MICHAEL FORSTER

Michael Forster arrived in Canada from England in 1928 upon completion of his studies at the London Central School of Arts and Crafts and classes at the Academie Colarossi, in Paris. For more than 60 years, he played a prominent role in Canadian art exhibiting with major art societies initially as an early surrealist in the 1930s, a Canadian War artist in the 1940s and subsequently as an abstract painter. Forster lived through a century full of discovery and adventure that concluded with man's exploration of outer space. As an artist, he took inspiration from the glowing patterns and chromatic depths of space, composing varied and rich abstract compositions influenced by the flux and fusion of the galaxies.

In 1960, Forster was honoured with a solo exhibition of 80 works by Mexico's Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno as well as major retrospectives in Luxembourg and Canada. Forster's paintings have been exhibited in major museums including the National Gallery, Washington, Musee d'art Moderne, Paris, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the British Museum, the Sao Paulo Museum, Brazil and the National Gallery of Canada.
