with a manual – unlike the baby…

Tutorials on light, settings, gear and how to get the perfect shot was the order of the day. I spent hours online with our daughter sleeping in my arms while I Googled article after article.

I have discovered a deep love for photographing people –capturing a perfect shot of a human. Not an image of the perfect human – the eyes, the lines, the wrinkles, the soul – the real human. Looking at my Instagram feed will clearly reveal that I have a love for the quirky.

Hands and feet, funny angles, random little things – I think that is what defines my style. It wasn’t until we moved to the farm in 2015 that I discovered how truly satisfying it is to delve into landscape photography. From a technical

perspective, I found this more of a challenge. You can’t tell a mountain to move a little to the left in order to get a better angle. You have to move your own body to get that perfect shot that you’ve got in your minds eye. While everybody loves a sunset, I have found these to be a little boring after a while, I hardly ever shoot sunsets, unless I have a perfect subject to photograph with the sunset as a backdrop.

My first pictures were horrible, I admit this freely and as I look through those, I can reflect on the journey I have travelled.

My epic failures included selective colouring, over-exposed shots, and some terrible focus challenges, but I have tried to learn from my mistakes. By no means am I claiming to be a professional. The beauty of the hobby is that you can always improve your skill. Almost like CPDs for pharmacists, you have

to keep up to date with the latest technology, new trends, and if you choose to make this a business, you have to keep yourself relevant within the market that you operate in.

I now look at a scene and imagine myself looking through the viewfinder of the camera, how I would change the elements in the shot and why it would be a perfect shot. I regularly travel from Cape Town to Paarl and Malmesbury, and the seasonal changes in the landscapes are breath-taking, from the canola fields in spring to the snowcapped mountains in winter.

Black and white – why the stark contrast?

I once read that black and white photography forces the viewer to colour the image with his own perceptions and emotions. I find this to be true and so profound. A good black and white photo can elicit a whole

host of feelings and create such emotions within the viewer that it is often a more powerful image than colour image. It is stripped to its bare minimum – no distractions, no pretty colours, just the raw reality. It talks to the heart and soul of the human, not just the eyes. It forces a deeper connection between the viewer and the story that the photographer aims to tell with the image. It is within this that I find the definition of art. Is the purpose of art not to create an emotional reaction to the piece – is that not why we purchase art?

And in this, I find the true value of photography. It is a little bit of the soul captured in a split second, immortalised forever.

Catching time and pinning it down for a moment and showcasing what I saw, presenting it as a gift to the client, that makes my little artist’s heart beat just that little bit faster.

MANAGING HIV/AIDS IN YOUR WORKPLACE Research suggests that while there is awareness of HIV/AIDS, there is still a lot of misunderstanding. Tim Boshoff from Redpeg South Africa, shares some insight on how companies can “debunk some junk” as he puts it.

T

here is a lot of access to the facts about HIV/AIDS through the media; we’ve all been exposed to HIV/AIDS awareness and preventionrelated messaging in the media, to the point of becoming desensitised. While these mass media campaigns can be associated with greater knowledge of HIV prevention, increased condom use and HIV testing , research in the manufacturing and engineering sector shows that basic HIV/ AIDS awareness training in the workplace is still necessary as the media does not often deal with the myths that go along with HIV/AIDS. These myth-based attitudes lead to stigmatisation and discrimination, which stops people getting the help they need because they fear being singledout or rejected.

WHAT THE CODE SAYS

One of the key principles (for the protection of the rights of individuals) of the Department of Labour’s revised Code of Good Practice is the elimination of “unfair discrimination against or stigmatisation of workers on the grounds of real or perceived HIV status”. It states that it’s every worker’s and employer’s responsibility to do so.

So, how do we address the root cause of stigma and discrimination? Section 8.1 of the Code

argues that workplaces need to provide comprehensive education programmes to help workers to understand the importance of “changing risk behaviours related to HIV infection” and in particular these should deal with myths and misconceptions. Section 9.3 of the Code supports this by stating that up to date information and training on HIV/AIDS must be made available so that informed decisions can be made and appropriate measures taken in the workplace. That last point is really the raison d’être of any workplace HIV/AIDS education programme.

What I can gather from the information Tim Bossoff shares, as well as other reliable resources, is that HIV/AIDS discrimination is an ongoing challenging factor in the workplace. Below are some tips & advice to make sure you are maintaining a legal and ethical practice and compassionate behaviour towards your employees and/ or colleagues with HIV/AIDS.

For the employer:

• No person is obligated or may be forced to disclose their HIV status, unless this is justified by law, in which case it needs to be a legal condition of employment • No person may be forced to undergo an HIV test.

• A person who is HIV positive, or has AIDS is

entitled to: Access to appropriate medical care Support and counselling Confidentiality An employer cannot demand to know if the cause of an illness is HIV infection An employer may not disclose the HIV/AIDS status of his employees May not refuse treatment (physical or psychological) for these employees When an employee is diagnosed with HIV/ AIDS the employee may not be dismissed because of being infected with this virus.

An employer must at all times provide, as far as is reasonably practicable, a safe workplace, also ensuring that the risk of occupational exposure to HIV is minimised If you suffer from AIDS/HIV and feel discriminated against you can take steps of action by contacting your Bargaining Council or the CCMA.

Keep your weight in check

Let’s be honest, there is very little motivation to get up early during the cold winter months to exercise.

Instead of completely letting go of keeping fit this winter, try these options to keep your weight in check.

• Sauna: did you know sitting in a warm sauna causes your heart to beat up to 30% faster? (according to a Harvard Health Publication). It also aids with relaxation and stress relief, improves your skin, increases blood circulation, strengthens your immune system, reduces respiratory ailments and is a fun way to burn calories.

Definitely the “hottest way to good health” this winter.

• A hot “slimming” bath: Epsom salts have been promoted as a detox & weight loss aid for many decades now. Adding 250g of Epsom salts to a

hot bath and soaking for more than 30 minutes will draw out toxins in the body. According to Rosemary Waring, a British biochemist at the University of Birmingham, magnesium & sulphate gets absorbed through the skin, taken up by the blood levels and rid the body from toxins. Taking at least two slimming baths a week will speed up your metabolism and weight loss.

Get enough sleep: various studies have shown that too little sleep decreases levels of the hormone leptin in the body, which is essential for fat burning and appetite regulation. Cortisol levels spike with a lack of sleep, disturbing blood sugar levels which results in weight gain around the waist area.

A 10 – 30 minute brisk walk when the sun is shining is a great way to soak up vitamin D and to get the body moving and calories burning.

Bikram or hot yoga: Bikram or other “hot yoga” performed in a room with temperatures of 3035◦C is a trend most celebrities in America take to. I think it is a “hot” fitness regime for the cold winter seasons. Hot yoga promises physical benefits including muscular strength, endurance, flexibility and balance while increasing fluid loss due to increase sweating.

Eating meals with chilli or cayenne pepper fires the metabolism and speeds up weight loss.

Drinking enough water. When it is cold we often forget to drink enough water. Try substituting cold water for a cup of warm lemon water or add two to three cups of green tea to your daily regime to keep your metabolism heightened.

Change your skin care products: During winter months the skin tends to get dry and flaky, therefore it is of utmost importance to change your skin care products during the cold season to ensure the best moisture and treatment. Book it for a day that you are not working and have no social commitments, as it is advised not to re-apply make-up, especially your concealer, directly after a peeling mask. TULI GAME RESERVE BACKGROUND The Northern Tuli Game Reserve is a wildlife conservation area protected as a wilderness of savannah, riverine forests, marshland, open plains and sandstone cliffs. It is not only a unique wilderness area with an abundance of African wildlife, but also has a rich archaeological history. The earliest evidence of life in the area are the fossil excavations which have been found in the Shashe Limpopo region. The region was inhabited by Stone Age man, as the forerunner to a series of civilisations including the Mapungubwe culture of the 12th and 13th centuries, and the Zimbabwe civilisation. In more recent times Mzilikazi, the Zulu chief, and his followers, who were the forerunners of the Matabele nation in Zimbabwe, moved across the area. The reserve was part of the territory disputed between the Matabele and Bamangwato tribes. Many early explorers and hunters passed through and wrote about the Limpopo, Macloutsie and Shashe Rivers. At the end of the last century the Rhodesian pioneer column travelled up the Pitsani River on their way to Fort Tuli and subsequently to what became Rhodesia. Following the outbreak of the Anglo Boer war, a series of skirmishes were fought in the Tuli area between Boer and British forces. Some of the first military engagements of the Boer War took place in the vicinity, including the Battle of Bryce’s Store on the 2nd of November 1899.

The CDE was established 20 years ago to help patients and doctors manage the growing epidemic of diabetes. The Head Office in Houghton is responsible through a nation wide clinic system, for the care of more than 20 000 patients. Light it up

Maximize the light in your home. After location, good lighting is the one thing that every buyer wants in a home. Clean the windows, change the lampshades, increase the wattage of your light bulbs and cut the bushes outside to let in sunshine. Do what you have to to make your house bright and cheerful – it will make it more sellable.

Conceal the critters

You might think a cuddly dog would warm the hearts of potential buyers but not everyone is a dog or cat lover.

Buyers don’t want to walk into your home and see a bowl full of dog food, smell the kitty litter box or have pet hair stuck to their clothes. It will give buyers the impression that your house is not clean.

Mirrors and curtains

This sounds like a simple concept, but it really makes a huge difference.

Make small rooms appear bigger and dark rooms seem brighter by adding an attractive wall mirror and replace any old curtains and blinds.

Natural light makes room dimensions seem more generous and something as simple as curtains change the feel of an entire room.

Quick fixes before selling always pay off.

Mammoth make overs, not so much. You probably won’t get your money back if you take on a huge improvement project before you put your house on the market. Get a new fresh coat of paint on the walls. Replace door handles, cabinet hardware, make sure closet doors are on track, fix leaky taps and clean the grout.

When people see one high-end appliance they think all the rest are expensive too and it updates the kitchen.

Neaten up the yard

Refresh your front yard according to the season.

Trim back dead plants and foliage and plant attractive flowers in flower beds. Keep any walkways clean and cut back any tree or shrub branches. Replace any damaged boards on your deck or fence and apply a fresh coat of paint, or stain and sealant if required. If kids’ toys are taking over the space, put some in storage.

Never do anything costly or major like adding

Not everyone is going to love your home, in fact some buyers might not like your home at all.

Don’t get discouraged when you get negative feedback about your home. See it for what it is.

People have different needs when it comes to property. The most important feedback is what the market place thinks your home is worth. This way you can adjust early if need be.

Relax

All you can do is your best and make sure you have done everything you possibly can to position the price of your home right, market your home right and select the best agent.

Once you have ticked all the boxes, sit back and relax and work closely with your agent as a partnership.

Allow the agent to do his/her job and be open to understanding the market and everything will work out just fine. Selling property can be an enjoyable experience if you have all the information first and do your bit. So sit back and watch the buyers stream in.

ou have invested years into studying and working hard for your degree, completed all the required hours, long shifts and late nights of community service. Finally new doors are opening up for you and the industry options are endless. This is the time to make sure that you choose an option that not only pays well, but also suits your personality, and that it is in line with achieving your personal goals and dreams.

“Nothing is constant but change” as the old saying goes, and sometimes working in the same pharmacy for 10 years does not appeal to everyone, especially when you are young and adventurous. In this regard, locum work is a great option, but do remember that you can start locum work at any stage in your career.

Do your own research

Contact a pharmacy, clinic or hospital directly this can be a rather time consuming procedure and you need to be prepared to handle the administration, registrations and paper work that comes with choosing this option.

Call up a locum agency, that will likely have posi-

tions available around the country and even possibly, the world. Being hired by an institution directly could also lead to earning a higher salary.

But most importantly, agencies can help significantly with administration, contracts, licenses, accommodation and sometimes transportation arrangements. Agencies can save you time while you focus on your current job. It is great to be part of an institution that continuously present you with different options to choose and evolve from.

Choose the right locum agency

• Scan the Internet, Linked-In and Facebook for a feel of the agency and opt for a reputable one • Ask about their work availability; secured long term contracts and take note of any large organisations that they are affiliated with, as this gives a clear indication of growth with the agency • Listen to other locums’ feedback regarding the agency • If you are interested in International contracts, make sure that the agency is Internationally registered before joining.

• Also question their infrastructure regarding the technology and methods they use to notify you about work; check if they offer accommodation or assist with the arranging there of; is there a system in place that rates your service and do they offer training and tools that result in continuous growth and improvement for you as a locum; also make sure they have a reward system in place, this is important for career satisfaction and building your confidence as a locum in the industry.

• Enquire about the specific payment methods they use and be clear on the dates that you get paid, also on the percentage of commission that will be deducted by the agency (if any) or any other service fee. Always ask if there are any hidden fees.

• Do they offer any extra services or benefits such as notifications of conferences, a magazine or other continuous training tools?

Locum etiquette

Continuously changing your work environment can be challenging at first, especially when it comes to dealing with new co-workers, systems and clients or patients. Unfamiliar territory in different towns or even cities can also be overwhelming.

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of developing your emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. In order for us to survive we need to socially connect with other people and yes, even strangers.

As a locum at the work place it is important to: • Leave a strong first impressions. When a person makes a bad first impression, the negative feelings are harder to overcome than a betrayal that occurs after ties are established according to latest scientific studies.

When meeting your co-workers and supervisor for the first time; dress appropriately, avoid wearing red, yellow or purple; be friendly yet professional; smile & speak with confidence in a clear voice; walk, stand or sit in an upright position with good posture; listen more than you speak; wear a neutral scented fragrance.

Arrive at work, at least 15 minutes before your shift starts, and be sure to be the last to leave after your shift ended. This will earn you a “great worker” reputation.

Clean up after yourself, be it in the kitchen area or on your work counter. Untidiness can be extremely annoying.

Do not participate in gossip, especially with your work colleagues. They are not your childhood friends or family and if you find yourself in a scenario where someone is gossiping about another co-worker, politely remove yourself from the environment.

Always be positive,go to sleep early and wake up early the next morning in order to arrive bright and fresh at work. Listen to your favourite music or motivational speaker on your way to work. This will help with keeping a clear open mind and put you in a great mood.

Make sure you understand clearly what exactly is expected from you at the work place. Ask questions that matter and that will help you understand more clearly what is required of you.

Offer professional service at all times. Do not speak to another co-worker or colleague while attending to a client or patient. They are paying for your advice and time, therefore give them your full attention and you will immediately come across more professional and more intelligent (believe it or not but people are more impressed and inclined to follow instructions or advise when it is offered in a one on one basis with no interruptions) Always inform your agency well ahead of time if you cannot make a shift or if you have any challenges to solve. Agencies appreciate your clear communication and some will even try and assist to help solve your specific challenge, and if not, it will give them enough time to find a replacement for your shift. This kind of communication shows responsibility and will maintain a good impression with your agency.

Always offer your best at work and in due time your efforts will be rewarded.
