Greetings on behalf of the Delta Delta Lambda Chapter of The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated!
Thank you for retrieving our latest newsletter The Alpha Times. This newsletter is a tool we use to share relevant and valuable information within the chapter and with the community.
To the uninitiated, we are the first, distinguished, and leading black Greek organization of Palm Beach County, chartered on January 1, 1947, by nine well-educated men with a purposeful vision. Since that time, the chapter has introduced hundreds of quality college-educated men to the world and through the portal of Palm Beach County as Alpha men. The chapter has reliably promoted enhancing the quality of life of this community through its aims: Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for all Mankind! Moving as one entity our chapter relishes its members populating nearly every professional field namely: Education, Medicine, Law, Entrepreneur, Police, and others.
I am delighted to be serving as the President of Delta Delta Lambda Chapter for the calendar years 2023, and 2024 with a robust emphasis on mentorship, and community, and to continue to transform our communities for the better. Our focal point will be on the L.I.F.E. series (lessons in financial empowerment) and Health issues.
We encourage you to spend some time reading through this vibrant informational instrument to learn more about our chapter and the myriad of events we underwrite locally. We also encourage you to peruse our social media links for the most recent activities affecting our community.
Sincerely,
Ryan Dobson

Past Chapter President
2020-2022
My Dear Brothers,
As I conclude my presidency, I am elated to pass on the chair to a very capable brother, Ryan Dobson ('03 ΔΔΛ), who will serve you for the next term. I am encouraged by his new cabinet's enthusiasm, ability, and availability to serve this office with the regal aspect it requires.
In thirty-four years of Alphadom, experience admits the following: This seat offers a steep learning curve of communication, intelligence, and patience when working with the chapter. Two years elapse quickly, and if significant changes are to emote, it involves a buy-in from the chapter to be successful. Over that period, we placed precipitous demands on the chapter for a transcending mobility for the (then) future including:
• Aggressive Reclamation Plan
• Fraternal Awareness in the Community
• Chapter Voting Procurement
• Increase in Chapter Funds by the end of the fiscal year
• Chapter Growth
I’m excited to report the bell tolled and the chapter rallied to the call. Through chapter collaboration - all of the forecasting models had a meteoric increase…significantly!
I truly appreciate the support and encouragement the chapter has shown me and my cabinet the last two years and wish to make clear my gratitude for being able to get to know each of you both (professionally and personally) during my term as president. For sure, without your friendship, backing, and cooperation, my time in the seat would not have been prosperous.
I look forward to keeping in contact and hearing updates about your work, personal life, or whatever! Please don’t hesitate to get in touch should you need anything or want to catch up. Deemed an Effective Communicator, I return calls :-)
I want to again thank you and extend those wishes to our entire team. What an incredible and fruitful journey it has been.
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
No man is an island, Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manor of thine own Or of thine friend's were. Each man's death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.
Yours in Alpha,
George L. Lockhart

Brother Michael Brown, Esquire, EΔ '16 Past Chapter Vice President
Brothers,
Over the last two years, I have been in awe at the feats my brothers have accomplished. Dozens of community service events, thousands of dollars raised in scholarships, and 13 new brothers welcomed into the house. In addition to this, we have an increased presence within the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and other community organizations.
Mobilizing the committees has been a joy! Over the two years, all committees were wholly involved with their work for the fraternity - especially the Political Action Committee. I must infuse my favorite labor of love was energizing the brothers to get trained to participate in the voting precincts. Surely, we are ready to elevate to the next level - hosting a voting station.
It has truly been an honor to serve as the Vice-President of The Delta Delta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha over the last two years, and I'm looking forward to what the Chapter has in store for 2023!
I am looking forward to it.
Respectfully,
Mike Brown

Delta Delta Lambda Chapter
Seventy-Five Years of Service
Founded January 1, 1947
Palm Beach County
On January 4, 2023, Mayor Keith James, of the City of West Palm Beach, issues a proclamation to Delta Delta Lambda Chapter (DDL) commemorating seventy-five years of its existence in West Palm Beach, FL. DDL is the oldest Black Greek organization in the Palm Beach County.
Historically, after World War II in 1945, the population of Palm Beach County grows quickly. While Blacks work on the railroad and help build hotels, some run their own businesses. In 1940, Brother Clifton G. Dyson (AX) opens up a drugstore in West Palm Beach, and becomes a registered real estate developer, and a broker. A graduate from Fisk University, where he serves as president of the famous Fisk Jubilee Singers, becomes a member of the prestigious Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He associates with Brother Dr. Robert Smith, Sr. (ΔB), a noted dentist in the area from BethuneCookman College and Alpha Southern Regional Director.
During the Fall of 1946, these two bring down Brother Dr. William Stewart from Jacksonville, FL, who opens Roosevelt HS. He, in turn, brings Brother Britton G. Sayles to replace him as the principal. These four identifies five other black-educated Alpha brothers gather to formulate this chapter On January 1, 1947, is granted a charter with the Greek letters Delta Delta Lambda Chapter. Unknowingly, they become "trailblazers, role models, and pioneers of fraternal life.
We will culminate the celebration of this special evening on March 4, 2023, at the Marriott Hotel, 4000 RCA Boulevard, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410. Honoring the founding of the chapter, its charter founders, and the fraternity Jewels. We will be celebrating with all of you. Brother Fletcher Mayes (Delta Beta chapter ’81) is the proprietor.

The Ebony Chorale of the Palm Beaches represents singers, most of whom are not professional musicians by vocation, who dedicate their time to striving for excellence in the performance of choral music. Each week they give of themselves to be the best vocal musicians possible. Vacations and schedules are arranged to meet the demands of rehearsals and performances. They sing for the joy and the love of music.
Founded and directed by Dr. Orville T. Lawton, The Ebony Chorale made its debut in 1992. With the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, the Chorale sang the choral movement of Beethoven's monumental Ninth Symphony for the dedication of the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, West Palm Beach, Florida. The Chorale has performed with the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, James Judd, Conductor, and the Boston Esplanade Orchestra, Harry Rabinowitz. The Chorale was featured in Klezmer Does The Blues by Aaron Kula, producer, in a celebration of the connectedness between Jewish folk music and the Negro Spiritual. Additionally, the Chorale performed the concert version of Porgy and Bess with the Klezmer Orchestra featuring international opera stars Elizabeth Graham as Bess and Alvie Powell as Porgy. In the Celebration of George Gershwin's100th Anniversary, the Chorale performed with the Israeli Chamber Orchestra doing works by Gershwin conducted by Philippe Entremont. Additional performances have been for the Norton Art Gallery's Muse Series, Florida Atlantic University's African American Heritage Celebrations, University of South Florida's Conference on The Negro Spiritual, Sloan Kettering Cancer Research Foundation, and numerous performances and concerts including two collaborative patriotic concerts with Masterworks Chorus of the Palm Beaches.
In November 2006, the Chorale performed at the West Africa Choral and Performing Arts Festival in Ghana, West Africa. In March 2008, the Chorale participated in the Folk Song Competition at the International Festival of Choral Music in Verona, Italy. There were choirs from 25 countries represented at the festival, and The Ebony Chorale received a Second Place Silver Award in its first international competition. Additional performances were in Rome, Florence, and Naples.
In July 2010, the Chorale traveled to Salzburg, Austria, and performed in the Cantus Salisburgensis Summer Festival. The Chorale performed Mozart's Coronation Mass in the historic Salzburg Cathedral, directed by Maestro János Czifra, with an additional performance of selections from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana on the opening night of the festival. In February 2012, the Chorale participated in the Heritage Festival of Negro Spirituals in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 2013 the Chorale was performed in Prague, the Czech Republic, Vienna, Austria, and Bratislava, Slovakia. In July 2014, the Chorale presented a full concert for The National Association of Negro Musicians' 95th Convention in Los Angeles, California, and hosted the convention in West Palm Beach in July 2016. In 2015 the Chorale traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, and gave concerts with local African choirs. Most recently, a small ensemble from the Chorale performed in a promotional performance of Disney's The Lion King with three cast members from the Broadway company. The Chorale has also been the backup choir for several of the Colors of Christmas Concerts with such artists as Peabo Bryson, Roberta Flack, Stefanie Mills, James, Ingram, Melissa Manchester, Rubin Stoddard, Aaron Neville, and Patty Austin. Also, a performance with John Tesh. In addition, the Chorale has been the lead-in choir for such Gospel greats as Mary, Mary, Shirley Caesar, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, and Ty Tribbett. In February 2019, the Chorale will perform with Damian Sneed as part of the Kravis Center's Gospel Gala series.
In 2018 the Chorale won First Place in the Negro Spiritual Competition in Detroit, Michigan. To date, the Chorale has given over 500 performances throughout the state of Florida and in California, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Michigan.
The Chorale will represent the State of Florida with the We Have A Dream Choral Festival in Washington, D.C., in honor of the 60th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's I Have A Dream speech in June 2023.
"The Ebony Chorale has the energy of a gospel choir and the precision of a fine classical ensemble."

THE IMPORTANCE OF BROTHERHOOD
fPledging The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc..
By Brother William Hutchings, Delta Beta''89
During my collegiate pledge time, the days seemed dreary, long, and dark. However, the process created an indissoluble oath with my line brothers who finished the journey with me. As a result, we still look out for each other when we are down and out and celebrate one brother who has accomplished a milestone in his life. When I meet another Alpha brother, we speak on the common thread which binds us – the pledging process. For it is in this progression that the brotherhood is shaped and churns around common goals and aspirations. Oh, we could talk for hours before migrating to casual talk. As a result, these (my) fraternity brothers make an obligation to each other beyond college, and promises are set for life. Some believe 'pledging' has no function in joining the fraternity. I say if the pledge process is detailed in such a fashion to weed out those who fail to keep their head when all about them are losing theirs - then it has merit. It becomes a life lesson. Ready to deploy when needed. Once one has crossed the burning sands, the word "brotherhood" has meaning and is used from the time we start recruitment of qualified men and continues to be used every day to describe why we joined or what we're looking for in the Fraternity. Few people ever find their true meaning in the word "Brotherhood" but for some reason, Greeks everywhere use it because they think it is what brings us all together. I can assure you if the process is stringent and clean – the brotherhood bond cannot be easily broken. For me, I am my Brother's Keeper!

Historically, Black males have had a unique experience in America that has not always been positive. However, today a Black male has been the President of the United States. Black males also hold positions as chief executive officers of corporations, attorneys, college professors, doctors, and other prominent and influential leaders in our society. With all of the success gained by Black men, who, in 2009, comprised approximately 12.6% of the U.S. population, they also account for approximately 39.4% of the prison and jail population (Nealy, 2008).
One way to continue to improve professional jobs while decreasing the penal system is exposure to positions of power early on. Early on, male students' language and cognitive skills begin to cement around their settings. Language barriers thwart critical thinking skills. The opposite is also true. As such, young black males can be effective conversationalists at dinner and at social gatherings, capable of expressing their thoughts on current events, books, music, art, and other subjects (Lerner, 2009). DDL's Men of Tomorrow (M.O.T.) Program supports the latter by identifying black male youths in their freshmen year of high school and infusing the abilities to develop greater independence, have an increased attention span, and can often spend long periods working on activities they enjoy, learning to use good judgment, express challenges at school with a black male, and shows interest in sports teams, social media, or pop culture. The M.O.T. experience offers exposure to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) during our college tour over spring break, to core classes for tutoring (i.e. physics, math, music), and conversation with Alphas who are entrepreneurs. All free of charge! Our data backs up the rhetoric. Since 1987 DDL has graduated one hundred percent of its MOT members who have completed all four years (1,679). More impressive is 90% of this number are college graduates. What is more exciting is many of the former M.O.T.s are giving back. Former local M.O.T.s include:

Now their names shine over the music hall at Glades Central High School.
“I felt humbled,” said Willie Pyfrom, 86, who served as the school's band director for 37 years. “I didn't teach because I had to. I taught because I wanted to. I had the joy of teaching some of the best kids."
Flanked by his children, grandchildren and hundreds of former students, Pyfrom unveiled Dec. 9 the silver lettering on the brick wall of the music building. Willie and Estella Pyfrom taught at the Belle Glade high school for four decades and in other classrooms around the county for almost 60 years.
“It doesn't get any better than this,” Willie said at the ceremony. The only thing missing was his wife. Estella, the founder of Estella’s Brilliant Bus, a mobile computer lab that served students in rural and underconnected parts of the county, died two years ago.
