JACqUES PAYETTE

Jacques Payette paints the world around him with a gentle vision that has evolved into a deeply personal and identifiable style. Payette uses the ancient encaustic medium to paint portraits of his family members, landscapes, and still life objects. Encaustic painting is the application of hot beeswax mixed with coloured pigments to a surface, resulting in subjects formed in rich layers of transparent colour. The mood in his compositions is quiet and dreamy and often involves vintage fabrics and materials.

Jacques Payette was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1951. Payette is a self-taught artist; he began exhibiting in Montreal in the early 1970s and throughout Canada in subsequent years.
