IvAN EYRE

Ivan Eyre is a premier Canadian painter and sculptor who has established his own iconographic language that continues to evolve and incorporate silhouettes, portraits and landscapes based on a subjective interpretation. His ability to combine these various themes into works of authority and visual appeal has made Eyre one of Canada's most respected and celebrated artists.

Ivan Eyre was born in Tullymet, Saskatchewan in 1935. Graduating in 1957 from the University of Manitoba, Eyre would later return as a Professor of Painting and Drawing where he taught until his retirement in 1993. Eyre trained under Eli Bornstein and Ernest Lindner and has himself instructed many leading artists of today. In 1998 the Pavilion Museum was opened at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg with the entire third floor dedicated as the Ivan Eyre Gallery. In 2010 the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario opened a sculpture garden of nine monumental Ivan Eyre bronze sculptures. In 2008 the University of Manitoba awarded Eyre an honorary degree in appreciation of his contribution to Canadian art and in 2015 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.
