TALKING WITH TJ

As we begin our journey into the descent of madness that is my mind and the crazy antics of my life, I would like to first introduce myself. My name is TJ, blah blah blah, that sums it up and all you need to know. Whew… got past the CRAP no one cares about! Now for the good stuff.

Mustang culture is one that is very unique and brings together people from all walks of life. One thing is for sure though, the STANG Mag crew isn’t your typical crew. We are a bunch of weirdos, oddballs, and outcasts. We party hard and live by our ride or die motto and have adventures like no other.

From partying in various spots all over the U.S., to touring some of America’s most haunted sites, to having my ass spanked by a beautiful Latina in Las Vegas in front of a restaurant packed full of guests (and owning it), it’s never a dull moment! All I can say is... strap in, rev the shit out of your motor, and let’s go!

YUENGLING BREWERY

Welcome back! This month STANG Magazine hosted the Yuengling Beer Peaky Blinders Tour and Hanoverville Road House Dinner. Yuengling is located in Pottsville, PA. D.G. Yuengling and Son Brewery was first started in 1829 and has now spanned six generations as well as having earned the title of America’s oldest brewery. Yuengling is 193 years old, which is quite a feat for any organization. This year we decided to do a Peaky Blinders theme. So, everyone had to dress up in Peaky Blinders attire or roaring 1920s speakeasy attire. Men came dressed in full suits and fedoras. Women came in lavish dresses with flapper headbands and cigarette holders. Inside we got to tour the old historic brewery and see the underground caves which was used to keep the beer cold and aide in aging the lager to help create that smooth and bold Yuengling flavor. The caves were

wet, damp, and cold which is the perfect natural environment to keep beer cool, especially in the olden days prior to refrigeration. In addition, we got special access into the old historic bar inside Yuengling, where the old employees would take their breaks and have a fresh Yuengling to wind down. It’s crazy to sit in a place where so many people have been before, if only these walls could talk. I am sure its rich with stories of employee experiences.

For dinner the tour continued to the famous haunted Hanoverville Roadhouse, which was established in 1825. The Hanoverville Roadhouse has been a post office, a general store, a brothel, and a biker bar.

Inside the historic restaurant you are greeted with beautiful architecture of years gone by. I absolutely love it. Interestingly, there is an original 35 mm reel of poltergeist on display in the lounge. Holy crap, I mean, come on that movie is epic! Rumors report of

various spirits who haunt the grounds and various paranormal activity including restaurant items being moved and caught on camera. Definitely a must visit for anyone in the area. In addition, Canned Heat and Tiny Tim has performed here, making it a true piece of music history. I’m sure Tiny Tim tip toed through the tulips at the restaurant. Quite an interesting history. Now the current personality and owner of the restaurant is Mark Dennis. Trust me, this guy knows how to make a good drink. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and holy crap, has magic hands. The Long Islands were so smooth, yet you couldn’t tell there was alcohol in them and it was not because of lack thereof, but because of a perfect blend of alcohols. It definitely got me feeling good. Also try his Zombie drink. WOW. Sweet but very smooth. The food was amazing, perfectly crafted crab cakes, steaks with juice just dripping out of the meat, the sides perfectly cooked with just the right of caramelization. Trust me, go here! You will not be disappointed, and while your there, give Mark a shout out!

WHEN JACOB WAS 16, HE GOT HIS FIRST CAR, A 1977 MUSTANG COBRA II, BY TRADING A REPAIRED TV AND TWO

VCRS.

When Jacob was 16, he got his first car, a 1977 Mustang Cobra II, by trading a repaired TV and two VCRs. As you would imagine, it was not in the best condition and required a lot of work to be road worthy. Although it broke down and left Jacob stranded numerous times during high school, he loved that car but had to sell it before going into the U.S. Navy. Eventually, he was in a position to buy another Cobra II, and in 2017 luckily found and bought one from Texas. He lovingly named the car “Amy” after his amazing wife and began his own upgrades and personalization.

EYE CATCHER–1994 GT

I’VE NEVER BEEN A ONE TYPE OF CAR PERSON. I JUST LIKE ANY THAT CATCH MY EYE.

When I was growing up one of my brother in law always had Mustangs around. Sometimes he would let me ride along and go cruising and scooping the loop in a small town near me. I remember him teaching me a bit on how to work on them and cleaning them before going cruising.

I’ve never been a one type of car person. I just like any that catch my eye. The shape, the color, the sounds. One day my 1994 Mustang GT Convertible with the 5.0 HO came into the family. It got passed around a bit then the option came up for me to trade my 2013 Toyota Tacoma for her and I’ve been in love with her since.

GINGER’S DREAM–1964 1/2 CONVERTIBLE

THIS CLASSIC CAR HAS BEEN A JOY ADDED TO MY LIFE.

This is my 1964 1/2 and it is mostly stock. It has an added fuel injector, power steering, seat belts, and the pipes have been changed.

My very first car was a 1976 Mustang II. I had always loved Mustangs. I grew up in a Ford family. I had an older cousin that restored Mustangs from the 60s. Although I bought a 2009 GT Convertible, I had always wanted a red, 1965 convertible. I looked for

years. After my mother passed away, I had the money from her life insurance so I decided to make my dream come true. I stepped up my game looking for my dream car. I asked many of my Mustang friends to be on the lookout.

A good friend of mine was passing by a house in our town and saw a red convertible in the garage. He stopped and asked if it was for sale. The man said he would sell it. It turned out to be a 1964 1/2. My friend took multiple pictures of it including crawling underneath and taking pictures. He sent those to me then Face Time me. I went the next day, looked at it and drove it. It had already had a rotisserie restoration. The only thing that wasn’t what I was looking for is it’s an automatic. I have two manual Mustangs so I can live with an automatic. I bought it immediately. I named it after my mother. I did research on older Mustangs including talking to friends who own them. I love driving it including occasionally driving it to work. I’ve done parades. I love doing car shows. I had already been showing one of my other Mustangs. I always have compliments on her at shows. I’ve had many offers to buy her but I always say no. This classic car has been a joy added to my life.

I WAS JUST A KID IN THE 90S AND DON’T REMEMBER EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED THEN, BUT ONE

THING

I WILL NEVER FORGET WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD SEEN A “NEW EDGE” MUSTANG AND INSTANTLY FELL IN LOVE.

My passion for Mustangs came at a very early age, passed down from my grandpa.

I was just a kid in the 90s and don’t remember everything that happened then, but one thing I will never forget was the first time I had seen a “New Edge” Mustang and instantly fell in love. Right then and there, I told myself I had to have one. Fast forward

almost 25 years and I made the dream a reality after purchasing my ‘99 GT, which I named “Red” based off Blake Shelton’s hit “Ol’ Red.”

But that wasn’t enough. The flame I had for Mustangs before, turned into a blaze I never want to put out. So I put my head down, did my homework, and finally brought home Morticia. She is a 2016 GT that is all

GT stock, aside from an upgraded exhaust. The Competition Orange color grabbed my attention immediately, as it stands out in a crowd. The performance the 5.0 put out was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, so it was only fitting to personalize the plates to match the power.

I named it Morticia after Morticia Addams, because the pure beauty pairs well with the hellacious power. I am now the proud owner of three Mustangs, with no plans of stopping my collection for as long as I live!

Next purchase will be either a GT500 or a Mach so stay tuned!

This Mustang’s journey began as a daily driver in 2014. This idea was to stay reliable and stock… that didn’t last long. One night on the way home from a movie a C5 twin turbo Corvette absolutely blew our doors off and the fire was ignited. The call was made to ROUSH Performance and we added their supercharger kit, followed by porting and adding e85, and we landed in the 850 rwhp range. After the deaths of my mom and grandmother the Mustang became my way to fight back out of this dark time. My love for drifting since 2008 fueled the direction and we began the road of learning to drift

SONNY J.–1977 TRANS AM

I WAS STATIONED IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, THE WEATHER WAS GREAT, AND I WAS READY TO RACE!

In 1977, after graduating Rockdale County High School, (Conyers, Georgia), I enlisted in the United States Navy.

I bought myself a brand new car. I bought a black Firebird Trans Am on November 17, 1977. This year makes 45 years since I have owned this car!

The car and I have seen many changes through the years, it has been through many cities and states. In the Navy,

I was sent to Orlando, Florida for boot camp. I traveled back and forth back to Georgia many times through the years. The car safely brought my two baby girls (Misty and Brooke) home from the hospital when they each

were born. My grandchildren have all ridden in the car and a few of them have been privileged enough to drive it!

In 1985, I decided to change the car’s purpose, and now could afford more than one vehicle, it was time to have some fun! I was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, the weather was great, and I was ready to race! I tubbed it out and backhalted it, making it a pro-street. I did some street racing.

Six Pontiac engines later, it was time for some upgrades!

It was hard to find parts for the old Pontiacs, in 1991 and 1992. So, the decision was made to go up to a new motor, a 502 Big Block Chevy, and while I was at it, I installed a 200 shot fogger system. Basically, renovated everything under the hood. The car was repainted as

well. I decided to give ORSCA my best shot. I went into the 5.30 and 6.00 class.

In 1994 -1995, I enrolled into UTI and went to Chicago to study and race. I ran the car in Great Lakes, Byron Dragway for a year. While in school, I had access to the Dyno and tried to mechanically get the car the best I could make it.

When I graduated from UTI, I moved back to Georgia. I continued to work on the car and installed the current motor, which is a 540 Big Block Chevy with a three stage nitrous kit. I raced every chance I got and made alot of connections. I raced in ORSCA, street raced, and had a lot of fun. I have had an amazing time, out on the road racing, made a ton of friends, and had a pretty cool job. I found Leo Neal on Facebook when I was headed to Valdosta, Georgia to race. Leo and I became friends, chatted on Facebook often, and he has been so good

to me in the meantime. I felt honored when Leo asked if I would come on to the Nitrous Race Connections team and be sponsored.

I retired from the Navy in 1999, worked at Single Source Paints for many years, and retired from Summit Racing in October of 2021.

Since then, I have relocated to Seneca, South Carolina. I spent my winter prepping my new garage, cleaning the car, and installing a new fuel system. I have spent the spring and summer going to local tracks, and had some fun in Mooresville and Fayetteville, NC. Had a blast at the events with the Street Outlaws with JJ and his team.

I always promote Nitrous Race Connections at every event and continue to live every day like it is my last.

Let’s go have some fun, Leo!

JUST LEAN INTO IT A LITTLE MORE.

In the past few episodes of Just The Tip, we’ve been looking at the effect of lowering your Pony and the potential effects of handling, and required adjustments to the suspension. The information mostly pertained to general concepts of lowering a vehicle with focus on the rear of the car. In the next two episodes, lets get into the fun stuff – the front suspension. The stuff that makes your car turn and does the heavy lifting of your suspension/steering system. When the body of the car is lowered onto the suspension, it changes the geometry of the front end suspension due to a reduced length of spring or strut that connects the upper part

“JUST THE TIP

of the car to the lower (suspension) part of the car. This affects Caster, Camber and Tow. All three of these components being in proper alignment is crucial to the handling and performance of your vehicle. When your Camber is out, it’s going to wear the tires unevenly on the inside/outside and not make optimal contact with the asphalt. When your Tow is out, you’ll have one side of the car trying to steer the car left, while the other side is trying to steer it right while you’re holding the steering wheel dead center. When you Caster is out, each bump you hit or corner you take is not pushing the strut up directly under the car, but rather pushing forward or backwards, affecting your stability at high speeds and straight-line tracking. Once you make the leap to lower your ride, make sure you get a full four wheel alignment to insure that all of you critical steering components are aligned to give you optimal performance and longevity.
