Get Plugged Into Lochwood

by SCOTT ROBSON

A Message from the President

DEAR LOCHWOOD NEIGHBORS,

I hope this annual newsletter finds you well! For some of us it’s been a year of new birth, for others loss, for some a tremendous challenge, for others success. Which is why I am more grateful than ever to be living in Lochwood because of the many events & activities that have emerged (from the creative, caring minds and efforts of others) resulting in a myriad of ways for us all to enjoy real community! My hope for each of us this year is that we will find a neighbor, a gathering, or a group to invest our time into, putting some new roots down that will no doubt bear fruit. Here are a few that come to mind, SNAP – Service Neighborhood Assistance Program. If you or one of your elderly or disabled neighbors are ever in need of a ride for an errand of any type (doctor appointment, grocery store, pharmacy, etc.) we have more than 20 neighbors who would be delighted to give you/them a lift. As most of you know, one such neighbor celebrated her 100th birthday last year with nearly 100 of us surprising her by singing happy birthday on her front lawn… complete with cupcakes and local TV news coverage. Maybe you prefer to have some wind in your face and bugs in your teeth? Just the right thing sprung up for you last year: The Lochwood Social Bicycle Club! – Trips depart from Lochwood Park and tool around White Rock Lake or downtown to the Farmer’s Market for brunch and back. Want to grab a bite in a public setting and meet neighbors? Neighborhood Socials at Goodfriend Burger House & Beer Garden have been just the place for young and old, for those who imbibe and for those who don’t. Or perhaps you’d prefer a home setting; we’ll continue to have get-togethers for men (Lochwood Men’s Night), and get-togethers for women (Lochwood Girl’s Night) as neighbors open their homes to get to know one another over food and drinks. A few more of you are the outdoors type and had a blast being led on a Lochwood Guided Nature Walk of our unique creeks, waterfalls, and wooded areas by a neighbor whose spent a large part of his life investigating, exploring, photographing, and chronicling the wildlife and land of Lochwood. You may be the thoughtful bookworm-type who would like to help start another Lochwood Book Club. There’s one now that regularly meets in the comfortable, living-roomlike environment of Lucky Dog Bookstore on Garland Road (which has a treasure trove of great used books!). Many of us shared great memories from Movies in the Park, our second Lochwood sponsored East Dallas Blood Donor Drive, another great 4th of July Picnic and Parade, our first Back 2 School Pizza Party with Lochwooders who reside in Estancia Apartments, and some great Halloween night Parties, just to mention a few. I’ve even heard that someone’s working to launch our first Run Lochwood! Fun Run & Walk. Sign up now at our Lochwood.com website and stay tuned for what awaits you in 2016…it’s time to Get Plugged In. L N A BOA R D M EM BER S A N D N EI G H BOR H OOD L EA D ER S

Let’s Rally Around Reilly

by ANDREA PERKINS

• Did you know that Reilly is a DISD School of Choice with a Dual-Language Spanish/ English Immersion Program? • Reilly builds strong learners! Our school exhibits robust test scores & TEA ratings, high teacher morale, and good student/ teacher ratios - attributable predominantly to the dynamic leadership of Principal Marion Jackson, teachers who work tirelessly on behalf of our kids, and a dedicated support staff. • The successful fundraising efforts of our hard-working PTA has resulted in the creation of both a Drama Club and a Garden Club (free to students). Additionally, the PTA has provided funds to cover many requested supplies and materials for the school.

You can be a reading mentor, room parent, help with campus beautification, etc. Simply register to be a volunteer on the DISD website and then contact the school to see how you can help. Lastly, you can participate in our many fundraisers throughout the year (also posted regularly on Lochwood’s Facebook page). LET’S RALLY AROUND REILLY!!!

Beautification Lifts Lochwood Spirits HOW DO YOU MAKE A NATURAL BEAUTY MORE BEAUTIFUL? That is the question I asked myself when I thought about taking over the Lochwood Monument garden at Lochwood and Lippitt. I think our neighborhood is amazing and beautiful. Our greenbelt, our creek system, the animals and birds that live in it, all enhance the natural beauty of our community. One way to enhance a neighborhood is with flower beds and gardens. I have been gardening with my father since I was a child. I feel that it shows pride in your land, in your home and in your neighborhood. I want the community to know we love and care about where we live. We had a great turnout with neighborhood helpers last May and planted the first round of updates to the flower bed. I envision another layer and more plants for this Spring. Research shows that beauty is one of the top three factors in creating community attachment and loyalty. Some research even indicates that an attractive neighborhood may lead to better behavior. I agree. It was an amazing day this Winter when John Rodriguez and I updated the bed with the pansies that are currently blooming. So many people waved and honked at us as we worked to make our community even more beautiful and special. I know it lifted my spirit and I think it made them feel good too.

You Down with LPG?

by MEGAN LUCKIE

Are you a part of the Lochwood Parents Group (LPG) yet? Our group was founded to bring neighborhood parents together to support one another, share information and have fun together. We have meetings every other month and a variety of neighborhood events scheduled throughout the year. Mom’s Nights Out and bimonthly meetings are primarily attended by LPG moms, but there are many family events as well including our annual Back-to-School and Christmas parties; Dad’s Nights Out, “Shots and Tots” Family Potlucks; and neighborhood favorites such as the annual Fourth of July parade/party, Easter Party and the Halloween party where families gather and all go trick-or-treating together. In addition to scheduled family and parents’ events, the LPG provides meals to families with a new baby, sets up It’s all business at this 2015 gathering. play dates around Dallas and schedules meet-ups for families at Lochwood Park. The LPG also has its own group on meetup.com and Facebook where members can solicit service referrals from each other, notify other members about events and activities, and share parenting news, ideas, questions, and concerns. Through LPG, we see our kids building friendships with one another and parents being given a community to share the joys and challenges of parenting. We hope you will join us and be a part of making Lochwood one of the best places to raise a family in Dallas. So Many Great Facebook Posts in 2015, But This One is Hard to Beat.

Just wanted to say I love this neighborhood! We have lived here only 4 months and had neighbors repair our lawnmower, bring us cookies, bring us welcome gifts, put together our daughters kitchen set, invite us to play dates, babysat, and just been generally so nice and friendly. Happy Hundy Mattie!

by SCOTT PARADISE

ON OCTOBER 30, 2015 WE GATHERED AS A NEIGHBORHOOD to celebrate a huge

milestone for one of our finest. Mattie turned 100 years old and was surprised to find 100 neighbors singing her ‘Happy Birthday’. Many neighbors brought cupcakes, signs, cards and balloons. I was blown away by the outpouring of love and kindness, even in the pouring rain! Mattie was a bit of a local celebrity in the days following, and she and her family could not have more more thankful. It was a day I will never forget and a Scott, Mattie, Brenda and Scott Robson; day that defined the Lochwood Spirit! Neighbors greeted Mattie with signs while singing happy birthday. Thanks again to all who participated!

Neighbor Q&A

by THOMAS BUCK

30 MINUTES WITH… DANIEL JACOB.

Marketing Executive. Massage Therapist. AirBNB-er. Mavs ManiAAC. A Neighbor as Unique as Lochwood. This is a small “blurb” of the interview. The entire interview, with full answers, can be seen on Lochwood.com. Q: Alright, how long have you lived in Lochwood? A: I bought my house in 1999. Memorial Day of ’99. Q: What do you do for work? A: Multiple things, but during the day, I work for Rokkit Marketing. We build websites for small businesses, and then help market those sites and their services via digital email marketing, social media. And then, I’ve been a massage therapist since 2004. I moonlight out of Lake Highlands Acupuncture @ NW Hwy/Ferndale. I rent out a room in my house through AirBNB. And, of course, I dance at Dallas Mavericks games since 2002, as a founding member of the Mavs ManiACCS. Q: What made you decide to become a Mavs ManiACC? A: The Dallas Mavericks had an ad in the paper that said “We’re looking for clydesdales, not chippendales”, which is the best tagline ever. I wasn’t comfortable in my dancing ability, but I was comfortable being a “big fan”. And, they were offering free playoff tickets. So, they had auditions, had you send in a full length photo, b/c they didn’t want professional dancers. They wanted Mavs fans first, entertainers second. I was chosen as one of the 80. Then from the auditions, they choose 13 of us. We rehearsed for 2 weeks, and there was supposed to be one performance during a playoff game in 2002. It was supposed to be just

one game, and now it’s 14 years later. We do every home game. 41 home games, every home playoff game, as well as watch parties, weddings, corporate events (over 100 events outside of the AAC) per year. And, we were just blessed to be asked to our third Allstar game. We went to Denver in 2005, to AT&T Stadium in 2010, and now we’re going to Toronto this year. Q: You are a Lochwood VIP, one of the few that patrols at night. A: It’s been great. I look forward to it. Mike Mason and I have been patrolling together for 3 years. We can always use more people on the patrols. To just spend 2 hours a month, it’s a pretty easy commitment. We’ve gotten to meet our neighbors, and stay more connected with the neighborhood. There have been a lot more fences installed and a lot more lights turned on at night I’ve noticed in the last 2 months, which is great. It’s amazing how deep the shadows are when it’s dark at night. I know we have a neighbor, Kathy (Hatcher) who has been promoting turning on our lights at night, and we’ve both commented on how many lights have been on lately. Please see the full interview on Lochwood.com

Thirst Quencher

by NATE & WHITNEY DeMERCURIO

AS THE TEMPERATURES BEGAN TO RISE in April of 2015, we wanted to see if there were options for

installing a water fountain at Lochwood Park. We worked with Thomas Buck and Scott Robson to connect us with the right people at the City of Dallas and the Parks Department.

It was a fairly lengthy process back and forth, but the City was very helpful and, in fact, planned to

install the fountain at no cost to our Neighborhood Association! They installed the fountain near the playground area, which includes a pet fountain for everyone’s furry, Our new people and pet drinking fountain, located near the Lochwood Park playground.

Light Up Lochwood

by KATHY HATCHER

FIGHTING CRIME HAS BEEN and probably always will be a part of any neighborhood association, and ours is no exception. Many of us at some point have fallen victim to petty theft from our cars, porches, sheds and even our homes…we need to make greater efforts to watch out for one another. But... in order to “watch” out for each other, we need to be able to see! There are several stretches along our greenbelts that are not lit at all and many for long stretches of blocks. I’ve noticed this for years when driving my own route at night heading home on Creekmere from Easton but believe we can help fight crime by better lighting up our neighborhood at night. If you are a member of our Facebook page, the “Lochwood Meadows Neighborhood & Dixon Branch Homeowner’s Association”, then you have probably seen my weekly posts since October to LightUp!Lochwood. This is just a beginning, but the idea (and reminder on the Facebook page) is for each of us to remember that we can help deter crime to some extent simply by making sure that our front and back porch lights, flood and security lights (if you have them) are turned on every night at dusk. If you are not on the Facebook page, I urge you to join now. There is a wealth of information and help posted regularly by members all acting as good neighbors! I will continue to post my reminders as well. The next step in the campaign to LightUp!Lochwood involves our city councilman, Mark Clayton who has agreed to help us fight for a few needed street lamps to cover the dark areas that are in such need to keep us safe. If you know of an area in our neighborhood that you feel is a potentially dangerous area at night due to lack of light, please feel free to email me at kathy@hatcherdesigngroup.com, and I will make sure it is looked at for a potential street lamp installment. In the meantime, get on our Facebook page, watch out for your neighbors, always report any strange or unusual activity to the police, stay vigilant and safe and remember to turn those front and back porch lights on EVERY night to LightUp!Lochwood. Look for the hash-tag, #LightUp!Lochwood.

The Nature of Lochwood

by RICH MILNE

MY WIFE AND I CHOSE LOCHWOOD because of the trees. Maybe you did that too. But did you realize what a healthy choice you made? The January issue of National Geographic reported research that “found that people living near more green space reported less mental distress... [and] Dutch researches found a lower incidence of 15 diseases... in people living within about a half mile of green space.” (p.57) But if you have lived here long, you knew that, right? The Lochwood neighborhood is blessed with more parks and green space than almost any other area in the city. It’s hard to get more than a block or two from green space in Lochwood. A beautiful creation surrounds us. What are we doing to take care of that treasure? Just getting out in it yourself will encourage you to tell others about it. You could pick up trash as you walk. Encourage your family to treat our parks and trees well. Lochwood Park is one of the most unlikely, surprising, left-to-be-wild parks in Dallas. It can be a place of refreshing, adventure, discovery and delight. Help take care of our parks and trees. They are helping you. Rich Milne started and updates www.lochwoodpark.com
