Tony Luciani's work can be defined as interpretive realism. Rather than paint a photorealistic likeness, Luciani paints the feeling he gets from a mental visualization of an object. Mood and emotion are more important than the actual subject matter. Luciani often uses multiples as subjects; piles of tires, stacks of chairs, or figures grouped in a singular hug. All preparatory drawings are done on location, then worked to a larger scale in the studio, where details are eliminated or elaborated in order to convey the artist's intent.

Tony Luciani was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1956. He received his BFA from the Ontario College of Art in 1978 and continued his studies in Florence, Italy. There, the artist attained his post-graduate degree in art. Luciani was awarded the George A. Reid Scholarship and was a three-time Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant recipient. He began painting full time upon graduation and has exhibited consistently since 1978.
