A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

GIVE WHERE YOU LIVE

by SCOTT ROBSON

IN THE 20 YEARS THAT MY WIFE AND I HAVE LIVED IN LOCHWOOD we have

seen this simple motto prove to be true time and again: “If we ALL do a little, it will make a great BIG diference…”

Scott and Brenda being BIG at The Lochwood Library for the LNA Blood Drive; Their “tagged” fence.

However, before something good happens it seems that often something bad has to precede it. That’s our story anyway. Our “welcome” to Lochwood in ‘95 was to have our just-built fence plastered with graffiti to which my wife Brenda exclaimed to the ladies of the Lochwood Parents Group, “What kind of neighborhood have we moved into?!” The reply she got from a wise sage was quite simply (and truthfully), “Well, there’s crime & vandalism everywhere, you can choose to either be part of the solution or do nothing about it except complain.” That one comment set in motion a series of changes in the way we thought and the way we have lived since; Brenda soon got our area of the neighborhood re-activated in crime watch activities, we both joined Volunteers In Patrol (VIP), and we have since continued (to some degree or other) to do our “little” in what we believe has contributed to making, “a great BIG difference.” Ours is but one small water drop of a story. What’s yours?

2014 WAS AN EXCITING YEAR FOR LOCHWOOD

and I’m looking forward to 2015! We kicked off the Spring with a successful branding campaign via the launch of Lochwood Neighborhood Goods and sold hundreds of neighborhood themed t-shirts, hats, mugs, tumblers, and koozies. Our Fall/Winter sale was not nearly as successful as the Spring/Summer launch, so we may merge the two into one larger offering sometime in the The “Earlywood” Camp Fire future, perhaps the Fall of 2015. My main focus in 2015 will be to improve Mug was a huge hit. organization, communication, and social events in Lochwood. We are planning more social events to bring neighbors together and are in the process of redesigning the website to a more content-friendly format. We are also working on a periodic crime report that will incorporate tips from our ENP officers and other law enforcement sources to help protect you and your property.

LOCHWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD

FROM SEATTLE TO LOCHWOOD

by JEREMY PACE

MY FAMILY (WIFE AND THREE YEAR

moved into Lochwood last April. We had spent some time in the Northwest and lived in a neighborhood that had identity, character, and desire to be a community of people who shared life together. Our hope was to find This is Lochwood: The Pace family. a similar neighborhood in east Dallas; though Dallas is admittedly more known for its shopping and sports than neighborhood life! Yet, what we have experienced in our short time in Lochwood is a distinct group of people who seek to connect together both for the betterment and enjoyment of our individual lives as well as the community and city in which we live. “Lochwooders” really enjoying being together and doing together! I experienced the depth and history of this togetherness one Saturday morning this past October at Lochwood Park. The Lochwood Parents Group had put together a “Dads & Donuts” OLD TWINS)

morning. A couple dozen dads and kids met that morning to enjoy gorging out on sprinkled treats and Cultivar Cofee. As the kids ran off their sugar on the playground, the dads shared about their varied history in the neighborhood. Some had been here for over 10 years, others just for a few days. What struck me was that all had the same hope for the neighborhood, to raise their families in a place and with a people who enjoyed being together and doing together. Dads & Donuts provided me with a great way to get to hear and see the identity and character of Lochwood. We’ll certainly have more Dad’s & Donuts as the weather warms up and as one of the various ways our neighborhood shares life. We’re grateful to have found Lochwood and look forward to sharing our lives as Lochwooders with you for years to come!

OUR OFF-DUTY POLICE OFFICERS OFFER THESE CRIME PREVENTION TIPS FOR WHEN YOU ARE OUT OF TOWN

+ Keep your house well lit at nighttime. + Have an emergency contact in the neighborhood who can check on your house. + Activate your house alarm. + Ask someone to pick up your mail and any packages/magazines, etc. from the

front door to make it look like you are home… DO NOT let packages or mail ACCUMULATE as this will signal an empty house. + Leave music or a TV on while out of town. + Call the ENP phone and ask to have your home added to the Out of Town Home Check List - 214.478.3678. Our goal as neighbors is to encourage the educational pursuits of high school students living in our community & to build bridges with apartment residents. All too often we make a distinction between homeowners & apartment dwellers. It is our desire to soften those lines and to build relationships in an effort to strengthen ties, support a safe neighborhood, reduce crime, & encourage upward socioeconomic mobility through education.

It is our goal to award as many $250 scholarships as possible, to be used for eligible school expenses. 100% of the funds raised will be for this purpose.
