LES THOMAS
Les Thomas was born in British Colombia, and has spent the majority of his life in Western Canada. He studied painting, sculpture and printmaking at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and received his BFA in 1990. Concentrating on painting, he spent a year enrolled in the MFA program at the Slade School of Fine art, University College London, England, and in 1998 completed his MFA degree at the University of Calgary.
Thomas’s paintings are readily recognizable, most often depicting a single animal form centrally located on a square format. Over time Thomas’s interests have grown to include many concepts of contemporary painting. Central to his artistic aspirations are that his paintings be inimitable, and appreciated as something uniquely Canadian. Currently his artwork might best be described as a hybrid of Realism and Pop art. Works by Les Thomas are held in many public, corporate and private collections in Canada, the USA, and abroad.
